My experience with Mira Vista Tire: paid them $40, went back three times because it wasn't right, gave up. 6 months later my wheel is ruined because alignment was off and tire wore unevenly. Now, because my car is 4x4 I have to buy four new tires. Frig. My experience with Don's Tire: Paid them $95, they did the alignment properly, gave me a sheet showing exactly what they did. Problem solved. Done. Don's cost twice as much and was MUCH cheaper and easier. You get what you pay for, get it done right the first time. read more

So disappointing. They told me they'd be done in an hour, but half an hour later I was out of there with a new set of tires. This is the best place in Berkeley I know of to get tires. Not that I've bought enough tires in my life to make an informed judgment on that, but I have visited some other shops. I like the informal but professional atmosphere. I called the day I noticed a shiny nail head sticking out of my tire. I needed to come in on a Saturday morning, they penciled me in and I showed up on time. When I got there I also asked if they could rotate and balance my tires. I sat in their waiting room and read a book. The guys at the counter talked up Jimmy Beans and other nearby places for a coffee, but then I would have missed the amazing wall of "Things We've Found in Your Tires" in the waiting room, which I found really funny. I went outside to make a phone call and whined to a friend that my car hadn't even been taken in yet, and it had been almost 40 minutes of the hour they quoted me. When I walked back into Don's they said- Jessica, your car is ready. And we checked your brakes. And your total is less than you imagined it was going to be! [Okay, they didn't say that, but they may as well have.] I was so shocked and glad! Total 5 star experience- I'll be going there again. Went to Don's when I needed 4 new tires for my car and had a pretty good experience. Can't comment on the length of the wait that some others have complained about, as I wasn't really in a hurry so I wandered across the street for coffee and did some work on my laptop for a bit, then went back over maybe an hour or so later and they said it was ready, they just hadn't gotten around to calling me yet. (they seemed pretty busy that morning) I did like that they didn't try to sell me something I didn't want nor need, they asked me if I was looking for performance tires, etc. or just something basic, I said just something basic, as I had an 11 year-old Honda and at this point as long as it kept moving I'd be happy. They gave me several options, with no high-pressure sales pitch. (a HUGE plus in my book) Good experience overall and pricing seemed fair. I stopped by to ask about tire service since I was new to the area and needed new tires. I spoke with Julio who was really helpful and recommended I buy my tires from TireRack.com and then ship them to Don's. He said I would save some money by doing this. Who honestly tells you how to save money anymore? Tires arrived and I got a call that I could come by whenever it was convenient for me and have them install the tires. Called the next morning to ask if it was a good time, and they said it was a perfect time. Dropped off my car and an hour later it was ready. They even suggested I have a dealership replace a part sometime in the near future, but that it was't pressing. I can appreciate that, let me know that there is something I should be aware of and that I should take care of it. Most dealerships are trying to convince you to service certain things while they try to swindle you out of your first born child. Prices were pretty competitive with what I researched so at least I felt like I wasn't being ripped off. Bottom line, I am satisfied with my tire experience there and would have them service my tires again. Next up, oil change. Hopefully that experience is just as good as the tires. read more

My girlfriend and I seem to find every nail in the bay area to drive over, so I have been in need of tires quite a few times in the last couple years. I always to to Don's. Not only is it easily accessible (just drive up Gilman after exiting Gilman if you are not already in Berkeley), but it is also fast and cheap. I went in earlier today after running over a screw. At first Don said it would take about an hour to patch up my tire, but he saw that I was in a hurry so he had one of the guys get on it immediately. They patched up my old tire, took off the spare, checked my brake pads, put on the fixed tire, and inflated my two spare tires i had in my trunk, and did it all in less than 15 minutes and for only $25. Don't always expect to get in and out in that short of time, but I did today. Don and all of the employees are all really helpful, even if you have stupid questions like I did. If you are in or around Berkeley and you need help with your tires, Don's is the place to go. read more

