I have to say, I wasn't very impressed with my visit to Don's. This was a while back, we had come in with a gift card to try it out. It just really didn't impress at all; in fact, there was about $15 left on the card and we never even used it. I can't even remember what we had, but it was your typical seafood fare; shrimp or seafood platter. It wasn't bad, it just didn't stand out and I'd rather head over to Acme where I can get a better meal for the same price or less. It may be time to try it again, but I'm in no hurry; there are plenty of amazing seafood places around where I KNOW I can get a good meal. I came to Don's in Covington for dinner my last night in Louisiana before flying home to Ohio. Lexus, my server, recommended the jacked up charbroiled oysters. They did not disappoint! So good. I also had the seafood platter and the Gin Magnolia. They were both fabulous! It is never fun to eat out alone when you are traveling but Lexus checked on me often and was so friendly. Went in last week looking for boiled seafood. We were excited to hear that they had a special of all you can eat boiled shrimp for 19.99. We both ordered the boiled shrimp. What came out was unlike ant boiled seafood I have ever been served in Louisiana and I have lived here 48 years. The shrimp were served on a bed og onions and bell peppers which was obviously the only seasoning put in the water to boil them. They tasted like bell pepper. I don't even think they put salt in the water. I don't know who's brilliant idea this was but if they serve this nastiness to a tourist they are ruing the state's reputation for good food. In Louisiana it's not hard to find quality Cajun or seafood. And it seems like every time I return to Louisiana I find a new Don's. This restaurant chain has done a great job at expanding and remaining a good place to grab a bite. However, when I have to choose between here and a place like Copeland's across the street, I tend to go to Copeland's. But Don's has a great place to come for quality service and a solid meal. It's not going to make you rave about how amazing it is, but there's nothing to complain about either. In that case they're doing a good job at maintaining a quality dining experience at an affordable price. It reminds me a lot of Acme Oyster House. Its chain Cajun and that's ok. We came in looking for crawdads and weren't disappointed. They have a great seasoning that they cook their crawdads in. It makes you want to eat them over and over again. We also ordered their boudin balls, which were below average and hush puppies, which were about average. The free cup of Gumbo you get when you check in on Yelp is fair to. What I was most impressed with was there crawfish etouffee. It's worth eating the roux had a wonderful taste. So I asked for silverware,plates and napkins. Love Don's! Need to dine here more often. Went there today and had the Red Beans and Catfish. I've had this dish here numerous times. The serving I got today of beans and rice was about half of what I usually get. Not sure what was going on there, but I'm not counting it against them as I've always had great experiences. The service today was excellent! I wish I would have gotten the name of our server. She was fantastic! Best service and friendliest server I've had in a long time.
