After nearly 20 years in Novato, I am really not sure why I keep going back there. Their service is the worst. Be that pool service, repair, or else, there is not a time when it is just ok. My latest is pool sweep repair. They kept it for well over a month, called me with a quote and I picked it up. No surprise, there is a little surprise with it. The tubing they installed are different color then all other parts of the sweep, and ... they did not even replace the entire tubing. So now part of my tube is white and part transparent. Not a big deal? Yes, big deal, it looks terrible. And it is always like that, always something bad. I don't know yet if this thing works, but I know for sure I am not going back. I have to tattoo this on my arm. Update: the sweep does not work. Stay away from these hacks. read more

I called for booster pump motor problems. They put me at a week out and called just as they promised the next week. Next day Val from the service department came out to see what was going on. He said it sounded like the capacitor and that if he could take it to the shop to look at it, that could save me some time and possibly money. He took it and bright and early the next morning he called and said, "all fixed, I can bring it by now, if that works". 10 minutes later he was here, 15 minutes later, all done with everything running spot on. Capacitor was replaced saving possibly hundreds on a new motor. Thanks, guys, and make sure Val gets kudos for this! read more

I hired DJ pool when I moved in, in March of this year. By the first week in July this is what my pool looked like. The tiles were covered with scale and my pool looked like a swamp for 3 weeks. I was constantly told to do things myself (ie scrub the tiles, brush the walls, blow the filter) I was paying for a weekly service. I would often call several days before my scheduled time to let them know what was going on and would be told that whatever was needed to address the issue would be sent with my pool technician. This would never happen, and when I would speak to the technician he would say that he was unaware of my calls. Needless to say, I ended my relationship with DJ (oh guess what? The office never told the technician-shocker- and he showed up) hired a new company and within 48 hours my pool was clean, sparkling blue and FINALLY swimable!! read more

Inherited Don Johnson's pool service from the previous owner of the home we recently bought and even though we got offered much better rates from other companies, we decided to stay with them because of their 2yr+ experience with the pool. We tried them for 6 months (Oct - Mar) -- and we actually did not move in until the latter 3 months. Encountered a lot of issues including: 1) Service schedule confusion & missed service calls - insisting we had to be on weekly cleaning even though it was winter and we weren't living there. After they ending up missing 3 weekly service calls (which were initially debated until I mentioned my security video cameras), they finally said that we could go to bimonthly service for both pool & spa. 2) Billing constantly had to be corrected as any service changes would not be reflected in the bill. (They were good about crediting me for missed service calls however.) 3) Cleaning not thorough - worms would be left on the bottom of the pool after a cleaning (literally checked right after service man left) and pool trough was super dirty and full of algae. 4) Unnecessary equipment upgrades - told I needed to replace a spa remote lost by the previous owner. Waited over a month for the remote as they initially ordered the wrong model, and then when they came to install, they realized I never had a remote to begin with as there was no antennae installed. 5) Unresponsive - I wrote an email to complain about the cleaning issues and feeling I got ripped off for a clunky spa remote control I didn't need (also learned I could get a smart remote for the same price they charged me). I asked them to please call me to discuss how we could fix these issues going forward. I got a courtesy email that their manager would address my complaints, who never called or emailed. Finally cut my losses and started with a new pool service company. Two service calls later, pool is super clean and balanced for 70% of the price! read more

Three cheers (and 5 stars) to Don Johnson Pool and especially Taylor & Woody for caring and taking the time to help me fix my green algae problem with my pool! Previously I went to two other well known pool companies in the area asking for help without any resolve. The other company sold me chemical treatments that didn't work and quoted me a thousand dollars to come check equipment and clear the pool. I spent weeks following their directions only to stare at my puce green pool day after day. In desperation I sought out a 3rd pool company- Don Johnson Pools. I took a water sample to DJ pool and Taylor & Woody very thoroughly diagnosed the problem. I followed their advice and voilà within 3 days my pool was bluer than blue!! (and all for under $100) These good folks at Don Johnson care about their customers and they are not trying to oversell or quote outrageous prices. I am one happy DJ Pool customer! read more

In the past two weeks after having some problems that were difficult to fix with three service calls, Michael Boggs came to my home personally and realized that he had to send his very top technician/electrician over. After three decades of using their service I needed a new heater. The entire process took two months of constantly calling to force them to install the new heater. Absolutely the worst customer service, these people wouldn't answer my questions about scheduling the installation. They gave me the run around, lying about calling me back, lying about schedule, and acting like I was rude for calling every single day at 9am for a week wanting information. I told them I shouldn't have to call them everyday just to be told they would call back and never get any answers. Then she told me I hadn't called everyday. Sorry, I don't deal well with blatant liars. I certainly will never recommend this business again as I have in the past. These people should not be trusted. read more

