Brought in my 1965 Jeep Truck to George and team and they are great, they were able to fix my carburetor issues which turned out to be a fuel pump and found the right parts for the job. The shop is organized and thorough and took care of my brake issues and made a solid recommendation for investing in an upgrade to that system as well. A friend recommended Don's Automotive when I was looking for a mechanic in the area. After running a diagnostic myself and doing my own research, I realized I would be best off getting an additional test ran on the EVAP system of my car. I called ahead to Don's and a mechanic answered, telling me he was not able to give me the price of the test, but I should come in. I had already received a few quotes in the range of $75 - $150, so I was expecting this to fall somewhere in that range. When I got there, the mechanics told me their diagnostic would run $220. No follow up statement as to that also including the cost of repair (as other "expensive" shops explained). They kind of just shrugged their shoulders when I told them what I was quoted from other shops. I completely understand the mentality of "you get what you pay for" but this was practically 3 time the cost quoted by other mechanics for a fairly straight forward diagnostic test. I'm sure they do great work based on other Yelp reviews and word of mouth, but there are dozens of mechanics in the Long Beach area willing to do basic testing without ripping a customer off. But they deserve an extra star for at least being straight forward with their price, and not surprising me with the bill later. read more

Great shop. Honest shop. A couple of weeks ago a Out of state friend came to visit California. While driving he heard a noise and soon after the check engine light came on. He stopped at a shop and was told that it was a mass flow sensor. So he drove like that to California. With low power but he made it. ( no turbo). They wanted to visit Disneyland so he asked if I knew any shop that I would trust. Without any hesitation I told him about Don's Automotive. So we took the car there while they went to Disneyland and George and his staff took care of the car within the same day even before they got out of the park. On the recommendation of our neighbors, Dons Automotive recently took care of my wife's VW that had a engine check light come on. They did a diagnostic on the engine and solved the problem. The repair bill was very fair. One thing I always look for at a repair facility is how well the shop area is kept. Dons shops area is neat and well organized another plus. My wife has been ripped off by several other well known auto repair shops..can I say the one at Cherry and Bixby Rd. not to name the place, but you know the "TIRE PLACE". NO HOT RODS OR CUSTOMS......... They may be a good place to take your car for light mechanic work. Oil changes brakes ect. They do not work on customs or hot rods. They are not problem solvers and don't have the depth or knowledge. If you don't know say I don't know. Don't take a customers money and then say I don't know! read more

We used the services of Don'a automotive again just recently for our Jeep Cherokee. It was running really badly, and even cut out and stopped a few times. Eventually, we had to get it towed in, and they recommended a new alternator, which seems to have done the trick. I've been having a problem diagnosing an issue with my van and even though the issue wouldn't replicate so I could not actually be diagnosed they charged me less than they originally quoted me and and told me that if I could get the problem to replicate itself that I can come back and see them. I was looking for a good and honest mechanic and I have found one. I had three recommendations from friends about Don,s all positive. George was very nice and personable. He was very knowledgeable and informative . He handled my cooling system problem and my trany oil and filter . Looked at my side door locking issue and some electrical at no charge. Then I had him trace a problem with my trailer wiring and he spent way more time on it than he charged and would not except my offer of more $$$$$ and only charges me for 2 hours . Prices were way better than Chevy Dealer and also service, I could not even tell some body had been under the hood , good clean work. Fair prices quality work great people. I love Don's. Of course, like anyone, I hate spending money when my car breaks down. It seems like I'm throwing away money even though I know I need to do it. So, I went to Don's on recommendation of a co-worker. They are very honest and fairly priced and do excellent and efficient work. I'm usually a good judge of character and I immediately felt I could trust them and that is a lot to say for a mechanic. I had to get a new fuel pump, relay and fuel tank and George called around and got the best prices on parts (he even found a used fuel tank so I wouldn't have to pay for a new one) and gave me a really fair price. They fixed my car in a couple days and two weeks later, it is fixed well and running smoother than ever! Yeah for George and all you guys over there! You are my new mechanic for life! read more

