We have taken our cars to Don's for over 30 years and they have always done a great job. We have always gotten our cars back in "like new" condition and could not even tell where they made the repairs. They are in tight with CSAA so you don't have to worry about any paperwork, they do it all. Getting in an accident is enough stress without having to worry about the car repairs and Don's has always made this part pretty painless. Latest update: During the big storm in December, I was broadsided and my Escape totaled. I bought another Escape and it needed some work so I took it to Don's. They knew it was an "out of pocket" repair, so they did right by me and it looks like new. Hit n Run and left with a dent on the bumper. Went into Don's expecting to get a quote, and on inspection of my car they gave me two options. One: Fully fix the dent, scratches and paint and likely pay the $500 insurance deductible and my insurance pay the rest. OR option two which was to have one of the technicians heat up the bumper, pop out the dent and buff it out for FREE! When my fixed car pulled up after a short 10 minutes, it looked amazing. They even noticed that my brake light needed to be replaced and took care of it and sent me off with a smile. I was so happy I gave the guy a hug. Still in disbelief that such kindness and generosity in this world still existed. Would recommend this place to anyone who wants honest guys and great work. read more

I've been meaning to write this review for months now. And honestly, unless an experience is extraordinary, I almost NEVER write reviews, but these guys deserve it 100%. I had just moved into an apartment down the street and as I pulled into my tiny San Francisco garage for the first time, I badly scraped the side of the car and tore the rear view mirror off. The side of the car was dented, the paint from the garage was ground into my paint job, and my mirror was literally hanging on by a thread. I sent requests for quotes to several body shops in the area, and Don's responded within minutes. The team was incredibly understanding and told me to bring it in right away for a free estimate. They took a look and after I told them I just needed a quick fix (it's an old beat up car anyway, so I just wanted the mirror attached and the damage minimized), they told me "no problem, come back in an hour." When I returned, they had reattached my mirror, hammered the dent out, and polished all of the garage's pain out of my paint job. And guess what... they did it for free!!! They wouldn't let me pay, and assured me it was quick, easy, and no problem at all. I was absolutely blown away by their generosity. I owe them far more than this long overdue review. This place makes me wish that the Mack truck that smashed into my car (and 9 others in my neighborhood) had just totaled it. I probably would've gotten a car faster that way. I took my car in to Don's Auto Body on 9/14/07 after it got smashed on the driver's side by a Mack truck that got "lost" in my neighborhood. They estimated the car would be ready for pickup on 10/18/07. I sighed, signed the form that gave them the OK (and the instructions to update me via email with photos every 3 days), and let them go to work. I got a couple emails with photos of the repair in progress, but then it randomly stopped. For three weeks. On 10/17 they called me to tell me that my car wouldn't be ready on the 18th, and the reason they weren't updating me was because the person who does that was "on vacation." The car was ready a week later. When I went to pick up my car, it looked like someone had sprayed white dots all on the roof, the driver's side, the trunk, and the windshield. Also, there was a huge spot on the roof that wasn't even painted. They then took another week to fix all that. And even then, they didn't get it all. The women who work there were nice enough and apologized profusely about the paint, but I have to say, the work was pretty terrible. If Honda recommends this place, DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE. You might as well just call it in stolen, blow it up, and claim the insurance. read more

I don't know which was worse, getting rear ended at 30 miles per hour or the SHIT work these losers did on my new car. Somehow 2 1/2 weeks morphs into 4 weeks. I was referred to Don's for car painting services by SF Honda. I made an appointment with a representative of Don's to meet at SF Honda. When I arrived, the individual was not there. As a result, I then had to drive to Don's main location. I waited at least 15 minutes to have a consultation. Colin, the employee I spoke with and whom evaluated my car, told me that he would call me within a week to set up an appointment. After two weeks without hearing from Colin, I called Don's directly asking for an update. They told me that Colin would get back to me. I still haven't heard anything and it has now been almost 4 weeks. read more

Overall body work was great but I was alarmed by the business practices. I received a preliminary estimate of repairs. I signed off and authorized work. Then - The actual bill went up 35% and was flirting with the value of the car which in most cases would total the car out. My rep quickly explained to me the difference between a preliminary estimate and a Bill. Long story short they never uploaded the preliminary estimate to my initial insurance company. To sum it up. I feel like I paid the value in my car in repairs to Don's Auto body. They did a great job of fixing the car but overall business procedure was less than sub standard. If your looking for an autobody to trust I'd go elsewhere but that is just me. read more