Our pool sweep stopped working. Then the filter would not go on. Big trouble I was thinking. I called Don Johnson's. Ken came out within a day and diagnosed the problem. It actually was a combination of several problems. After fixing the first two situations, it was ultimately decided that we needed a new pool sweep pump. Ken came back in three days and installed the pump. Then he took the time to check EVERYTHING out from top to bottom. He made certain that all of the connections for the filter and the sweep were tightened up so that we would not have any more problems. Ken was an extremely agreeable person. He gave my husband advice on how much chlorine needed weekly for our pool. He said to be sure to call them anytime if we had any future problems. Kathy who works in the office, and I guess does the scheduling and invoicing, also could not have been nicer. Would highly recommend them. read more

They received 1 star so that this review would post. I just terminated Don Johnson who had been maintaining 3 family pools in Marin for approximately 2 years. Without getting into the gory details, the new maintenance company discovered evidence of neglect all all locations that will cost nearly $1,000 to remedy. My experience with their routemen leads me to believe that they are allowed to operate without proper training. Be aware that this is the "civil version" of my observations. Had I known then what I now know, I would never have hired Don Johnson. Caveat emptor! read more

While the service has generally been excellent, they are certainly a high-priced operation. They seem to increase their prices more often than not. As a 20 year plus customer, they were totally unwilling to give me any price break with their latest increase as of May nor agree to a modified/reduced winter schedule. My pool is never used and has an electric cover which is only opened part way for their servicing which takes very little time. Poor customer relations for sure. read more

Some guy from here came to my house saying he had a service call. When I told him we didn't call him he was very pushy and insistent. I felt extremely uncomfortable, especially during a pandemic, that he was not taking no for an answer and trying to get into my yard. The previous owner he referenced was a few owners and years ago. It was an extremely unnerving experience. I called the company the next day to verify it was in fact a mixup and not some random guy and also so they'd be aware and could change their approach. The woman I spoke with was EXTREMELY RUDE. Before I could even explain what happened, she interrupted me, and tried to excuse it away by telling me how "nice" the repairman was and how he was "best" person. It wasn't "nice" to have some strange man try to talk his way onto my property and not take no for an answer. If this is how they handle a "paperwork" mixup, I'd hate to see how they deal with problems that require money or actual repairs. There are tons of pool companies, no need whatsoever to work with people who don't value customer service. Swim, don't run from this place. read more

Our central-Marin pool has salt-water chemistry and was rebuilt in 2012. Our previous service lost control of the balance and calcium crystals appeared all over the interior surface (looked like white sand adhering to the dark blue gunite). Although they made a good effort to remediate the damage, it was time to pick a new service. Don Johnson's (DJPS) was competitive on fees and they have been absolutely reliable and keep everything just the way they should. May 2015 Update: new problems (NOT the fault of DJPS) have arisen and we have had to arrange for service and repairs to our equipment. Although the repairs are not yet complete, we have already seen that John has an excellent understanding of what exactly needs to be done. We should be back to enjoying our aquatic amenity (-: very soon. read more

After being customers at the store for five years, we made the mistake of inquiring about a service call at our house. We discussed the time and the services to be rendered which was a quick pool vacuum in the next two days. Close to the end of the phone call we inquired about how much the service call would cost and were told $80. We thought that was unreasonably expensive for what amounted to 15 -20 minutes of work and said never mind we will find a neighbor to do it. Apparently there was a misunderstanding and they sent someone out to clean the pool anyways and then billed us regardless of the fact we didn't actually book the appointment and we didn't want the service. When we disputed the charge they claimed we made the appointment and threatened us with small claims court. Well, we still own a home with a pool that will require chemicals, pool toys, pump and filter parts. Don Johnson just lost all of that future business because they were to proud to admit they made a mistake and too rigid to do the right thing and retract the bill. We compromised and split the bill but be warned, take notes and be triple sure they understand what you want and don't want because they'll extort the money from you if they misunderstand. read more

Their repair service has deteriorated. They use cheap parts and are sloppy. They replaced a valve on my system 5 years ago but used a very cheap plastic valve. I have two other valves that are 20 years old but are quality and still fine. They used the excuse they only warranty parts for a year but if they used quality parts it would be fine. I ended up having to do it myself. Their parts shop is ok but don't use them for repair. read more

