I'd love to think that my humble Yelp review had an impact on this, but regardless of the catalyst Don Churro now has a lunch menu! $7.95 can get you a lunch sized entree of many of their items, or a combo from your pick of two items from a list including soups, salads, empanadas, and sandwiches. A lunch menu means that I can now dub Don Churro as truly awesome. I must first start off this entry by confessing that I did not have any of the entrees at Don Churro cafe. Then what the freak am I doing writing this review? Well my eager little friends, I did sample the dessert that makes up this joint's name; churros. So what qualifies me to write a review soley based on my sampling of Don Churro Cafe's churros? Well if my fat jiggly stomach isn't my best qualification, then allow me to take you down memory lane and tell you about Fat Daddy's lifelong experience and appreciation for churros. Churros are very near and dear to my heart as I grew up eating them at what's new the Churreria Madrid in Adams Morgan. I can remember those cold days when my Mom would surprise me with a trip to the Churreria where she's order a large cup of hot chocolate and a plate of freshly fried Churros. I can still remember the smell and taste of those churros and the sight of granulated sugar falling all over the table and my pants. For many years, this was my only exposure to churros until I took my first trip to Spain. By the time I visited Spain for the first time, I was a young stupid (and still fat) adult exploring the many shops and restaurants of Madrid. On my first night in this Spanish capital, I found a small little Churreria that served freshly fried churros and molten melted dipping chocolate. The taste of these churros far exceeded the Adams Morgan churreria and instantly made me appreciate the importance of having a treat in the originating country. That experience and others forced me to change my plans of staying in Spain for only a few days to exploring the country for over two week. I tasted churros in Barcelona, San Sebastian and found my favorite churreria in Seville that was run by a fiesty little old lady...whom I made sure to visit on future visits to Seville. All my lifelong experiences with churros have ingrained a sort of criteria for what makes a churro a churro. I know I can't do it justice by making a list, but here's my best approximation of what makes a great churro: - Temperature: The churro must be piping hot, just out of the fryer. - Dough: D'oh! The dough must be light and not too dense. - Flavor: Not too much sugar sprinkled on, but enough to compliment the subtle flavor of the fried dough. - Chocolate: Molten dark chocolate dipping sauce made of fine chocolate. If that's not available, a good cup of REAL hot chocolate (not that powdered chocolate mix nonsense). Now using the above criteria, how did Don Churro fare? Not too good. The dough was very heavy and unusually dense, the flavor of the dough was not too churro-like and tasted like a heavy fried pancake while the temperature was almost room temperature. The dipping sauce given to my wife was some "squeeze out of a tube" chocolate coiled up in a small plastic dish while my hot chocolate was okay and definitely not from a mix. I was very very disappointed in the flavor of the churro and found the only saving grace of this experience was the hot chocolate and the excellent service (the host and waitress were very very nice and courteous). The friendly service along with the full restaurant (and tasty looking dishes) may entice me to return. I'd love to try out their version of my favorite Bolivian dish called Silpancho as well as some other tasty Latin American entrees...but I'll definitely refrain from getting the churros. read more

I came here a while ago due to the amazing reviews on Yelp, and in all honestly, I will not return... This will be a short review: The place was clean, lit up nicely, and quite comfortable to be in. The staff is where the first problem came about. Somewhat friendly, but very slow at helping us out, taking orders, bringing orders, answering questions, and just an overall "ehhh I'll get to it vibe". Considering that there were maybe 5-6 other guests there, I'm surprised the service was so slow and lackluster. The food itself was better than fast food... I ate Peruvian based dishes since I had some on a trip to Peru and my Peruvian friends cook quite well. I was not impressed one bit. Everything tasted processed and almost like whoever was in the kitchen thought "aww fuck it, this will do"... We should have known the dessert was also going to suck. My ice cream had chunks of ice in it, and a texture that suggested it had been in the freezer for some time. When we got the check I nearly fainted. Everything was way overpriced for what we got... Overall I'm going to give them one star. There was just nothing impressive other than cleanliness, and the bang-for-buck ratio was not good at all. read more

There were too many different dishes from different latin american countries that perhaps they didn't do one thing exceptionally well. Their empanadas were passable. The food is great as usual under the new owner, but the portions are disappointing and we were overcharged compared to menu price. I ordered the Ceviche Classico, and it was about half the food as it used to be. The yuca fries are much better than they were previously, but are no longer served with the delicious cream sauce, which is a major disappointment. The new decor is very nice, but if the portions remain so small this restaurant will no longer be as great a value as it used to be, and I will have to seek out another spot for lunch. read more

