I was looking for something nutritional and not too heavy. I came across this Dominican Republic spot on Google, it had high reviews. I tried to Uber here but the location wasn't appearing so I gave them a call and confirmed they are open. I actually took the subway and it was super easy as it is near a stop. Spicy Shrimp Bowl 5/5 - the fish was really soft and seasoned just right. The black rice is phenomenal, I could eat it on my own. Horchata 5/5 - exactly how I like it, heavier on the cinnamon side, also the horchata helped with cooling down my tongue after pouring too much ghost pepper on my bowl Dropping a star because the service isn't that great, when our food was ready, the staff member just muttered our food was ready...also seems like the utensils are in a spot only for staff to grab but it's actually self serve. I got 3 birria tacos as they were highly recommended. The ordering process was smooth and overall atmosphere was cozy. Lots of college kids just grabbing a bite to eat with their friends or middle aged passerby's. The food itself was amazing, the tacos were extremely filling because of the packed ingredients. The broth on the side was flavorful (not oily as I often see in bad birria plates) and the amount of limes were satisfactory. Overall, a really chill experience with minimal concerns. read more

I recently moved here from LA and was craving some street tacos and wanted to try this place because it looked promising. In terms of food, we ordered the 4 al pastor (pork), 4 steak tacos and 1 elote. Although the food smelled great and the presentation was great, the al pastor lacked taste and was on the salty side. For the steak tacos, they were extremely bland and dry. For the elote it was the best for all the things we ordered; although they weren't using sweet corn. In terms of service, it was absolutely unacceptable. When I asked for a cup of water, I was told they only offered bottle water so I ended up buying a Pineapple Jarrito. Later when more people came into the restaurant, I noticed they were served cups of water. Wouldn't recommend to this place if you are craving tacos because you will be disappointed read more

Tried La Fonda for lunch for the first time. The Birria Tacos were decent, good portion of Birria with 3 tacos in the order. The accompanying soup was good. Also ordered the tacos Al pastor which was ok. The biggest complaint was the tortilla. It was too thin and easily broke apart. A street taco generally has two tortilla shells. Maybe will go back but would try something else on the menu to give it another chance. read more

This is a quintessential "cheap eat". You order at the counter and pick up at the counter. There are some unusual drink choices in the refrigerator, and when was the last time you drank Coca Cola from a bottle? There are simple but comfortable chairs and tables with not too loud Spanish background music. The tall windows look out to the Commonwealth avenue carriage road, and Frida Kahlo looks down at you while you eat. The friendly chef gave us a sample of chicken to taste; he cleaned the tables and arranged the chairs while we decided what to order. We each chose a Dominican bowl with extra vegetables, and it was filling and more than enough for us. The fried plantains were a little bit oily. The flavors are unusual. A steady stream of customers arrived to pick up orders, and some ate in. Good inexpensive eat out establishments are becoming more difficult to find, and this place fits the bill. Next time, we will try the burritos and tacos. read more

Taco Tuesday for the win! Went last night, and had a great time overall - we tried every taco on them menu plus the guac. Our favorite was the birria, even though they weren't on the $2 menu. The food here is delicious, and the employees were very nice about accommodating a last-minute change to our order. I love churros no matter what, but theirs were especially delicious. The bowls -- including the fajita bowl and the Dominican bowl -- are my favorite thing to get here. Also, as someone with a dairy allergy, I'm very happy to say that they did a great job with accommodating my requests to leave items off of my food. They allow you to request modifications in online orders, and were able to give me a nondairy version of a few different dishes. read more

The menu is stacked with Dominican, Mexican, and other Latin American favorites such as the birria tacos, elote corn, and al pastor meats to name a few classics. Fairly inexpensive and has wonderfully flavored and portioned meals. The flavors of the dishes make this quaint location make it seem as if it could be coming directly from Mexico. We live just down the block from La Fonda and have seen two other Mexican places come in and out of that lot. This one seems to be the best by far! We've had the Dominican bowl, pork bowl, pork burrito, and the birria tacos. The birria tacos were especially fantastic, as were the fried plantains in the Dominican bowl.
