We visited this place last night and it was really good. I had the gumbo and my husband and son both had shrimp platters. We snacked on the house made oyster crackers while we waited for our meals. These crackers are so good - we bought a bag to bring home! We went in early (around 4:30 pm) and it was pretty quiet. They had two amazing waitresses working. Our drinks were kept full, and we were checked on frequently. It was clean and the food was excellent. Next time we are in the area, we will be going back. read more

Went for 1st time yesterday with family of 5. We had: Calamari, Shrimp Creole, Grilled Trout Meniere, Meatball Sandwich, Pane Chicken with Fettuccine, and Catfish Michelle. We were all pleased with food. If there is one thing that can be improved, it is salad freshness. It was a cold day, so we enjoyed sitting near the fireplace. I've now tried this place three times. The first time I was really impressed. Ordered soft shell crab, and it was great. It comes with one good sized crab. The second time, the batter had no salt whatsoever. It was tasteless, and it was missing a claw. The third time it was almost too salty, and it tasted like it was cooked in burned oil. This one was missing a claw as well. Missing a big claw should not happen on an expensive soft shell crab platter. The French fries served with it were cold, so I didn't eat them. The lettuce in the Caesar salad was substandard (dark green and not crunchy). The crab cake appetizer was the worst I've ever had. It didn't have one sliver of identifiable crab meat in it. It was all breadcrumbs and seasoning. I was really excited to find this place, but not so much now. read more

A nice "down home" sort of place. Very busy, but service was quick & attentive. My wife had BBQ shrimp which was spicy & authentic. I had crab meat "stuffing" which was really interesting and delicious: also very rich and filling. Almost couldn't finish. Reasonable prices in an interesting sort of hunting lodge vibe. This is one of my Family's favorites. We came at the end of the lunch hour. Service was fast and efficient. Each meal we ordered was fresh and delicious! We had the Gumbo, Chef Salad, Corn Chowder, The daily special Which was fish with etouffee, po'boys, and a Mufaletta. Love the eclectic decor. The food is always so good here! And they have great service, everyone was so warm and welcoming. I Always get the Steak Diane! It comes in a brown wine sauce, and is topped with mushrooms and fried onions. Medium Rare! So good! My wife usually gets the Pane Chicken with Fettuccine, or the Trout Meniere with Crab Meat on top. Their salads are chilled and their house Ranch is great. They usually serve oyster crackers before. We liked the Crab Cakes, but I prefer their Calamari Appetizer. Never had a bad dish! Not always the best service when they are busy but the food is phenomenal. I definitely recommend their muffalettas as they are the best I've ever had especially better than Central Grocery in the city. The Ambiance is very different from any other restaurant that you would go to. It's almost like sitting in someone's dining room that's dimly lit. They have curio cabinets with personal collections of items as well as local paintings hanging on the wall and I've seen at least one window that most certainly is sustained glass antique. The noise from people talking is very low but it's a very warm place to sit and have a good meal because it is super warm and inviting to sit there comfortably. I've noticed in the two times that I've been there that that's a meeting place for a lot of people who live in Lacombe, unlike me, but plan dates to visit with each other. It's super sweet to visit them and they have a gorgeous bar as well although I've only gone during daylight hours. Highly recommend! I also truly believe in supporting local businesses, and this is one of them. read more

Never got to try the food today. Nice atmosphere, friendly people and took our order fast, but waited 45 minutes and nothing. 3 tables came in behind us and were served ahead of us. Voted with our feet and wallet and walked out without eating. The prices on their website menu are not current - some are more than $3 different - please update. Everything tasted amazing. The noodles in the fettuccine tasted homemade. (Not sure if they are). The seafood was perfectly fried and seasoned. The best part is they make homemade ranch and blue cheese. They were both delicious. My son said the meatballs were better than mine(which kinda hurt my feelings... but i tried them and they were delish). I loved the cute ambiance too. Yum! read more

This place is the perfect representation of Southeastern LA cuisine. The quality was on par with Commander's Palace or Gallatoire's, but the prices were a fraction of that of those greats. I look forward to making the drive from NOLA to this great spot again. Started with crab cakes, which were perfect. Fresh LA crabmeat. I liked how they baked instead of fried them. Also started with BBQ shrimp. Wow. One of the best versions of this classic New Orleans dish..maybe the best. Then Had the Trout Meneure. Also perfect. This is usually one of my favorite Creole dishes, and they did not disappoint. Dessert was incredible as well. Chocolate chip pecan pie. Service was welcoming and on point. Everything was seasoned to perfection. The textures and the sauces were perfectly balanced. The seafood was not too seafoody. A lot of heart went into everything that was brought to the table. Janie Browns is a hidden gem on the Northshore! People travel to Lacombe for La Provance and Sal & Judy's, both excellent choices. But if you're looking for expertly prepared food, lower prices AND some of the best renditions of New Orleans favorites that you've ever eaten, Janie's is where you should be heading. Seriously, I rate the trout meuniere in the best I've ever eaten (and I've eaten a lot!). It reminds me of the wondrous dishes from back in the day, when places like Mandich's and Mandina's crafted perfect grilled trout. And as I've said before - you will never know pure sensory delight as a Muffaletta lover until you have tried Janie's version. My mouth waters thinking about it! Very nice Resturant in the small town of Lacombe, La. The interior is interesting and well decorated. Appears clean and the staff is friendly, courteous and attentive. There is a nice menu that list everything you can order as well as all the items that come with your meal. The time it takes for your dinner to arrive at the table is just enough to relax and is brought to you in stages that you would expect it. We had a seafood platter that was more than we could eat so that required a go box at the end of the meal. In this order all the seafood was fried to perfection with fresh cooking oil and at a temperature which made it crunchy on the outside but not overdone on the inside. We drove past Janie Browns on a weekday. It was lunch time, we saw the cars out front and hurriedly checked Yelp, made a U turn and stopped to eat. We were not disappointed! The food was great. In fact, I'd say outstanding. It serves the kind of food New Orleanians love but should not indulge in too often: fried seafood, rich Italian dishes and indulgent po boys with fries. Our meals consisted of Trout Amandine, Lasagna and Paneed Chicken with Fettuccine Alfredo. Everyone was delighted with their choice....soooo good. Lunch came with a small salad. A little bowl of seasoned oyster crackers were brought out first. These were so good I could've made a meal out of that alone! Prices were reasonable, portion sizes were large. We had substantial left overs which we brought home. I can't wait until I'm hungry again. The restaurant is warm and inviting, eclectic and casual, filled with stained glass, a collection of old chandeliers and wooden panels. We can't wait to return. read more

Been here many times. Last night I had the fried shrimp platter which was fantastic. It had butterflied jumbo shrimp -- once common on these platters and now a rarity. The shrimp was fresh and tasty! We went here for a friend's birthday dinner. Most of the food wasn't bad, except the shrimp fettuccine Alfredo. The service, however, was horrible. The waitress ignored the first 4 in the party until the rest arrived. The drinks were wrong almost every single time. We had to flag her down because she never came back. It took almost 40 minutes just to get our salads. When we complained about the automatically added tips to all the checks, in light of the horrible service, she got downright rude. We were truly disappointed since several in our group had been before and had always liked it. read more

Fried softshell shell is the best on the Northshore! Fantastic crispy, light batter making the softshell crab extra awesome! We like the paneed chicken and order it with spaghetti sauce with red gravy. Their fried seafood batter is excellent and they cook it to perfection. Trout dishes are all excellent and ask for the asparagus grilled. Yum Yum. read more
