Don Rene Taqueria has a well-reviewed location in Milford, and recently, they opened in East Rock Market food hall in New Haven as well. I visited East Rock for the fantastic $2 taco Tuesday special. How fantastic? My brisket taco and carne asada taco are normally $4.50 apiece, and my pastor is normally $4. So more than 50% off fantastic. The meat could have been a bit warmer, but every other aspect of the tacos was very good. The meats were tender and juicy. The pastor had a unique seasoning vibe with familiar warm spices. It really hit home. The corn tortillas were substantial and good. The toppings varied a bit by taco, which I'm a big fan of. The carne and pastor tacos each had a traditional cilantro and red onion topping, but the pastor also had pineapple and the carne had a slight charred tomato sauce. The brisket had red cabbage and a tomatillo based salsa. Everything worked. Very good tacos. At $2, these tacos were a great value. If the serving size is the same at full price, I suspect, some people are going to note that the tacos cost more than they do for a similar serving size at some great spots. I don't know if this is always the same serving size by the way. And also, tacos are going to cost a bit more inside a nice sit down market like East Rock because expenses are higher than they would be for a successful food truck. Don Rene Taqueria is a great addition to East Rock Market. If you're not already eating at East Rock Market, you should be. They have very good pizza, sushi, tacos and coffee. And while I haven't tried the sandwich spot yet, it also has a great reputation. So it's an everybody gets a very good version of what they're in the mood for kind of place. There's a free parking lot that I almost always get into. And driving to East Rock Market is a snap, especially if you're coming from the north on 91 South like me. 4.5 Stars

Amazing place gather with a family acquaintances or friends amazing food and drinks.

God I love this place. I want to gatekeep it SO badly so it's never too busy for me to dine in, but…read moreI also want them to make a million dollars and stay open forever, so here we are. The tortillas are made from fresh masa pressed to order, which is amazing by itself, but on top of that, every taco I've had is nothing short of delightful. Every time I visit, my order has been increasing by one taco because I can't get enough. They are so kind and friendly, they remember my order and preferred toppings (or lackthereof, met with zero judgement!!), and the atmosphere is super comfortable. It is semi-loud, which I personally have no problem with, but I have seen stuffy older people come in and be turned off (bye, more tacos for me!). When I die, please bury me in a mound of Tacos Los Gordos carnitas!!!! TLG, you will see me weekly as long as I live in New Haven.

Minutes later, chaos ensued, and there was a line of about 20 people that never went away. They make the tortillas from scratch, I watched a woman in the kitchen, piecing off the dough and then flattening them in a press, and then putting them on the grill, over and over and over again. By the way, their tortilla chips are made of this same homemade goodness. I can see why there was a line out the door until I finished my meal. The tacos I ordered were perfectly seasoned, very tender, and incredibly juicy. I don't think I've ever had tacos like that before. Even if there is a line, I would highly recommend stopping in for these delicious morsels.

It was close to 11 PM on a Wednesday, and after trying multiple spots that claimed their kitchens were open until midnight (Google lied ), VivaZ came through. We were greeted right away and seated quickly. Our server was patient, knowledgeable, and very considerate of food preferences at the table -- huge plus there, especially that late at night. Food I ordered the chicken empanadas -- they were big, filled with chicken and cheese, tasty but a little too oily for my preference. I'd love a drier, crispier shell, but I'd still try them again. My brother ordered the shrimp nachos and those were excellent -- loaded, flavorful, and honestly better than the empanadas in my opinion. My cousin got the same nachos and loved them too. A friend ordered the short rib empanadillas and didn't enjoy them. He sent them back and swapped for chicken, which he liked much more. Appreciate that the staff had no issue making the change. Drinks I had an Ilegal Mezcal shot -- my go-to when I'm at a Mexican spot -- and it hit like it always does. My brother's strawberry margarita was also a winner. Overall Friendly service, good food, great energy even late on a weekday. The fact that they were open and accommodating when nothing else was is major. Would we return? Absolutely. Rating: 4.5/5
