Great mom & pop shop located inside the Mitsuwa food court. I walked around and reviewed each shop but based on price point and entree selections, I went back to Don Don Tei. I'm so happy I chose this place. I had the #6. Oyako-Don and the Mini Salad & Miso Soup set all for just $12.07. Wow what a great deal for a quick and hearty meal that is tasty. The mini salad and miso set made it on the healthier side too. I had to ask for soy sauce and some spice which they gave me Japanese red pepper powder. These did the trick in enhancing the flavor. What's nice about this food court is that they have staff who will bus your table. I came on a weekday before noon which wasn't too busy but as so soon as noon hit, the food court was bustling. Parking at Mitsuwa can be tight and challenging but do a quick circle and you're bound to find something. It's great they serve the Oyaka-Don in a ceramic bowl but not a fan of the cardboard containers for the soup and salad. Also wish we had real utensils to eat with rather than disposable.
This is a restaurant inside of a Mitsuwa Costa Mesa location. The order can be placed as a to-go item for certain products and not for other items. The parameters for that is unclear, but such is the ongoing nature and trend of many food establishments in SoCal. I ordered the katsudon to go. The order was made in-person and came out pretty quickly. I hate eating in a crowded food court especially at a place inside Mitsuwa. The tables are gross and people are everywhere. I find it too overstimulating. The food itself was ok. The seasoning didn't have enough balance between the salty, sweet, and umami flavors. It lacked the taste of dashi, mirin, and sake. So it had a rather one dimensional salty flavor and that was about it. The katsu itself was paper thin and it had the wrong cut of pork for it. The eggs were on the overcooked side and the rice had an odd sour vinegar taste to it. I presume they may have used the same rice utensils to scoop up what's meant for their seafood donburi like tekkadon for the katsudon. Ugh. Just another establishment I would give it a pass m unless I have a horrible craving for katsudon again. I really should have just waited 10 more minutes until Kagura opened at 1130. At least they excel in making katsu based goods.
For a price point under $15, pretty okay deal. Big fan of their rice actually, very well cooked and seasoned. The fish portion is a little small, the slices are very thin. But the minced tuna is really good!! Healthy and refreshing choice among the options at the food court and affordable.
Hole-in-the-wall vibes tempura spot with reasonable prices. This place is okay/good and I come here when I miss Japan. The #3 special is the seafood mix and the #5 special is the egg-y pork mix. Both hit the spot when I'm craving tempura but it won't bring the magic like Japan. Bonus points for being able to buy extra goodies inside Mitsuwa to snack on as well. Also this place doesn't have AC so can get hot in the summer.
Very busy parking lot, there is too much to do at Mitsuwa and they really need a larger lot. This food court is amazing and Don Don Tei is a great option. The rice bowls are a great price per value in this climate. The Chicken Katsu that we went with was basic but had everything you would want in at a very reasonable price. The taste was good and my 3 year old yelper gave them the same 5 stars that I would. Overall don't miss on this if you like Japanese rice bowls.
Order the chicken katsu for little one and the portion is big!! I would say this is the cheapest compared to other food stalls. The chicken is crispy and it comes with bowl of rice and miso soup. The food came out so quick and it's clean!! It's just hard to find a table during the weekend. The place is super crowded. They also accept credit card now. Totally like this place!!
FOOD: 5/5 SERVICE: 4/5 AMBIANCE: 4/5 In the Mitsuwa food court, I've tried basically every restaurant in here and this one has amazing value. The oyakodons are splendid! I've also tried their chirashi bowls, curry, and katsu plate but the oyakodons are the best. Nice and flavorful rice, soft egg, delicious! Would get again (and probably will lol)
Super good and low cost! It really is a little overwhelmingly crowded to come here on a weekend, so try to come on the weekdays! I got the Katsu bowl which was great for only 12$!
I got the Mix Seafood Don to go and everything tasted amazing. Fish was fresh and it was very affordable! This is a small restaurant in the middle of Mitsuwa Food Court. The parking at Mitsuwa is very hectic but they have a parking garage so there's plenty of parking. Even though it was very busy and crowded, food came out very quick. While we waited we walked around the store. They have a Daiso connected and a lot of other things to look at.
This food court in Mitsuwa is so convenient and the options are often affordable and decent! I got the Salmon Don, simple and great. Getting lunch here is fun as its lively. I always feel really weird leaving the bowls and trays behind, but there's no return station and someone always comes to clean them up.
As I walked into Mitsuwa's bustling food court, I felt like I was stepping into a Japanese mall food hall. It wouldn't be in Mitsuwa fashion if all the lines weren't long. I joined the long line at Don Don Tei, which thankfully moved fast enough that I barely had time to debate my order. I tried both the regular and Special Katsudon--and honestly, they tasted pretty much the same, except the Special seemed a smidge bigger (still not sure what made it "special"). The pork was tasty and comforting, but in a food court packed with tempting spots with Ramen, Yakitori, Udon and Curry, I'd probably explore other stalls first next time. Good, solid katsudon fix--but not a life-changing bowl.
There's no way you can get a bowl of authentic quality Katsu Don for $9.75 other than at DDT. It's the best shop at Mitsuwa Costa Mesa.
Quick service at the Mitsuwa food court, despite the busyness during the lunch rush on a Sunday. We got the Salmon Don and the Mini Katsu Don with Soba Set. Both were tasty. The salmon sashimi was FRESH and the portions were pretty good for the price. The foodcourt is always packed but we were lucky enough to find seating relatively quickly, before the food was ready! Definitely would come back for the Salmon Don after a quick grocery run at Mitsuwa!
I was reluctant to try this place because it only has three stars but I got tired of eating Santouka all the time so wanted to try something else at the Mitsuwa food court. As the name suggests, this place just serves rice bowls with various toppings of meat or fish. I tried salmon (raw) bowl on my first visit and I thought it was pretty decent. It wasn't the best but at least the salmon tasted clean without any fishy smell or taste. It did require little bit of soy sauce and wasabi to give it a taste but I thought it was definitely acceptable. The Mix Poki-Don was much better. It's really more like a sashimi bowl than a traditional poke bowl but it really didn't matter to me. The fish was a combination of thinly sliced salmon and ahi with little bit of soy sauce added. it had shredded lettuce, sliced cucumbers, green onions, and some shiso leaves. The shiso leaves were somewhat overpowering at times so you may want to take these out if you don't like the fragrance. The fish tasted fresh and I liked the overall taste. The rice was firm, slightly cool, and had little touch of vinegar (I think). This will definitely be my second choice at this food court if I'm not in the mood for Santouka ramen. read more
It was a hot day in April and I decided I wanted cold noodles. There are 2 choices that I saw in the food court for this and I elected for Don Don Tei because they had a cold soba and mini katsu bowl combo. The katsu was a fail (processed and soggy), but the soba was good. Overall, I left satisfied because the cold soba is what I came for. Reasonable price and quality, but not something I would go out of my way for. read more

