This was $28 after tax. A little expensive as my malatangs are usually $18-24 but maybe my ingredients were heavier than expected. Not sure if the pound rate is more expensive than average. I like the variety of ingredients they had. Saw some things I haven't seen elsewhere like some seafood options and cool noodle types. Ingredients felt fresher than other places and I like the variety of broth options. Would consider going back if in the area. Ice cream machine broken which is sad but jelly bar was a good final touch. Not a good place for vegetarians or people with allergies because nothing is labeled and there is so much cross contamination.

Wow, it's crazy to think I saw Growl Growl on TikTok and have been there two times ever since. I've never done individual hot pot as I've always viewed it as a group activity with others, but wow everything from the broth, ingredients, sauces, and dessert are well done. I will say, the first time we went the novelty and ingredients were far more impressive-the fish roe lucky bags were so good and I was looking forward to getting more of them in my recent visit, but I noticed they only had a tofu esque shaped shrimp topping with Chinese characters on top. Their ingredients seem to change due to seasonality / supply chain since this time I noticed they had fried egg. I do wish for the fried egg and noodles that they didn't cook them that thorough. One thing they definitely need to improve on is the consistency of their desserts-the first time I went, the soft serve machine was closed down. Recently, when I inquired about it, they told me they only had vanilla soft serve, which was less disappointing. However, when we eventually ordered, they notified us they only had matcha soft serve, which is what I've always wanted to try here. The variety of savory broths are really good-Thai Tom Yum Broth, Thai Coconut Curry Broth, Szechuan Spicy Broth and this is the perfect dinner spot for the cold winters.

Growl Growl is a new concept in NY, where you can have hotpot, but you're able to control your own portion! I thought this was super great, especially for people who want hotpot but don't want to spend $60 for AYCE, or don't want to sit down and be picky with what they order for budget. You can pick exactly what you want to add to your bowl, and then it's weighed. After that, you can pick from 5-6 different styles (original bone broth, tom yum, tomato, dry pot etc). They also have a sauce bar and a complimentary dessert bar. The original broth is so flavorful and they also do a great job not over cooking the ingredients. The decor and ambience in the restaurant is also so unique, it feels like you're eating while on vacation in Indonesia or straight out of a jungle. The staff are super attentive and super nice as well. I've been to this place over 5 times already and one of the times, the owner Lisa actually invited everyone in the restaurant to go to a table to sample some new menu items. I love that she was getting direct feedback from customers in the shop already! I'll continue to come back, and if you haven't tried it yet, you absolutely have to.

Pay per weight malatang may be one of my favorite things to eat! As a group of two, we were able to be seated pretty immediately, and from there you can just get up and start getting your food. It is a little bit more expensive than I expected per pound, like compared to Georgia, but I guess that's typical for New York. Of all the places I've been to though, Growl Growl has the most diverse options for broths. I really wanted to try the Szechuan one but I got scared because we had to get on a flight the next morning. So that's definitely on my list to try! They had a good variety of toppings too, but I wish they had fish. Also punching the air rn because I had heard and seen people post about free soft serve, but I didn't see anything inside the restaurant that had to do with soft serve, so I just assumed they didn't have it that day. But apparently you need to ask for it! But the ice jelly was so refreshing that it wasn't too big a deal. Having something so light, cold, and sweet after all the hot rich broths was so delicious.

I went to Growl Growl for lunch and it had a few parties there, but there were a lot of tables available. The staff were super kind and immediately told me about their process, talked to you about the flavors of their broth, and answered any questions I had before I started to customize my hotpot. Each pound is $17 at Growl Growl, which is definitely one of the lowest prices I've seen in the city, and their collection of meats was honestly more than I expected for the price. They also had a good amount of seafood, but I do wish that they had a larger variety of mushrooms and other veggies. They cooked and prepared the hotpot quite fast and I cannot recommend their fruit sparkling lemonades enough - I got the mango sparkling lemonade and it was probably one of the best non-caffeinated drinks I've had! My total ended up being about $24 but the amount of food I got for it when the broth was added would easily last me 2-3 meals total. If you want to save some money, I'd avoid the noodles since they were easily the heaviest item there, but I love my udon! The Szechuan broth was super spicy (just how I like it) and they also have an unlimited sauce bar and free dessert that comes with your meal (you get to make your own ice jelly!) I loved how unique the concept of Growl Growl is and I'll be back for sure!

