I caution if you're a woman and choose to get your brakes replaced here. Or anyone who has limited knowledge about cars. I was looking to support a neighborhood brake shop and move on from Toyota. I made an appointment for a brake pad change with a timeline where it had to be finished because I had another appointment that after. The timeline was okayed by the owner. Brought the truck in and instead, the owner ended up ordering new rotors without calling me. I called to check on the status because it was close to my needing to leave for my next appointment, and only then did he tell me he ordered new rotors and was waiting for their arrival. Said the rotors I had were rusted and needed replacing. I was taken aback because they had just been replaced at Toyota service at my last brake change and Toyota's only replaced the rotors after several brake pad changes. I questioned the owner at Emerald and he said the rust affects the braking and was adamant I needed new rotors. I should have said no right there but I wasn't sure. I picked up my truck well over an hour later than originally scheduled. I also had to rescheduled my other appointment. When getting my truck, I asked to see the rotor and he brought them out. I took photos of them. In the attached photos, the owner is holding them. You can see they are smooth and do not need replacing. The owner only replaced the rotors to make more money. That weekend I left a message for him to call me back. Never heard back so the next week I dropped in and spoke to him in person. I asked to see the rotors again, but he said they had been picked up by the recyclers. That angered me and I told him I knew the rotors were fine after speaking to other mechanics online and in person, showing them the photos of the "rusted rotors". That the rust on the other areas were normal and didn't the brake pads or the braking. That he could have gotten a customer for life instead he chose to be scammy and take advantage of a customer? He didn't say anything but looked ashamed then walked away. I was still angry and two employees came out. I told them about the rotor and they led me where I last saw my rotors on Friday. They were still there and had not been picked up by the recyclers like the owner said. Just more lies. This is not some kindly older mechanic. I had also called the week prior before making my appt and the quote given by an employee was less than what I was charged by the owner. This is not including the rotors. There were also extra additional fees added. While maybe the employee mechanic didn't know the exact charges, the rest of my negative experience with the owner makes me wonder. You've been warned. I'm going back to Toyota Service and Repairs. They may be more expensive, but at least my guy at Toyota works with me and is honest. read more

I wanted to get a second opinion because a nationwide oil change place scared me with quote for three things needed fixing that were very overdue that was my transmission fluid, power steering and brake fluid. I came in on Monday and Emerald Auto and Brake said come back later and I chose Friday 8am and Gary would call me to let me know what needs to fixed. He said the big oil change places upsell things for cars that are not needed. After I came back on Friday and Gary just quoted me two things that costs $200 and that was that No nonsense, tell it like it is was Gary. I used to live this place but then I had this interaction with a mechanic who threatened me physically when we had a minor misunderstanding that in no way was justified. Also, several things were stolen from my car including a small amount $, which another ex- customer told me that this is the reason she had discontinued going there. Excellent, honest, efficient, easy. Love this little busy place. I had a hose issue and the car was getting hot randomly. Swung by a shop while I was out and about they wanted to immediately hook me up to diagnostic machine. Look, I know my car. I knew it was just a hose, it's a Honda, nothing else was happening, no radiator leaks, etc. So went to Emerald, they slapped a hose on it and I was on my merry way. No overheating. This isn't my usual shop but it might be if Robert at Action Auto retires. I'm pretty loyal and dedicated to those that take care of my car and don't try to sell me a bunch of uneccessary goods. It's not the 10 minute oil change but similar to if you take to a dealer where you drop off in the morning and pick up later in the day. I was in a bind today. Whilst driving in the city today, I hit a pot hole as wide as Lake Merced and as deep as Lake Tahoe and it ripped a huge hole in my brand new front wheel tire. Be careful outside of Laguna Honda before you get to Forest Hills - therein lies this huge road cavity and on a relatively busy SF road. Garry and one of his technicians, both of whom were busy plying their trade, were kind to take a look at my front tire and diagnose it as a run flat right off. The car had to be towed. A huge pain for me, but I greatly appreciate that Garry and the other technician (with an accent like me, but not like mine) were super cordial and civil and most helpful. These guys are awesome :') I had my check engine light turned on with a code that was kind of unfamiliar, and would probably take a lot of time, hassle, and money to effectively diagnose. It was a number of possibilities that could've been causing the warning, but Gary had an inclination that it might also just be a false sensor. All they did was turn off the sensor light for the check engine, and it never came back on! It was most likely just an error or false positive, but Gary helped me with the simplest solution first without forcing me to pay a hefty diagnostic fee or for that matter any fee for his advice. These are really honest people who won't try to manipulate you like many other establishments do. Just good, genuine folks and that's pretty rare to find in this industry. Even if something was wrong with my engine I'd still come back! read more

