Let's just say, I hope this was just a bad night at Don Ruben's. The food was just OK, but the service was HORRIBLE. Everything came to the table all at once. Chips and dip, plus an appetizer we ordered AND both our meals. All at the same time! We had a waiter that was not very attentive and forgot to bring the tortillas for the Fajita dish, even after being asked twice and didn't even apologize! By the time the tortillas arrived everything was cold. We boxed it all up and left. We also had a margarita that tasted like it had come out of a premix bottle, not freshly made. The taco salad with pulled pork was just OK. The pulled pork was kind of bland with very little taste to it. I had to add some hot sauce to give it some flavor. I'm giving a 5-star review mainly for the nice to-go service I experienced last weekend. I stopped by to pick up an order that I called in. After I waited for about 7 minutes, they brought me my food and told me not to worry about paying because they thought I was waiting "too long". Wow, it was honestly not very long at all, especially compared to waits I've experienced at other restaurants. I ordered a carne asada burrito and breakfast burrito, which I brought on a hike in Yosemite. I think it was good, but I don't really remember because of how hungry I was. We had great service here today. The chips and salsa have a unique but very enjoyful flavor. The Jamaica and horchata are exactly what you expect from a taqueria. I had the chili verde chimichanga and my boyfriend had the chiliqueles. Great size plates, good prices and easy to find. read more

We have eaten at this restaurant more than once and did not have any issues previously. Unfortunately, this time there was a cockroach on the table under the chip basket as we were eating. Don Ruben's was as authentic Mexican as my half "Amish" grandpa who drives a Tesla to and from the farm every day. No queso was the first red flag which was quickly followed up with extra for each chips and salsa you ate. My crunchy rice with bland beans went well with my greasy chicken nubs. We were looking for a place for dinner on our way out of Yosemite. It was about closing time but they accommodated us anyway. We were grateful since everywhere else in town was closed. Little did we know we would get amazing service and excellent food. My friend said this was the best menudo she has ever had anywhere. Highly recommend this place. Waitress was nice but 2 stars because the chicken enchiladas were good. The beans were watered down. And the the worst of the worst the shrimp cocktail. Literally came out warm. It was 6-7 pieces of big shrimp in hot water. No flavor. Nothing close to a shrimp cocktail. Please take it off the menu. I couldn't not even eat it. What a waste of money. My husband and I had gone to Yosemite for most of the day and were looking for a restaurant in Mariposa. We arrived and were immediately seated and given chips and salsa. Don Reubens is delicious, it's the best place we've found on the main road in Mariposa. I'd go to Don Reubens any day over others places around. So much delicious food for low prices. The wait staff was very fun, and the ambiance was on point with music and decorations. I ordered a dish with pork, so delicious, a friend ordered a chimichanga with pork bigger than your head for around $12. Received to meals from it. We first ate here years ago, not long after this place opened and it was very disappointing to say the least. I mean instant iced tea disappointing! None of us gave this place much chance of survival given that there was an established Mexican place in town, albeit with very mundane food. With the shutdown and the other Mexican place in town being closed, we reluctantly tried it again and found it had improved tremendously! In fact, our family thinks it's now the best Mexican place in town. Chips are disappointing as they look to have come right out of a bag, and the rice is pretty sad as well, but overall, the food and beans are quite good and they now have real brewed iced tea! Salsa is not fantastic either, but it's far, far better than the competition in town. We've been several times in the last couple of months and have ordered carnitas, chimichanga, crispy tacos, and the soft taco plate and have not been disappointed. Service has been great as well. This place has become our go-to restaurant in town and we'll likely continue to frequent Don Rubens. If they'd improve their chips and salsa, they'd get 5 stars. Nice thick freshly fried chips would be a HUGE improvement instead of their fresh-from-the-bag mass market chips. Even if their salsa remained the same, better chips would definitely push them over the top. read more

I'm a big fan of Mexican food and this place and the staff looked and felt authentic so I was intrigued. The intrigue, however, quickly dissipated when we got the food as it was literally the worst Mexican food I've had maybe ever. I would've thought that it isn't easy to mess up Mexican food but these guys did just that and then some. My enchiladas were tasteless, like literally all three (with different meats) were blah. My friend's chicken quesadillas were soggy, gross and tasted like fish for some reason -- inedible, and my other friend's steak was tough and tasteless. But the worst indictment on this restaurant was their poor excuse for guacamole. Now let me tell you about this "guacamole": first off, it was florescent green (picture radioactive cilantro) and inexplicably RUNNY! As in, you could pour it out like it was a dressing or something. Now, any self-respecting guacamole connoisseur will tell you first hand that guacamole is a thick paste and definitely NOT a liquid. It was as if they watered it down, which I could basically confirm when I tried this abomination. Oh, and it had zero tomatoes, onions or jalapenos, you know, some of the main ingredients of guacamole! The only way to remotely salvage it was to mix in the salsa dip that came with the chips, which was basically putting lipstick on a pig. This place had great potential and our waitress was nice but that's it. I don't know if it was because we were there right before closing or people around here don't know good Mexican food but I would highly NOT recommend this place. read more

Our experience here was mixed. They were quite busy on a holiday weekend. We'd driven from the park and were cold and tired and hungry. They seated us, and then forgot about us. Maybe 30 minutes went by, and we hadn't gotten water, chips, or anything. Other folks were getting seated and chips, so I think something went wrong and they literally just forgot about us.