Don't know what everyone else is referring to, but I love their salmon don. Perhaps they improved over time, but their mixed seafood don is also a good choice. Compared to other places, this will always be my go to when I'm craving nigiri in a bowl. read more

It's hard to decide what to order here since everything looks amahzing! I finally decided on the dish labeled as #1: Ten-don. When my order was up I enjoyed a generous portion of panko breaded tempura shrimp and veggies over rice. The order was up within 10 minutes and my friend and I enjoyed our meal in the bright food court of the Mitsuwa. Prices here are very fair for lunch and you'd be hard pressed to find this quality of lunch outside these four walls for this price and this quality! I know where I'm voting on having lunch next time i'm in town! read more

I came here for lunch on a Saturday with a couple friends. Don Don Tei is located inside the food court of Mitsuwa Marketplace. Parking for the Marketplace is easy to find, there is a parking garage located on the side as well. The food court itself is generally crowded, so make sure that you bring cash (everything is cash only in the food court) and that someone is hunting for a place to sit before all the food comes. The food: Seafood Mix Don for around $8 -Food proportion reasonable for the price, fish is fresh and came in different variety. Unlike other don rice bowls, the fish here isn't as stingy. There is enough fish for every bite of the rice. Spicy Tuna Don for around $8 -Relatively spicy red sauce already mixed into the bowl, a lot of lettuce to fill the bowl, and less fish than the seafood mix one. Regular katsu don for around $8 -Really good grilled onion sauce that goes with it making the meat and bowl extra tasty. I loved this one! Overall, this place is recommended.. Food was reasonably priced, reasonable proportions, and service was quick! read more

This restaurant offers some authentic Japanese cuisine. This type of food is typical comfort food in Japan and every time I am In Orange County I stop by this place. I always order cold soba as a set usually with Katsu don or tempura. Their oyako don is also very delicious and I really can't wait to go back to this place. This place is usually pretty crowded on the weekends and finding a seat at this food court can be challenging. But it's always worth it to wait for a seat to open up. read more

I wanted to be a bit adventurous at Mitsuwa at the time, and instead of going for my usual favorites of Santouka or the Gyutan place, I decided to give Don Don Tei a try. Unfortunately it was a bad choice, as I found the food was mediocre. I got the pork katsu plate, and it came with miso soup and a tofu side dish, along with some salad on the plate. The pork katsu tasted fine, it tasted what I would expect of a fried piece of pork, and the tonkatsu sauce that came with it tasted fine too. It's just that there was nothing special about the plate, I felt like I could get something similar elsewhere, there was nothing that really stood out about the dish. Considering this place is in the Mitsuwa food court near all the other great food choices, I really can't see myself coming back to eat the food here. If I really wanted a lot of the items on the menu, I would probably just go to the market itself to buy the food items, or hop over to Miyabi-Tei, which I believe offers somewhat similar items that I feel taste a lot better (for the cooked stuff at least). read more

