Luca was my amazing server. He was very attentive and answered all our questions. My wife was treating for dinner with a friend and everything we ate left us with our mouths open waiting for the next thing to come. The food is so good at this place was so many layers of flavors on everything from the appetizers all the way up to the dessert. I would absolutely recommend this place for dinner. It's a little pricey, but not bad. Actually, knowing a lot of people would pay for this complexity of wonderful food. It's actually a great value. And I would recommend for those that want to try something really unique they do a grappa tasting where you can taste three wrappers off of their massive selection. Grandpa is a distilled beverage. That's pretty strong, but unique in itself. Everything was incredibly a beautiful twist on old tastes. There were flavors that I had never conceived of putting together myself and now it's got me thinking. Well done our server and the staff were all amazing from the minute. We hit the door and got a big smile and walk to our table to the last people giving wave to the bartenders on the way out. Well done.

This place is so cute and classy! The food is good, but make sure if you don't like your pasta al dente you tell them! I made that mistake and felt like a lot of the dishes were undercooked, but it just wasn't made to the way I like it! Otherwise, the restaurant was super cute, easy to get a reservation on a Saturday night for 7 and wasn't too crowded. Definitely try it out if you're in the area! Drinks are great too!

Donato is classy space in Elmwood, that perfectly complements an evening at the theater, and a stroll to Mrs Dalloways and / or The Book Society. I've been watching Stanley Tucci's program on food in Italy, and was pleased to see some dishes on the menu that he's gushed over. This seems like a more authentic Italian experience than most places. I had the Tortini, while the wife enjoyed the Cacio E Pepe. Both were excellent, and the portions were reasonable. I also had a carafe of Primitivo. For dessert was a hazelnut cake with chocolate sauce and hazelnut gelato, and I had affogato using hazelnut gelato. Absolutely fabulous. The prices unfortunately will prevent us from dining here regularly, but like I said, this is a great component in a lovely date night.

Donato has a cute atmosphere, and a good variety of food / drink options, but I have a few things to note (why I'm rating them 3 stars): 1. Some of the food was a bit bland / not that exciting (the gnocchi sauce was great, but the gnocchi themselves were plain and a bit lacking on flavor). 2. The service was good until it left a weird taste in our mouth... our server was really nice and felt like she was taking care of us. We ordered the Scarpetta appetizer which is basically focaccia with burrata cheese in tomato sauce. It was probably the most flavorful thing we had, but she brought it out with an extra side of focaccia (that we did NOT ask for, mind you) and said she felt this needed more bread and wanted to bring us some. Super nice! Until she charged us for that side of focaccia (that again... we didn't ask for), at the end of the meal. Ok, $4 is NOT a big deal, but the principle of this... left us confused and felt cheated. Not cool. 3. Not living in Berkeley, and about 20ish min away from here, it's an outing to go out here. I don't think I'd push to come back here, honestly. I'd come back if it came upon me, but I do think the service note I mentioned above really left a weird impression.

Had dinner on a Sunday night here with family and had a lovely time. The inside has a great atmosphere with great lighting and lots of wine!! The menu had a lot of options, and there were a lot of seafood options that caught my eye! I'd stick to the pastas over the entrees as I felt they were the highlight of the meal. The pasta was cooked perfectly and handmade by the restaurant!! The service was a little slow, so be sure to come when you're in the mood to wine and dine.

I recently tried this for lunch and overall thought it was just okay. The appetizers and ricotta were decent, but the cacio e pepe was a real disappointment. I almost never send food back, but in this case I couldn't eat it -- the pasta tasted like it had just been microwaved, lacking the freshness and flavor you'd expect from such a classic dish. While the atmosphere was nice and some items were enjoyable, I probably wouldn't try it again.

Came here on a Thursday evening and was seated immediately. Great server she was so animated and fun. Loved the food, drinks, and service. My friend and I both got a cocktail and it was yummy. I tried their mushroom pasta it was SOO good! Great experience all around. Parking is a bit hard to find so allocate some extra time for that! Price is reasonable for the delicious bites!!

