AAA assigned this auto-body shop for me after my car had been in an accident, and now, in the future, I'll request this shop, should I ever need body work done again. I dealt with Phil, who was personable, informative, direct, and honest. He seemed passionate about his work. On my way in and out, he called the rental car company to pick me up, and later, to pick up the car. It was all very easy. He made sure all my questions were answered and that I hadn't left anything behind in the car that I might need. I felt he was very thorough. I was told my car might be in the shop for two weeks but it was done in just over one week. It looks beautiful, drives great, and a small bit of touch-up paint was waiting for me when I picked it up. Not to mention, the inside of the car had been vacuumed and cleaned, which was really nice. I highly recommend this shop. read more

I don't think I can say enough good things about Don's autobody on Clement, and Phil in particular. My car was rear-ended and I brought it to Eric at All Speed Motors for an oil change. While I was there I asked if he could check out my rear bumper, and he referred me to Don's next-door. It turned out there was a lot of damage to the rear bumper. Phil printed out drawings from the Scion website that I could share with my insurance representative. This made the whole process of determining the cost of damage really easy to manage. They fixed the car quickly, detailed it, and they even left a little jar of paint that fit my car color in the car for me so I could touch things up later if I needed to. They were also really nice about trying to get the old bumper back from the junkyard, after we realized there was a sticker on it that we needed for parking. (The sticker was technically expired, which was why they hadn't checked with us before sending the bumper away). As luck would have it, we ended up getting rear-ended again within about a month. I had my car brought back to Don's, where it turned out after an inspection to be totaled. In 20 minutes, Phil was able to find the insurance representative for the other party, using only partial information I had gathered at the scene, something my own insurance representative hadn't been able to do in a week. He then called the other party's insurance company and arranged for me to have a free rental car while I shopped for a new car. Phil knows a lot people. He's been doing this a long time, and he seemed to actually care about what happened to me. He called me after he had arranged the rental car to make sure that everything had worked out okay. I've never had an experience like this in a car place, where someone hooked me up so quickly with the services that had others stumped. I will definitely go back when I need work on my car. read more

I scratched the paint on my fender and bumper along side of my house. (things happen, I was tired/distracted). No real dents but it looked pretty bad. I got a quote from another shop for $1800. I went to Don's and talked to Luis. He told me that if I wanted it "perfect" it would be around $1700 but if I just wanted it to be okay he had a solution...using a secret solution he basically wiped all the house paint off the car. It took a minute or so. It wasn't factory smooth but he turned a glaring paint scratch in to a minor ding that is barely noticeable. Thanks Luis. read more

(background info)....Some jack *** hit my car, I was pissed, had huge damage to the back of my car...called the dealer for recommendations for repair, and Don's on Clement came up..... Well, let me tell you, I couldn't have been happier! So, Bruce, the manager, is amazing. So calm and collected, very knowledgable with autos and insurance comapanies. So he estimated my damage, got the jack ***'s insurance to cut me a check for the work to be done. Two weeks later, the car is ready and Bruce had to call the insurance to get more money from them....nevertheless, he did it, and was successful, and now I have a perfect car once again, without a cent from my pocket! A great auto body place...especially during icky times of having a hurt car and needs of expert service and kindness throughout. read more

This place is great. Last month, a big Yukon truck backed into my Infiniti G35. Destroyed my grille, banged up the bumper, and pushed the hood in. Took my car here to get it fixed. They replaced my grille, bumper, and the hood. It took them exactly one week to fix everything up, and when I got my car back, it looked brand spanking new. The staff was great also. Peggy took care of me and she was real friendly and helpful. They even gave me a bottle of touch up paint. Hopefully, I won't have to come back, but if my car ever needs any body work done, I'll be returning to Don's. read more

