This was my 2nd time at Don Luis since they took over the location for El Paso, and both times the food and service have been reliably great. They kept the hand carved and painted chairs, so with all of the other over the top decor, it makes for a very fun ambiance. The food and vibe is more Tex-Mex than authentic Mexican, but there's nothing wrong with that. I got the Plato Azteco, which was absolutely delicious. We sat at the bar, and the highlight was our bartender, Dora. She flies around making drinks, answering phones, taking care of customers, cleaning her station, and does it all with genuine warmth. BLUF: Service was good. Food was ok tasting. Visual appeal-50/50. Sense some quality issues in the kitchen need resolution. Booze was tasty but expensive for a glass not fully filled. Let's start at the beginning. The chips and salsa. What I live for when looking forward to some good Mexican food! Yuck for the chips. Very bitterly rancid but crispy. Red salsa tasty. Green salsa would make your face shrivel up from all the salt. The drinks. Tasty, but you end up feeling kinda cheated because the glasses aren't fully filled with the actual drink but amply filled with ice. At $12 each, for a few ounces of a mixed drink, you're left feeling rather thirsty. The atmosphere. It's nicely decorated, and seems roomy. We were seated in the bar for a late lunch. It wasn't very crowded. TVs everywhere in the bar. A good place to hang out for a beer and a sports-filled afternoon maybe? The food. Hmmmm. While the food wasn't awful, it wasn't very memorable. One dish looked a bit gross when it arrived at the table and it was way too salty. And the other looked ok, but there wasn't much to it, including flavor. When I think of a chimichanga, I'm looking forward to a substantially filled burrito (at least rice, beans, deliciously-seasoned meat, guac, salsa or sauce, cheese or no cheese) fried perfectly in fresh oil. What I got was mostly a deflated flour tortilla filled with maybe a tablespoon and a half of dry shredded meat. Worth the drive? Ummm, probably not. Don Luis is close to my home, and the recent reviews look good, so my wife and I decided to try it out. The atmosphere is fiesta, the menu is broad, and the food is tasty, apparently made with fresh ingredients. That being said, the prices are higher than I expect in a Mexican restaurant, but it's 2026, so maybe not unexpected. The service is friendly and attentive, but also obvious in upselling the already pricey drinks and extras. We ordered the large guacamole, which was fresh and tasty, but not what I would call large - I probably would never order the small one, having seen that. The fajitas were really good, and the portion was big enough to share, but you might want to request extras on the condiments and tortillas, because the amount they bring you is not proportionate to the sizzling peppers and onions (with some meat in there, but again not enough in proportion. Overall, I feel like this place gets more money out of you than the food is worth, and being solicited to upgrade throughout your meal, as well as the heavy-handed request for a five-star Google review, doesn't enhance the overall experience. Really good Mexican food at affordable prices if you order with strategy. We came here after a pumpkin patch event in the area and were pretty hungry and cold. Inside, the place is very clean and almost seems like it was renovated recently. The waitress was very attentive and helpful. The drinks were great. We got a margarita flight so we could try the various flavors they had available. I was hungry and got both a chicken meal (similar to Chori Pollo) and street tacos that I shared with the table. Love this place. Been here a couple of times and food has been consistently delicious and well prepared-even the take out orders. Price for value is also respectable. They have Lunch specials and that Molcajate entree for two can definitely be shared by 3 or more people. Their Al Pastor taco is a fave of mine and the Margarita flights are a must each trip. My husband and I went about a week ago, we had Pedro for a server and he was great! The food was so delicious so we excitedly brought my brother in law back with us to try it. Unfortunately Pedro was not working tonight so the service was not as good. Our waitress was ok at the beginning of the meal but became very pushy once our food came. We then requested to split the bill between two cards (since my brother in law ate way less than my husband and I, we didn't want him to cover our share) the waitress charged the cards very incorrectly and said she could not fix it for us. The manager came over to help (or so we thought) but all he said was "sorry you're upset", it wasn't helpful at all. Looks like the transition from El Paso to Don Luis is finally taking place and while what we were told was going to happen sounds great, we have been there a few times in the recent weeks and the quality has seemed to get a tad bit worse than it was. I'm hoping its just a transition phase so we will see, but so far it everyone was underwhelmed by the change. I'll update my review if anything changes. Edit- tried again after grand opening. (New menu attached). Server (Carlos) was great, but food took an hour to show up and was just ok. Note- it wasn't too busy at all, so it was a bit confusing. Drinks took awhile as well and are tiny now compared to what we were used to but claim to have better ingredients like Jose Cuervo (not sure Jose is a quality tequila but no one couldn't really tell). Oh get this.....Chips and Salsa is now $3.99 (bottomless). Prices have seemed to go up while quantity and options are much less. Quality honestly seems to be the same. We must say we were very underwhelmed by the grand opening as it seems they have a lot of kinks to work out still. We are still missing El Paso. We will try again in a few months in hopes of improvement. I hate leaving reviews like but but had to share. We love this location and really want a Mexican spot to workout here, so hopes are high that they figure it out asap. We haven't been back since and head to Pueblos now instead. I tried to warn a couple coworkers about the negative Yelp reviews but was told in response "not to listen to the haters". Three of us visited for lunch on a Friday. There was a fair amount of surprise from them upon discovering the menu had changed significantly. Remember when you went on the Don Luis website and saw lunch specials? Try not to act surprised when they're nowhere to be found on the menu inside. If you're not paying 3.99 for chips and salsa and an extra .50 per salsa refill, it seems like they'll find another way to nickel and dime you. I ordered the Birria tacos, which, were passable. I think by that point I didn't really have high expectations (also I tried Taco Bell's attempt earlier that week so the bar to clear was underground). Not the fault of Don Luis specifically but what is it going to take to get wider consommé containers? Look at my picture, do you think I'm dipping the entire height of a taco into that small ramekin? Fortunately the one bright side of our experience was the service. Our server seemed to still be learning the ropes, but was patient and I think noticed the frustration from our party over menu changes and waived the chips and salsa order (I wouldn't count on that becoming the norm, though). Maybe one day things will change for the better. Until then, an overall a subpar experience. read more