This aint your normal chips and salsa tex mex jamboree. No, this is authentic south american cuisine in Centreville. I started off with the appetizer empanadas which were absolutely delectable. I then ordered the pollo saltado. A peruivan dish that consists of a generous portion of flavorful sauteed chicken strips accompanied with onions, tomatoes, potatoes, and a scoop or two of rice. All the food here is delicious. It is a bit pricey, but with all the south american phony eateries, this is a sure winner! The dishes on the menu have a flag right by them indicating the origin of a particular dish. My husband and I headed to Don Churro Cafe after our plumber recommended the joint. My husband is of Colombian descent and we had been looking high + low for a place that served Colombian food. So, off we went! We arrived on a Saturday around early dinner time - 4:30 ish and the place was packed. Kids, adults, grandparents, people on dates. You name it. It took a little while for us to be recognized (the proverbial head nod) but once we were greeted, we were told to sit down as it would be 10-15 mins before we were seated. I am an avid people watcher (it's a sport in my eyes). So, I noticed off the bat that a few patrons had less than happy looks on their faces. It was a combination of hunger, annoyance, and "I'm about to walk outta here and go to Mikey Dees". When we were finally seated, our served quickly ran through the menu and told us that it would be awhile b/c the kitchen was backed up. Fair enough, we were warned - at least he was honest. Another waitress came by to take our drink & app orders and we went with arepas de queso and natural fruit juices (I got the maracuya and my hubby got the mango). The arepas were warm, crunchy on the outside and had a nice cheesy filling oozing out - they were delish. The fruit uses to make the juices tasted as though it had been frozen and defrosted but it was still pretty tasty. My husband and I decided to share the bandeja paisa because we knew it would be enough to feed a family of 4 on the last day of a family vacay aka when you run outta money. It was more than plenty. The meat was cooked well and it was still juicy. The porkbelly was fattening, crunchy, and generated much guilt from my waistline later on - hence, it hit the spot. The avocado was not ripe enough and unfortunately I had to put it to the side =/ The rice & beans were, well, rice and beans. Overall, the bandeja was well executed and a bang for your buck. What happened to the sour looking patrons, you say? Well, unfortunately, one of the couples that was sitting next to us got their food AFTER we had finished eating. Not sure how that happened as they had placed their order almost 45 minutes earlier. Which brings me to another point. How did I know they had ordered 45 minutes earlier? Well, at Don Churro Cafe, you sit pretty close to your neighbors - a la Parisian cafe style. And believe me, I got an earful from the woman next to me about her hunger. So, I was not eavesdropping. But man, we are talking 15 minute for drinks for a place that was not even a close to half packed on a Sunday at 5:30 pm? Now, besides that, just about everything was delicious. I got the Encacado Shrimp (in coconut broth), we got the papa relleno, papa huicaina, my friend got the pork dish with mote, his wife could not stop raving about the potato soup with queso fresca. *3.5 stars* I very much wanted to love this place: it came highly recommended, it has all sorts of fantastic sounding South American food, the service was quick and friendly, but our pollo and lomo saltado just weren't that great. Yes, I'm a bit picky - I've been to Peru, plus I have a Peruvian friend here in DC with whom I've made the rounds to at least 5 different restaurants to try out their ceviches and saltados. And Don Churros saltado didn't quite live up to my expectations -- it wasn't saucy enough, the meat and fries were not mixed up, and the beef just didn't taste that good (although the chicken was just fine). However, the saltenas (sp?) we had as an appetizer were mighty tasty. However, if I were out in this area again, I'd definitely give them another try, as their menu had many-a-thing from which to choose...the tapas section in particular sounded pretty damn good. read more

