Yes! The crispy pan fried soup dumplings (sheng jian bao) are such a nice diversion from the more standard xiao long bao you find everywhere now. Their XLB sampler is also great, but come here for the crispy variety that is much less common. And be careful, the juice can squirt pretty far if you're not careful! read more

On our first day in NYC, we were craving some really good Chinese food. When we researched options, Shanghai Time kept appearing as a great restaurant so we had to try it. We were so glad that we did. We were really glad we did because it was fantastic. The staff there were very nice and attentive. We love dim sum and this was a wonderful place to have it. They had a really cool version of soup dumplings. The ones they had were crispy and crunchy with soup inside. They're hard to cut without a knife and the soup kept squirting out at me so be careful eating them when they're still really hot. They were really good. Absolutely loved the pork buns which were super flavorful and pillowy goodness. Noodles are my favorite thing to have and these were fantastic. Loved the beef and the flavor of the sauce. Decided to give this place another try and man....its just consistently mediocre. Service is much much better this time. Very attentive but the food is still lacking. Pork soup dumplings: 3.5/5 these aren't bad. A little bland, strong msg taste. The vinegar improves it a lot. Pan fried soup buns: 3/5 just ok. Also strong msg flavor. The vinegar also helps with flavor. Pepper beef stir fry: 1.5/5 this has no beef flavor at all. It's so bland. It tastes only of soy sauce and oyster sauce. Basil chicken: 1.5/5 this is the same as the beef dish. It's hardly any discernible flavor. I don't taste the basil and it only tastes like soy sauce and oyster sauce. Crab roe noodles: 4/5 this saved the meal for me. Not the best crab noodles I've ever eaten but it's decent compared to everything else. Decent Chinese food for being close to Times Square. We tried the pan fried pork buns, soup dumplings, house special fried rice, pork belly baos and chili wontons. Out of the five, the pork buns and the soup dumplings were the best. They had steaming hot soup and the skin on the soup dumplings were nice and thin but didn't rip. They only came in quantities of 4 which is sadly really small and not great value for the price. The fried rice was also delicious, and while I liked the spicy wontons I didn't like that the peanut sauce took away from the spicy flavor. I think the pork belly bao is worth skipping because I found this to be pretty boring and uninteresting compared to others I've had. The pork belly itself was kind of thin and not the chunky kind you'd expect. I was also a bit disappointed to find out that if you want chili oil, you have to pay for it. The best part of the meal was the crab soup dumplings which had thick enough skin that didn't break when you grab them, filled with lots of meat and soup. The scallion pancakes didn't have any scallions in it and just tasted like fried oil. The pan fried soup dumplings have a very thick outer skin that make it difficult to bite into. I stumbled upon a new years until lunar new year dine in promotion (on social media) for either their pork soup dumplings or pork pan fried buns for 1$ each. 4 dumplings for 4$ (1 promo per person). The food was incredible and made super fresh to order. My favorite was the pan fried buns - they fry the top of the bun instead of the bottom with an amazing crisp. Hot soup is prone to gushing out of the bun, so consume with caution so you avoid burning your tongue. 100% recommend getting those pan fried buns. The soup dumplings were also good, but not as memorable as the pan fried buns (shengjianbao). They do the noodles pretty well as well - the only disappointment was the tofu crab sauce dish that I ordered. The tofu/sauce felt bland and lacked flavor. Despite that, the pan fried buns just rocked it outta the park for me so much I still say it's 5 stars in my book. The interior was also very comfy for dine in - they started using ipads for customers to order from - and the pictures helped a lot in the ordering process. Was brought here by an instagram post that my friend saw and it looked so good on screen. We ended up being pretty disappointed with our experience... so don't always trust what you see on social media! We ordered the pan fried pork soup dumplings, the regular Shanghai pork soup dumplings, cold sesame noodles, and the Shanghainese rice cakes with pork. As I'm writing this, I'm realizing all our proteins were pork haha. Both soup dumplings we felt was a must when trying any new (new to us) Shanghai place. The regular ones I'd give a 4/5 for flavor but also because one arrived popped. The pan fried ones were very filling because the dough was thicker than we expected. It doesn't compare to the same dish from other places with super thin and crispy skin, which is personally my preference. So 2/5 stars for that. The cold noodles (2/5) - we ordered because it was 95 degrees out with high humidity and we just needed something cold and refreshing. It was cold is but not refreshing and the flavor just wasn't what we expected- it leaned towards the saltier side than peanut buttery. Some cucumbers on top would have made it better. By far, our favorite was the rice cakes with pork. We happily enjoyed all of it. The texture and chewiness of the rice cakes, combined with the very savory flavors were great! We also appreciated the couple pieces of vegetables that it came with. (4.5 out of 5 stars - for the flavor it was good but the portion size for this shared dish was smaller than when compared to other Shanghai places. The interior was kind of decorated. Service was good, it's more compared to a cafe than a restaurant. When you come in and are seated, you order food through the iPad and "send it to the kitchen". The food does take while to come. During your meal, they pretty much leave you alone. You can "call waitstaff" from the top of the iPad if you need something. After your meal, you ask for the check and they bring a receipt to you. I'm always in the area, catching a movie or two at AMC, so I was thrilled to find this excellent spot for Shanghainese food