All take out, I stopped at Bennedito's with a craving for a meatball sub. And they were out of meatballs at 12:10 on a Friday. Bummer. I downshifted to a sausage sub and it took about ten minutes to be prepared and wrapped in foil. Of course, I took it to go. The sub was very good though big sausages with marinara sauce and cheese are notoriously easy to wear. I did pretty well and only ended up with one blop of sauce on my shoes (!) and none on my shirt. Tasty and flavorful with a nicely toasted bun and plenty of cheese. Rather than eat in the van, I found a great spot at Fort Trumbull State Park not too far away. Awful experience. Don't go. Stood there and was ignored. Then someone finally looked up from the kitchen and we said hi..nothing , then we said can we have an eggplant sandwich and she said no we don't have that (its clearly listed on the menu board). So we asked what do you have and she nastily said whatever is up on the board...the man by the register still never even looked at us. We left. The place had a really negative vibe and was old and dingy. Do NOT waste your time. Had to give a star on this to post but it wasn't deserving of even one star ! read more

THE GRINDERS HERE ARE FANTASTIC. FULL STOP!!!! Ignore the naysayers. This is a very small simple Italian grinder shop. It's likely that this shop used to be more robust & offer Italian groceries & subs back in the day: more like a real Italian Deli. But now it's pretty bare bones but that's okay bc it's still EXCELLENT. They just have scaled back tremendously to focus on a dozen or so different grinders. THEY USE AWESOME AUTHENTIC ITALIAN BREAD for their grinders. And their Italian oil they drizzle on some of their subs is DELISH & TOP QUALITY. I had a turkey grinder with LTO, sweet & hot peppers & drizzle of olive oil & freshly cracked pepper. The SMALL SUBS are 9 INCHES & are ~$10- The LARGE SUBS ARE 12 INCHES ~$12-. They sell a few flavors of small sized Community potato chips, potato salad, Cole slaw, macaroni salad $2.50 & 3-4 types of cold canned soda. Thats it. The staff were very nice, kind, & courteous. There's only 1 or 2 older gentlemen working in the shop & there's a steady stream of customers. I definitely recommend calling ahead 15+ mins to order if you are in a hurry. Not only are the prices VERY reasonable but the amount of meat and veggies you get in your grinder are quite generous. The only one thing I would suggest when purchasing a grinder here is to ask for a little less onion (and other veggies you want less of), but besides that...I am giving this place 5 stars! Bennedito's is located on a residential street & if u blink, u just might miss it. There are no tables or chairs or any place to dine-in. This is strictly a take-out only establishment. But it's so worth it! There are two guys who work in the kitchen making all grinders to order. I ordered the following: -Italian Combo Italian Combo - $6.50 (Small). (4 stars). What I love about this grinder is the fresh & crunchy bread along with the high quality deli meats that are used. The Italian Combo comes with Capicola, Salami, & Ham. The "Capi" was cured beautifully & had such a deep porky flavor which was finger-licking good! The salami was peppery & garlicky. Very intense flavors that shined through. The Ham was tender & tasty but in all honesty was lost when matched with the other two Italian "heavy-hitters" above. The lettuce was fresh & crisp! I probably should have asked them to melt my cheese as the coldness of the cheese was a bit underwhelming. However, I would go back to Bennedito's the next time I have a wicked bad craving for a tasty grinder. The grinders are approximately 10" in length for the SMALL & packed with fresh ingredients. If we had this same shop in Hawaii I guarantee u it would cost double! --- All in all, I'm glad we came here. It is about a 5 minute drive from base so it's convenient & relatively quick to get a tasty meal. My friend ordered the Meatball grinder & we both really enjoyed it. Unfortunately, we didn't get to eat it until we were back at work so I couldn't take a photo of it. However, the next time I go back I'll definitely get a HOT grinder. Lessons I've learned from visiting Bennedito's: 1. Don't talk about the Yankees(unless it's to bash them) 2. Don't talk about football(unless you worship the Pats) 3. Don't mention Richoni's across the street, which also serves grinders(Richoni's is the Lex Luther of grinder shops on Poquonnock Rd. apparently) 4. Get there early if you can and be prepared to order something other than what you came in for (he occasionally runs out of bread toward the end of the day and will run out of certain meats/cheeses until he gets his weekly delivery...at least you know it's fresh!) 5. Know that ANYTHING you order will be absolutely freakin' DELICIOUS! What appears on the outside to be an abandoned little corner shop from the 50s turns into your Creepy-Uncle's-Basement-Apartment-Hell on the inside. How is this place legally a business? It literally feels like some guy decided to take over a condemned building and set up a cooler and a deli slicer and say "F- it, I'm opening a Sub shop!" I half-expected a giant rat with a "Kiss the Cook" apron to take my order when I first walked into this place. Oh, but what a glorious day that was because I experienced Nirvana with the first oily, peppery bite of a large Italian...and it only cost me $10(much cheaper than the cost of all the useless Buddhism books collecting dust in my basement)! The seemingly surly owner will soften if you chat with him a bit about the things he likes(which is easy enough to figure out because there are clues scattered all over the place in the form of middle-aged man Tchotchkes....dust-covered miniature football helmets, faded baseball pennants,etc.). Don't mind the missing ceiling panels, hanging extension cords, or interrogation room lighting(it's not like you'll be eating here anyway since there aren't any tables!). I'm writing this review from Virginia for a place that looks like it could barely pass a health inspection and giving in 4 stars. This speaks volumes. We've actually been getting our grinders from this place since I can remember. My grandfather would stop in here and grab a few on our way to Eastern Point Beach, they were always the best and I was thrilled that I could carry on this tradition decades later. The grinders are great quality, you stand there while the lettuce and tomatoes are cut right in front of you and the whole thing is drizzled with quality olive oil. You can get great gossip or sports talk while you wait and for $7 for a large, you can feed 3-4 people, or one hungry husband. I'll continue to patronize this place as long as its open. read more

Best grinders anywhere on amazing fresh baked bread! Now they're adding soup and fresh bread sandwiches as well as salad. It's all take out. If it's not too busy the owner is good for great conversation and if he's seen you twice he'll remember your grinder. The inside of the shop has received a much needed makeover and looks much like a cute little deli from days gone by.