Great chicken and egg bowls or beef and egg bowls here. The service was very good and the food is fresh. Parking is also a fight here if you get here during rush hour. I would strongly recommend the katsu don bowl or any of the salmon bowls! read more

Located in the Mistsuwa Marketplace food court, Don Don Tei serves rice bowls with a wide variety of options such as salmon, chicken, chicken katsu, tempura, tuna, and more. There was many dining options but I decided to give them a try. I got the Mini Katsu Don and Soba Noodles ($8.60). Firstly, the portions are plenty, although it's mostly carbs. The katsu was disappointing, I had higher expectations. I've had better and won't be getting it here again. The soba noodles were cooked al dente but lacked any flavor until you drenched it in the sauce they provided. Overall, it was a three stars meal. Will probably try the other places in the food court if I come back here. read more
This is the very first time I've ever had Katsudon and Don Don Tei definitely delivered! This dish is a piece of katsu chicken inside an omelette batter and onions served on top of rice. It was one of the most tastiest dishes I've ever had. Every bite leaves me wanting more. Definitely recommend grabbing this dish if you find yourself a Mitsuwa!! read more

I've been going here since my years at UC Irvine and I still get the oyakodon here everytime. The egf and chicken is cooked great and there's a lot of it too. They don't skimp on the goods. Can get more green onions for that springy taste and add some spice to it. It's good and has just enough flavor for me to enjoy it. read more

I went to Mitsuwa food court for cheap lunch. I didn't want Santouka so I went to Don Don Tei instead. Ordered katsu don and seafood mix don. No 5 special katsu don $6.95: not enough sauce and the katsu was average at best. Some pork slices were thin and some were thick. No 11 seafood mix don $7.95: the salmon was pretty good and fresh (for the price), spicy tuna and tuna slices were not edible. They tasted bland like old frozen tuna. The rice needed more vinegar. The receipt showed Mugimaru & Dondontei. Maybe they belong to the same company? Now I am afraid to try Mugimaru if they have the same quality. 2 stars!! Don Don Tei is not yummylicious!! read more
I liked my salmon-don here. This might be one of the safer picks here. My only complaint is that the slices were ultra thin, like see-through thin... haha. I have to make a complaint about the zaru soba here. Why do I not get free grated daikon? It's honestly mind-boggling that this is an add-on that I have to pay for... I've never eaten zaru soba without grated daikon but at this place, you not only have to pay for it (75 cents I think), they make you go next door at the udon place to get it. I really don't understand why they sell zaru soba here and not have their own grated daikon provided for free. When I first asked for it, they acted like why would they carry such a thing... Expensive little Poke bowl. Truly not enough for 1 person. Consider getting something else in the Mitsuwa Marketplace to go with this tiny snack. If I were on a diet, I would order this by itself. It's not bad at all, but it does not seem the freshest. Nothing extravagant about it either. It's alright for a light lunch. However, life is too short to keep eating just A-OK food. read more
A new food spot in Mitsuwa has just opened! Don Don Tei rice bowl spot in the market. It was fairly crowded during lunch and I think this place opened last week. The service here was a bit slow but the quality of the food was good stuff. I ordered the Seafood mix bowl, green tamago, and miso soup. The seafood bowl had ground tuna, tuna sashimi, and salmon sashimi. All the fishes were really good and the rice itself was soft. The green tamago was a partially undercooked egg. I tossed it into my bowl and I loved how ooey gooey it was. The miso soup was pretty standard to everywhere else I've had it. A good lunch spot though. The service here still needs a little work. They didn't look too happy and didn't work quickly to get the anxious people their food. Recommendation: Seafood mix bowl and green tamago read more