back in March! I've since been back multiple times, and their food never lets me down. There's a good amount of seating, the staff is friendly and helpful while thankfully not overtly attentive, and it's also open shockingly late if Google is to be believed. Crab meat pan fried soup dumplings - Their sheng jian bao is top notch. I get the crab version every time I'm here. They're so absurdly juicy and flavorful, with a perfectly crispy bottom. Be careful though, these are real squirters. On our first visit, my partner bit into one soon after they arrived at the table, and the soup burned his cheek. Pretty sure he's (mentally) scarred for life now. Proceed with patience and caution! Garlic oil boiled shredded eel over noodles - Gotta pay $2 extra for the dry noodles mixed with sauce, but it's worth it. The sauce is delicious and perfectly coats these noodles (which I've already waxed poetic about). A really savory dish, and one of my favorite things here. Beef stew noodle soup - A giant bowl filled with nice, chewy noodles and flavorful broth. Sauteed crab meat over noodles - Alas, this inexplicably includes shrimp, which I can't eat. But I tried my partner's, and the crab stew is very tasty, with the same bouncy, quality noodles. Shanghai style meatballs - The entree portion comes with three ginormous lion's head meatballs that are moist and super tender, with little crunchy bits of water chestnut mixed in, and a thick sauce with that signature five-spice flavor. It's one of the better iterations I've had. There's also some bok choy to lighten up the dish. Shredded beef with hot peppers udon - Not really that spicy, but it's a reliable, comforting dish. Shanghainese rice cakes with pork - The rice cakes are soft and chewy. I could've used a bit more sauce, but you can't go wrong with this dish. Dan dan noodles - Pretty good, but my undisputed champion is still Han Dynasty's version, so I probably wouldn't reorder these when there are so many other things on the menu. Sweet and sour flounder filet - My partner ordered this, and it's fine... exactly what you think it'd taste like. As with sweet and sour pork chops, this one's fried and not crunchy since it's smothered in sauce. Another one I'd skip in favor of their other menu items. If you pay with cash, you can also try their sweet rainbow rice balls bisque or red bean rice cakes with mixed fruit for free! The soup was hot and comforting, kinda like an egg drop dessert soup, and the different rice balls had strawberry, peanut, and black sesame filling. I prefer this over the red bean rice cakes with mixed fruit, which is actually one big sweet rice mound with red beans, golden raisins, and a syrupy sweet sauce. Amazing sheng jian bao!!!!!! Didn't try the beef noodle soup myself, but my brother in law raved about it. I don't know if the cuisine is strictly shanghainese but I think most of the food here is really solid. The little wonton soup is always sooo delicious and their kung pao chicken as well. The service is fast and you order everything on an ipad. I would say the atmosphere doesn't look super fancy or anything but the food is quite good. I haven't had anything here I dislike yet! They are reliable and I have taken some friends here, who were also pleasantly surprised by this spot. Highly recommend for some cozy chinese food! read more

Nice little ambience. Has a C grade health rating for some reason but happy to say no adverse GI upset or anything following this meal. Maybe a 3.25-3.5/5 stars in actuality. We got the pan fried soup dumplings in both the regular pork flavor as well as the crab + pork flavor. Additionally, got dan-dan noodles and the steamed soup dumpling sampler. Pan-fried soup dumplings: LOADED w/ soup, just so much soup, such good soup ratio. The skin is a little thick for my liking but there is good filling to skin ratio so not all terrible. A little pricy, would've expected 5 dumplings but it is New York so I guess that is par for the course. Will say that the crab-flavored one is not worth the extra $3 or so. From my first bite, all I can say is that it tastes weird. Not sure exactly how to describe it but I was a little taken aback by it. Definitely was not enthused to finish eating it. And I had two of the four so it was not just due to one bad one in the batch. Dan-dan noodles - good! has a nice a little kick to it, great flavor, no complaints. Sampler - a good idea if you want to try the different types of soup dumplings but also a little awkward to share because there's only one of each type. The regular pork and the crab one are both good. The crab steamed soup dumpling did not have the same weird taste to it as the pan-fried option. Did not try the truffle or chicken one. The interior of this place is lovely, with nice decor, bright lighting, pretty chandelier, and plenty of seating. I had a hard time deciding what to order, but finally went with the 5 Colors Soup Dumplings and Scallion Pancakes. The Soup Dumpling flavors consisted of Truffle Pork, Crabmeat with Pork, Shrimp, Pork and Chicken. My favorite was the Truffle, as the truffle taste shone through. I also enjoyed the Crabmeat with Pork. There was some soup inside, and the skin was a little on the thick side. The Scallion Pancakes were satisfyingly crispy and thin, but way too oily. I got to try my friend's Fried Pork Dumplings, and this was quite tasty. The Dumpling was wonderfully crunchy, filled with tender, juicy pork. Service was okay. Upon being seated, there was a paper menu, as well as an electronic one. I looked at the paper menu first, and some of the items were no longer available. The dishes are definitely typical Shanghai style, which I enjoy very much. We ordered the pan fried dumplings, in both the pork and the crabmeat. However I was disappointed with the crabmeat one, it was not as flavorful as the pork dumplings. We also ordered the pork with bamboo and mustard green noodle dish (Without the soup!), which is so much better than with the soup. And the typical Shanghai style meatballs. All of the dishes were great, however as it is with any Chinese type food, it must be served hot. I felt the pan fried dumplings did not have the same texture if I would've enjoyed it piping hot.