We were in the mood for mala dry pot on a recent cold evening, and Growl Growl seemed like the best option in Midtown, despite it being primarily a specialist in soupier mala tang. Even on a weeknight, there was a good 20-30 minute wait for a table. Overall, I thought the ingredient selection was good but the sauce was so excessively oily as to take away some of the joy of eating the dish. They have a good variety of noodles, including various types of glass noodles, udon, and ramen. The tofu selection was also decent, including my favorite Xiang ling and puff tofu. Perhaps the traditional mala tang is less oily so I will give that a shot next time.

Came during grand opening when they had a discount and really enjoyed that you pay for what you want! They cook it in a broth of your choice so it's kind of similar to hot pot, but it's not à la carte or AYCE. This is great for someone like me who doesn't eat too much but still wants hot pot. I got the sukiyaki and enjoyed it since we don't have much of this type of broth in the city. I did notice that they diluted it a bit to make it more broth like which I appreciated. Service was okay, they definitely had some kinks they had to iron out but since they just opened it was understandable. Overall would recommend!

Love this spot as you can pick however much you want to put into your hot pot! The self serve area was pretty clean, but wish there were labels noting what the ingredients were (especially if someone had allergies). I got the curry soup base and my bf got the tomato soup base, both of which were pretty flavorful. Rice is an extra $2 I believe. Service was okay overall, some of the front staff were very friendly and some weren't when we were asking questions since it was our first time. The soft serve machine was also broken right when we finished and were ready for dessert so we couldn't try it :/ Overall would def come back again to try the diff broths!

Great value and options in a convenient location! Setting: Midtown Manhattan, walking distance to the Empire State Building, Times Sq, and more! Street parking will be difficult. Indoor is cozy, but not super large so do be prepared for a short wait! Service: Front of house is helpful, but when I went to checkout it was not clear that rice would be extra ($2). We also had to ask for the soft serve, so if that's something you want, make sure to ask! Food: We got the pork bone broth and Szechuan spicy broth. The pork bone broth was sadly on the watery and salty side, lacking depth; the Szechuan spicy broth was well flavored and definitely the way to go. * Pro tip: the dessert bar with brown sugar syrup is sweet and delicious.

Never been to a hot pot place that has abalone like Growl Growl! I went with fellow Yelp elites, Mei and Lonnie. I also brought my daughter to try hot pot for the first time. It was nice that they had abalone and they were not small! They were pretty big. I had to write about this because abalone is an expensive Chinese delicacy. I did not see anymore delicacies except this abalone item on the menu. Sucks that every item on the tray was priced per pound. My tray came out costly when I weighed it because I kept stocking up on almost every item on the menu. Got carried away and didn't realize that I went overboard. Luckily there was a discount that day and I had a small discount but then my tray came out a lot. There were 8 soup broths on the menu to choose from after you pay and weigh your tray. I chose the classic and mild option. It is a classic pork bone broth that is milky, natural, mild, and savory. I chose this flavor because I had a kid and I totally regret it when I tried out the hot pot. The flavor was very bland and lacking seasoning. My daughter barely ate anything because she was very young. She mostly ate the ramen noodles. I had so much on my tray that the kitchen had to break out my stuff into 2 bowls. It was a lot of food. I should have gotten a heartier seasoning broth to go with my food. Other than the hotpot, the dessert was pretty neat but there was not that much. It was just simple dessert with the ice jelly dessert. They had red beans, jelly, coconut, raisins, and peanut crunch. I grabbed a little of each to make the dessert. Afterwards, the staff gave each of us ice cream waffle cones with either vanilla or matcha green tea ice cream. I got myself a matcha green tea and my daughter had a vanilla. The ice cream was a standard cone size and very good. Decor was very nice and I love how organized all the hot pot items were in each shelf in the fridge section. Very clean environment. This place had a lot of couples in almost every table. Very good for families and couples. Not so much with children because I don't really think children and babies like hot pot that much. Well for my daughter it wasn't that great. This place is mostly for adults.

Saw this place on instagram. They have a new take on hotpot where you put all the ingredients you want in a bowl, then it is weighed and you pay based on that weight. So the heavier it is, the more you pay. So there's some strategy to it if you want to make your money' worth... or you can just go crazy for what you enjoy! For my hotpot, (you can see the ingredients I chose before it was boiled) I didn't fill a lot since I wasn't that hungry but it still came out to about $26. I also got the Japanese sukiyaki broth, which I thought was a little salty. But since you can make your own sauce to go with your hotpot, I opted for sweeter and spicier sauces to balance all the flavors out! Through their promotion, we were also able to get free magnets from checking in, matcha soft serve ice cream (also a vanilla option), and free sparkling lemonade drinks. The drinks were very subtle on flavor but we still enjoyed it! There is also ice jelly next to the sauce station for after your meal. Great palate cleanser. I really recommend adding extra peanuts for better flavor ( unless you're allergic). Speaking of allergies, I really wanted the Szechuan Spicy broth but I asked just in case and I'm glad I did - turns out that broth has a little milk in it- for all the dairy allergies or fellow lactose intolerant peeps! Overall- a great non-traditional hotpot experience!

