This is nothing fancy. But if you are looking for a classic diner with nice people, this is a good place. I ordered two eggs and bacon with grits and toast. I'm a big fan of grits and it's hard to find places that serve them, so I was excited when I saw grits on the menu. It's hard to mess up this type of food, so it's my go to when eating breakfast at a place like this. I thought they did a good job. The amount of food received was good, however the bacon was my only complaint. It was almost paper thin. I like the crunch that you get from this type of bacon, but it's definitely not a lot of bacon. Prices are very reasonable and the staff was friendly. Pleasant surprise, a small town Mall actually has a nice diner offering not highly imaginative but tasty meals at a reasonable cost by 2022 stds. Lots of plain food from a bag, but prepared well in clean environment. Waitress knew most customers who distracted her with conversation so not always attentive, but this place is a local social club as much as eatery. I usually come once a week.Friday I came and had a Philly steak and cheese sandwich. Was charged 12.oo. today Saturday I checked the menu and it was 10 not 12. This is about the third time I have been overcharged at the register. Watch what they ring up gang. Today I ordered a standard egg and bacon breakfast and confirmed on the menu I was overcharged the prior day on my sandwich. A waitress delivered the food and half Mt English muffin slid on the table. She said oh sh.t. I really did not want to hear cussing. She then offered to make a new one. Normally I don't work my way through the other half and said no. I get to the register and she attempted to charge me for a full order of the muffin. I basically advised I should OT be charged full price for a mistake She made. She dropped the other half of the muffin not me. She then gave me an attitude at the register. So based on being overcharged and service attitude issues I am taking a break from Donnie for awhile. Warning for all watch what the ring up. Ambiance is vanilla but there are cute resale store peacocks and art galleries up and down stairs after or before you eat. I like art good or bad it's interesting. Food was good, but the restaurant was SEVERELY UNDERSTAFFED. Customers actually were taking the coffee pot around and refilling other customer's cups. The one waiter they had serving 10-12 tables was completely lost and was like a bull in a china shop banging into chairs as he rushed around. 6-8 customers actually gave up and left after waiting 10+ minutes to just get a menu. Again, the food was ok (not amazing) and really not worth the wait and the chaos we all had to endure. Hopefully, the owners can staff up and improve the experience. First and foremost the service was extremely slow. Very hard to get refills on coffee and drinks. The bacon was inedible and the eggs were very dry. This Diner is right in the middle of the Claybough Shopping Center. This is totally a locals place, big belly grandpas in the corner chatting with each other over coffee while Grandmas in the beauty salon that's adjacent to this diner getting her hair done. It was a "Branson" moment. I had to drag my friend to eat with me lol... small diner, warm service, good food. I ordered the BLT Sandwich and Onion Rings.. yum. Horrible food horrible service If you like slow service and burned food this is the place for you. Went on our lunch break(took my grandson to work with us) after working a very hot morning on a construction site we go into this place for a lunch. After a lengthy wait out food arrived. Two philly cheese steak sandwiches filled with burned meat and veg is. And a double cheeseburger for my fourteen year old grandson. When the server came back to the table I informed her our food was overcooked but we didn't have time to wait so we would eat it. I didn't realize how burned my grandsons burger was until we go up to leave( he left food on his plate and that never happens) his burger was black and hard burnt to a crisp. I felt horrible because i chose to eat my nasty food he didn't say anything about how burned his food was. The server saw it as I was leaving and told me to take it to the register and show them what just how burned his burger was. My husband waited to pay the bill then heard the cook and the server discuss the burger and was told because he ate half of it there was nothing they could do. I didn't ask for anything but I would have sent all the food back had I seen his burger earlier. He is a child and told me he didn't want to say anything because he didn't want to get them in trouble, I forced him to eat that garbage and they didn't have as much as an I'm sorry it we'll do better. I give this review 2 stars because none of the other diner's in my party did not get sick or die. I went to Donnie's 2 weeks ago (March 26, 2011) because the line at Billy Gayle's was too long. Our party of 7 was hungry for breakfast/brunch/lunch and arrived around 11 a.m. The layout of the place was interesting. It was something else before it was a diner. We found a large enough table and after a bit our server, possibly a daughter of the owners, took our drink orders and gave us menus. She was doing her best to hustle through the rush. She gets credit for that, at least. The menu had little pictures. Everyone was going omelet or pancake but stupid me, I locked onto this picture in the "wraps" section called a "Ribeye Wrap" which was supposed to be steak, green pepper and onion in a wrap. I got a little concerned when the waitress asked me how I wanted my steak cooked. Gee...rare would be interesting and anything more than medium would be too dry so I opted for "Medium" thinking it must be a misunderstanding anyway because as this would be eaten with my hands there can't be tough or chewy meat inside...right? Anyway, after a lengthy wait (they were pretty busy) our food arrives. Everybody's looks pretty good. The omelots promised "4-egg" which is pretty good-size, although they didn't look that large. They were apparently made in some kind of countertop omelot molding device because they all had the exact same shape. Everybody enjoyed there meal...except me. Naturally, my "steak" was a $9 breakfast. When I picked up the wrap I immediately got a handful of hot grease draining out the south end. Not just a little, but a LOT of juice/grease. No matter. Fresh flavor, right? Well, I took my first bite. Gristle city. Yuck. Tough, spit out on your plate kind of yuck. Meat was gray in color. No sign of pink. Okay, I ordered medium so there shouldn't be much pink, but I was expecting "carne asada" kind of steak wrap but this was horse-hide tough army mule steak and every single bit was a gristle-laden mouth of muck. I had to chew, sift and spit after every bite. Now I ask you, if you're eating a "wrap" shouldn't you expect to be able to chew and swallow everything that's inside without having to inspect it? Rhetorical. Anyway, the item needs to come off the menu. I told our cashier when I was paying that I was less than satisfied with my meal that recommended that it be removed from the menu, but I think she thought I was joking. Damnit! I should have gone with my first thought which was Patty Melt. I tipped well because the waitress did hustle but she ultimately wasn't the one to handle the register drawer. I would have liked to tell her that her wrap recommendation was way off and maybe she would have fed that back to the owners/chief cook/menu planner. It really needs to go. The rest of the day day I was ribbed by my fishing buddies about my bad wrap. I'll never learn!!! read more
