I recently discovered Dos Tonos Restaurant on Yelp while searching for the best nachos in the East Los Angeles area. It's definitely a hole-in-the-wall spot. The inside is cute and made me feel like I was in a village in Mexico. They offer all the traditional Mexican dishes: tacos dorados, burritos, enchiladas, chilaquiles, and nachos. I ordered the nachos rancheros to go, which came with carne asada, beans, cheese, pico de gallo, sour cream, and guacamole. The tortilla chips were homemade and stayed crispy, which was a big plus. The carne asada came in big pieces, well-seasoned and tasty, though I wish it had a bit more char. I also liked that they went light on the beans. They were just lightly smeared on the chips, which I prefer since too many beans can overpower the nachos. I tried both their green and red salsas. The green was mild, the red had some heat, and both were good. Customer service was solid. The person who helped me was polite and friendly. read more

Yelpers brought me to this place and I gotta say, it was a hit! I ordered the chilaquiles and was not disappointed. You know they're going to be good when the owner says "they're spicy" not "how spicy would you like them". They came out with just the right amount of rice, beans, and a little container of sour cream to help curb the heat. Little piece of heaven! Found this cute little spot in LA a couple weeks ago and it is very clean and had exceptional customer service. Food was OMG, to die for, it was so good! Reasonable prices. I had the green chilaquiles with scrambled eggs, rice beans, it was perfection. The salsa was so delicious and spicy. Ive had green chilaquiles at other places and they are usually acidly because of the tomatillo, but THESE WERE SO DELICIOUS , loved it. I recently found this restaurant on Yelp while looking for a place to have lunch on the way to a game at the Rose bowl. Parking is all street parking and you will probably have to walk a little ways but nothing too crazy. The restaurant itself is on the smaller side with a few tables, maybe 4-5. We ordered at the counter and sat down. I ordered an enchilada plate and an orange-pineapple agua Fresca and my bf got the spicy enchilada plate. The food came out pretty quickly and everything was delicious! The enchiladas came with fluffy rice and tasty beans. The agua fresca was not too sweet and very refreshing. We live right up the street from this place. When I went a few years ago, it felt pretty run down, but my partner and I are trying to visit more, and it is SO nice in there. Bright, colorful, and service is friendly and warm. Food is amazing. Chill vibes. Partner loves the potato tacos, and their Spanish rice is some of the best I've had. We walked here, but there is parking in the residential streets around. I have not figured out what the bathroom situation is, because there is no visible bathroom, but I figure they will let you in the back if you need. Haven't tried yet. read more

My handyman brought me lunch from this local place today. Take lessons boys on proper etiquette. I had never heard of this place so I thanked him and told him whatever he was having was fine with me. The chicken definitely had a kick; however, the Mexican rice was just average. The salad was a mix of iceberg lettuce, pico de gallo and queso fresco. The show stopper was this green sauce! I have no idea what type of a sauce it is but it pairs well with the chicken. Since my maternal grandmother died I've tried to recreate her miraculous dishes without success. I've also visited many Mexican restaurants up and down California, searching for food which even approximates her cooking. It's always close, but no cigar. But I've finally found a place who makes Mexican food (specifically the cuisine of Guanajuato) that is every bit as good as my abuela's. All the dishes seem familiar: tacos, enchiladas, taquitos etc - but everything I've tried there has the depth of flavor, the simple presentation, and obviously the love my grandma used to put into all of her food. I mean, I nearly cried today as I ate their taco dorado filled with carne de res desmechada - taste memory flooded my mouth. It was exactly like the ones grandma made. All the food is clean and freshly made. Simple sopa de arroz and frijoles are wonderful - I wish I could make rice like that! They offer about 4 or 5 different sauces on their enchiladas, and very kindly advise customers about the heat levels in their salsas. The place is small, the parking sometimes difficult (street only), but the owners/staff are really nice, helpful and kind. It's a lovely place. And the dishes are all little miracles - I mean, who makes enchiladas and tacos with perfectly cooked chicken breast any more?
