We drive by Raina's Red Onion on the way to the casinos & always say we need to check it out. So we finally did! On our way to an overnight stay at Foxwoods, we ordered a large meat lovers pizza to go. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The outside is gorgeous - colorful, plenty of seating & who doesn't love twinkle lights?!?! Inside is super cozy & cute.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The staff was working hard on a very steamy, hot summer day. We got the pizza to go (sorry folks - we were hungry before I realized that I hadn't taken a photo). The meat lovers includes pepperoni, sausage, ham, bacon & hamburger. We liked it & we would order it again. There was so much meat that it actually fell off the slice when we were eating it (I know... first world problems). When we order it again, we would ask for additional sauce & cheese. We didn't get anything else because we had no where to store the leftovers at the hotel but I can't wait to order the Christo's Specialty Salad: lettuce, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, dried cranberry, walnuts, fresh grilled chicken, bacon, feta or gorgonzola. A charming restaurant whose servers and staff know the local history and will share with those interested. The food: Fresh ingredients, tasty, perfectly prepared and cooked. Delicious is an understatement. We had a veggie grinder, mousakka pizza, gyro (beef and lamb they also offer chicken) and onion rings. We have enough food for 2 additional meals for 2 of us. This quaint eatery also has a few pleasant surprises for the creative and philanthropic minded diners. [[HIGHLIGHT]]My wife and I enjoyed the ambiance of a cozy family restaurant run by a mother-daughter team (daughter-owned).[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]They immediately made you feel welcome, which makes you feel comfortable and have an enjoyable experience, with both indoor and large outdoor seating options.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] The service was exceptional, considering you order at the counter and they bring the food to your table. For a cozy little restaurant, this was the first time someone from the kitchen came out to our table to check if everything was okay and if we needed anything else; this is the type of service you expect from tableside service, not counter-ordering service. As for the food, my wife had the Veggie Pizza, and I had the Meatball Parm grinder; well, let me begin by saying that it was very delicious. Both the pizza and the grinder had cheese and sauce with an outstanding, distinctive flavor I have not tasted at any other pizza/grinder location. Furthermore, the pizza has a great crust with toasty cheese bits on the edges; absolutely delicious. For the grinder, the bread was fluffy and had a great crust, making it more delicious than at other locations I have visited. The combination of the bread, sauce, meatballs, and cheese made it one of the better Meatball Parm grinders I have tasted in the New London County area. Cheap food and rude employees. We pulled in on our way back from the beach and asked politely about the democratic sign in the front, she responded with assuming our political beliefs and was rude. Overall experience - mediocre. I got a large pizza with pepperoni, onions and peppers. The pan pizza was unfortunately subpar - it was pretty greasy and the middle of the pizza was soggy. The outer edge of the pizza was ok, but the crust had little flavor. The service was decent, the employees were friendly and attentive. Unfortunately the product just isn't very good. This was such a surprise stop just before the casino and we'll worth the stop. The burgers are big juicy and made perfectly. The fries are amazing and I didn't even try the pizza. A must if you are driving to the casino the best part are their prices. More than worth the price. What has happened damned near every time I ordered jalepenios on a grinder is, I get charged an extra dollar, and dont get jalepenios on the sandwich....
