It consisted of a steamed rice roll which includes beef, shrimp and egg plus added corn, scallion, and bean sprouts and a small container of sweet soy sauce. This was the first time I've had a rice roll, but it is similar to items found at dim sum. The rice roll is quite large, with a soft texture but it holds the food inside fairly well. I poured the soy sauce over the entire rice roll. I would say it is quite tasty but needs the soy sauce. Commonly, a hot sauce is also used but this was not supplied. Cozy Rice is one of my favorite lunch spots in midtown! I've brought a few coworkers here as well, and all have enjoyed it. The steamed rice rolls are so tasty (I think I've tried all of the fillings at this point) and always perfectly cooked. The portions and flavors feel like comfort food, but the meal isn't too heavy for lunch. It's also very reasonably priced for lunch in midtown at about $10 per rice roll. The Chinese crepe is also very good, but definitely a little heavier than the rice rolls. I like mine with pork floss for an extra bit of sweet and savory. The sides are also great, my favorites are the shrimp dumplings and the steamed egg custard bun. I typically do one of these in addition to a rice roll, and that keeps me full (and very happy) for the rest of the work day. The people who work there are quiet but friendly, and you can order at the kiosk in the stand. Alternatively, you can order ahead on their website - I usually order online and it's always ready within 5-10 minutes. The food hall is small and can get pretty busy during the lunch rush, but you can usually find seats. There are a few other shops in there, and I usually stop at the Kung Fu Tea for a drink to go with my lunch. Either way, it's close enough to Bryant Park that you can always sit and eat outside. read more

Never in my wildest dreams did I think I could get freshly steamed rice rolls in the heart of midtown. It's kinda crazy that my favorite street food is becoming...trendy... now? I'm not complaining if that means I can escape my corporate office in the middle of the workday to get my ultimate comfort food for lunch. Yesterday, I ordered the grilled pork (aka roast or bbq pork) steamed rice roll w/ scallions (1st veggie is free/included) and for an extra $2 I added curry fish balls. The total came out to be a bit over $10 which is so reasonable for midtown. I ate it immediately inside the quiet little food court, and the quality of the noodle was perfect. Fresh, light, delicious. Cozy Rice is basically a Joe's copycat without the variety of sauces. I wish they offered the peanut and hoisin sauces in addition to the classic soy, but they did have chili oil which helped elevate the dish. I wouldn't go out of my way for this (go to Chinatown, folks!) since this is purely for the convenience of us employees in midtown during working hours. Their rice rolls are absolutely splendid: silky, delicately thin, and nicely filled with your protein of choice and one additional vegetable / garnish, gratis. (I chose beef and cilantro.) I don't think more famous purveyors of chang fen like Yin Ji Chang Fen have anything on Cozy Rice as far as the quality of the rice wrapper goes. The savory congee with thousand year egg is also perfect in its simplicity: It is a water, not broth, based concoction, made with lovely hints of ginger and bits of fresh carrots, scallion, mushroom (shiitake, I think, not the nasty button mushroom nonsense), and thousand year egg. This is exactly the kind of food one would want if one were convalescing, but thankfully one does not need to be sick to enjoy it! Don't sleep on the soy sauce / tea eggs. The shells aren't cracked well enough these days to let as much of the delicious marinade come into contact with the egg white as I'd prefer, but they do the trick in midtown. This place seems to have become quite popular! It can be crowded and busy during lunch, and everything is made to order, by hand -- so you may have a bit of a wait. It's well worth it. read more

I was so excited to try this place but was a bit disappointed. I got the rice roll and congee combo. The shrimp rice roll was ok and fairly priced given its Midtown location. However, I do think they overdid it on the five spice seasoning and the flavor was a bit off. However, this might be a fluke and I'm hopeful that their other rice rolls might be better. On the other hand, the congee was incredibly bland. It felt undercooked (the rice was floating separately from the liquid) and the preserved eggs and other ingredients didn't add any flavor to it. I was really craving steamed rice rolls and this was the closest location to me without having to go all the way to chinatown. Service was extremely fast however, the prices are a bit higher than the options you have in Chinatown.