The best Peruvian restaurants in the DC area. My Peruvian wife and kids are and very selective and this is their new go-to restaurant when they are craving flavors from home. I really enjoyed the causa, ceviche, Aji de gallina and seco that our table shared. Pan de Chicharron was humongous and a very good deal! The owner stopped by and was very welcoming. I will start by saying that the owner/manager is extremely friendly & he genuinely seemed interested in getting to know the customers. We arrived on a Saturday evening & the dining area was half full. Our server was friendly enough. We ordered the: empanadas - they were decent but I'll never crave them again. peruvian chicken - the portion I received was dry & it really had no flavor. Flavoring was good (not great, awesome, or really good). The meat could've been better. I was chewing so much, I ended up not eating the rice or much of the fries that came with it. The entree was sauteed with red onion, green onions, and tomatoes. Those were delicous. Friend ordred Arroz con Pollo. He loves arroz con pollo but is very used to it being cooked with beer which gives it a very strong and pungent taste which he loves. There arroz is suttle but very flavorful. Empanadas *chicken and chilena was yummy. To me, the dough is what makes the empanada good. Thumbs up here. Must try if you come here. It is also served with a green sauce (seems like avocado, cilantro, maybe horeseradish/ginger or some sort of root that gives off a very gentle heat, really good!). Churro! I was a regular to this site since one month ago. I love its chicken soup. I had been inviting several friends for dinner and coworkers for lunch. I always ask for a chicken soup with some arepas " a kind of Venezuelan bread" as a side however, yesterday Thursday September 18, I went with my wife for dinner and I requested as usual: chicken soup and arepas then, I was surprised because the waiter told me that they cannot give me the arepas as I was requesting??? The waiter mentioned that she was told by the manager that yes, I can have the arepas but that I have to buy a full dish with arepas. I was in schock how can be possible that I need to buy a full dish when I just want a couple of arepas. It is like you ask for a piece of bread as a side and the restaurant refuse to provide the bread and tell you that you need to buy a dish with three sandwiches. If you advertise Latin-American food at least you need to know that Venezuela people eat arepas with everything so, learn first before you try to make a business. I know that each restaurant has their policies but if they are not realized yet, that in doing this kind of things they will lost clients unfortunately for them. I will not return any more to this restaurant and will pass the voice to all my friends. Sadly, I had found this kind of abuse many times in different latino restaurants around this area unfortunately for then you can find chicken soup anywhere but clients are hard to keep. Don Churro was on my list of places to try after a friend had recommended it to us, and it just so happened Specialicious issued out a coupon ($15 for $30 worth of food) so it couldn't have been more perfect timing. We strolled in for dinner on a Friday night (same night as the Peru vs. Paraguay FIFA quals game) which brought in all the Peru soccer fans out and contributed to a lively, fun atmosphere. Don Churro's has a huge projector screen and two TV's by the bar which are perfect for game nights. We were able to grab a couple seats by the bar area and enjoyed a fantastic meal just in time for the game. We started off with a couple drinks and appetizers: Drinks: Argentinian light beer - Quilmes. Ceviche Mixto (Peruvian) - This is a must-order and probably one of the best ceviches I've ever had. This ceviche contained white fish, shrimp, baby octopus, mussels and squid which is packed with SO much citrus flavor and the special house sauce on the side gives the ceviche even more of a kick. It is a huge mound of glorious seafood served alongside HUGE (i mean like corn on steroids huge) maize corn kernels cooked two-ways -- steamed and/or boiled and dried (hominy) and a few pieces of sweet potato. Huge portion and worth every bite. $15. Papa Rellena (Peruvian) - This dish is basically mashed potatoes stuffed with seasoned ground beef and spices in a pastry-like shell. If you don't know by now, I'm a meat and potatoes kinda girl, so this dish is right up my alley. $7. Now onto the entrees... We ordered the Lomo Saltado and the Bandeja Paisa: The Lomo Saltado (Peruvian) is basically a dish made up of marinated beef strips sauteed in onions and tomatoes served alongside a mound of white rice and french fries. The rice tasted AMAZING while the french fries were just OK in my opinion. Talk about loading up on carbs (and Don Churro's definitely serves HUGE portions so beware) Both of us had to ween off the rice despite the goodness of it and focused on all the meat present on our plates. $15. The Bandeja Paisa (Columbian) -- of course tiny me ended up ordering the bigger dish out of us two (it was massive). It contained grilled steak with a fried egg on top, two thick pieces of pork belly, chorizo, corn cake, slices of avocado, rice and beans. holymeatfest! I requested the grilled steak to be cooked medium and it came out perfectly tender and moist. The fried egg was a bit overly fried and not cooked overeasy the way I would've liked it, but I ate it nonetheless. The pork belly was fried (maybe baked) to a crunchy perfection who knows, but it was delicious. We only managed to eat the actual meat off it and left the fatty part of the belly since it was a bit too chewy. The chorizo was AWESOME(that is all). I didn't bother with the corn cake because it tasted a bit too tough and dry. Again, the rice which otherwise I would've gladly devoured with all the meat, I abstained from after filling up on the previous carbtastic dishes. The beans were like a better, and homemade version of pork and beans -- also delicious. $20. Yes, we did make room for dessert... Churros Rellenos - Two pieces of house-made churros - one stuffed with dulce de leche and the other nutella. This is obviously a must-order since this is their specialty. The dough was soft and moist and went perfectly with the warm fillings. $4 Tres Leches - A bit too sweet and not the milkiest I've had, but it did the job. I would probably stick to the churros. $5. Overall, I'd say this is a great authentic Latin-American restaurant. Very friendly and accommodating staff, great food, fun atmosphere. Had I known of this place sooner, I'd be a regular by now. End result: The "itus." WoW, next time we'll have to consider ordering a bit less. Note: EVERYTHING on their menu is made-to-order yet the service remains quite quick and consistent. Total plus. I went here last weekend with my wife and we had a great experience. The steak was cooked perfectly and the white rice was out of this world. When you order it medium rare it actually shows up medium rare so you can order exactly what you want. The service was very attentive but not overly so. It was friendly and prompt so A+ on that one. We could hear the cooks in the back and it sounded like they were having fun so I'm pretty sure my food wasn't made with sadness which is good. Tip: sit at a table, not on the bench along the wall. The service was excellent, the food was masterfully prepared (the juices there are made on-premises and everything is from scratch, from what I could tell) and prices are just right. TL;DR Excellent wait staff. OK appetizers. Very good entrees. Tasty desserts. Noticeable, but not overly long, wait between courses. I ate at Don Churro's with my wife and kids recently for dinner. We made a reservation via OpenTable and were seated very soon after arriving at the restaurant. Our waiter was *very* friendly and patient with our many questions about the menu. We made several selections based on his recommendations, which were pretty much spot on. For appetizers... The Chilena empanada was quite good. The sauce for the Yuca a la Huancaina was very tasty. Both appetizers were lukewarm (and could have been served hotter IMHO) For entrees... The best dish was the Silpancho, breaded steak w/french fries, rice, two eggs, and topped w/onions, tomatoes and jalapenos. It was a good-sized portion of food and was quite filling even for my teenage son. My younger son ordered the Milanesa de pollo, which was a simple but tasty breaded chicken cutlet, again w/fries (see a pattern here?). This would be a good entree for kids whose taste are too "old" for the kids menu, but may not have a "grown up" palate just yet. I had the Lomo Saltado, which had good flavor but the beef strips were a bit tough. Now dessert... if you like churros, then Don Churro's is *definitely* for you. We ordered churros three ways: filled w/Nutella, filled w/Dulce de Leche and plain churros w/Dulce de Leche on the side. Very yummy and a nice finishing course for our meal. A couple of other quick notes about our visit... The restaurant is not large, so definitely make a reservation if you've got a group of five or more for dinner. The restaurant was clean. I also appreciated the fact that you could see the kitchen from the dining area. Good restaurant for families that like meat (and french fries or rice). Lots of parking in the shopping center. I got take-out from here, so I can't comment on the restaurant. I was very pleased with my food, particularly their chicken sandwich and their ceviche. The garlicky ceviche was one of the best I've ever had. The fish was nice and clean-tasting and the juice was so good, I soaked everything else I ate in it to get more of the deliciousness in my mouth. My only complaint is that I spent nearly $30 on a sandwich and moderate-sized ceviche, but ended up with no leftovers. I feel like, for that price, I should get large servings. Either that, or prices should be dropped. Also, my ceviche was Peruvian style, with corn, sweet potato, and corn nuts, which was awesome. However, my hot corn and sweet potato were put in with my cold, semi-raw ceviche. By the time I got to eat my take-out, my ceviche was warm. That's not a problem when I'm eating it within 30 minutes, but it could be a health hazard if I didn't get to it right away. read more