IF YOUR LOOKING FOR A SIGN HERE IT IS: I sadly hit a pot hole and jammed a large bolt into my tire leaving my first job on to my second shift. In a panic and stressed about time I stopped my Emerald's since it's down the street from my house. Assuming the worse I pulled up, hoped out of the car, and asked if there is any space for my car to be looked at. Immediately the problem was diagnosed and found a large bolt in my front wheel. The technician patched my wheel in 10 minutes and was sent on my way. I can not thank them enough, truly saved the day and saved my self from having a stage 5 mental break down. If I could give Gary and his team a gillion stars..I would! I called on a Monday and left a message to see if I could schedule an oil change and Gary called me back within a few minutes to confirm with me! He asked that I drop off my car between 8-10 which was perfect! Also the location is super convenient to shops and restaurants as well as Muni, so it was easy to grab a bite to eat after dropping my car off and then taking Muni to run errands etc. I asked Gary if he would mind checking a few other issues and he assured me it wasn't a problem and he would call me later with an estimate. Gary is a man of his word...he called me later that afternoon and not only addressed the other issues I was concerned about but he also told me I needed new rear break pad.! I have to say I appreciated the all around check of my car especially since I had no idea they were worn out! He was provided me with an estimate for taking care of all the service needed on my car and I gave him the go ahead. He told me my car would be ready in a hour and it was! When I arrived Gary greeted me with a warm smile and took my car for a test drive and gave it his seal of approval! I've had my oil changed and tires rotated here twice. I've also had my brake pads changed and rotors resurfaced. I'm in the unenviable position of both wanting the baby my sports car and to track it. I really should have separate cars, like my friends, for each purpose but I have not the parking space. Anyway, Gary's shop is quite busy so he doesn't need the business and therefore, can afford to be honest. Or more likely he's honest and people know so he's busy. I had a Toyota dealer check out a 2002 4Runner that I had purchased off of Craigslist. They informed me that the timing belt was about due for a change and that I might as well do the pulleys and water pump together. They quoted the work at around $5k. I spoke to a friend who referred me to Gary at Emerald. Gary quoted me at around $700. I told him there were some leaks and that if he could fix them while the timing belt was out, it would be much appreciated. I dropped my 4Runner off Friday morning and he called me at 4:30 PM telling me the work was done. He said that he also changed three additional belts, and installed three new seals to plug up the oil leaks. The price came out to $840 and change. This guy saved me a ton of money. This small local shop gets the job done at great prices. When I went to get just the simple routinework (oil change, tire rotation, air filter changes, etc), this place gave me the best prices compared to several in the area. Heck it was just as good or even better than some of the places in South Bay. The work was good and they did it fairly quickly. Just be sure to call and make an appointment. Even though it was during COVID-19 time, they still had cars that they worked on. Since the place is small, they don't have that many mechanics working. I think the only thing is that it may be hard to get ahold of them if they get busy. You'll have to leave a message and they'll get to you. I was able to get an appointment pretty quickly. They are open on weekdays only, so you'll have to make the time for work. But you're sure to get a good deal and good service. read more

Wow , what a moment of appreciation for mankind I had today . Big O tires quoted me 1200 dollars for an overheating car to be fixed, listing about 8 items . I knew it was bullshit. I have brilliant intuition , and it let me know . I went to Emerald , at Konrad Haberts suggestion. Not only did they fix it for 500 , the young mechanic , Dinh , took it upon himself to fix my inside drivers door handle. I had been using the frame of the door to shut it, which was a nuisance . I tried to force a tip on him, he REFUSED, though I beseeched him to take it! Gary was just very matter of fact about the issues , and warm in general . I am having a hard time, a painful divorce , but this experience restored a little hope. There are honest and kind people around every corner. Thank you ! read more

The few advantages I see of this place is the location for those in the Sunset and the relatively cheaper prices. Otherwise, I've found the service to be at times quite poor. As someone with a complete lack of car knowledge, I'm always afraid of getting ripped off. This is a truly honest mechanic that I will be returning to. I originally requested some car part replacements and Gary checked and let me know that I actually didn't need any of them. I ended up not spending a dime when he could have easily lied and replaced those parts and charged me for it. I'm grateful and impressed. I've mostly had maintenance done ie oil changes, brake pads, tire rotation. They've done a fine job for maintenance work. My only issue is when my tire squeaked after brake pads were done. I brought it back but it still squeaked. After the next oil change, it turned out to be the front that caused the squeak. I think that should have been caught the first or second time. It depends on which technician works on the car if they catch something amiss. read more

I have been meaning to write this review because Gary deserves all five stars. I had my catalytic converter stolen and he made some calls to refer me to the most affordable option. There were other issues with my car later on and I called Gary and he gave me advice on what to. Another time I got it towed to Gary and he hopped in the car and drove it down the street to diagnose the problem. He was very responsive, honest and trustworthy. I absolutely stressed about car problems but Gary helped in each situation, whether or not it involved him getting paid. I currently drive a 2013 Subaru Crosstrek XV. I take care of my vehicles, get them repaired when they need it, Keep them clean in the hopes that if I get the chance to upgrade I know what I'm trading in or re-selling is in top shape. That being said I do both regular maintenance and whenever I hear strange noises I ask a mechanic to investigate. A friend told me about, recommended Emerald, and it's in the neighborhood where I live. I brought it in because I was hearing a noise in the front end, but when Gary called me, he let me know he was impressed I could hear anything over the rear hubs. I knew the interior noise on this car was less than ideal, but I didn't think it was because of a mechanical problem. Gary suggested we deal with the issue he knew was a problem, rather than hunt for the other one. I needed the rear hubs replaced, Gary got it done quickly and at a fair price (I shopped around after he quoted me). After this work was done, I took the car home in the hopes that had resolved what I was hearing. As it turns out I could really hear the noise in the front end now, so I went back to Emerald. Gary took the car in first thing the following week, had one of the mechanics go over the vehicle end to end, called me up and said, nothing else seems to be out of order. He did mention the mechanic had tightened up some loose nuts, etc. and whatever that was completely resolved the noise.