I had a wonderful experience and superior service at Don's on Clement. I had been there several years ago with my Jeep Liberty and had a good experience, but this time, dealing with both of the ladies, Peggy and especially Jesse, the experience was the Best! My bumper on my Jeep Wrangler totally needed replacing ( my fault) and Jesse was so on her game with getting me one in a couple of days at a very reasonable price, no less! Not only that, they vacuumed my car and washed it, too! They genuinely care about the customers and truly believe in customer service, which, in this day and age, is rare! I can't write a review about the work being done because famous Phil wasn't interested in working on my vehicle. I read some pretty good reviews, and wanted to talk to them, especially since they are in my neighborhood. But the work I need done isn't some big money insurance claim. I had something small that needed being done, and I was quickly quoted a huge amount of money and told I would be better off going somewhere else. So I interpreted that as if you crashed your car and the insurance is going to take care of it then this is a good place to go, but if you have a small project (like fixing and painting a rusted area) then they don't want to bother with you. read more

Posting this one for my partner, who won't stop gushing at home about how awesome Don's is. Once again, Yelpers, thank you thank you thank you for helping me find Don's on Clement. If you are looking for an honest, reliable, customer-oriented neighborhood body shop that really goes above and beyond for you, Don's is it. And if you're looking beyond that for an incredibly patient, helpful, good-hearted, always-available, hardworking guy to help you out there, it doesn't get any better than Phil. A few weeks ago I got into my first bad car accident: a guy in a big old BMW backed out of his driveway without looking and hit my little Subaru. We exchanged insurance information and I (stupidly) didn't call the cops because nobody was hurt, neither car needed to be towed, and I didn't realize how bad the damage to my car really was. I shakily got myself home, dragged my honey out of bed, and looked up AAA network body shops on Yelp. Don's was nearby and had some good reviews, so I headed down there. I'm always wary of auto repair places because I don't know anything about cars and it would be ridiculously easy to take advantage of my ignorance... and even though I don't know anything about cars, I hate being treated like I'm an idiot as soon as they see that I'm female. With Phil, I never had to worry: he was patient, respectful, understanding, and if he thought I was stupid as heck (highly likely, considering that I forgot to call the police or do anything else I should have done under the circumstances and clearly had no clue what to do now) he didn't show it. Phil was able to help me right away. He got me on the phone with AAA and assured me that he'd take care of everything from then on. He "knows people," as he'll tell you, and he made phone calls to all of them. It turned out that I had liability insurance but not collision, so everything had to go through the other guy's company. Phil called agents at AAA (my insurance) and Farmer's (other guy's insurance) over and over, trying to get this taken care of. He talked to me several times a day for the first couple days and then every few days thereafter, making himself available by phone whenever I called to check in and always making me feel as if I was a high priority. When I worried that I was being an obnoxious, overanxious customer, Phil assured me that he ran this as a small neighborhood business and that his priority was making sure that I got the best service possible. When the other guy refused to return his insurance company's calls and it became clear that this wasn't going to be a cut-and-dried case, Phil called around and got me a half-price discount at a rental car company down the street. He let me keep my car in the shop while everything dragged on and on. So then it turned out that my 1995 Subaru is probably totaled, and that even if it's not fully totaled, it's not worth the cost of fixing it. He already knew that I couldn't afford to pay out of pocket, so the only profit he would get from this was if the insurance company accepted liability and paid him storage fees. And *still* he provided me with amazing customer service. He met with me twice at 6:30 a.m., the only time I could meet because public transit to my work required me to leave so early and get back so late.... before the shop had even opened. Within hours of being asked, he emailed the photos of my car to my insurance company *and* the other guy's, since my insurance agent hadn't sent the photos over to them. The other guy never made an official statement to his insurance company, so they refused to accept liability based only on my evidence. I have to go to small claims court to get this taken care of. When Phil found out that I didn't have a place to keep the car and that I'm leaving for a funeral out of state this week, he said he'd keep it there until I got back in town and could figure out someplace to keep it. I kept holding off on this Yelp review because I wanted to be able to tell the whole story of my experience at Don's on Clement. And it seemed too good to be true... is any business this focused on providing personal, customer-oriented, just plain *good* service anymore? During this whole ordeal -- even feeling burned by the other driver and the impersonal, bureaucratic insurance agencies and everything that kept getting worse -- I couldn't ever get too bitter because I kept marveling at my luck in finding an amazing business with a genuinely kind, service-oriented human face behind it. I'm really stuck on how to rate this place. If it were just for my first visit, then I would have said 4 or, if possible, 4.5 stars. See, some crazy lady decided to change lanes into my car in stopped traffic and damaged the side of my car. AAA insurance recommended Don's on Clement--they called quickly, got me in super fast, and although they needed to keep the car for a week, it worked out fine because I was out of town. When I went to pick up the car, however, the only thing I noticed at first was that all the smudges from the other car were not gone. So, instead of jumping in my car and leaving quickly, they had to re-buff them off. But, I figured, no big deal. Then, I got to work and realized that the back door handle was sitting in the middle of the backseat. I called Daryl, the manager guy, who told me that it was purely ornamental and the door works fine, but that he would order a new one and that, in a few days, I could stop by and he would simply pop it on and it would take 2 seconds. Except, he had some stipulations that I could only come earlier in the morning, which is near impossible for me. Then, I had a kid in my car who tried to get out on the side with the missing ornamental handle, and he was stuck--the door wouldn't open. So, I called Daryl who said, once he puts this handle back on, it will be fine. Well, it's my fault that it took me 6 weeks to get in there, but they are not open on weekends and I work in the east bay, so getting to a car place on a weekday morning is incredibly inconvenient when I have to leave early anyway for work. So, I went this morning and they put the handle on. I got in, tried to open it from the inside, and it didn't work. They took it upstairs, fixed it. And, even did me a favor and buffed up a side of the bumper that I had messed up a few weeks earlier. I guess my dilemma over the rating is that they were friendly, helpful, and efficient--except, they were so efficient that it seems they were careless and missed a lot of the details that, in the end, really are important. I shouldn't have had to point out, on my first visit, that they missed buffing part of the car. And, the handle shouldn't have been left off the back door. And, they should have at least tried to open the door when they popped it back in. So, maybe I'm not being as unfair as I originally felt I was by giving 3 stars....I'm so conflicted. read more

