After wedding dinner at our favorite restaurant!
    Daisy E.

Thank you SO MUCH to Nick for his hospitality during our wedding dinner. I honestly could not have thought of a better way than to spend it than at the restaurant that has been a part of our family's lives for 25+ years! We came in (VERY last minute) for a small gathering after an intimate wedding. The ONLY way I could think of bringing in my new life was to have the BEST local pizza, from the BEST local pizza restaurant owner and crew. Alisha, McKenzie, and Bria (please forgive me for butchering your names!) gave the best, most attentive service and didn't skip a beat on our party of 11. STILL THE BEST PIZZA IN NORWICH (and the UNIVERSE!) Thank you for being the best part of our lunches, dinners...and, shamefully many breakfasts...for over two decades!!

All the toppings are on top the pizza and slid off. They also were not fully cooked.

We just didn't enjoy this pizza because the vegetables were not almost raw on top the pizza. It just was not good. I feel bad because I really wanted to enjoy it.

There is quite an emphasis lately on good, real, high quality pizza. Obviously Barstool Pizza has a lot to do with it - and I'm glad to see that. Great Oaks is OUTSTANDING!! The pizza gets an A grade from me! What a heavenly amount of cheese and SAUCE. YES!! SAUCE!!! So many "pizza places" these days serve absolute crap with a little burnt sauce and the worst dough. The dough was light and fluffy - not thin brooklyn style - more along the lines of an extremely high quality deep dish. But not too deep! Pizza Rant Mode - skip this and go to Great Oaks immediately for pizza if you prefer. Thank goodness for longtime mom and pop places like this. Unsung heroes of pizza! There are so many "pizza" shops like "slice of NY" and "NY pizza" and "pizza and fried chicken" places - especially in urban areas/cities, - I'm from Albany NY and there must be a half dozen of these "pizza" places. You probably know what I'm talking about here. Pizza is getting dumbed down. Severely, severely dumbed down and low quality from these late night/open till 2 or 4 am college neighborhood "pizza" shops. The dough is awful. The cheese is salty and thin. AWFUL. But...they're affordable and throw in a "2L pepsi and garlic knots" special. But no, they don't care about quality and obviously cheap out on all the ingredients. We had the personal size chicken ranch pizza and the personal cheese pizza with black olives. The sauce hits amazing. The dough is savory and light and the cheese is perfect. They have perfected pizza! We each (3) had a dessert. The baklava - homemade by the owner's wife. It was on thicker/layered side and melted in the mouth. The rice pudding - also homemade. Delicious and refreshing! The chocolate cake - not made on premises, but clearly - thawed, fresh and ready with whipped cream and chocolate drizzle. HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

I've had their pizza, and it's ok. It's greasy, and has a cracker like crust. Solidly in the realm of greek pizza. the sauce is a little sweet, and I don't think I will ever get over the fact that they put the toppings under the cheese. That said, it's decent. For what it is. But you're talking to a guy that accepts pizza variety and likes all types of the circle of bread with sauce cheese and toppings on it, up to and very much inducing the pie form that is made in Chicago. That said, what they do, they do WELL. It's Greek. It's all Greek. And it's good. The last couple times I've gone I've had the Chicken Gyro platter. You get a salad, a chicken gyro, and fries. There's a lot of food here for $12. I've also had the Chicken Parm sub, which was good. (But not the best chicken parm I've ever had.) The fries are good, and crisp. the salad is mostly iceberg, but there are peppers, tomato, onion, cucumbers, LOTS of Feta, and a dolmathakia. Delicious. Lots of dressing choices, too. The staff is very nice. The manager/owner always checks in with me at check out to see how the meal was. So far, it's always been Very Good.

Classic diner that's friendly, very clean and delicious. The waitress & staff greeted most guests by name, that's a great sign to me. The name says pizza, and lots of ToGo orders went out the door; but the menu includes chowder, soups, grinders, gyros, salads and a nice range of Italian dishes. We ate every last bit including salads, soups, gyros and hot, crispy fries. All portions were generous for a very fair price. After a long day at Mohegan the 2 minute drive to this little oasis was well worth the stop. We'll definitely be back. FYI - EV Drivers - the Nissan dealer across the street has several nice, new J1772 charges to the left, toward the service door.

After a night checking out a new gaming venue at the casino we decided to go have dinner at an old school greek family pizza house. We decided on Great Oak located on West Thames Street here in Norwich. We arrived about an hour prior to closing time and upon entering we were cheerfully greeted and told to sit wherever we wanted. We were given menus and the server took our drink request. When the server returned with our beverages we were ready to place our dinner order. We ordered a meatball calzone and a pepperoni pizza. I must say the meatball calzone did not disappoint. Perfectly seasoned meatballs sliced and combined with shredded mozzarella cheese, whole milk ricotta cheese, wrapped in light and crispy pizza dough, and baked to perfection. Equally as good was the pepperoni pizza; a perfect amount of sweet and tangy tomato sauce spread on their outstanding dough, then a layer of shredded cheese followed by a layer of sliced pepperoni and topped with a final layer of more shredded cheese, and baked to perfection. Our server and the entire staff never made us feel rushed, the atmosphere and the quality of our food made this a perfect ending to a great night.

