After I had waited around Costco Tires for 20 minutes and then finally been told that they didn't have a replacement tire in the size I needed (and what , pray tell, is so unusual about a tire for a 1998 Volvo S70 T5?), I called Big O Tires and Don's. Prices seemed comparable, so I headed over to Don's, with whom I had done business some years before, arriving shortly before 2:00 pm. Don was having a bad day. I overheard him say that his assistant was away on jury duty and he had a number of grumpy customers. (In fact, he was in the process of returning keys to a woman whose car he hadn't been able to get to in the time promised.) Alas, this seemed to be a common theme in my brief time at Don's. There was a continuous stream of people dropping cars off, picking them up (the fortunate few), or attempting to drop them off and storming out unhappy. (As Don told one couple, who came in at 3:45 pm and wanted some work done before 5:00 pm 'You didn't make an appointment with ME!') My situation was relatively straightforward: I needed a replacement tire for the front right wheel, currently wearing the spare tire. After a brief inspection by Don, he suggested that I get the cheapest available tire, which he would put on one of the rear wheels (moving an existing tire to the front), which would last me until such time as I needed to replace all 4 tires in the (I hope) distant future. Cost: $102 including installation, balancing, labor and tax. He told me the car would be ready in one hour (3:00 pm). When I returned at 3:10 pm, I noticed my car in the spot I had left it, with the spare still on the front right wheel. There ensued a lengthy case of mistaken identity (he thought my car was a Honda), in which he repeatedly told me that the car would be ready shortly, that my tire still had some tread on it, that they could salvage it, etc etc. Me to Don: I blew out my tire - there's no way it can be repaired! Don to me: Isn't your car the Honda? Me to Don: for the last time, my car is the VOLVO! Finally, he saw the light and instructed his workmen to replace my tire. Only problem now, they couldn't find the keys! On the plus side, once they began work on the car, it was finished in 10 minutes. I left about 4:00 pm. As has been remarked in other reviews of Don's, his workplace is quite retro. There's a counter to the left where you can sit and read during the interminable delays (surprisingly, the day's NY Times was on the counter), underneath old framed photos of Don and his family. It's all a bit grungy, but very much in tune with the overall ambiance of Don's. All in all, visiting Don's is a true Berkeley experience. I think he does good work for a fair price. A word to the wise: if you hope to have your car finished in a reasonable time, make an appointment (and then be ready to give him plenty slack). read more

I like things that are real. Not pretending to be something their not. Don's is real. It's long standing family business with fair prices, grandkids on the walls and the owner behind the counter. Want to discuss Berkeley politics, yoga or the healing arts. Probably not going to go well. But OH YEA! It's a TIRE place. If you are courtious to them they are courtious to you. If you are self riteous, you might get knocked down a peg. Just like in real life. They have the top brands, but also carry some lower priced models in case you don't have $150 per tire to spend. They are always fair, don't try to upsell me and they work fast. Hey folks. If there are 10 people ahead of you it takes longer OK! Wow, Fantastic people here. I took my bmw to get a front toe adjustment yesterday. When the car went up on the rack the tech noticed a fuel leak from my filter. The awesome guys at Don's allowed me to run to the store, grab some parts and fix the leak myself! All on their lift! For no extra charge!! EXCELLENT people, AWESOME customer service and the CHEAPEST alignment in the bay area. On top of all this, they even offered to re-align the car if it doesnt track straight. Professional, fast, and honest. Recommendation came by word of mouth from long-tine residents. Had a tire replaced, although they didn't have the exact replacement they gave plenty of options. Was fast service- I had a wedding to go to and made it out in less than 30 minutes. I would not expect this every time, but I appreciate how accommodating they were. First time to Don's tire and I have to say they are an excellent business. They have my highest recommendation. I brought my car in to have new tires installed along with new Tire pressure monitoring sensors(TPMS) as my aftermarket wheels did not have them. They had trouble syncing them with my car. They did not give up and had the techs staying overtime to try and get it working. They did not give up and finally got it working. I think my car was just being finicky, but they got it done. Had a slow leak in a tire, called Don's and was able to drop my car off 20 mins later. Someone took care of it while I waited. I was worried that because my tires are run-flats they'd tell me the tire would have to be replaced (after what I'd read on the web about these tires). Nope! There was a screw stuck in the tire, that was removed, the tire was patched, and I was done in an hour. The best news? They charged me $35! I felt bad it was so cheap. Thanks Don's! read more

