My husband and I ate at Donn's BBQ this morning. I ordered two barbacoa tacos. Usually their food is good but today I found 3 hair balls in one of the tacos. The hair was obvious and plain to see. I don't know if they intentionally put it there or if it was some sort of accident but it was the most disgusting experience dealing with food that I have ever had. I love this place! Great people, sweet and kind and thoughtful. Food is simply wonderful. Quick stop for morning breakfast tacos or after work for a pound of meat to go with some veggies for dinner. Even has dog bones for my pup on occasion or will let me buy a single rib for him. What is not to love? They need more parking for sure because everyone loves them. Went to Donn's on Saturday and boy was it good. I would recommend the Brisket!! And I loved they had a kids menu, the kiddo isn't big on BBQ so she was able to get chicken tenders and fries. My husband got ribs and said he should have gotten more for the ride back home. I am a big Rudy's fan and was really surprised that I liked it just as much. The sides are sides nothing really special but that didn't matter because the meat and BBQ sauce was soooo tasty, I mean the brisket was so juicy. Family style no frills restaurant. Order at the counter. The family pack we got was enough for 3-4 people. We got sausage, brisket and chicken with three sides which were baked beans, potatoes salad and cole slaw. Of the three I liked the brisket the best. Very tender. The BBQ sauce was excellent. Recently moved to the area and I got a craving for some meat. One of my neighbors recommended Donn's. When you first walk in, it can look a little rough, but don't let that stop you. The brisket is awesome. Great flavor, slices the right thickness and the smoke ring that lets you now it was done right. Turkey was also very moist and flavorful. Sauce was pretty good too. The sausage was good too, I just am not a fan of them cutting them up like I am a toddler. This is also the first place I have found Big Red soda made with real sugar. I drove past this place for many years and always was deceived by the exterior. I am very picky especially towards bbq, so I didn't think that I would like it. Finally since I work nearby now, I had to try it. And WOW!!!!!!!! It blew my mind. Best BBQ I've ever had. I first tried their pork ribs and sausage and they were AWESOME. My sister brought lean brisket to me in Orlando, FL and the family enjoyed it. Otherwise, never been to the place.

The quality does not match price! The fajitas are skimpy, the Bbq sauce is watery and the customer service is not good.

When I worked at Bergstrom (and lived on the East Side of town) this was the place to pick up some dinner and go for lunch. Personally I think it may be the best BBQ in Austin. Its not like one of those classic Texas smoke pits dives, but its got it's own unique charm. Plus this place passes the old "contractors and cops" test - its always packed full of them at lunch - which always signals good food - those guys always know the best places to eat. Used to be popular amongst the old Motorola crowd too. Its a hole in the wall - but that hole is full of delicious, wonderful BBQ. My fave was the chopped brisket sandwich, but its all darn good. Family joint with good food and they do take out. Worth the trip across I-35 even if you've never been there and great for a stop on the way back north from the Airport, especially if you are taking the 973/969 shortcut around traffic! read more

Have been here several times and EVERY time it has been great. Service is always fast and always friendly. The menu has anything and everything....dine in or to go. Migas were really good an kids liked the potato, bacon and egg tacos. Have had burgers and BBQ in past and its good as well. We could eat 3 meals a day here. read more

Donn's is a genuine family run, home town spot, no gimmicks or franchise slickery. I've tried many of the meats (brisket, Elgin sausage, turkey breast, chicken, pork ribs) and the breakfast tacos. My favorites are the brisket and turkey, but I've never been disappointed. The potato salad and cole slaw are freshly made on site (not from the side-dish factory), and the pinto beans are tender and well seasoned. Many times I've purchased family packs for take out and everyone was happy with the BBQ and fixings. I've been eating here since moving back to Austin in 1997 and the quality is consistently high. It's fun to eat in because you're with folks from all over Austin who love BBQ. read more