I had a huge craving for donburi and decided it was time to give Don Don Tei a try. I ended up ordering the Spicy Tuna Bowl despite what other reviewers had said about it. Well, I will actually agree with the others; it was not that great. My rice had a little too much rice vinegar in it which resulted in a very sour taste. At the same time, my spicy tuna tasted fishy. Not a good fishy but a this-has-been-in-the-fridge-wayyy-too-long fishy. Ugh, not ordering that again All the more positive reviews seem to talk about how the cooked meat bowls taste better, but it would be hard to sway me to come back to Don Don Tei with Miyabi Tei right next to it and serving the same bowls. 2 stars for you! read more
I decided to give this place a try since every line in the food court is long. This is not your ramen or udon bowl kind of shop. They serve rice bowls. It makes me wonder why their line is so short when everything on display is so deliciously good looking. Well, my friend got their salmon bowl, and I got their chicken katsu with egg. I think my bowl has some kind of special going on because it is currently only $6. Original price is $7? Well, the salmon bowl is not as special. They slather on a bunch of salmon on top, and decorated the ginger nicely on the side and ta-da! They should have used sushi rice to make the whole bowl complete. The salmon is not fresh and it doesn't have that buttery taste to it. Not only is that, for $10, the bowl so small. My chicken katsu was bigger and it was good! I didn't know mine came with caramelized onions, which compliments my rice bowl pretty well. The chicken katsu was well deep fried and the egg went pretty well together. This is cheaper than and as delicious as Curry House. If I had that curry pack, I would have microwaved that and pour it all over that rice. You will need to add a little soy sauce over your rice because it does get bland after a while. Heck, pour some hot sauce for some extra kick. I will come back because the food is cheap. The line is not as long. And it's nice to stray away from the $10 ramen next door. read more

Went shopping at Mitsuwa, and was starving. I was going to eat at Santouka like everyone else, and since there wasnt a long line at DDT, I thought - go for it. I was meeting my hubbster for lunch and went ahead and ordered for him too. Their display of poki bowls and katsu bowls with good prices convinced me enough to go with the Poki-don and Seafood mix bowl. Staff was average, only one guy working, and its cash only. After ordering, I waited 15 mins, then my number was called. Food is tasty, a little too spicy on the poki-don, but delicious. Hubbster loved his seafood mix bowl of tuna and salmon sashimi. Portions were plenty. OverALL: A quick fix if you've been shopping. Its A-OK and not much else. worth a try for something different. read more

Their cooked dishes taste cheap, with low quality meats, too much badly cooked rice, bland sauces, katsu not crispy enough and egg makes it even worse, beef was nasty, tasted old. While it looks like a lot of food, they cut corners here. Prices are decent for a fast meal, if you aren't expecting much. The girl working the register was dismissive and rude to my wife when she had to return to get condiments. Seating is abysmal here. We had to move trays of filthy dishes just to sit. I just don't like this place. It has a cafeteria feel with subpar food and service. No thanks. read more
I finally got to try this place at Mitsuwa yesterday. You don't see a restaurant in OC just dedicated to Donburi so I was very excited to see this place open in Mitsuwa. I ordered Special Katsudon aka "Manpuku" Katsudon. I asked the worker what is the difference between regular Katsudon on the Menu and I was told it uses bigger Pork Cutlet. My initial impression was it looked smaller than I have imagined and was wondering if it will satisfy my stomach. But I was proved wrong as I started to dig into the Katsu. As you can see in the photo, Katsu is cut in non-traditional way. Each Katsu was crisp, juicy and thick, coated with egg evenly, and well marinated. Many Katsudon I had in OC they go cheap with sauce for some reason that I always end up with lots of plain rice without any sauce. They didn't go cheap with the portion, but not to the point of drenching the rice. It was just right amount. The word "Manpuku" literally means "Filled-stomach" but it also comes with the notion that you are very satisfied with the meal. Surprisingly I was very satisfied and enjoyed every bite as if I am a judge from the Anime "Shokugeki No Soma" Also it reminded me of my childhood in Japan, when I often ordered Katsudon for delivery to home when parents are gone for work. It's that good. Had many Katsudon but there are only few that reminds me of the Katsudon from my childhood. Haven't tried other dishes yet but Don Don Tei definitely is underrated on Yelp. Inside the Mitsuwa Marketplace food court. They have many different bowls that you could try like. Go look at all the fake food displays they have in front of their store to see what you want. What we got: Katsu Don & Special Katsu Don: I was thinking there was something different between the regular katsu don and special katsu don, but the only difference is that one seems bigger than the other. Just get the regular katsu don because it's a lot of food already. We got the food to-go because the place was so packed, but you could only get the cooked items to-go so none of those raw fish bowls...The katsu was like huge pieces of chicken nuggets. They were a bit hard to bite into though. The egg was sweet and so was the rice. I wish there were more onion pieces in it though. Would I get this again? Maybe if i was really craving it, but I would want to try the other sashimi bowls. Service: I would go look for a table and then have one person order the food for you. It will suck if you have your food, but no where to sit and eat it. But the girl that took our order was nice, but not much to it. Order what you want, wait for your number, and off you go! read more

I am so glad we gave this place a try! We didn't feel like eating Santouka so we wanted some tempura. The Ten-Don and Katsu-Don are delicious. They make each dish fresh and pretty fast. Can't wait to come back! read more