Top: Salad and burrata. Bottom (left to right): SPAGHETTI NERI and marscapone caramel dessert (forgot the actual name)

Thanks Yelp for helping us find Donato & Co after finding out that another Italian restaurant we wanted to try was closed on Sunday. Making a reservation was easy through Open Table. We opted for indoor seating as yesterday evening (08/11/2024) was a bit chilly. We started out with the burrata and mixed greens. Burrata and olives were tasty. We liked the various greens and thought they paired nicely with the vinaigrette. I had my eye on the squid ink pasta on Yelp and decided to order it based on the waitress' recommendation. First time having squid ink pasta and it won't be my last. Aunt got the pork chop, which she enjoyed. For dessert, I had the marscapone with salted caramel sauce. It came with almonds and rice crumbles. The crumbles weren't my fave, but I liked the marscapone and caramel. I also considered the hazelnut cake so I think I'll try that next time. Waitress was super nice and gave good recommendations. Service was somewhat slow and the restaurant wasn't super busy. We'd definitely come back for the food. Hopefully next time service will be quicker!

    Do you have outdoor heaters?

    Yes

    Where do you park?

Street parking or there is a public lot off of Russell, a block off of Ashby. Usually parking off of College is easier to find (and not metered)

How long will it take to have dinner here? We have a 6:15 reservation and tickets for an 8:00 performance at Zellerbach Hall. Is that enough time?

    Yes you can make it.

Service was attentive and helpful, the room is pretty from the outside and prettier from the inside. Very good salads, healthy, tasty, and the safron salmon with potatoes and vegetables was delicious. Hit all the notes, and left open the spaces too. Excellent cooking and serving. We both went for Creme Brulee and weren't sorry. Good wine selection, 1 glass each, and good decaf with dessert. There's a lot of competition on this end of College Ave, Marica are top-tier, on par with the now closed, and missed, "Oliveto". A place to take anyone for a very special meal.

A search on this website resulted in Marica having it on their menu. He booked a 7:30 PM reservation for two. We arrived early. What started out as a not too pleasant experience for us was the attitude of the guy who greeted us when we entered the restaurant. Attitude bordered on rudeness (3 star). We somewhat tolerated it, not knowing what to expect next. The restaurant was filled with diners, and the only available seating was not far from the front door. Oh, the chill was in the air, and my not wearing a sweater and/or light jacket to stay warm had me shivering. I had to brave the element (LOL). Since there was no Chilean sea bass on their daily special menu, it took a little longer for my companion and I to peruse the menu, and decide what entrees we were willing to have. Usually I would order an Arnold Palmer as a beverage; however, this time I decided to be adventurous - reisling peach spritz please - to whet my appetite. My date had the Temescal pilsner. Eats: Grilled salmon arange ginger saffron blanc beurre, roasted potatoes and vegetables. Korean short ribs, honey garlic gochujang marinade, mashed potatoes and vegetables. Our meals were on point and bomb-diggity delicious. The arange ginger saffron was perfect with the carrot. It reminded me of glazed carrots. The green beans were fresh and not overcooked. Ooh, the Korean pork ribs were tender and that sauce was sweet and had a subtle kick of spiciness. (Definitely a perfect complement for the pork ribs.) I have to admit the chef knew how to burn. Food tasted so good that figuratively speaking y'all gotta slap the cook and his mama. Ambiance: Comfy and casual. Despite the dining area is small, still it is a great restaurant for dining on a Friday evening. From my perspective and vivid imagination with the indoor lighting, it exuded a romantic atmosphere. Only in my mind I can hear soft jazz in the background. What convinced me to give Marica a 5 star rating? It was none other than Enriqueta, our waitress. She was pleasant, attentive and so accommodating. The chef lost our order ticket; thus, the wait time for our meal took a bit longer than we anticipated. She came to the rescue and comped us with dessert - chocolate souffle with homemade vanilla ice cream. It certainly was a gesture of kindness to have my date and me smiling from ear to ear. Return visit? Yes, mos def...not the rapper for Chilean sea bass. Enriqueta said I can always call to find out what their daily special is.