I get a lot of flat tires. This is never my fault because I am a very cautious and defensive driver. I use my turn signals when changing lanes, keep my hands at two and ten o'clock, try to share the road with bicycles and pedestrians, and rarely text while driving. Despite all this, I seem to run over many screws and nails. Which is how I end up at Don's Tires on Gilman more often than I would like to. So here I am once again--disheveled, un-showered, without breakfast--pulling up to Don's Tires hoping to beat the other unfortunate people who have flat tires. It is far too early for my liking despite that I live less than 8 blocks away. Don's Tires opens for business at 8:00am, thus I arrive five minutes early, and despite this feat, their red roll up doors were already open and mechanics are busily working and there is every other sign that Don's Tires is open for business. Am I too late? "No, we open at 8," the cheerful woman who runs the front counter informs me. It is doubtful that she is related to Don (I've never asked), but if one thing is certain, it is of her unwavering allegiance to the San Francisco 49ers. One time, when I was driving to work, and I was stuck at that stupid light at 6th and Gilman, I saw Don out front of Don's Tires supervising the installation of his "50 years in business" sign, which made me feel good (momentarily), so I took a photo with my camera phone. In any case, running over a screw and getting a flat tire is usually unplanned, I did not have an appointment, but the nice lady who runs the place fit me into their schedule and told my car would be ready an hour later. After nearly being run over by a U-Haul truck while crossing the street, and stepping over a sleeping hobo, I walked into Jimmy Beans and ordered a side of home fries, a cup of water and that is all thank you. Jimmy Beans gets a lot of business from the people waiting for their flat tires to be fixed. But I didn't want to spend an hour at Jimmy Beans so I walked up the street a few blocks to the new Whole Foods Marketplace in the Gilman District. I hate that place so much that I am beginning to think I only go there to fuel my antisocial and apparently sadomasochistic tendencies. Whole Foods Marketplace in the Gilman District has a whole part of the store which is the "Allegro Coffee Roasting Company" and I decided to order a single low-fat latte in a large cup. I hadn't even signed my name with my finger of the iPad payment system when my phone rang again. Thankfully it wasn't a blocked call or a random 1-800 number (I really need to sign up for that do not call list website) but instead it was that nice lady from Don's Tires telling me that my car was ready--a whole fifteen minutes earlier than they had promised me! I hate to say it, but their timing turned out to be quite inconvenient, so I had to cancel my latte order and walk back down the street. It's really great that they finished the job early, but I must wonder why they can't let me know how long it is actually going to take? It would make things a whole lot easier for their customers. After a hurried walk down Gilman, I had worked up a good sweat and had a musky odor to match, but the unfresh waiting area of Don's Tires did little to help this. One time while I was waiting for my flat tire to be fixed, I saw a guy looking at pornography on his computer in the waiting area! $375 was deducted from my bank account, and in return I was given the key to my car along with the promise of two brand new tires affixed to my vehicle. They did the work so quickly I briefly wondered if I was being told the truth. The tires did seem new, and they were not flat. So there I was, about to get back into my car and drive to work, but when I opened the door, the interior smelled like a brewery! It certainly did not smell that way when I dropped it off. I was shocked to find that a reusable bag containing empty beer bottles in the trunk (which I was planning to recycle) had been carelessly knocked over, and the last of their contents sloshed around the cargo area of my Honda CRV. It was as if I was visiting an Isla Vista frat house, but without the vomit, passed out sorority girls, plastic keg cups, or a sombrero. I spent the next eight to ten minutes wiping up spilled suds, and no one even offered to help me! Eventually this unplanned, wet mess was dried up, but the sour smell of stale Sierra Nevada Pale Ale lingered for several days. After this experience, I will never go to Don's Tires on Gilman again. Until I get another flat tire. One star. read more

They broke my adjustment bolts while doing my alignment. They told me I had to order a new one which I reluctantly accepted. We had a price locked in but when I cam back the next week they told me hey would refund my previous amount and would charge me more because the other person who agreed shouldn't had agreed to the price. It is a very poor management decision to try to charge more, especially when it is in writing for the agreed price. Eventually, I just asked for a refund and decided to take my business elsewhere. read more

I purchased heavy duty shocks and springs for a Jeep Wrangler and looked around to have them installed. I knew what was involved in swapping out the parts and would do the work myself if I had access to a lift. I checked a few other places for estimates - Wheel Works wouldn't do the work unless I bought the parts from them and Big O wanted to charge me as much as the dealer and claimed they needed to add unnecessary labor in order to complete the job. Don's gave me a thoughtful and reasonable estimate, they scheduled me to come in when they were ready to do the work and didn't leave me waiting around the shop, dropped me off at my office and picked me up again after the work was complete, completed the work on time and charged me what they said they would. Don's is a good example of a well run, locally owned shop. I wish there were more of these kinds of businesses around rather than the impersonal, inefficient big chain stores. For me, that means, since sometime in the mid-eighties. I've gone to get complete new tires or just to replace a single tire due to running over a screw in my driveway. I'll save the story of my screw for my review of Pastime Hardware in El Cerrito. As a woman with a pathetically small knowledge of car maintenance, I'm always nervous when I go into any kind of auto shop. The folks are Don's are very straightforward and polite. Go here if you want a fair deal, fast service, and respectful customer service. If you have to wait for your tires to be serviced there are some good shops and eateries in the hood. read more

