I can honestly say that if it wasn't for Cumulus Sweet Deals, we would have never gone to Donatello's With A Twist in Oakdale, CT. It is an unassuming building on the side of the road, in the middle of a neighborhood. It is about 10 minutes south of Mohegan Sun. Donatello's With A Twist definitely offers a twist! They serve a wide variety of options: American breakfast, sandwiches & burgers, Puerto Rican dishes & Italian fare. Hubby enjoyed playing the free Pac-Man video game as we waited for our food. There are a couple of seats inside & a little garden outside. Most people took their food to go. There are 7 - YAAASSSSS SEVEN! - mofongo options on the menu. Ummm... yes, please! For the uninitiated, mofongo is a dish from Puerto Rico featuring plantains as its main ingredient. They are picked green, cut into pieces & typically fried, then pounded in a wooden pilón (mortar and pestle) with a variety of spices, broth & some type of cooking oil . If you are a fan of Guy Fieri's Diners, Drive-Ins & Dives, you know that he is a mofongo freak. I've had mofongo before & definitely enjoy it, hubby was new to the experience. We selected the Shrimp Creole Mofongo & it was spectacular. We heard the pounding of the plantains in the back as we waited for our food so I knew it was being made special for us. The mound of mofongo was flavorful, the shrimp were large & perfectly cooked in a spicy red sauce with a little salad on the side to cool things off. We also ordered the Chicharron De Pollo with Tostones. I thought it was going to be a harder fry on the chicken but the dark meat was yummi. The tostones were perfectly fried & the highlight of this dish. Hubby can't pass up a steak sandwich so he ordered a large Boricua Steak Bomb. HOLY COW! The sandwich was ginormous!!! A ton of steak with a good amount of melty cheese topped with a spicy sauce. Hubby loved it! I saw a guy order a slab of meat & I went up afterwards to inquire what it was. A perfectly fried chicharrón - fried pork belly. It was a good combination of meat, fat & crunchy bits. As a German, I was introduced to grilled schweinebauch as a kid. It is not everyone's cup of tea because of the fat content & idea of eating pig's stomach but I love it. I should have bought another one to take with me for later! Donatello's makes a number of fresh juices & we ordered the passionfruit which was a refreshingly sweet & sour combo. They also sell desserts but we were so full that I didn't even look to see what was offered. If you are in the area, I would recommend stopping by Donatello's With A Twist to try some of their special dishes. It is a celebration of flavor & culture! read more

The food was tasty, and the menu is varied. I always get a little nervous when a restaurant offers too many different types of cuisine, but this place does all of it right. We got Italian dishes, Puerto Rican dishes, and some classic greasy American, and it was all tasty and well portioned for the price. I'm only giving it three stars though because a couple of us had pretty rumbly bathroom trips after dinner... The server at the counter was totally ignorant about what was on the menu, one of us ordered Carne Fritas off the Puerto Rican menu and she asked us if it was a soup, then had to confirm with her manager whether we were asking her for soup. Not sure what that was about, maybe she's brand new? I'd go again, the food was tasty. read more

Ok so from the look of it outside you would normally drive by this place but it will surprise you. Fast and friendly service. The food is very different then your average order out restaurant. The yucca fries are tasty and cooked well. The Cuban sandwich I had was one of the best I had second only to a high end Cuban restaurant. I highly recommend this place. read more

This place is fantastic! My absolute go to when I don't feel like cooking. There's limited space inside for dining, but honestly I always do take out. There is outdoor seating with a nice view of a river below for when it's nice out. My favorites so far: Jersey Bills Grinder- they really pack the meat into this sub and it's very tasty. Love the bread! Chicken Stew on yellow rice- I pretty much have this every week. The chicken thighs are tender. The flavor is tasty. And it's available every week on the hot bar so it's a quick grab if I'm running late. Empanadas- they have several types and some specials from time to time. Again, they don't skimp on the filling for these things. Keep an eye out for their daily specials on Facebook. They're always changing and delicious. read more

Ordered the Chicken Chunk Mofongo and the gentleman working at the desk was looking at me very confused as if that wasn't on their menu. Also got a side of rice. They didn't offer any specials to me nor to go over them and I was a first time patron but I noticed the guests after me were offered samples along with notice of specials. Overall the staff was "friendly", I sneezed and one of the workers blessed me but no hello upon entry. My meal was unfortunately not as described, they gave regular Mofongo with Chicarrones de Pollo on the side. The rice & chicken were hot & tasty. The Mofongo was unfortunately lack luster and I wouldn't recommend. Based off other reviews may try again but wasn't very impressed. read more

One of the best places in all of CT. This hidden gem in montville is incredible it's right down the road from exit 6 off of 395! The food is a cozy home comfort food with a twist as he says. The empanadas are fresh and made to order (there's also ones already to go for those who stop on a lunch break) inside the decorations are awesome and just enough seating for the size of the place. My favorite thing tho are his jerk wings. They are just enough heat to have some flare but still let you taste the juice and meat of the chicken. And for service everyone is kind and generous. There was an argument concerning my order. I ordered pulled pork and a porcetta. When I came in to pick it up the woman behind the counter asked the guys cooking where the porcetta was and they just shrugged. They said that wasn't on the menu. My kids and I went in for the first time tonight. I had heard great things and I was not disappointed. Kids got standard American fare (meatball anch chicken bacon ranch grinders w fries) and both said theirs was SOOO good. I went with the Puerto Rican menu. Absolutely fantastic. I cannot put into words how amazing it was. The service also stellar. The owner and both workers I encountered were helpful and just so happy to introduce me to Puerto Rican food. They let me sample a whole plate of stews, meats, and plantains. They brought me a potato ball just to try it. It was unreal! I'm now addicted. The steak and cheese empanada was the BEST empanada I have ever had. I decided on pepper steak, chicken stew, rice and beans and a side of Mac and cheese. That was a bummer since it was a great place for Bar-B-Q. Donatello's has great sandwiches, salads and soups. The prices are super low for the quality and quantity. My wife and I split their signature sandwich named the Donatello. It was STUFFED with salami, cappicola, prosciutto, mozzarella, prov, pesto, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, and banana peppers. Of course when I got the gift card I couldn't help myself and needed to to try some food! I had the Donatello grinder, fried plantains and chicken wings. The grinder was delicious and had a lot more meat than I was expecting! The tostones were just as expected, and the wings were delicious - crispy and made fresh to order! While it's kind of out of the way for me to get to, I certainly wouldn't hesitate coming back here. Delicious housemade food made and served by friendly people. We went back the day after our first visit; it was so good. The brisket was a special and so tender, the mofongo was amazing. So delicious. The bread comes from New York. The grinders are stuffed full of quality ingredients. We went in and had lunch. After enjoying are grinders in the outside seating area we decided to pick up something for dinner. We chose a spaghetti and meatball dinner to go.