Nothing hits quite like hot pot in winter, and Growl Growl stands out for its broth selection. The HK-style satay broth literally has my name written all over it! Unfortunately they ran out of it when I visited but I still highly recommend the ones that I got. They have a fun lineup of drinks like creamy matcha coconut, thai green tea, and sparkling fruit drinks. Most importantly, you get a FREE soft serve when you purchase a hot pot. I loved the sukiyaki one, while my friend enjoyed the coconut curry more. The seafood was insanely fresh and bouncy, just look at that gigantic squid!! Our hot pots came out super fast, making this perfect for a quick Midtown lunch. The free vanilla soft serve was super creamy, kinda like a mcdonald's sundae. The matcha one was however a bit grainy.

The tables are spacious and the place is bright. We ordered a variety of meats and veggies for hotpot and bbq and it was alright. The hot pot is definitely better than the bbq as the meat quality was too fatty for bbq. Moreover, because they don't change the grills, the oils from the meat just pool onto the grill and the meats get really oily to eat after a while. We also got the fried chicken, spring rolls, and fried buns apps and I thought that the chicken and buns were good but the spring rolls were okay. The only thing I would have to say is that the service isn't the best. Although they are kind, half of the things we ordered never arrived or we had to constantly ask them to bring it out/check on our order.

I loved this place!…read more I came here on a late Friday night, probably around 8pm and was glad that they were still opened. We were greeted very welcomely and was seated right away. It was unusually cold in NY during this time (5/23/25) and initially we were seated by the door where we would catch the cold draft every time the door opened. We asked if we can switch seats and the waiter was more than helpful. I feel bad for not getting his name, because he was very helpful throughout the entire dinner service, but, I've been walking around in the cold all day and the only thing that was on my mind at that time, was a nice warm meal. I've done a lot of Chinese hotpots and this was the first that we get the soup and grill without a price difference. The selections were typical, some may say less than other places, but, I felt that less was better. When there is too much to chose from, you don't know what to pick or pick too much. The one thing that I did missed was fresh tofu. They had a variety of tofu but not fresh tofu. But, I probably shouldn't waste my stomach space on tofu for and AYCE, anyway, lol! We opt for an non-spicy and a spicy soup base. If you are like me and do not like mala (numbing spice), I would not recommend getting a spicy soup base. Even my cousin, that does like mala, said it was a little overbearing after a while. If you do love spicy, like me, they have a condiment station to make your own sauce and have several chili options to chose from that is not numbing spice. For the price and selections, I feel that it was very satisfying. I really enjoyed their homemade peach and kumquat lemon tea; but, order fast because once it's gone, you are out of luck! The place was clean and the noise level was average. I think this is the best Chinese hotpot place that I have experienced in USA and would definitely go back!

The servers were attentive in helping us refill the broth and refilling our water. Definitely a lot calmer on a weeknight. Would come back again!

This was a good hotpot place. I dined with friends as a party of 4, and we paid about $50 each and…read moreleft pretty full. You order a la carte here, which racks up the price pretty quickly. However, this means if you don't finish any of the ingredients they pack it up for you. There were certain misses such as the staff not providing any serving utensils (tongs, ladles, etc.), but there is a call button on the iPad, to which they respond quickly. The volume is medium in the space, and their hot pot tables are quite large that we felt really far away from our friends on the opposite side lol. While this meant that we had ample room for the food we ordered, it wasn't the easiest to have a conversation, so keep that in mind. They offer an AYCE option but only after 9pm, from what I understand.

The service is quick and efficient especially considering the lively atmosphere around us. I'd highly recommend trying out the sichuan style beef tallow broth and if you're feeling adventurous one of my favorites, the fresh duck blood, specifically stands out and is the only place in New York that I know of that offers it. When I'm on this side of the city and I'm craving some spice and meat, I don't have to think twice about coming here.

Love that they put your coats and bags in a big plastic bag to protect them from that distinctive hotpot smell. And that you get an apron. And that they give you gum at the end of your meal! The workers are all really friendly and the food is pretty good quality! And it's super easy to just order off your phone at the table. We did wish the meat portions were a little bigger, but dishes like the tripe and fish came with more than we expected. We got the medium spicy beef tallow, and it was kind of too much for us! The initial flavor was so delicious, but it just builds more and more the longer you eat, so keep that in mind. I'm also super curious about the duck blood broth, so maybe I'll try that next time.