Quality of work was OK but 8 days to replace a door and fix a dent? Original estimate 5 days. Dropped off on a Monday then called on Friday to see about picking it up. Wasn't ready. "Ready on Tuesday. Is that a problem?" Would it matter? I mean, you have my truck sans driver's side door. Tuesday: "Not ready today, you can pick it up tomorrow afternoon" Finally got the call that it was ready Wednesday at 4:15. At least I didn't have to worry about parking it in the neighborhood for a week and a half. Made me reconsider the need to have a vehicle in SF. LOL. read more

I took my car in for an estimate and I while I was waiting, I saw one of their guys accidentally push a cart into my car, causing another dent. I ran over and pointed out the dent to the guy doing the estimate. He pretended he had no idea what I was talking about. I pointed to the dent and he said 'I don't see it.' He didn't see it? It's not like it was something ethereal; it was a dent and I pointed to the guy who did it. I asked to speak with a manager of some sort, but they continued to pretend like the dent wasn't there. I took pictures and planned to make it a police matter but I've been told it's my word against theirs. What scumbags. UPDATE: they never acknowledged responsibility but did manage to talk with my insurance company about it. So it got recorded as ANOTHER incident with another $500 deductible. Can't say enough nice things about this place. My car is pretty old, and there was a leak on the passenger side door that let in water whenever it rained. I took it to my dealership, and they quoted me $800+ to fix it or that I was better off buying a new car. I took it to Don's instead. They spent time checking out my car and figured out what was actually causing the issue. They subsequently fixed it quickly & simply within 2 hours, and only charged me a fraction of what my dealership quoted. They were also incredibly kind and professional. Thank you! read more

Had to deal with a hit and run for my parked car. :( No worries though since I have AAA insurance. When I called in my claim, Don's was one of the first AAA approved places they recommended. They would be providing a rental car for the duration of the repairs so I had no hesitation about brining in my car right before Thanksgiving. When I got there, Daryl quickly provided the estimate and I felt comfortable not getting a second opinion. AAA was going to cover anything after my deductible so I was happy to have found a repair shop that was friendly. Many days later, and well into December, I got my car back. The work on the driver door and the paint was well done. I was extremely pleased with the quality of work. That is, until I tried using the native GPS one day and discovered the annoying voice that used to order/instruct me where to go no longer was audible. She had been muted. I instantly remembered all those instances when I screamed and drove around in agony after failed driving instructions from her. I was filled with regret. Was she mad a me? I'm sorry! I brought the car back to Don's and they couldn't figure it out. They called up the Toyota dealership on Van Ness and through an agreement with them I was able to bring my car there at no cost and have them repair it. The only problem was that this time I didn't get a rental car so it was quite inconvenient. Oh, and I thought it was cool for them to send me an email of the status of repairs midway through. That was an added piece of customer service that not everyone provides. read more

I have been going to post on these guys for a couple years now. So that is how much of an impression they made on me. Was out for pride a 2009. Stayed at hotel and was parked on street. Get up to go home..windows smashed out of car as well as others along the block. Brought it in and they quoted me a price and it would take a day to get it. They worked to see if insurance would pay for it. Just a very helpful bunch of people. Well an hour later they called with a window at discounted price and was able to be on our way. I've been to Don's twice in the past 18 months, and while I hopefully won't go there again, very much appreciate the customer service. Having my boyfriend scrape my car in his garage was the last thing I needed to deal with two week before moving half-way around the world to London. I'm slammed at work, and spending the morning at an auto body shop could have been a pain, but instead they did whatever they could to make it a nice experience. When the wi-fi wouldn't work they happily set me up in the back room so I could deal with an unexpected work emergency, and had cookies and coffee on hand, which kept me pacified. All of the people who work there are nice, personable, and do what they can to make an annoying situation painless. read more

(I know... what's up w/ these CA drivers?!) Both times, I've brought my car to Don's Auto Body and have always left very satisfied w/ the repair work and their customer service. Don's is great. I came in frustrated after being backed into (and it was a hit and run!), and the service was fast and friendly. They really run a tight ship - not the typical mechanic where there is one guy there. They had about half a dozen staff, just at the front office, and were able to help me right away. Better yet - there was another fix on my car that they could do in five minutes, and they decided not to charge for it. Now THAT is how you keep a customer! Let's just hope I don't have to go back any time soon :-) But if I do, I know I'll have a great experience. read more

