Showed up on a Friday night, it was my birthday and I really wanted a steak and potato dinner. Thankfully no reservation was needed but I could see it being more necessary for more popular seasons. Cute restaurant, like a old house transformed, really only smelled like an old house in the tiny narrow bathrooms Service was absolutely fantastic, everyone we interacted with was so lovely. They all seemed to know everyone who was dining there, we were for sure the out of towners. I had a filet with side salad and baked potato. The vegetable side was well seasoned and cooked well. Basic side dish but done so well I ate them all. The thought that went into making my baked potato ready to scoop out was a small thought but I appreciated it! Even my salad was cold, crispy and crunchy. The bread on the table was delicious. My stake was yummy and loved the jus and mushrooms served with them. We felt we could really relax and take our time instead of being rushed to order, eat, then leave. The atmosphere feels rustic, exposing the past. It was a time capsule for folks who enjoyed that era. FOOD: Sauteed Mushroom Soup: The soup arrived with garlic bread. The soup had an earthy, savoury and nutty texture. The rich, velvety mushrooms were bouncy and cooked well, while the umami-packed broth felt comforting. The garlic bread that accompanied the mushroom soup had a perfect balance of textures - heavily buttered, with savoury garlic flavour. The golden-brown, crispy exterior was not overly toasted and the sticks were enhanced with a touch of herbal flavour. (5 of 5) New Zealand Rack of Lamb: This was my order - cooked medium-rare. The perfectly cooked meat was tender - unfortunately lacked seasoning, but a dash of salt brought this to a perfect 5. (5 of 5) I had a choice of potatoes or rice pilaf and made a wrong decision. The rice pilaf looked like baby food, and the fresh red pepper over-powered the entire dish. I tried a small scoop and was disappointed. Needless to say, I couldn't eat another bite of the rice. (1 of 5) My vegetables were mostly cooked well. They had a bit of crunch and texture but not raw. My dinner came with Tomato Soup. The soup tasted nutty and lemony, with a slight heat - and has a good aftertaste. It was silky and smooth, rich, and velvety. (5 of 5) Scallone: Our other order came with onion soup. My dinner partner had the privilege of tasting one of the best scallone years ago and was hoping to bring back great memories of this special dish he loved. This marriage of blending ground abalone and scallops is a savoury dish formed into patties. It is then breaded and lightly pan-fried in butter. The texture is supposed to be tender yet firm. The temperature was perfect but the patty came out almost like a regular pancake. A chunk of fresh red pepper was also thrown in, perhaps for colour, but it overpowered the dish. The pilaf rice was also a no-no. When the server came and asked how we enjoyed the dishes, I had to be blunt and said, "I didn't like the rice". Our server apologized and immediately offered to remove the rice on both plates and asked if we'd like potatoes instead. My partner opted for the baked potato. (5 of 5) The onion soup that accompanied this order was also a fail. Overall, this dinner was a 2 of 5. We were there to celebrate my birthday, so for dessert, we got Coconut Crème Brulee. Even though it wasn't cooked evenly, the light flavour of the coconut did not take over the mild flavour of the crème brulee. We had 10 people and a sleeping baby to celebrate a birthday. They put us in the front of the restaurant near the street window in an alcove which gave us a reasonable level of privacy. One of us had lobster and it was slightly overcooked - but then we are in the mountains. The rest of us had steaks - ribeye, filets and prime rib. All were good. Service was attentive. There isn't a wide range of choices for dinner in Mariposa so this is good. The decor is dated, but it's comfortable and the service was great both times we went over our 3 day trip to Yosemite. Again, not a lot of choices in town. The selection was good and the portions were generous as well. Nothing blew me away but it didn't taste cookie cutter frozen first either. I wish I could have room to try the desserts but probably next time park situation. We came it and it seemed like it was really busy even though a good part of the tables were open. We were waiting for about 15 minutes before we were seated and the waiter took a good while to get to us. More people began to leave but for some reason it still seemed like they were so busy. It took over an hour for our food to get there and when it came it was pretty bland and boring. If the service had been better I would've given this place a better rating cuz the place is cozy and the vibe is good. read more