One of the BEST experiences I have ever had at an auto body shop. They are a friendly neighborhood shop that is very on top of their game. Extremely communicative and diligent in their work, they handled my SUV with the best of care and expertise. Jesse was a real peach to work with and made my experience here very pleasant. The only highlight of my experience with Don's - Clement was the ease of making an appointment for an estimate. This was for an insurance paid repair work for front/rear grill & bumper damage. I arrived 15 mins early and the first response was "you're early". My first clue should have been that the shop was deathly quiet at 2:45pm. After about 5 mins, Louis takes my info and begins the estimate process. After about 5 to 10-mins, he's done and goes over a couple of details. I tell him that I want to have the work done and figured I would hear back within 2 days as promised. After 2 days, nothing. I call my claims adjuster and she explains that as a CSAA-Approved facility, they must submit the paper work within 48-hrs. It's at the end of day 3 and still no word. I tell my claims adjuster that I will go to another autobody shop and that I am not happy that there was no communications from Don's. CSAA noted my complaint and said they will review. I also sent a note to Don at Don's Autobody website to let him know what happened since I thought he would be interested to know that his Clement St shop lost a $7k repair order. Of course, I didn't hear from Don either. I intended to have my repairs done at Don's and gave no indications to the contrary so I guess they have so much business they can afford to have me go elsewhere. Btw - the other autobody shop (F LoFrano & Sons) that I had the work done at was buzzing with activity and the estimate process took a full hour because the estimator was thorough and I received the full estimate before I left. I'm much happier and 100% satisfied that I got the work done there. Guess things happen for a reason. read more

