Went for Lunch on Sunday, it was close to 1pm and the place was empty (I should have known better) We ordered A Duo causa, Lomo saltado, ceviche and Tacu tacu with Lomo. The causa was absolutely blend no flavor. Wondering if the cook here know about lime and Aji in the cause, nada, just salt. The lomo saltado was.. meh, the meat was overcooked and tough to eat could have been much better if the meat was cooked like someone cared. The ceviche was just sad, no flavor, no lime or Aji/rocoto. I have had much, much better than this. Dessert.. undercook churros (undercook!?) the flan was meh.. needed more air in the mix. We ended up returning the churros, were bad, too bad. Not coming back to this place.Ever. read more

I love Don Churros and probably go way more often than my wallet appreciates. Thankfully they're on restaurant.com and whenever there's a sale I load up on those $25 certificates (they're usually $2 or $3 a piece when there's a sale. the certificate says you have to spend at least $50 but that's easily done here, and even when I've been a little below they still let me use it). My standard orders are: Patatas Bravas - they taste just like the ones I got hooked on during a trip to Barcelona, a must order appetizer. Lomo Saltado - I always tell myself to order something new but this is too good to not go back to. Sangria - delicious, and a pitcher is easily finished by two people. The only reason I don't give 5 stars is because of Saturday nights. They have live music on Saturday nights (and maybe other times during the week, but this is the time I always encounter it). The issue is that the place isn't very big, and the music is so loud that you can't hear yourself think, let alone talk to your dining companions. Each time I've been there for this it's 2 guys with acoustic guitars but they use amps turned up to 11. Really, the place is small enough that we should be able to hear them just fine without amplification, and actually enjoy the experience instead of kicking ourselves that we forgot it was Saturday and not a good night to go. Anyway, just go, now! Just call ahead and see if there's live music scheduled. read more

The food here is average Latin American cuisine at higher than average prices at least for lunch. The atmosphere is casual and they have good sound system playing Latin American and Caribbean music. Service is better than average. I tried their chicken and found it too vinegary. On another visit I tried their shredded beef and found it on the salty side. The side of blacks beans it came with were undercooked, which is not a good thing when eating beans. Not sure if they soaked them properly ahead of cooking them. The fried plantains and rice were fine. Their flan is very thick. I wouldn't get it again...though I am sure any child would be happy eating it as it is sweet. read more

We went for Valentine's day, but skipped the "special" menu. We wanted to try a bunch of things. Do try the saltena (if you like them) Don't try the corn filled appetizer. It was okay, but nothing special. I got the half-meat plate..which had a variety of things.. sausage, steak, ribs, etc... it was quite tasty, though the steak wasn't spectacular. And of course, the nutella filled churro. Was great! Coulda had 3 more. The live music was a nice touch and its near Bungalow billiards which was a fun time afterwards. I just left this place with my husband and the new management is horrible. We waited a very long time to at least be asked what we wanted to drink. While then embarrassingly a couple came in and sat next to us and were immediately served drinks and ordered right away. They clearly saw us waiting and didn't care to ask if we were ready to order or ask what wanted to drink AND managed to skip bringing water to the table but they didn't forget the couple next to us. I'm not sure what I ate since this is a cuisine I'm not familiar with. The food was good, however. I asked the waitress to bring me appetizers until I ahd sufficient. I seem to recall eating three or four dishes. The service was good when the restaurant was nearly empty but became really distant when tables started illing up with "spanish-speaking people." The waitress didn't seem to speak much English and seemed to prefer waiting on tables in her native language. But the company was good so anything worked for me! I was REALLY leaning towards 3.5 stars here, but I'm leaning towards the 3 more based on the staff/service. I found this place based on a rave review from a co-worker so I decided to check this out with my girlfriend. We really had no idea what we were getting into here, but after a quick glance at the menu, I realized the hodgepodge of Latin American food items ranging from Argentina, El Salvador, Peru and Ecuador (maybe more, but I don't remember). In any case, I decided to stay with my favorite Pollo Saltado, while my girl ordered Lomo Saltado. We were quite impressed with the flavors and amount of food served for the price, so big win there. The place is well decorated and definitely sticks to its theme of Latin America but they are spreading themselves a bit too thin trying to serve all the many difference specialties from various Latin countries. They also tried to have somewhat of a tapas menu, but it did not look too attractive and a bit overpriced for the portions; having recently come back from Spain, I'm pretty sure what tapas should taste like and cost now. My complaints about the wait staff were that they were really not considerate of the experience of the customer since they sat us right next to the only other couple in the store, which was not only close and awkward, but they spoke really loudly and I came very close to just getting up and walking out. Note to wait staff: space people out when the place is empty! Aside from that, they were a bit slow to take orders and the final check.... maybe I'll come by and actually try one of their churro's. Been here a handful of times with friends, almost always on Sunday afternoons. Quality restaurant, with a varied and entertainingly unfamiliar menu, friendly, if not overattentive, wait staff, and a generally airy space. The fresh fruit juices are quite good, as are most of the tapas, the sandwiches, and the ceviche. But the real showstopper (aside from the titular churros) is the delicious Spanish hot chocolate. Its thick, rich, molten goodness is worth a visit all on its own. Just be careful not to visit on futbol days - the place fills to the rafters with soccer fans there to root for the home team. read more