STAY FAR AWAY FROM THIS BUSINESS. CLERK JEREMY WILL LIE TO YOU AND OWNER ANGELA BITHER STANDS BEHIND BAD EMPLOYEES RATHER THAN GOOD PAYING CUSTOMERS. I started going there just as Don retired last year and his daughter took over. It seems the business is going down hill fast. First was my BMW, the drive train was rattling in second gear. I took it in and asked that they use genuine BMW parts. Jermey at the front counter said he would. Instead they used off market parts causing me to return with the same problem. This time they used BMW parts and actually inspected the drive train to find out the problem was not all the parts they replaced but the actual drive train. Two trips for a problem they could have solved the first time had they just inspected the drive train. Then just a few weeks later while on my way to work my car stats steaming. I make it to work and had a tow truck take me and the car to Don's Tires. The mechanic quickly identifies the problem and tells Jeremy and me. It is q quick fix he said. But Jeremy being quite lazy kept my car in their shop from 9 am when I arrived till almost 2:30 pm. I lost the job because they kept telling me it would be done in fifteen minutes and I kept telling my boss just another 15 minutes. All they needed to do was pop a piece back in place and re fill the fluid. Five long hours. Then my wife's BMW went in because it's check engine light was on. They kept my wife's car overnight like they like to do with most cars so they don't have to rush. Instead of repairing the evap hoses like they were supposed to, Jeremy had their mechanic fix a minor oil leak that we have known about since we bought the car. They reset the car engine light and a few days later the light comes back on. I go to the shop and ask Jeremy why they didn't fix the problem we came in for. He then lies to me in front of the other person Denise and tells me my wife's car had leaked 4 quarts of oil. If it had there would have been knocking and the oil light would have been on. I explained to him that I even spoke with their mechanic about it and he explained that it was very minor and he didn't even put oil in the car because it wasn't low. They supposedly fixed the oil leak and just as we brought it home it's leaking even more oil now. When we took it back to the mm and asked that they do the repairs they claimed to have done earlier, they claim that it's now leaking from somewhere else? And when I asked why they didn't locate this leak when they were supposed to locate all the leaks after pouring dye into the oil? Very ad business. I have spent a few thousand on them trying to get my cars repaired. In fact during one repair which was my wife's headlight, they couldn't repair it because they didn't know how. So I took it to Marty's on San Pablo Ave. he found that for some reason Don's cut the wire to my lights when they tried to remove it. They NEVER told us about it just that they couldn't fix it. Marty fixed it in less than 15 minutes and installed a new light. Stay far away from this business. When Don ran it it was a great place to do business. Now that his daughter runs it it has become a dump. read more

I got two flat tires on the way from one client to another and thought it didn't look like it was going to be such a great day. I called Don's while my car was being towed; they had the tires I needed, and were able to fit me in. When I got there Don knew I was in a hurry, they had a free rack and he replaced both my tires in 30 minutes! I was back on track for my busy day and super grateful for the excellent service. I recognized Denise and she said she's been working there 13 years. My cell phone had fallen out of my purse in the tow truck and Denise was right on top of calling the company and having the driver come back with my phone within 5 minutes. I have gone to Don's Tire occasionally over the years, and I've always gotten good service. My experience is that everyone who works there is very professional and friendly. It was a surprise and pleasure to see Don again. I enjoy bantering with him--he has a sharp wit and a wry sense of humor. Their prices are competitive. I would recommend them to anyone. If I haven't gone back consistently, it's only because I've had my mechanic replace tires when needed, but I'll make a point of going back to Don's. read more