Food: Good, Tasty. The reason for the 2 stars is the SERVICE/Management. The waiters are Fair but they could be trained way better. I went to buy a gift certificate and I couldn't believe what a shaft I felt like I was getting. The ONLY sold $25 and they gave me a coupon with an expiration of 12/30/2010. I bought it on 12/21/2010. When I told the guy about the coupon he said "dont worry about it". I said NO i am worried and he proceeded to ignore me. Finally I took a pen and crossed out the date. He initialed it for me after I asked him to do so. I would NOT have caught this unless I read this flimsy paper he gave me. In addition, He gave me the receipt to sign. When I looked at the total it was $50 vs. $25. They really need better management and staff. We don't go there anymore because my husband and I value great food with great service. read more

So glad to have discovered this place through Groupon. Their food is wonderful, plated well, and they obviously care about the quality. I had one of their "lunch bowls," and everything was cooked perfectly and super tasty (totally never going back to Chipotle after having one of those, mmmm redwine marinated steak bowl, yes thank you!) and a great price. Since I had the groupon I also had one of their empanadas and their churros with their chocolate hazlenut dipping sauce. Everything was fantastic, cooked well, spiced right, and lucky for me, not too sweet. Needless to say, lots went uneaten. The waitress that helped me was courteous, helpful and very patient in answering some of my questions about items I had never seen before. The atmosphere was much nicer than what I had come to expect from this genre of cuisine in this area, tastefully decorated, food thoughtfully plated rather than just thrown onto a plate, soft music during lunch time, it really was a great experience. Overall it really feels that the folks at Don Churro have a real passion for the food they serve and want it presented in the best way possible. It will be my go to place from now on. read more