The food here is excellent, well presented and the staff always pleasant, friendly and attentive. It's also very kid friendly and has served as both a quick meal out with the family and a lunchtime business meal venue. Furthermore the food is authentically Peruvian. At least in my experience having lived in Lima for more than a year. However, it is VERY expensive relative to other choices in the same Plaza. We go only as often as there is a Groupon or Living Social offer. Even so, the $10 for $20 offer they usually make is good perhaps for one entree or three tapas. If you in the mood for authentic Comida Latina, go Mon - Friday between 3-7pm. Let me start off by saying the servers are unproffessional. She made it seem like she was ordering and tried to force feed me the natural juices. Finally when I ordered my rice she insisted I try the pallea, and listed all the reasons why. Said no , in a nice way cause i was having a great day. I will say, the owner is a very nice. As far as the food my rice dish was good but I didnt really like the flavor of the clams/muscle. My gf loved the beef arepas, and said the cheese and chicken ones were below par. Had a 16 people party there last night. I cannot say enough about the service and how hard the staff worked to accomodate us. The food, in my opinion, has improved since the last time I was there about three years ago. Everyone in the party was impressed by the quality, taste, variety, and not least the large amount of food that was served with every plate. Probably the best reasonably priced Latin cuisine in the DC area. The tasteful decor, menu variety, and consistently great food are what really set Don Churro apart from its competition. I have made three trips to Don Churro in the last couple months. I have tried the churros, Churrasco, Lomo Saltado, and Papa Rellena. Everything was delicious, except the Papa Rellena did not live up to my expectations of this great restaurant - the meat filling lacked flavor. I especially liked the Churrasco, which is a thin steak served with rice, plantains, and an egg, sunny side up - great combination of flavors, and all ingredients seemed fresh and properly prepared. So, don't let Don Churro's boring strip mall exterior fool you. This restaurant is a great all-around choice for authentic Latin flavor. read more