My family lives nearby and has been going to Don's for years, but I would send absolutely anyone to them even if it's out of their way. I was about to hit the road for a New Year's trip to Santa Cruz, and I waltzed out to the curb to pack my car with friends and food... only to discover a flat tire! ARGH! Everyone's favorite roadside assistance service arrived, but alas! My car's rims are weird enough that they did not have the necessary wrench to remove the lug nuts, and thus could not change the tire! They filled the tire up instead, and I was able to drive down the road to... Don's! I walked through the door in the role of the Most Obnoxious Customer In The Universe- my car required a weird tool to put on a weirdly-sized tire, I was anxious to get on the road quickly, and on top of it all, they had already been closed for ten minutes. They would have been well within their rights to send me right back the way I came. Instead, they pulled out the weird wrench needed to deal with my weird rims, dug up a used tire that was extremely friendly to my eccentric, art-fueled budget, and- I kid you not- I was out the door and on my way to Santa Cruz in about twenty minutes, for under $40. It would have taken longer to have a margarita at Picante around the corner! This is just the sort of service I have always received from Don's, and yet I am always delighted by their efficacy, knowledge, and friendly service. read more

They provided me the service they promised, which is to repair the punctured tire within an hour. Called to ask if they could fix my car's tire that got a screw stuck in it. They said yes, and within an hour after I got there, my car was ready to go again. They had lots of customers that morning, too. They handled each professionally. read more

I am honestly astounded at the people who have given Don's less than stellar reviews. If I could, I'd give Don's ten stars! I have been patronizing Don's for many years and wouldn't go anywhere else for tires. Service is exceptional! The most recent example occurred today: on a Friday afternoon my right front tire encountered a jagged curb that cut into the sidewall. We called Don's, and the capable woman we spoke to checked to see if she could get the tire we needed. It wasn't on hand at the shop, so she offered to go the extra mile (literally), driving to their supplier to pick it up so that we would have our car for the weekend. We dropped off the car, and a couple of hours later, Don's had installed the tire, and we were on our way! To those who feel women are ill treated at Don's: you're wrong! Don himself is a terrific guy with a great sense of humor. The entire crew at Don's, including the female employees, are highly competent and very personable. Came here to get a flat tire patched up ($25). The whole process took a little longer than I would have liked, but all in all I was pleased by my experience at Don's. Don works the front, and he's a super friendly and very efficient guy. I can see why he's been in the tire business for so long. if you do end up having to wait for new tires or something, there's a room off to the side where you can read a magazine or the paper. beware though if Don's grandson is running around, he's kind of a terror lol. read more

I have nothing but good things to say about these folks. They were quick, helpful, got me a great deal on parts, took time to show me things that are starting to break down and explain what each part was for (without trying to sell me anything), and even offered to break the legs of the guy who sold me a crappy vehicle to begin with. What more could you ask for? They did move very quickly as one of the last reviewers stated, but I didn't feel at all ignored or rushed: I felt like they were doing their best to make sure no one had to wait all day to get back on the road. And I'm just fine with that. Since my first trip there, I have been back twice more for additional work: every time I am given the lowest price I can find, fast service, and recommendations for other shops they are connected to for any work they can't do as quickly, cheaply, or well. I have also been to one of the shops that they recommended to replace my muffler, and that shop gave me a great discount and did good work very quickly (I'll be reviewing them next). I got a flat and Don's came recommended by a friend I trust. They did the job and -- a couple of weeks later -- the new tires (of course I had to buy 2) are doing fine. Service was perfunctory, but they did strive to answer all my questions. I wish they had a waiting area. But maybe that doesn't matter. Don's is walking distance to stores, cafes, and restaurants. Wow! Great, friendly and nice people! Called in to find out if they sell a used tire since I really needed it sooo bad and they said they have one for $35...So i said yes hold it for me but by the time I got there it was a plugged tire. They suggested to get a brand new one instead to be safe and they gave me a good deal for my 205/60/15 tire for $108...i said yes since I really dont want to be driving my bad almost ripped tire. Would u believe it was installed within 30mins?! And guess what?! They switched my back tires to the front so that the car is balanced...how nice is that...costco or any other shops wont do that. Before I left I asked them a price qoute to have the front brakes and cb boot would cost...got the price from the technicians since the clerks were busy on the phone. I am happy with the price they provided and I will for sure be a returning first time customer for their honesty, friendliness and most of all they care for their customers as if they are our family. I went to Don's to fix a flat, and after almost a month, I am still very satisfied with the work that was done. I would give 5 stars but here's my story: I called and asked if I needed to make an appointment to fix a flat, and was told to just drop in as there usually isn't a wait. When I dropped in, the wait was more than 1 hour -- apparently this isn't a common occurence. Nevertheless I was frustrated as I could not wait an hour. I asked to make an appointment for the next morning, and this time they agreed to make an appointment. Later that afternoon, I had some time, so I dropped in at Don's again to see if they had some time. I was told there was only one car before me, so my car would get in quickly, but I ended up waiting 45 minutes. Why 4 stars despite all this? For 45 minutes, I observed multiple customers coming and going into the store, and they were all treated with a friendly smile, honest (or what seemed honest) opinions, and overall great customer service. On top of that, when my car was ready, I was told I didn't have to pay anything for the service as I had waited so long!! They definitely care about their customers. I will not hesitate to go back for any future tire service. read more