Honesty. Isn't that what you hope for most when you bring your car in somewhere? Though I can jump my car and change my oil, I know very little about cars and could easily be convinced to do unnecessary or expensive work. Today, Colin encouraged me to NOT have work done and actually showed me a few pointers for so I could fix the scrapes and scratches on my leased car myself. And then he removed a bunch of them for me, for FREE. Oh, and they were able to squeeze me in just an hour after I called = awesome. The disparity in the reviews here is interesting. Fortunately, my experience with Don's was generally a good one. In early 2007, An SUV driver too busy talking on the phone to notice that traffic had stopped on a freeway exit piled into my low-mileage 2001 Civic and decimated the trunk and rear of the car. It was lucky that there were no passengers in the back seat. The car was close to being declared "totalled" as the repair estimate was over $8000. Don's staff worked with the other driver's insurance company to get the repairs approved, which saved me having to spend $4000+ to replace the car. My car was returned to me when promised and looked fine; if you didn't know otherwise, you couldn't tell it had been smashed just a month before. Over a year later, I've got no complaints with the quality of the work or my experience with Don's. However, if I was paying out of my own pocket, I might consider another body shop. read more

I've been to Don's twice. No one ever wants to go to a body shop. It means something is wrong with your car. Car problems absolutely SUCK! Fortunately, the people and quality of work done at Don't is absolutely 100% top notch. I would, without hesitation, refer a friend or family member to Don's for body work. I'll try to keep my reasons brief... 1. The women in the front office are amazingly kind, helpful, and extremely knowledgeable. They were so nice and honest with me. They are nothing less than professional. 2. Both times I had to visit Don's, I was given a reasonable quote and timeline for when my car would be fixed and the cost. Both times, I paid the quoted price and my car was ready two days early the first time and right on time the second time. 3. The quality of the work done on my car was fantastic! The first time, a Yellow Cab smashed the driver's side of my little Honda Civic. It looked like new when the work was done. The second time, a suburban housewife who doesn't know how to drive in the city changed lanes right into me scratching my driver's side panels and knocking my rearview side mirror off. Don's fixed that problem in one day, and the work was perfect! I never thought I'd have to write about or recommend a body shop. Yet I am happy to write about Don's due to the work done for my car and the excellent customer service I received. I hope to never see them again, but if I have to, I know my car, finances, and time will be in good hands. read more