Table was dirty from previous guest which usually doesn't bother me be ut little things started adding up. Service took a while. Oysters came out first. 20 min. They were fresh and delicious. Just enough to get the palette opened up. $46 though? Way overpriced but was willing to overlook since it is Mother's Day. Next up - clam chowder, 10 min after they took the tray for the oysters. Smallest bowl I ever saw. Flavor was good. Temperature was luke warm. Broth was thin. $10. Not worth it. Last was the fish and chips. 10 min after picking up the chowder bowl. Portion looked good enough to make up for the small clam chowder, except it was under seasoned. Fish texture was a bit dry too. Fries were meh. Between the overall vibe...the overpriced items...the time between dishes...and the lack of flavor, I will continue my search for an oyster spot in this neighborhood.

The menu is always in a state of flux, much of it in French (none of us are fluent), and only one lager beer on tap. On the spendy side of the spectrum. Editorial comments: First time visit, so I didn't really know what to expect, although I've had my share of trendy little restaurants. Upon arriving at the outdoor podium to check in, a young man in a paint spattered T-shirt greeted us and showed us our table. I wasn't expecting formal dinner wear, but is there such a thing as too casual? However, the food and service didn't disappoint. I don't eat mollusks or raw shellfish, but my catfish was excellent. The beer was OK. I would suggest reading the current menu prior to arriving if possible, so the ordering process isn't needlessly drawn out. Have your questions on the tips of your tongues, unless you're a regular who is familiar. Not in the greatest neighborhood, parking can be a challenge. We chose to take Lyft to and from, which turned out to be a good choice. Small. Bohemian. Uber casual-chic. Bring sun screen and a hat if you're seated outside. Background music was good, classic rock without rap or hip hop influences. Worried about being under-dressed? Don't be. You'll fit right in, and may be offered a job!

Wood Tavern met the criteria for a relatively nice American restaurant in North Oakland. We visited for lunch and wanted to make this special for our mom, so we were perhaps a bit overdressed in business casual, but this is Oakland after all. On an ordinary Thursday, there were multiple groups waiting outside for the restaurant to open at 11:30 AM. That in itself should tell you how popular this place is. My wife and I dined at sister restaurant Southie next door a few years ago and really enjoyed it (I also rated it five stars on Yelp), so I was confident Wood Tavern would not disappoint. I initially booked our reservation using OpenTable to link it to my account and get 100 points. Since the max party size for Wood Tavern on OpenTable is four, I had to call to get it changed to eight. Due to the large party size, the restaurant also required me to give them my credit card info and be subject to a $25 per person no-show fee. Upon arrival, our tables were ready for us in the back corner near the open kitchen. The restaurant is true to its name with a shared bar and dining room space that evoke the feel of a wood tavern. As for what to order, I recommend all of the dishes we got. It really just depends on what you like and/or what you're in the mood for. Everyone loved the food. The beet salad was fresh and flavorful, the pastrami was one of the best I've had anywhere, my mom raved about the seafood stew, my brother-in-law gobbled up all of the casarecce, and the burger was outstanding. Service was polite and speedy. Our server Sophia C was awesome. You cannot go wrong with their menu. Our table got the oysters, roasted beets, French fries, Brussels sprouts, and sourdough bread (comes with a delectable dipping sauce/oil). For dinner, two got halibut, one burger, and I got the fried rice. Everyone's dishes were wiped clean! The pacing of the restaurant makes you really enjoy your dinner, the company, and the energy. They bring new plates and silverware to you at each course, which is a nice touch. The waiter, I wish I got this name was fantastic. You could tell he loves hospitality. So kind, explained the menu, gave recommendations and made the whole experience lovely. The service was phenomenal. For dessert we got the chocolate cake, mango cake, and the mint ice cream. Everything was so good. I look forward to dining here again! We only got pictures of the dessert!