Best part is the friendly service, which we found particularly lacking during this visit to Mariposa. Everyone that helped us was welcoming and helpful. My husband and I came for dinner on a Saturday night and were able to her seated right away. We each ordered the specials, which comes with a soup or salad. I tried the french onion which had a rich broth and a nice gooey cheese on top. My husband got the clam chowder, side note, it has bacon in it. The food itself was good, especially after a long day of hiking in Yosemite. Charles Street Dinner House is simply amazing!! This has been a favorite spot since first stumbling in here in 1993. Although it's had a couple of ownership changes over the years, I have never been disappointed. I've had the pleasure of having dinner here several times recently, and once again, the food was absolutely delicious, and the staff was equally outstanding. Morgan was my server several times, and she was the best!! Dillon, the host, along with several other staff members were all on top of their game. Finally, had the chance to speak with Tom, the proprietor, who along with being my server, was very gracious and welcoming.The restaurant itself is very quaint and perfect for the surrounding area. I really enjoy this sort of oldtimey style steakhouse. I highly recommend reservations, it get busy as there's not to many restaurants in the area. Also you have a 15 minute window before they give someone waiting your table. We had the mushroom appetizer, was in a beef broth, broth is on the salty side but dipping my toasted bread in it was delicious. We ordered cocktails and they were strong. The paloma was surprisingly easy to drink and I'm not a grapefruit fan. Their menu stays the same, the prices change. They do have their specials written in the white board by the hostess. We ordered the specials prime ribs with a baked potato and the broccoli cheddar soup. Prime ribs was perfection, not to fatty but an enjoyable amount. The mushrooms in it were not the same as the appetizer ones. They had more of a white wine flavor & not salty. Baked potato was great. The broccoli cheddar soup was rich. Very thick and creamy not overtly cheesy flavored, better than most I've had for sure. I got the chicken Alfredo with a salad. Very creamy garlicky and cheesy. Very delightful. But a hostess sat us at a booth, and a waiter brought water, but then neither of them, nor anyone else, ever acknowledged or came back again. It's odd to say that the veggies were the highlight of my meal at a place that serves steaks but that just goes to show that Charles Street Dinner House does everything right. We were craving steak after a day of hiking and was able to get table as walk-ins. Got their prime rib dinner and new york steak, both medium rare as we asked. Their french onion soup was a comforting dish, lovely broth and great flavor. Sometimes every side at a steakhouse is covered in cream or cheese or butter of if it's seasonal vegetables, they have been cooked within an inch of their limpy lives. Not at Charles Street - sides were not an afterthought. The sauteed veggies were light, crisp and well seasoned, not overcooked at all. Baked potatoes were really fluffy and indulgent. Cute place, food was bland, below average. Walked in on a Wednesday evening just before 5, party of 2. The place is a little small, but I love an old historic building. The ambience and decor were charming. Took a while for them to take our drink order, but the servers were all very friendly. A little while after drinks came they took our food order. The place does get quite busy after 5:30, but we thought we'd be fine since we already ordered. My friend and I were having such great conversation that we didn't even realize it took about an hour and a half to get our food! A short time after that, they brought the bread to our table, 3 toasted breadsticks that were a little cold. I ordered the chicken Alfredo. Noodles were cold, parts of chicken were a bit rubbery, the random bits of vegetables they threw in were cold as well. I hardly ate any of it and the waitress assumed I'd want a box but I politely declined. My friend got the stuffed chicken which was absolutely delicious, but the side of potatoes were burnt, bland, and cold. Overall, it's a nice spot that goes with the "mountain feel" of the town, but I don't think I'd stop here again for $70+ on food that took too long and wasn't worth the wait. We stopped at the hideout saloon bar after and realized we should've just ate the food there . Lesson learned. read more