I had a scraped and partially detached bumper and came in for an estimate this morning. The estimate I received from another body shop in SF quoted me at $1100, suggesting I needed the entire bumper replaced. And they have a 5* rating on Yelp. Suffice to say, I was prepared and ready to spend. When Cynthia looked at it, she had one of her staff members attempt to fix it right in front of me. He pulled out some tools, popped it back into place and they wished me well, all free of charge. I was shocked. Cynthia mentioned that it's all about people and relationships when you're in business nearly 40 years and that they strive to do right by their customers day in and day out. Don's Autobody on Clement and on Bush were referred to me by a very reliable source. I called on the phone to ask about an appointment because I heard they are a very busy place. I was given a time to come that would be realistic to when they could actually look at my T-bird. Immediately I was greeted and smiles around from the Staff. Nancy, Colin, Meghan, Jeff and Darryl--all very nice people. What would normally have cost me a great deal of money--they were able to track down parts and accessories that were reconditioned or used--reason being it's a 1996 vehicle. A slight problem was almost immediately dealt with, since some of electrical work was done by another shop. However, at Don's you have experts, not just in Autobody. They know something about everything. My trouble was shot to holes and I had my car the next morning. So when I went in, I had a few things I wanted done. All in all, it would have cost me about 2,200-2,500.00 (ODM was replaced). I walked out the door under 1500.00. That's a savings and by today's standards A GREAT DEAL. I parked my boyfriend's car on Bush near Don's overnight and left the lights on, so I found it dead in the morning. I walked into the garage and asked an employee for help (didn't catch his name, but he had longish hair and blue eyes). I couldn't have asked for better service from Collin and the team at Don's. My mini cooper convertible was vandalized while parked on the street (canvas top slashed in a few places - sniff, sniff). My insurance provider, AAA, recommended Don's as one of their "certified shops" so I was off to see them within 30 minutes. By the time I arrived they were ready and waiting for me, had already spoken with AAA and arranged my rental car service with Hertz. Not only that, the office staff were so kind and welcoming after a stressful morning of discovering my car like that! I dropped off on a Wednesday (late morning) and had my car back on Friday afternoon, and it truly looked better than ever. In addition to a new soft top/back window, they cleaned and detailed both interior and exterior to be sparkling and perfect. I am so, so impressed with their work and turnaround time. Their relationship with Hertz is also a huge benefit - it is so convenient to be able to drop off the rental right in their garage when you pick up your car. I am a very satisfied customer after having work done on my Honda Insight at Don's. I side swiped a pole and did some considerable damage to the driver door and mirror of the car. I received estimates from several shops but the decision to go to Don's was very easy. The person answering the phone when I first inquired was incredibly helpful and scheduled an appointment for an estimate. The estimate is what really wowed me. They took the time to ask me questions about what I wanted, options and costs. I let them know I couldn't justify an insurance claim for such a stupid personal error and that I planned on paying for the repair on my own. A tech then joined us and explained my options (repair or re-skin the door) I told them my plans and expectations and we decided to re-pair and leave the front fender and bumper on during the repair. This saved me an incredible amount of money and it's an Insight that has lived its whole life in the city the rest of the car isn't perfect. As if this was not enough they were able to source a used mirror for me painted the same color as the car and save me 50% what a new un-painted one from Honda would have cost. They knew the car was in there on a tight schedule as I dropped it off early in the week and would be leaving town for a while at the end. There was a slight issue with parts and the car would not be done in time for me to pick up prior to leaving. They were very gracious and kindly stored my car for me while I was gone at no cost. Upon arrival to pick the car up they held true to their estimate almost to the dollar and the car was perfect! I am a stickler for wavy/bad body work and after a few days of looking at it in different lights I can't tell there is any filler in the door at all. The car is a heavy metalic light silver color and they did an incredible job of blending it as well. Also they washed and vacuumed my car for me, coming home to a clean repaired car after my trip made my day. Was it cheap? No... Body work is not cheap and good body work especially does not come cheap. However they did everything in their power to control costs knowing I would be paying for it myself and explained every outcome of each very well. Great experience. read more

I got in a car crash and rear ended someone and the hood of my car was completely destroyed to the point where my front bumper blew off. I was worried that my car would have to be totaled. The accident was frightening but what was potentially more frightening was the prospect of being a single girl in a car repair shop. I was almost certain I'd be taken advantage of...financially, that is. I have insurance through USAA so I called them to file a claim and they recommended Don's. It's close enough to my house and reviews on Yelp seemed good enough. In the hour between calling AAA to tow my car and arriving at Don's the front desk already had my claim on file. They also offered to call Enterprise to help arrange my rental car. George Bold was great to work with - very friendly, professional, and constantly kept me in the loop about my repairs. They managed to make the car look brand new and all I had to pay was my deductible. I would definitely go back for any future repairs...hopefully I don't have to though. read more

My Black Subaru wagon was vandalized and almost every panel was "keyed" Most people may not know this but a Black Paint job is extremely hard to match especially when there is "Pearl" in it. Well these guys worked with my insurance and the job came out perfect. I'm very picky and couldn't find anything to complain about. The estimator Collin Wong took care of everything. I took my Audi A4 to Don's in October 2013 to have some major work done on my car. I absolutely loved my experience with the team at Don's and would recommend them to anyone. While I hope to never need their services again, I would use them again without hesitation. A few things stand out about my experience. - Jesse managed the entire process for me for Don's. She was extremely professional, friendly and knowledgable. She knew her stuff, and made me feel extremely confident in their ability to bring by car back to the way it looked before the accident - I received an status update via email, which included photos of my car, every week. This doesn't sound like such a big deal. But, it was! I never had to wonder what was going on with my car, or if they were having any issues - My car was completed not only on-schedule, but a few days early. - Most importantly, the work they did was flawless. I just got back from Don's shop having had a fender bender repaired; my car was delivered ahead of schedule and every issue and concern fully addressed. They took the insurance photos, dealt with all the paperwork, summoned me a rental car, and in minutes, had me on my way. I had asked if they might advise on several other small scratches and dings and not only did they offer candid, helpful advice, they did a lot of polishing and buffing, all for no charge; they even shined my tires! I've been a customer at Don's for 14 years with two cars and again today was bowled over by the quality and care of the work and the professionalism and efficiency of their process.