Great Latin American restaurant. A decent variety of dishes. The best Mora smoothie I've had in the states! Colombia takes first place. I had tallarines Verdes with a mushroom saltado which they tailored since I don't eat meat. It was delicious! And was a major plus because lots of Latin American restaurants are usually hesitant to do so. The churros with dulce de leche were amazing too. Don Churro provides a variety of South American and Spanish dishes. As far as I can tell, they're the only restaurant specializing in Ecuadorian food in the DC area. The menu is labeled with flags to indicate which country inspired each dish. I say "inspired" because some of the dishes are a fusion of multiple cuisines. The ceviche de camaron is my favorite dish here. My only suggestion would be to serve it with chifles (a.k.a mariquitas... a.k.a chipilos... a.k.a plantain chips) in addition to popcorn. They also offer ceviche peruano, if that's more what you're looking for. On more than one visit, we ordered gambas al ajillo for an appetizer. Kind of a small portion, but the flavor and temperature were perfect. The dish was also served with tasty garlic bread. The sandwiches are another great option. My favorite is the Peruvian-inspired sanduche de pollo saltado. The sanduche de churrasco palta comes in a close second among the sandwiches. They have a happy hour, and we love their mojito de maracuya, pisco sour, and pisco sour con maracuya. Don Churro also offers sangria and a good wine selection. The churros are great for sharing with friends if you save room. Last, but not least, they have a projector and screen for South American futbol/soccer games. read more

This restaurant never disappoints. First time I visited Don Churro Restaurant was about 5-6 years ago and I always remembered wanting to go back. We were out in the Manassas area looking for a Latin restaurant and I remembered Don Churro Restaurant had fantastic food. The restaurant is open till 10pm on Sundays and there wasn't many people there at this time. The service was great and they recommended some very good dishes for us. We ended up getting the lomo saltado, the steak and a fish dish that I wish I remembered the name of. The lomo saltado was very tender and flavorful, the steak was well cooked and the rice that came with the dish was tasty because it was made with beans, had the consistency of a tamal. The fish dish was my favorite, the yellow sauce must definitely be the secret in this dish! The fish was cooked perfectly and the mariscos were a nice complement to the fish. We of course couldn't leave without trying the churros, we got one with Nutella and another with caramel, very delicious! Would make it an even better dessert if a scoop of ice cream was included. Overall I highly recommend checking out this place if you find yourself out in the Chantilly area. read more

NOTE: Don Churros is under new management and it's a good thing! Been here several time in 2017 and I can't say enough how fresh it is. The Arroz con pollo is my favorite standard. Incredibly fresh and a large portion for anyone (I'm a 6' 3 200+ active male). Super fresh ingredients and very well thought out spices make this dish a classic that stands out above other places. Their empanada selection is large with each of them being authentic and respective of where they are from. The churros are also great quality and I recommend splitting them with a few people unless you love large amounts of sweets, but they are great. The ceviche is also great, very well made and tastes extremely fresh. The prices are fair, slightly pricey for lunch (12-15), and fair for dinner (15-20) but very worth it at all prices. Well excellent food selection with each menu item clearly identified by its country origin. We live in Dumfries, and last night we were looking for a place that serves empanadas Chilenas. This place is the ONLY result that came up on Yelp. I am SO glad we drove the 50+ minutes to go here! The food's great, and the service is top notch! We satiated our craving for empanadas, accompanied with some Sangria. I had the Churrasco, while the rest of my family tackled the Milanesa and Silpancho. We finished this excellent meal with some churros filled with dulce de leche and some cold coffee drinks. The staff is very friendly, the owners introduced themselves and we had a pleasant conversation. The place itself has great balance. There's spanish music always playing in the background, but it's NOT blaring, getting in the way of conversation. The look is definitely spanish, but without going too far as to be overly stereotypical. They've got a few TVs (which at the time had a football match on) and a projection system to watch matches in style. Though we live rather far from Don Churro, we will definitely be coming back again and again. read more