The atmosphere was nice. My wife called it a cute little restaurant. I ordered the fettuccine Alfredo with grilled chicken and feta cheese. Wife ordered a half rack of the baby back ribs. Both came with a starter house salad. We also ordered the onion rings appetizer. The onion ring left to be desired. They were sliced really thin and were really greasy, so much so that we had to wipe excess grease off our hands after each bite. Salads were good. Entrees were good although my wife felt the sauce on the ribs was too sweet. Servers were attentive and responsive to the point of giving the feel of team service. We would go back. read more

This was recommended to us as the local "fancy" restaurant, and we didn't make a reservation but were able to get a table on a weeknight with a few minutes wait. It's a small place; the interesting history of the building is on the wall outside. A local built it, then his wife and infant child died - how sad - and he sold it to a local doctor, and so on. The interior isn't fancy but it's comfy. The bathrooms are absurdly narrow, and worth a visit just for that. We tasted both of the Yosemite branded Merlot wines, but neither was great - but thanks for the tasting! Ended up having beers. I had onion soup, which was okay, and a rib eye steak that was well prepared with really good grilled mushrooms on top. My sister and niece enjoyed their dinners too. We are giving a one star review JUST for the fact that the servers here are either really really bad or racist, either way we left hungry, upset and completely disappointed in this town. This is our first time and we were excited to be here for the night, but even tho the host was nice when we came in, after we got sat, the server who was RIGHT next to us never said a word nor even looked our way at all. I understand she had a big party, maybe she wasn't even our server , but after ten minutes of being ignored, the host brought waters and told us once again our server would be with us soon. We waited another ten minutes and after the server walked by for the SEVENTH time with food, she proceeded to tell the table right behind us that she would be right there....so basically she really could have done the same to us but maybe we were too brown! I am not asking for much but at least letting us know she would get someone would have been kind. I told the host on the way out and he said it was a busy night and that he STILL didn't know who our server was, as if that was a good reason to be ignored by every personnel passing by us. I didn't see any name tags but this was tonight 6/23 at 8pm and the rudest employee/server was a big lady with a long black dress, in case a manager actually cares for customer feedback! read more

This was first experience to this place. The inside was nice and cozy had a hometown feel. The bathrooms were small careful if your claustrophobic. The service was good and the food was great. I tried the special pasta of the day that came with a delicious French onion soup, and I have really nothing to add other than saying it was amazing. And we tried the cheesecake for desert which I'm glad I did not skip. But food aside, people were so nice and service was truly amazing. The wife and I spent the week visiting Yosemite, we stayed in Midpines and just happened to see Charles Street Dinner House on our way back to the VRBO. What a great surprise. She had the stuffed pork loin, I had the Prime Rib. Both were great. The staff were polite, accommodating and very attentive. The prime rib was thick cut 14 ounces, not a thin slice and the temp was perfect. I ordered a beer on tap, came in a frozen goblet.... Coldest beer I had all day. We will definitely go back next time we are in Mariposa!!! read more

I would have put less stars for the food but the amazing service was 10 stars! We had a party of 15! And they were able to accommodate us. The place is fairly small, and it was extremely packed. So I'm assuming they weren't turning anyone down or making anyone wait longer (COVID). We had a nice little spot in the corner so we had our own space. The food was polarizing. Mostly everyone that got steak had some complaints. Assuming they might have crowded the grill or something so the steak wasn't cooked evenly or the outside wasn't grilled enough. Their clam pasta dish tasted like the wine wasn't cooked off all the way. On the other hand, some people loved their food - esp the grilled swordfish and ravioli. I think the restaurant would benefit from a little bit of updating. The place felt a bit dingy and the decorations are pretty outdated. All in all... I'd check out a brewery first when I'm back in Mariposa before coming back here. read more

You get a soup or salad, bread, and a starch with your entree. We were super full but took our leftovers home and they were great the next day!
