My first time with 'Don The Car Care Man' at the University Ave was during the time while I buying my current car. While all other places either quoted me higher prices or were super busy for a car inspection, Don's price was reasonable as well as was flexible with timings. They gave a detailed report on the car and told me that the serpentine belt ($170) is wearing off and needs to be replaced soon. With this, I was able to bargain a better price before buying my current car. In fact, the serpentine belt broke less than two months of me buying the car as they predicted. I have been getting my oil change here every 3-4 months ever since. Mine is a 11 year old car with 220 k miles, so there are new issues that regularly pops up. They give me estimates for all the repairs, they also tell me which one is necessary for me to drive and which is not (like my car's rattling noise at times which I'm fine with). They also call me if they find new issues while they are working and ask for my decision before moving further. I'm grateful to them for always being honest and kind to me. I strongly recommend the place on the University Ave especially if you work close to the campus. I usually call them to see if I can drop my car off in the morning before going to work at UW and I pick my car back around 5 pm when I head back home. For the second time in a row there was a "billing error" that required me to challenge their charges. This time they charged my wife $71 to install a new headlight bulb that she brought in. When I called back and challenged they said there was an "error" and they didn't know why she was charged an extra $20. (I'll bet I know why...) Calls to other shops ranged around $20 for install to free if she bought the bulb at the dealer ($15ish). When Don owned it, it was a reputable shop, not any more. read more

We we're on our way home from Milwaukee and are Muffler began making very loud noises I Googled Don's Auto Car Care and called them and they said bring it right in for a free estimate. Within 10 minutes of being there it was up on the Hoist and within another 30 minutes we were out the door. It was a quick fix, and he said he could do could do the job yet today. Total cost plus tax $142 the Toyota dealer told us it would be at least $419 and up to $ 2000 possibly. I can't think Don's Car Care enough for getting us back on the road quietly and inexpensively. I've taken both my cars here and been happy with the work and customer service. I had an older car and they did economic patch work to get me by until I could afford more. When I was quoted $900 for breaks at Smart, Dons charged half that. They also called the warranty company and got the repair covered after Smart wouldn't even look at my policy. read more

This is by far the best place I have ever brought my car to. I have been bringing my car here for a couple years and have never had a better experience with an auto repair shop. They have my car in and out in one day, are all incredibly kind and never overcharge. They are extremely trustworthy- they always call before any service to quote the cost and explain the necessity and they always stick to that cost!!! You can stop in any day to get an oil change and it will be finished by the end of the day or early the next morning. They are also open early so anyone can stop in before work! I'll be quick to the point here: crap. I asked the person up front if they take appointments or walk ins for an oil change (a 15 minute job) and he just said they don't. Confused by his response, I asked if they do oil changes he said "just drop offs." I asked how to get one and he responded you have to drop your car off. Expecting an elaboration I said okay? He then continued and said "we take the people to work if they drop it off. But it's usually only people who work at the school or hospital. The cars we have here have more problems than an oil change." never bothered to ask if I work around here just wanted to get me out of there. Crappy customer service. If he engaged potential customers with respect he would have future loyal customers. read more

Convenience vs price--in this case, I feel like the convenience was outweighed by price. I expected higher prices due to the near campus location, but in hindsight I wish I had taken my car to a shop farther away from campus where I know at least one of the repairs is less expensive. Also, they did replace my cabin air filter without asking me--when I picked up the car, the employee said "Your cabin filter was really dirty so we replaced it, I hope you don't mind." It is true that the filter was dirty and I was planning to change the filter, but I didn't appreciate that the shop didn't ask permission. I'm satisfied with the work but I don't think I'll return. read more

I have become tired of the high dealership repair costs for my admittedly old Mercedes, so had Don's do some suspension work, which they did for about half the cost of my dealer. They did make an error in tightening my wheels when done. I called Don who was very apologetic. He then send me a refund check and second sorry note in the mail. I think many places can work on your car, but when something goes wrong and it is immediately handled in a customer appreciative manner, it is worth mentioning. My car has had a lot of issues with the alternator and battery, and after several years of occasionally getting the alternator replaced (expensive!), the guys at Don the Car Care Man finally told me that the real problem had been with my Engine Control Unit all along. They suggested that it might not be worth the money to get the ECU fixed, and that it might be time to find a new car instead. I really appreciate that they were up front about that instead of just trying to milk the situation for more money. After asking a ton of questions and posing hypothetical scenarios, all of which they addressed easily, honestly, and gladly, I did end up getting my alternator replaced one last time (as well as getting new spark plugs). I was also very appreciative that they respected my decision to do that. Finally, since I happen to work at a job that has the same exact hours as those at Don the Car Care Man, I was never able to come in while they were open. I was able to do all my business with them over the phone on my breaks! These guys did so much for me, and I've never even met them in person. Honestly, 10/10 for going above and beyond with actually fixing my car, amazing customer service, and just being great people. read more

Don provided a sense of security and comfort with his many chairs, fresh pots, and extensive periodical selection. He was friendly and informative during our quick and easy oil change. Located next to Octopus Car Wash the locale is prime paralleled only by Don's friendly banter, soft eyes, warm aura, etc. Don has become my spiritual guru as I travel across this fair land. Worst kind of shop I've ever come across. I had my car towed there after a long weekend because it won't start. They did not look at the car for 48 hours claiming that they were too busy (it was too cold out so many breakdowns were expected, but not enough that they can't check my car for 2 full days!). This, despite my car was towed there around 9:30 am, and the fact that I had called them ahead to make sure they can look at it. After two days, they called to say that spark plugs need replacement, and there is a possibility of timing belt and/or engine failure. So they suggested that pressure check could be done before determining if it was worth doing more spending to fix the car (... i wasn't going to be able to spend money on a new car right away). In the end after 3 and 3/4 days later he says that he can't fix and he will gladly tow my car to other place. To sum up my case for giving this dood a bad review are his own words giving me reasons of not telling me sooner that he cant fix the car, "..but we don't want to do that kind of work". This was very frustrating after spending a cold week without the only and dealing with few doctor's appointments. Needless to say other shop, fixed my car within a day. Never go this guy's place. Either he's a bad mechanic or a bad dude, but I doubt he's both, and either way it's probably a bad deal for you. read more

I took my car there for some exhaust work. It's classic car so they had to order a part. Kept my car inside the whole time. As soon as the part arrived, the repair was made quickly and I got a call. Very friendly. Showed me the old parts and explained what had to be done. This is my go-to spot for auto repairs! read more