What started out as a joyous afternoon of house hunting almost turned into an utter and complete disaster. I have been considering a move to the Long Beach area and had just left the listing address of an incredibly deceitful "3 bedroom Spanish Charmer" in a neighborhood I shall now refer to as "Dogville" (due to the Pit Bulls running freely in the street). It was then that the horrid ticking sound first occurred: tick-tick, tick-tick, tick-tick, tick-tick. As I am no stranger to road hazards I knew immediately that my tire had been breached by a foreign object. I waited for my car to pull in one direction so that I would know which tire was flat...but nothing happened. The annoying ticking persisted. I found a gas station somewhere on the periphery of Signal Hill and then caught a glimpse of a bolt the size of a baby's fist embedded in my front right tire. DAMN! The house of cards that were my plans for the day were becoming increasingly unstable. With gas stations no longer what they were, the staff at a nearby Chevron station were useless. With no Yelp Tire Centers in sight it appeared only a matter of moments before my Saturday afternoon deflated before my eyes. Of course I can put a spare on, that's not the point. I was dressed for anything but roadside maintenance. No extra shirt, no hand towels and no way around the fact that I was expected to be so fresh and so clean for a dinner reservation just a short while later. All I could do was curse "Dogville". Then like a rainbow on my horizon a Good Samaritan witnessing my predicament offered a way out. It seems she knew of an automotive center just a few minutes away. Not only did she provide the name and address of the establishment, she called ahead to make sure they could take care of my tire. It was 3:25pm and Don's Automotive closed at 4. I was nervous about making it in time but somewhat optimistic that my poor tire would hold out just long enough. Before I could properly thank her, my Good Samaritan was off. I arrived at a slightly hidden industrial strip ten short minutes later. At 3:35pm I was face to face with Don himself. Don is no nonsense. "What's the problem" was his greeting. His well kept shop was working in fifth gear when I pointed to my pathetic excuse for a tire. "Wow, I'm surprised it's still inflated" were his words. I asked if he could patch it and he looked at me slightly annoyed and replied "NO". "That damn bolt is too huge for a patch, we'll have to plug it." I finally exhaled and fought off the tear of joy trapped somewhere in the upper regions of my eyeball. At 3:45pm I was told my car was ready..."That'll be 20 bucks". As always, I requested a receipt. My request produced a slightly demeaning glance from no-nonsense Don, but he quickly fulfilled my humble bookkeeping need. I thanked Don profusely for saving my day and he shrugged it off as it to say "what did you expect?" I can't vouch for anything but the no-nonsense approach my humble tire received but this is one place I would return to in a heartbeat. read more

Took my 1984 El Camino there to have starter replaced and to troubleshoot why car keeps shutting off a week later George tells me car is ready he replaced the starter and found nothing wrong with engine as to why it keeps shutting off said car runs fine. I paid $400 for the work and drove off one hour later car has shut down on the 22 freeway and I am stranded. One hour later!!!! read more

In today's world finding a mechanic who is trusting was very difficult. what I found in these gentlemen, was nothing less than God's Blessings. Okay, they treated my family and I extremely warm and gracious, but the bottom line, they are good mechanics and great hearts and spirits. Recently, a rock hit my front windshield and put a crack in it. I called them, they gave me a dependable service who also treated me with love and kindness. We took my daughter's thirteen year old Honda Civic in because she was reporting some rattling in the engine and squeaking in the brakes. Thought we were in for a major car repair bill. Dropped the car off while they ran some diagnostics. Within an hour, they called me back and said that they had driven the car on city streets as well as the freeway but heard no sounds that caused concern. They could have easily come up with a list of things that needed to be repaired on a 13 year old car, but they said everything was fine. I expected to pay $75 or so for the diagnostic test, but when we went to pick up the car, they didn't charge us anything! It is hard to find an honest mechanic and should I need one in the future, I know exactly where I will go. Thanks Don's! read more