Great BBQ & friendly service. I've tried the brisket, turkey, sausage, fried okra, & chopped beef. The brisket was tender and juicy if you ask for the fatty pieces. The lean brisket was a bit dry. The turkey was moist & tasty. The sausage was good. The chopped beef is a good, & they pack a lot in the pint sized to-go container. They offer bread with it, plus the usual pickles, onions, & jalapenos. The large order of fried okra is HUGE, crispy, & delicious! Don't forget cobbler or banana pudding for dessert. read more

what can I say that everyone else hasn't already said? My favorites at this place are most def the pork ribs, smoked turkey,and the smoked chicken. I never get sausage at any Que joint I go to so I can't comment on the quality here. Their sweet tea hits the spot and washes down the heat of the pickled japs and spicy sauce they have here. I like the assortment of sides they have because based on the sides you determine what kind of plate your going to have. If you feel like Mexican Que get the Spanish rice and burracho beans. If your feeling like good old American Que get the potato salad and coleslaw. Also sub slaw for mac n cheese or fried okra. they are all pretty tasty. For breakfast I got to have the brisket and bean tacos. they are mean and will get you going even on your slowest most energy lacking days. They used to serve Menudo only on Sundays but I recently saw a sign saying that they now have it 7 days a week. Win for you Menudo lovers out there. As for dessert they have a nice array of your basic favorites but I usually stick with the banana pudding. All in all one of my favorite places to eat at during the work week. read more

My friends and I didn't have the best experience, which was disappointing since the reviews and photos look great! Just bad customer service. When we went to order, the cashier acted like we could not order of the menu, and the only option that was offered was the lunch special. My boyfriend ordered first said he wanted the brisket plate, but was told I will give you lunch special with one more meat, OK no worries. I asked for a chicken plate, but was told I could not with a baked potato even tho its offered that you can sub it for two sides, so we asked if I could do a turkey plate and a baked potato, then she goes I can do the same special for you as him and you can get a baked potato. Figuring I would get double turkey, and a potato. NOPE, our order comes out and I have brisket, sausage, and a baked potato, just like my boyfriends (except the potato, he got sides). I don't eat pork, so my boyfriend was happy he got extra sausage, the brisket was flavorless and had lots of fat on it, I didn't care to eat it. So I ended up with an overpriced baked potato. My friend and her boyfriend ordered behind us and she had the same issue with the baked potato, and the cashier pushing the lunch special, she ordered a plate with two sides, but got a sandwich. read more

This would of been our 6 year ordering barbeque for holiday party. This is also the first year I dealt with Denise. She did not take it into consideration that we have order tacos every morning for last 9 years. This was for a group of 27 people. I cancel the order after calling Bill Miller on slaughter. We decided to visit Donn's BBQ after reading the positive reviews here on Yelp. So after church on Sunday, we head over to Donn's... and what a little gem it is.. we ordered the Brisket Plate and the Turkey Plate based on the reviews, and I got Barracho Beans and Cole Slaw as my sides, my bride got Green Beans and Potato Salad. The gentleman who took our order was very helpful and welcoming, the folks preparing the plates were quick to fill our order, and we went to sit down in the dining room. The food very good. I was impressed by the brisket and the turkey both.. they were flavorful and moist, the sides were very good (we didn't really care for the potato salad, but we're not big on pickle-y relish in that kind of thing), the barracho beans were a big hit with us! The sauce is quite flavorful without overpowering the flavor of the meat.. like I said, a gem that happens to be pretty close to home.. we'll be back soon. read more

We stopped at the Donn's on FM 969 and the food was terrible and overpriced. The brisket tasted as if it had been boiled and was mostly fat, as if it had not been trimmed at all. i feel bad giving them 1 star, but 3 years ago this was 5+ stars and it's always a bummer to have one of your favorite places go downhill..... The staff is good, it's the cleanest BBQ eatery I've ever been to. When menu prices increased over the 20 years we've been going here it was always modest and since the quality/value remained constant, no problem. It's been a couple of years since my last visit and I was shocked that my go-to reliable tacos were 1/3 the size they used to be........skimpy fillings, the wonderful potatoes we used to get in them are chunks instead of the thinner shreds/slices and the meat portions in them used to always be half instead of 1/4-1/3 ratio they now are. Maybe since they switched to offering the entire menu instead of only breakfast until 10 or 10:30 we thought o well maybe they're better in the mornings instead of our late afternoon visit. The brisket, maybe there's a new pit master that's filling in? Honestly the portion shrinkage is atrocious! The $$$$ spent on upgrading the counter/fountain space seem to have been subtracted from the food budget, which is a huge mistake. Never imagined that Bill Miller would be better than Donn's, but now it is. We even did a taco taste comparison a few days later with Bill Miller, Donn's and the trailer @ Blue Bluff and fm969 MiniMart. Donn's was unanimously last place. Maybe we'll try again in a few months, but for now the BM drive thru is king. I'm so glad i found out before bringing my in-laws here! read more

I have made this one of my stops on the way home for some BBQ. The prices are very reasonable and the quality of the food is exceptional every time I stop by. I love chopped beef and chopped chicken to take home and eat on during the week.