I think a lot of auto service reviews are overly harsh because lets face it, car troubles suck, and most of us don't know a nut from a bolt. However I can say with confidence that Don's is fast, reliable, and they even beat Big O's prices by 8 bucks! I had three tires replaced same day in under an hour at a very reasonable price. Don also explained that I needed realignment but he was honest and helped me decide that it could wait until I had a bit more cash. Also they have a nice customer lounge and there is a great cafe across the street that makes for a pleasant wait. Side note: Don has a funny, no BS style of customer service- thin skinned people might be a little put off. Don't be a wussy because he's worth it. read more

This place was great. They worked with me to figure out how to fix my sad tire situation. I had a completely worn front tire on a FWD car that was causing some issues. They didn't try to sell me anything I didn't need and got the tire I needed ordered in one day. Nice to have a place that works with you and doesn't try to tell you what to do, as some places will. As always, its best to know at least a little bit about cars/tires whenever going to a place like this, as that is how you will get the best service and have the best experience. The staff was professional and approachable. I missed my original appointment yet they still took me in later that day. I told them I needed to get back to the city in a few hours and the receptionist talked to the mechanic who delayed his lunch break and finished my brake replacement in about half an hour. I was expecting to wait 2-3 hours as they where busy that day. I'm so grateful and now my brakes no longer vibrate (as they where) when I push the brake pedal. Happy with my service! read more

I've come here a couple of times for new tires and an alignment. They've always been super helpful, answered all of my questions, and were very reasonable price wise. When I got 4 new tires my spare tire was flat and cracked. They offered to find the best of my 4 tires I was replacing and remount it on my spare instead of making me buy a new one. I pulled in a couple weeks ago with a tire that another shop told me "couldn't be fixed". I didn't like their attitude so I looked around and found Don's on here. I went to Don't thinking I was going to be dropping $1000 on a set of run flat tires for our AWD van. Julio looked at the tire and said - if it were my car, you have another 10k miles left and I'll patch it. I went outside this morning to find a nail in the same tire - went straight to Don's.... These folks are AWESOME!!! I called regarding getting my flat fix. The woman on the phone actually told me to just come by to see if they can repair the tire for $25 first... and if it couldn't be repaired then she would help me look into buying a new tire. I dont care what anybody says, you cant go to Big O, Firestone, Costco, etc and get that kind of advice. Long story short, I got my tire repaired for 25 bucks flat, no labor fee's nada. Very helpful friendly staff who seem genuinely interested in helping you do what's best for you and your car, rather than selling the highest price tires. I got pulled over because my tire was too worn, I called and they fit me in first thing the next morning and I was in and out in half an hour. They were honest and thorough in helping me decided if I should get more than one tire (I ended up with all four) and the prices were VERY reasonable.