My car was sideswiped just before Christmas but the woman who did it said she would pay for the damage. I took it by Don's a day later. Phil looked at it and said $3200. he also told me people who promise to pay change their minds when confronted with the real cost. He was right. She did. My insurance carrier, USAA, gave Don's high marks so I went back and turned the car over to them. They matched three panels and replaced the drive's door panel so perfectly that when the car was buffed up, it looked like new! Amazing job by wonderful people. No one likes to deal with the resuls of an accident but if you have to, find Phil at Don's on Clement. He is pro and so are the others who work there. Peggy is always helpful and the guys who repair cars are direct and polite. read more

I would give this place 6 stars if I could. In all things I make buying decisions based on service and Don's has some of the best service I have ever had in SF. I have gotten to know Steve, the office manager and appraiser, over the past year or so because I live right around the corner and always see him while walking my dog. He is a dog lover and always invites us into his office for a free Milkbone when we are passing by. Because he is such a nice guy I took my car here after getting into a minor scrape. The appraisal was reasonable, and Seve even worked with me to develop some other options in case I wanted to get some work done without going whole hog to fix all panels which were damaged. I cannot recommend this place enough. Getting your car fixed is always scary because you never know what really needs to be done or how much it should cost. To me, Don's is a trustworthy organization and you cannot put a high enough price on honesty and service in this business. Highly recommended. read more

Sadly, I will never do business with Don's again after a recent, fairly unbelievable encounter. Recently, I had given away a stack of boxes on Craigslist in the free section, figuring I would help someone who needed them rather than throw them out. Apparently, these boxes found their way into Don's recycling dumpster who lives down the street. How do I know? Because the lady that works there looked at the address label (they were my old amazon boxes), buzzed my building, screamed at my neighbor, and then I received a $400 (!!!!) citation in the mail for "dumping my boxes in their recycle bin." Had they been reasonable and rational (and talked to the right person), i would've happily taken the boxes out myself and thrown them in my own dumpster. You see, at my office, I have two huge dumpsters that go mostly unused and have more than enough space for me to dispose of these and more. I have absolutely no reason to go out of my way to throw it in theirs. Yet there they went, chewing out strangers without even an attempt to be rational, then cost me the $400 in fines to boot. They also failed to realize that I was a (former) customer when screaming at my neighbors through our gate. Way to go, Don's. Last time you get my business. If they handle something as petty as recycling in this manner, imagine how they'll handle you if you have an issue with their work. I personally wont wait to find out. read more

this is slightly biased because don's didn't work on my car, but on his car... but from an outsider's perspective, here goes me rambling aways ... if and when i can, i love researching to help people, whether they get hurt physically, emotionally or whatevers ... so yea ... his car had a leetle boo boo, and after calling AAA, they referred me to don's. so what's the first thing i do? yelp don's ... i see there were only 2 reviews, so i'm wondering, is it truly worth it? after doing my own research, and after finding out that there were plenty of don's throughout the city, i figured it was a worthy cause ... now, if it was MY car, i'd prolly have checked out 2 places for quotes to compare, but he had to get this car fixed right away, so there was no time to waste ... after picking up his car last night, it was brand spankin new, and actually he was pleased... so you know it was done in a fashionable manner ... driving from the marina, cutting through the presidio, we were able to take down 25th down to the richmond ... very nifty ... close, and in a residential area ... anywys ... it was a few weeks ago when i went him to get his car fixed... the service couldn't be any more better .. we spoke with PHIL, a sweet older gentleman, a native from SF, and he was extremely friendly, helpful, and honest ... ladies, don't be overwhelmed when you go to a body shop, but who am i to say, because i'd be frantically panicking if some shit happened and i wouldn't know what to do with my car and such. shit, i can't even unscrew a light bulb. LOL, i kid. first thing phil asked was what insurance carrier we carried. he recommended us to go through AAA, that way, we would get a loaner and that they would process the paperwork through their computer system... but it was a leeetle minory boo boo that he didn't want to go through his insurance and was willing to pay it out of his own pocket ... phil, then, goes around and inspects the vehicle, with his mini flashflight checking if there were any other boo boos... we passed his lil mini (free of charge. lol) inspection, and finally go into his office. he inputs all the car info ... mebe because i never really paid attention, but it was pretty neat to see how there was a computer database for each car possible. by inputting the car model,year, and such, he was able to pull up an approximate date when the car was to be completed and the costs and such ... at least you know Don's (well, in this case, Phil's) not pulling numbers out of his ass. i even told him about the dents i had in my car. since i didn't have my car off hand, i kinda told him what the dents looked like. he said, it wasn't really worth coming to a body shop and gave me a number of someone, but then again, he said, to bring in my car just in case...and i did, few days later ... again, when i came 2nd time around, he said not to waste my money at a body shop and to call the number... hey, now, i like that honesty... some people would automatically take you in and charge you a fortune... another thing i really liked about Don's is the fact how i didn't feel pressured ... and seriously, as a girl, there's really nothing to worry about... phil's extremely patient and really gets with you step by step, exactly what we ladies need when the boys aren't around ... but of course, i ll be the first to admit, i'd still drag a guy along with me so i know what i'm getting myself into. hours of operation: 7-5pm MON-FRI, no weekends ... booo. until 3pm to get estimates until 4:30 for pick up // deliveries ... oh and yea, they will give you a ride home, if you're within distance .. read more