Alright, let's get down to the core of why you should not take your car here. I quit taking my german cars to any shop years ago because what I witnessed made me shake my head in disbelief and take my precious vehicles back to my own garage (I'd ask to stand on the floor of the shop and watch them work on my car). Since moving to California, it seems that I cannot get away from this trend of almost every shop being a hack job. Here's the situation. My best friend from school, living out here, has an SC400 and the water pump failed (I was in the car when it failed. Puking coolant, overflow tank purged and the pump bearing seized audibly). I was recommended George's shop by a different friend. My best friend has a Black Lexus SC400 with the 1UZ-FE V8, non-VVT from 1993. I was told that George had done Lexus work before, so I recommended my best friend to come here (we were otherwise going to replace his water pump-which is what had failed-by ourselves, except I was struggling to find a garage out here in this godforsaken state - being from the east coast puts me in a completely different set of standards in terms of space to work on cars, but I digress) And oh, should we have just done this ourselves. Good lord. We took the car in on August 2nd of this year, 2018. What's usually recommended, because I happen to actually know how to replace a water pump and timing belt as I've done it on both my 944 that requires special belt tensioner setting tools as well as my passat which requires the entire front clip to be removed, is to replace all hardware fastening the pump to the block, replace whichever gasket is used from the OEM (fiber or silicone RTV whatever the manual specifies), replace the timing belt since you're in there AND REPLACE ALL ECCENTRIC ROLLERS / BELT TENSIONERS TO ENSURE THE ENGINE DOES NOT JUMP TIMING AND TORQUE WATER PUMP BOLTS IN A CIRCULAR PATTERN ACCORDING TO LEXUS REPAIR DOCUMENTATION. Well, it seems that George's special "Timing belt and water pump kit" includes none other than one water pump and one goddamn belt. Because low and behold, the engine did jump timing - My friend and I took the SC400 to a JDM specialty shop where the diagnosis (which cost nearly as much to correct as George's shoddy water pump job) found that hardware was either missing or not torqued properly and tensioners/belt rollers had not been replaced. George, you're goddamn lucky the 1UZ is a non-interference engine because otherwise we'd have several bent valves and possibly a trashed cylinder head or two and trashed piston crowns over a problem that you created. The car went in for a water pump replacement, and not too long after jumped timing. (Monday the 15th of October, this year) To be quite honest, it's pretty pathetic that a college kid from the east coast with a 300-piece toolset from wal-mart and a trunk full of axle stands and jacks has more common sense, capability and concern for fixing someone else's car than an actual certified repair shop, but as I said before, you really can't trust any of these hack repair shops with anything. It's not rocket science. Diagnose the problem, Read the Bentley manual specified pages, Go on ETKA or any corresponding OEM illustrated parts catalog (which these repair shops actually have access to) and order the specific parts based on part numbers, and order all corresponding torque-to-yield or specialty hardware to be replaced, remove all parts in order, clean all mating surfaces, install new parts with proper new hardware and loctite when called out by the repair manual and reassemble in the reverse order of disassembly and use a damn torque wrench. I've replaced timing belt and water pumps (balance shaft belts too on the 944, of which I actually corrected a previous shop's mistake as well) and driven them for tens of thousands of miles, across states without ANY issues IN MY DAMN GARAGE. George's quality workmanship didn't even last two months. Congrats, George. My best friend wants his money back and I personally want you to pay some goddamn attention next time you play with timing belts because next time it will most likely be an interference engine any you'll end up costing someone thousands of dollars in repair bills in addition to leaving them stranded on the side of the road. Yes this review is harsh, and no I'm not apologizing for anything. This is a fundamental core function of any automotive repair shop (Timing belt/waterpump servicing) and if a kid in his garage can do a better job than yourself as a qualified technician in an actual shop, then you need to check yourself and get your shit together. Unbelievable. We've got both your invoice in hand and the invoice from the shop that corrected your wonderful work, so if you want this review to go away, I suggest we discuss a refund for part or all of your work performed. read more

I paid a small fortune to have my thunderbird 390 motor to be freshened up. It took a lot longer then what was originally quoted. I was also was charged for taking up space while the car was not being worked on. The price when the car was "ready" was triple the amount of the original estimate. The distributor was making a ticking sound with the engine revs. I was told just "drive it and that it was fine, the motor ran good." Two days later the engine shut off. I had the distributor removed and the cam shaft gear was shredded. Causing material shavings to destroy my camshaft. I had no problems before with the distributor and camshaft prior to taking it in. Since all money was spent. I had to remove the camshaft myself. Took it in to show the shop what happened. They responded with that the gearing from the distributor didn't line up with the camshaft and this is why it broke. My question is why did they tell me it was 'done and to drive the car"?! They did not take any responsibility or offer any help. I was told " I am not buying you a new motor". Now I am left with trying to fix what could have been easily avoided in my eyes before the car even left the shop. Now I'm undoing all the work I had paid for. Total screwed. I wouldn't go back here even for an oil change. read more

George is the real deal, this guy is honest, straight forward and knows his trade. on my most recent experience I needed help to finish a control arm job on my Honda Pilot, where for some reason I just couldn't get the axle to engage. I decided to have it towed to his shop to prevent any damage, when we got there, the shop had just closed, luckily George was still there, he came out to greet us, went as far explaining what the problem was, and made time to fix it there on the spot, not only that but he even refused to take any money for it, the guy is just that good!!