My salt water system wasn't working. I called to schedule service and was told it would be 10 days before they could come out. After 10 days passed and no calls, I called again. And again. And again. I got voice mail for five straight days and no call backs. The week after that I got a call from Cathy saying she had been out sick for a week and that's why I didn't get a call back. What kind of business has no one covering the phone for a solid week??? I had to kill a lot of algae because they didn't get to me in time. Finally someone came out to fix it, but said I would probably need a new cell and he would get me a proposal. The proposal never came. I called them about that and a new problem with the pool. That was two days ago and no one has called back. I will never call Don Johnson's again. They clearly don't care about paying customers. If Yelp had a no star option, that's what I would've picked. read more

We had Don Johnson's come out to give us an estimate for our hot tub. They came out unannounced while we were not home. They later gave us an estimate for new jets. After we made the purchase of new jets they sent us an invoice for a "service fee". They charged $96 to come out, apparently thats their stand fee. However they don't tell you that in advance and when I called I was told "We can't be expected to let everyone know what our fee is before we come out". They said they would look into my situation, never heard from them again and they sent another statement. Very disappointed in this company. For a local business they don't seem to care about their customers and their communication is terrible. read more

Our pump went out for our pool filter and I called around to different pools stores and was surprised by the expense. I went into Don Johnson's and the entire staff was friendly and helpful. After talking to the technician he explained to me that I could get away with a smaller pump than I had. He quoted me a price substantially less than the other stores. He also told me that he could have it installed within a week. I agreed and he showed up a week later. He quickly installed the new pump, cleaned up and left in no time at all. The new pump is running great and is much quieter and more efficient than the old one. It was a great experience and I will be giving them my business from now on. read more

I have been using Don Johnson's Pool and Spa for several years now. Their technicians are always curious and professional. Recently I noticed a problem with my pump. I called and they sent a tech out within hours of my call. With everything going on (COVID 19 specifically) I was not expecting such an immediate response. They always provide a detailed explanation of their work and never do anything without notifying me first. I appreciate good customer service and Don Johnson's has been providing just that since they began servicing our pool. We have had Don Johnson service our spa for a couple of years. They did a reasonable job, though the bill was always higher than we expected. We had to fire them though, because they refused to not drain our 500 gallon spa during this drought. We could not justify wasting 500 gallons of water when we explained that the spa is almost never used. They insisted that they had to drain it and refill it every few months, and would not be flexible about it. We felt we had no choice but to discontinue our relationship with them. read more

I don't often have disputes with vendors and this is my first negative posting. I sent an advance copy to the vendor to see if they had any comment and I did not receive a response or challenge to my comments. For background, I manage over 140 residential units plus commercial properties so I deal with many vendors. I am also a professional (attorney, broker and I hold other degrees). Don Johnson sent a repair man out for an estimate to repair a hot tub that had been out of service for 2 years since the tenant did not want use. The repair person was friendly. I asked for an estimate for repair before starting and was given an estimate. Excluding the extras ordered (e.g. hot tub cover), the repair bill went over the estimate and the repair was not completed. I was told that there was a leak underground so I would have to bring in another repair person who could locate the underground leak. I brought in another repair company who located the leak ABOVE ground. I paid the second company and requested some adjustment since the billing was over the estimate and the repair was not completed resulting in paying a second vendor to do the repairs. I also found it outrageous that the manager seemed to suggest that I knew about the leak. There was an unsatisfactory resolution. I am paying the invoice, but I will not use their services again. They did delete the charges of $180 for cleaning the spa against the complained for overcharges, but then despite the statement, they still billed for that item. read more

We bought an old house with an old pool about 6 years ago. The pool was just NASTY when we moved in, we could not even see through the surface of the water. we stopped in at Don Johnsons, That's who had installed the pump system according to the stickers on the filter, and they had the pool running and swimmable in a VERY short time! Since then we have used them religiously. They are always very friendly and happy to help you with any problem that you may have, I have had a lot of them. I would recommend them to everybody with a pool or spa. read more

We have used them for pool repairs for about 10 years. It can take a week or so to get someone out, but the work is done well and is usually in the range of the estimate. I'm particularly impressed with the quality of their work on older equipment, which is why we continue to use them. I'd rather wait a few days and get someone who knows what they're doing than have someone come out right away who can only suggest replacing everything. read more