9/29/2022 I always come here when in Town . It's was close to closing the daughter was extremely pleasant and nice 5 stars . I ordered a Hawaiian Pizza and a Ham and Cheese Grinder Toasted . I asked up front hopefully you don't use thick ham on your Grinders it's gross . I was told no they do not . The Pizza was undercooked and soggy and raw and the Grinder was over loaded with old ham and dripping with oil . Inedible threw in the trash . If you want un cooked food by lazy employees this place is for you . When the owner is there it's never this bad .

A perfectly cooked Greek style pizza. The restaurant is that awesome "70's style" vibe which I love. The service was awesome. It was my first time there but the staff treated my like a was a long time customer. You don't find a lot of places like that anymore.

A lot of reviews seem to harp on the interior, so I'll say it gave a double wide converted into a restaurant vibe. Ultimately, however, it was clean and comfortable, and that's what I want from a restaurant. Service was friendly, but I definitely sat without a coffee refill for a while, or any kind of attention, while the waitress chatted with her friends at the next table over. Food wise, the menu is classic diner, nothing too fancy, and a small enough variety of underlying ingredients that you can be confident they're doing the cooking. I got onion rings, along with two eggs and a ribeye. The onion rings were great, crispy but not burnt, good batter. The eggs were actually over easy, like I ordered, which is a huge positive. The ribeye didn't have much flavor, but they have A1, and it was a little undercooked, but I would rather that than overcooked. The coffee was brewed well, not burnt nor bitter. Other notes: the menu has an egg price modifier note, but the prices were as listed, so either they've updated the menu or the egg crisis is over enough that they stopped modifying the price. There's a sign at the register, but not in the menu, that paying with a card, debit or credit, will garner you a 4% fee, that you avoid by paying cash.

There's broken or unplugged machines littering the room, and, as another reviewer pointed out, very unfriendly locals. We ate there when Butch was out of town, so I'm unable to judge the food based on his cooking but her cooking was absolutely horrendous. She had no clue how to even salt and pepper things properly - let alone even applying spices to make home fries... This was the absolute worse breakfast that I've had in the state. Would not recommend at all.

This is a place where a non-member walks in and everyone drops their utensils, the music on the jukebox comes to a screeching halt and everyone in the place looks to see who you are...LOL. That was how we felt entering as non-members (apparently this small hole-in-the-wall has 1900 dues paying members?! I think the whole city of Norwich must be a member here!) There is a doorbell which you buzz to be let in, although there is signage outside, so you can easily find the place when driving by. I think my sister and I were a little put off and might have turned around and walked out, but that would have been too obvious and rude. (We also had sign-in to the guest book upon walking in and be approved by a paying member). Turns out, the owner Butch himself, was on site along with his sister, aka the cook. He apparently has been running the place for 40+ years and opens it every night starting at 11 pm through the early afternoon hours of 1 pm (he is a self admitted insomniac). This place clearly does not follow the standard rules! Jukebox was pumping with Elvis hits and other various songs from the 50's and 60's (Mr. Sandman, etc.). Food was surprisingly good...had a pancake (for $1.95!) and corned beef hash. My sister had a egg/bacon/cheese on a hard roll with a side of home fries. They also have a pool table which probably gets a lot of use in the late night hours of operation.

I finally met up with a few friends--one who lives in the area--and we decided to try it. I'm really glad we did. Nothing disappointed. The tamales were moist--something I appreciate since many places serve them too dry. The only small suggestion I'd make is for the staff to ask if we'd like extra sauce for the tamales, which would make them perfect. Others in our group tried tacos and tostadas and felt the portions were generous; delicious and the prices very fair. The décor gives you the feeling of a neighborhood spot in Mexico. It's not fancy, but it's warm and welcoming. There were a lot of takeout orders while we were there--and it was only 10 a.m.--with people from all backgrounds coming in and out. Clearly, they have a loyal customer base. We were camping nearby in eastern Connecticut when a rainy evening pushed us off the campsite and toward something warm and worthwhile. Canggio was at the top of the list. The restaurant occupies a modest but comfortable space on Lafayette Street in Norwich. We sat at the small bar, which ended up being exactly the right call. That night we were the only bar guests who weren't grabbing takeout, which meant we had the staff's full attention. Small bar, attentive service -- a combination I always appreciate. We shared the mussels to start, and they were genuinely unlike any version I've had before -- in the best possible way. Rather than the standard white wine and herb preparation you find everywhere, these arrived in a rich, layered broth alongside Peruvian bread that was made for soaking. My partner made a meal of the empanada and the Canggio Ensalada together -- chicken, aji verde, and Kalamata aioli in the first, mixed greens with pear, goat cheese, candied walnut, and balsamic in the second. She was happy with both. On the owner's recommendation I went with the Pollo a la Brasa, quarter chicken, dark meat. It was the right call. The chicken is a family recipe, slow roasted, and it showed -- the kind of dish that's simple on the surface but takes real discipline to execute consistently. Tender throughout, well-seasoned, with an aji verde I kept coming back to. What pushed this from a very good dinner to a memorable one was the owner himself. He took time at the bar to talk with us about the food, the concept, what we'd thought of the meal. On the way out we made a point of stopping at the open kitchen to thank the chef directly. That combination of genuine hospitality and cooking with a real point of view is exactly what I'm looking for when I travel. I'll be back the next time I am in the area, and I'd recommend Canggio to anyone who leave nearby or is willing to make the drive to Norwich. Five stars.