I was hoping for more than one slice of sweet potato, but everything was good. I ordered the Flan and it was good. Firm texture and semi sweet with whipped cream on the side. I would come here again. In the past we had been to Don Churro restaurant several times and the food was fresh, well prepared and delicious. $14 to $22 for one Cebiche or one entrée is pretty expensive, but it was worth it, back then... We used to recommend Don Churro to anybody that wanted to eat good, authentic South American food. We were surprised to see the "Paella" and the "Gambos al Ajo" in the menu, since those are not South American dishes, but from Spain, so they were out of place. Once we did try the "Paella" and that was the only dish we tried back then that was not prepared well. They just served us some rice mixed with saffron and chorizo and some shrimps, etc. Not a real paella in any way. We do not recommend it at all. This summer we went to Don Churro again. The first thing we noticed was that the music was not from South America, but Spaniard. They kept playing the "Gipsy Kings"(French born musicians who sing in Spanish with an Andalusian accent...) We LIKE the Gipsy Kings, but it seemed out of place in this restaurant that claims to be authentic South American. We were there for more than 2 hours, and little music from South America was ever played. We ordered several appetizers. Half of them were good, and the other half were terrible! The good appetizers were the The "Trío de Arepas" and the "Yucas Fritas", which were nice and crispy. We asked for some hot sauce for the "Yucas", and we got a bottle with some green sauce. We tried to put the green sauce on the yucas, and a watery, green liquid fell on them. We had tried this green sauce in the past, and it used to be creamy and delicious. We could tell that there had been some green sauce left in the bottle, and somebody in the kitchen had just added some water! The liquid was tasteless and it looked disgusting. We ate the yucas plain. The bad appetizers were all the ones from Perú. We were so heartbroken because they used to be our favorite, and they used to be so well prepared in this restaurant in the past. At least one of the cooks in the kitchen was Peruvian, but now we doubt there is any Peruvian cook in there, or they would never serve these dishes. The "Tamal" was over seasoned and the chicken and the egg inside were very dry. We could tell the tamal was not fresh. The "Papa Rellena", was mediocre. The flavor was good, but it was mushy. There was no "Slightly Fried to Crispy Perfection", as listed in the menu, and as expected. We thought it might have been reheated, otherwise it wouldn't be so mushy outside. What a disappointment! The worst was the "Cebiche de Pescado", which used to be one of their best dishes. It had a slice of hot red pepper on top as garnish, but otherwise, it came with no hot sauce at all. (In Peru the hot peppers would be mixed in the cebiche. Since in the US many people cannot handle hot food, in Don Churro they do not mix it. In the past they used to give you some Peruvian hot pepper sauce on the side. Not anymore.) So, we had to ask for hot sauce and they brought us some. No problem. The onions were fresh and crispy, the fish tasted all right, but we noticed a lot of curdling in the lemon juice! It looked really nasty and we are sure that fresh cebiche lemon juice NEVER EVER curdles! (The Cebiche does not have any milk or anything to make the lemon juice curdle!) We realized that the fish must have been frozen, and the cook thought it was a good idea to just add hot water to unfreeze the fish (which would cause some curdling from the fish!) Then he just proceeded to add all the ingredients... He served it to us like that, with curdles floating all over the base of the cebiche! That's how we are sure there must not be any Peruvian cook left in that kitchen. We know that no proud Peruvian would ever serve a cebiche like that! One of the pleasures of eating cebiche is to drink the spicy lemon juice left at the bottom, which Peruvians call "Leche de Tigre" (Tiger's Milk). We had been looking forward to having some "leche de tigre" again. Obviously, we didn't even touch it this time. If Don Churro cannot prepare cebiche correctly, then they should just take it off their menu. Peruvians take a lot of pride on their cebiche, which is ALWAYS made of fresh, never frozen fish. Don Churro's cebiche is listed as "Peruvian Cebiche" and the one served to us was an insult to the fabulous Peruvian cuisine. The main dishes we ordered were the "Bandeja Paisa" from Colombia, and the Hornado con Llapigachos" from Ecuador. They were very good. We spent almost $100 in this meal, (including drinks, tax and tip) but this time we thought it was not worth it at all. We are sad to say that we will not be returning to Don Churro ever again, and for sure we will never recommend it again either. What a pity that a restaurant that used to take pride of the dishes they served, has let their quality go so low. read more

This was a favorite restaurant but they seemed to change the menu and a lot of the things that I usually had were gone. I always used to get the churrasco a la pobre and what they have now is just a 10 oz strip steak and a la carte sides. It was a little disappointing to have to build your own churrasco a la pobre. It just wasn't the same. We also happened to eat while they were having a fundraiser so there was music and there were a lot more people that we were seated in not the very best section smooshed into the corner by the bar. I felt like they were severely understaffed and it took about 10 minutes for our server to take our orders and he never came back to ask how our meals were. I'm just very disappointed because this was a favorite restaurant that we would frequent and now I don't think I'd be coming back here again. read more

