I really enjoyed my arepa from here! Saw this place as I was walking by and knew I had to check it out. I got the pelua arepa to go with spicy beef and cheese, they also included some sauces on the side which was nice so it didn't get soggy on the way back. The arepa was very tasty, I got mine fried and it felt like it was made fresh. The meat was a little tough to chew through at times but still tasty, and I did like the cheeses. It tasted yummy. This might be my new favorite place to grab food in JP! Every time I go, I can't resist ordering a cachapa with pork and cheese. It might take a little while to come out, but it's worth the wait. I love to get a side of sweet plantains, too. I always sit down to eat, since the cachapa takeout comes in a single-use styrofoam container, which I'm not a fan of for environmental reasons. We spent a long day at Angell where our dog was getting a CT scan and minor surgery. In the morning we checked out the area for walking-distance lunch spots and were very happy with our choice of Don Tequeño y Doña Arepa. Our picks were: 1. Chicken & Cheese (Pollo Mechado Y Queso) Cachapa 2. La Llanera Arepa 3. Rib steak soup All these were excellent and I would get all again. Service was friendly and helpful. We ordered online, but the soup I wanted to try initially (Piscandina) wasn't available that day and they called me to let me know and suggest an alternative (with which I was very happy!). Pick up was easy and well packaged to carry back to eat it at Angell. The restaurant seating and decor, however, looked comfortable, fun, and very clean and I would definitely consider eating in if the situation allows. read more

Food is great, and pretty inexpensive for the portion size. The cachapa was sweet and satisfying. The sauces the provide are quite addictive, particularly on the arepas. Service can be super slow or speedy, depending on the time and rush. It's inconsistent, so plan on being there a while. It's quite calm inside, interestingly, and they play music videos on the TV as background audio. Definitely worth visiting and trying some stuff. read more

When I saw patacones on the menu my heart leapt with joy. A Venezuelan delight and rarely found. It is a dance in your mouth with interplay between savory and sweet. A choice of sweet or savory plantain base and layered with goodness of beans, avocado, greens, and cheese. Fun addition of matchstick chips. The parties at Don Tequeño y Doña Arepa, Jamaica Plain, are incredible. I always order the Dominó Empanada, the Viuda Cachapa, the Yucca Croquette and the Guava and Cheese Tequeño. In Costa Rica, we have something similar to the Cachapa, a little sweeter and prepared with young corn. I was delighted to enjoy the flavors that reminded me of the traditional dish that I appreciate. Every time, including when I have experienced issues with the deliver partner, [DoorDash], the parties of the business, especially, Juan have been incredibly regardful, proper and kind. The time that I visited, I felt preoccupied as I have wanted to have the entire bottle of the Guasacaca Sauce to accompany the empanada. They noticed that I enjoyed the sauce and did not make me feel bad about it at all. I absolutely recommend the business for a delicious experience of the Venezuelan and Dominican cuisine. Ordered the Bomba and it was a GREAT decision. It's one of two club sandwiches on the menu and comes with shredded chicken, ham, cheese, fried egg, bacon, and dressed to perfection. The flavorful sensations this sandwich conjures up are difficult to comprehend. It's a personal "Sandwich Top 10" for me. Highly recommend! We had such a wonderful Sunday late lunch/early dinner here. My son decided he wanted to try Venezuelan food nearby and they had great reviews. We were greeted and seated quickly, even though the place was busy. Our tequenos (cheese + cheese & guava) and yucca croquette appetizers were served hot and fast. The homemade sauces with the yucca were a hit. My son loved his catira arepa, my husband wolfed down his beef empanadas trying out those amazing sauces again. The vegetariano patacon with fried egg, avocado, and sweet plantains (& plenty of hot sauce) were an epiphany and something I'll be coming back for soon. Well, I had been warned not to eat at this place -- but I love arepas, so I decided to take a chance. Boy oh boy, do I regret it. I ordered two arepas pabellón this past Saturday night and took them home. A few hours later, I found out the hard way that diarrhea apparently comes included with the meal! I used to love this restaurant, but they are extremely unprofessional. I ordered a vegan empanada due to dietary restrictions, and they gave me cheese. This happened multiple times. I'm so happy there is finally a restaurant here! They've kept the layout and tables from Cafe Aromi and it has the same charm, but now with excellent Venezuelan food. Bring your reading glasses, you're not seeing the menu without them. There is SO much available at this little food joint. Take out is fast and easy, but dine in is best. The food is hot and tasty, plus you can enjoy the joyful noise of happy JPers finally eating a reasonably priced lunch in Hyde Square. And yes, the prices are VERY reasonable. I love the fresh squeezed lemonade and cheese and guava pequeño. Staff are friendly and the food comes to your table quickly. Don't miss the sauces near the counter, your food tastes that much better! There is an all gender handicap restroom and no steps into the restaurant either, so a great place if you're in a wheelchair or have a stroller. Just all around good food and good vibes. read more

It was disappointing to be honest. Got an arepa and it was super soggy even though I ate it in and it was just served. It was super unhealthy the cheese was just some bag grocery cheese and the sauces were not interesting at all. The service was pretty blah. It did come out pretty quick though which is nice but it's hard to see this working out. I'll just go next door to Whole Foods to eat something much healthier than a $11 arepa after tax and tip. I had really high hopes for this place and was excited to go last night but ended up mostly disappointed. I should have known how the experience was going to be as soon as it started. The cashier spent 10 minutes talking and laughing with the women in front of me (who were there talking before I even entered). The line grew behind me as they were talking. After the 10 minutes he finally took my order for an arepa, an empanada, and tostones. Note - this is just 3 items to go. I waited 30 minutes for those 3 items. The guy who served me actually left and came back super chill like the line/orders didn't grow at all. My boyfriend was waiting for me so I eventually went up to ask what was going on to another server - she said she would go ask in the back but never came back. I then went to another server, not the one who took my order, and he said "I told you it would take 45 minutes" to which I said "you didn't serve me so I wasn't the one you told that to and the other guy didn't say this to me". Eventually I was so hungry that I went to my original server and asked for a refund. He told me the steps and tostones were ready but not the empanada. So, I asked for a refund for the empanada, but the cashier had to call his boss, who wasn't even there, to process it. I was frustrated and hungry, so I left without the empanada or refund. The arepa was mid, and the tostones were too salty--not worth the 40+ minute wait. The service was terrible, and the staff seemed to ignore the growing number of orders. I can't stop coming back! Delicious authentic well priced! As a Colombian I'm overjoyed to find a spot that actually sells good arepas. The sauces are a perfect addition. Have tried multiple different arepas here they're all great awesome service as well. Food comes quickly.