Ok, I have to say I went into Don's Autobody with high hopes and high expectations after having read many positive Yelp'ing. First off, no body likes going into a autobody store but its a necessary evil after any accident. My claims adjuster also recommended Don's and was good friends with Phil (mgr) since he once worked his own autobody store. I also shared a common hobby with Phil and we chatted up our common interests. Things were very pleasant when I dropped off my Range Rover. However, 8 business days later, I picked up my car. Phil shows you the paint job inside the garage with little or no natural light so you can't see and imperfections if there was any. You'll have to wait unitl you drive away. I immediately tried my side mirror to see if it was working. It was not functioning properly and vibrated at high speeds. Instead of taking responsisbility, Phil blamed the motor inside the mirror housing but said he would check it to make sure it wasn't their installation mistake. It was determine it was their mistake, they did not fasten the mirror correctly. Next came the big one. The next day I attempted to fill gas but the gas cap did not open. With a good yank, I was able to open it and fill gas. Upon closing it, it now was shut permanantly. Thank god I was not going to drive more than 300 miles over the weekend until Monday morning. There was also tremendous amounts of dust inside the cabin and inside the vents. My passengers and I got dust on our clothes and enhaled the dust upon turning on the air conditioning. There was also a tremendous amounts of yellow tape all over the door panels and sills there technician forgot to remove. Plastic trim parts were not replaced properly and came off easily. No disrespect to other less expensive autos but I sincerely hoped Phil would have better quality control since this was not your average Camry or Accord. Phil should have given his "expertise" in looking over the car before letting me have the car back. I thought Phil was cool and he knew much I appreciated his attentiveness in the beginning. I even gave the dude a t-shirt with our logo which he seemed to enjoy. I am only giving don's 2 stars instead of one because Phil did fix all of the problems in one day but I had to go back. Word of ADVISE....check, recheck, all working parts and review any paint job in outside in the daylight BEFORE driving away. It could save you lots of aggravation and headaches. I took my car to Don's because it was close to where I live. I figured.. what could go wrong. Phil handled my car repair which was basically fender bender and a respray of the bumper which came to the tune of 1.6k. Good thing I have two way insurance! Anyway, I got my car back in the agreed time period. They did an okay job. It wasn't the greatest job because there was some over spray with the clear coat on the windows and on other parts of the car. I just used a clay bar to remove it myself. I've had gotten into other accidents before and every body shop has some sort of over spray. I just drive a 6 year old subaru so I didn't care that much about how great the paint job was but it's passable. If I had something nicer, I'd be more discriminating and probably take it somewhere else. If you have just a regular car, I recommend this place. If you're super finicky about your car, I'd try something else. read more