I really like this restaurant- the food is well priced and well cooked with the meat dishes have an abundant meet and garnishes. On Saturdays they occasionally have a guitarist. The only complained that I've had is that the last time we went there they started picking up the chairs and cleaning before we finished our meal. We were the last customers in the place but that's not right. Everything else though is excellent. read more

This place is wonderful. I don't know if the people complaining about the food were here on a bad night or what but the meals I had were absolutely fantastic. I've tried the Arroz con Mariscos and the rice with duck confit (couldn't find the name on the online menu). The Pisco Sours are very good also. Sure the prices are a bit high but the quality of the food is even higher. A restaurant must be able to make money you know. I should also mention that the waitress Maigreth is adorable and very efficient. She works hard to ensure everyone gets good service. We and 2 other couples visited for valentines dinner. Sat us down and got us drinks. 20 minutes later they come back to take our order. We were dying to eat. Food came out at a reasonable amount of time and was well liked. The return time by their wait staff was not acceptable and to top it off, they automatically added 18% gratuity to our bills! Really? For checking on us every 20 minutes? We had to go up to the bar area at least twice to get someone's attention for more drinks. We went there last night. It was our first time dining in, and overall the experience was not what we expected: The good: - Pisco sour & maracuya sour are pretty good, go and get them! - the churros were absolutely delicious, filled with dulce de leche. - the lomo saltado was tasty, but where is the cilantro? I'm a Peruvian so no way to fool me on this one :) - the causa rellena de pollo (chicken) was yummie yummie :) The not-that-good: - the papa rellena: it looks perfect but the beef filling wasn't tasty at all, no flavour, very plain. I do like little salt on my food, but I have to put some more on this. - the empanadas: again the meat didn't have any season The filling of the beef empanadas is not plain ground beef with salt and pepper, as it was here. - the Pabellon de Caza: according to my husband (who i can say is a meat connoisseur) the beef was not seasoned at all. The bad: - service was very slow...or maybe was just that we got a sort of weird waitress. When we got there, the manager approached to our table, welcomed us and asked very nicely what we wanted to drink, we ordered 2 pisco sours. Then our waitress came and asked us what we want to order, we order 2 appetizers (since we're waiting for a couple of friends to arrive) and her response was: Nothing else?...so we explained her that we were waiting for a couple of friends and that will be our order for now. Then my friends arrived, the waitress came... My friend ordered a rum w/Coke and asked her what kind of rum they have...she said that she didn't know; we all were expecting she'd say then something like "i'll find it out for you" but instead she started saying that she wasn't 21 yrs old and she was not allowed to prepare drinks and therefore she has no idea what rum is available. My friend looked at her in disbelief and asked a margarita instead. Let's keep it simple :( I ordered the lomo saltado and I only ate half of it so when our waitress came to clean the table, gently asked me if I wanted a box for my food. I said "yes, thank you" and asked her if SHE can put it in a box for me. She kind of hesitate for a sec, said "sure!" and took the plate. Five minutes later she came back and told me she took my plate to the kitchen and somebody there trash it by mistake - "I'm sorry". Then she offered me to bring complimentary churros for dessert. At this point I just started laughing and said ok, bring me the churros. She walked away then without even offered the other 3 ppl on the table if they would like some dessert. She came back with the churros (2) and my friends asked her to bring another churros order. More than 5 mins later I haven't even touched my dessert, waiting for my friends' order to arrive...then the waitress came and told us they ran out of churros dough, so no churros for them :( and the whole idea of going to this place was to eat the churros!! I was so glad I didn't eat my churros so I was able to share them with hubby and friends. Bottom line: we won't go back to dine in, but for sure we'll go back to take out some churros :) read more