Well mixed reviews here- decent service and like the fact that it's not a chain establishment food was very flavorful- I had the shrimp in a coconut sauce and the hubby had yellow rice with seafood. To drink I had a yummy passion fruit mojito and he ordered the margarita but the drinks took forever to get to the table it felt like... My main qualm was that after reading the website and it had on the front page- Celebrating International Women's Day with drink specials, 50% apps, and a free churro for ladies and our server never honored any of that!!! read more

Thank you Yelp! My husband and I stumbled upon this restaurant while heading out to West Virginia. We were hungry for Mexican food so I did my usual Yelp search. While no Mexican restaurants popped up...Don Churro Cafe did. This place serves Latin food (Salvadorian, Colombian, Venezuelan, etc) and boy what a pleasant surprise. The food was tasty and the prices were reasonable. I had the Churrasco and the flavor of the steak was delicious. My husband had the breaded steak and it too was good. Dessert.....of course we had churros and surprisingly, they were not the best. No...keep in mind that I am Cuban and I am used to the nice delicate churros that you dip in Cafe Con Leche. These churros were too dense for my liking but they tasted fine. All in all, I would probably come back to this place to eat. read more

This place has really changed. The menu on yelp is no longer available and the available one is very limited. Was told that the Herndon restaurant has the complete menu. The service is good but we haven't had our meal yet to offer advice on the food. Nice pour on the wines and The Peruvian Crystal beer is excellent. We will see if they honor the 15% discount for checking in via the Yelp app. The ambience is nice and the restaurant is quiet and conversation is easy. The mural on the bar side of the restaurant is eye catching and beautiful. I had the chupa de camerones which was fantastic.The arroz con pollo was only rice with very little chicken and had no taste. The empanadas were over cooked and my wife would not recommend them. First time for me to enjoy Ecuadorean food, we tried the shrimp ceviche, chicken fried rice... Everything was yummy!

We went there today and had brunch. My wife ate light but I had a traditional Peruvian Breakfast (chicken-stuffed tamale, pork on the side) and a couple of jambo con queso arepas (ham and cheese corn cakes). It was all quite good but not a "blast of flavor". The arepas were better than the tamale and pork. Then we finished with a nutella churro and it was pretty dang awesome! Like others, we had a "weird waitress". I just chalked it up to her being new, but I don't know that for sure. I'd go back and get a different meal, but wouldn't hesitate to get the jambo con queso arepas and nutella churros again! If our waitress rocked, I'd give this place a 4 easy. read more

I was quite disappointed with the food from restaurant... The service was great- super friendly and pretty attentive. We ordered Locro de papas (potato soup with queso fresco), the empanada sampler and the Carne asada con Menestra de fréjol (steak dish). The potato soup came out lukewarm, as if it had been sitting in the fridge until it got microwaved. This was the worst part of my meal. Now on to the empanada sampler. We got a mixture of empanadas ranging from a cheese one to a beef one. The cheese one was pretty good, chicken was extremely dry, and beef was dry as well. Not impressed. Lastly, the steak dish... Normally, these steaks are pretty thin (which was no different from this entree). The waitress asked how we would like it done. Surprised by the question, we continued to answer, "medium rare", just like any other times I would order a steak dish anywhere. It came out well done. Again, normally these dishes are pretty thin and I know during the cooking process, 9/10 times it will be well-done. But just that the waitress asked to offer something that she could not execute was not a plus in my book. The food is good. My father is Chilean and I married an Ecuadorian. I lived in Ecuador for a few years and their Ecuadorian food is great. Yes, service is slow and we are usually the only people there and still its slow. I guess I don't care because I lived in Ecuador and this is the way it is over there. Life is slower. Maybe we are just too much in a hurry? I don't know, I do think the service is slow but I don't seem to mind at Don Churros. We live in Gaithersburg and make the trip out there every month or so. read more

Delicious! Authentic! We came in at 7:00 pm. No one was there. Completely empty . I was skeptical on the place because of how empty it was. We were greeted by the waitress as was seated right away. She suggested a few things since it was our first time. She gave us some nuts while we waited for our food. The service was great until it started to get really busy. The food was delicious. Worst experience ever today!!!The whole order took about 2 hours to be brought out and it was not good at all. The wait staff was very unprofessional and, there was a lot other tables just getting up and leaving because nobody approach to them or their food was not there yet.