Don's Tires left me stranded over Memorial Day weekend so they could go fishing I picked up a furniture tack in a tire and a longtime Berkeley resident and customer of Don's recommended they could fix it and would do a great job. My (visibly pregnant) wife and our 2 year old daughter took the truck to them for an 11:30 appointment that was going to take 45 minutes and they were going to rotate the tires as well. It ended up taking almost 2 hours. No problem things happen. The problem was when she picked me up around 2:15 and we jumped on the freeway heading towards Alameda it immediately became apparent that the wheels were out of balance. At 45 MPH we had to turn on our hazards because anything over that sent the steering wheel violently shaking. We immediately called Don's and they said we could bring it in now and they would deal with it. We told them we were in Alameda and could be there this afternoon. They told us they close at 3 pm and were going fishing and we could make an appointment for Tuesday morning! My wife agreed to this but I was unwilling to go 4 days (this is Thursday) driving my family around in this state. We called them back and said we'll be there by 3 and they told us "we close at 3, you have to be here by 2:45"! Being unable to drive on the freeway we couldn't make it, so I ended up going to Big-0 tires and spending another $80 (which I was hoping to avoid to support a local recommendation). Things happen. I get it. But the fact that they were not willing to make right what they had done and leave our family stranded over a long holiday weekend was totally outrageous. As with many things in life, its not the mistake that is important, but how you respond to it and make it right. I mean, c'mon, you couldn't wait another 15 minutes to make it right?! I hope they caught a whopper because I sure feel like I got skunked by Don's. Needless to say, I will not be going back here and will tell others not to if asked. read more

I called these guys on a Saturday because my steering wheel was vibrating and my car wasn't handling very well. First, they tell me to come in, even though I don't have an appointment. Then, they call me after 40 minutes to tell me that my car was done. I go to pick up my car and, instead of a whole new set of tires or some other expensive fix, the charge was around $35 for wheel weights and labor. I get in my car to drive away and realize that they fixed the driver's seat-adjustment electrical panel, which had been hanging loose from the side of my car for months. Without my asking. Well, I marched right back into their office to demand an answer about this. The woman at the desk admitted that they fixed it and then she actually said to me, "And don't you yelp that shit." You can rest assure that I told her unequivocally that I WOULD be yelping this. Fixing my car without my asking or charging me? Who does that?! Oh, and my car is handling like a dream, thanks to their repair. If you've got a thing for outstanding customer service, then by all means, take your car to Don's. If not, there are so many places out there who are happy to take your money and treat you poorly. read more

So I need new tires and first check with Costco where I had bought my last set, which now have only 22,000 miles on them. After being told the tires were only expected to last 20,000 and to be prepared to put out another chunk of change, I decided to check alternatives. A friend turned me onto Don's tire service. I got tires at a reasonable price one day after ordering. The best thing about the experience, however, was seeing Don work with a young woman who needed her tires replaced but could only afford one right now. He educated her about tires, gave her several options and then found a used tired that would work for her most urgent need until she could get a full set. This is a family type operation; I paid about 5% more than I would have at Costco, but got much better service and the money stays with the locals. read more

After subsequent harassing by someone working for don's tire service, I'm bumping them down to 1 star. How's that for your revised review? Harassing your customers and asking them to revise their reviews is NOT good business practice. And though you say your business isn't sexist, 20 reviews on Yelp stating that you are speaks a heck of a lot louder. Don't harass your customers. She did remind me that I got a tire rotation and alignment. Whoops, my bad. Still overpriced, from what I could find. Oh, and did I mention that I had to have the same exact service done again the next month (at another place) because whatever they did wasn't right, and I had the same problem again. Thank goodness, the next tire place got it right (and for a much more reasonable price). Nope, sorry lady, but every time I drive by, I still think "that's the place that treated me awful, and then tried to get me to change my review." Thanks! read more

I just went to Don's auto for a front wheel alignment they told me I had to get all this additional work done on my car so I took it to my regular mechanic who unfortunately doesn't do wheel alignments. He checked my car out and couldn't find any problems. Makes you think. read more

Don's did a great job of alignment, balancing and mounting four tires - all for a reasonable price. And they had my Lexus ready in the time frame they estimated, even though they were busy. Their front office team is top notch and fun to deal with, plus they really know their tires, and what works best for your (my) type of vehicle. I wont start by saying don't go there but I'll say go there on your own risk. I would have given them a 3 star before for the owner/his son's rude behavior but what i saw today while changing my tires i cant believe myself. Story starts with me feeling a lot of vibration in my car and so i took it to don tires for balancing. They detected that its a bent wheel and i got a replacement wheel from tire-rack. Now they have to mount and balance the wheel. As simple as it may sound they made it complicated. After unmounting the tire they realized that they don't carry the specialized TPMS sensor valve wow... their 25 years of experience just kicked in. They tried to find sensor valve but in vain and asked me to come after two day or travel 40 miles to get the sensor valve. So i decided to help them (As my car in on lift and i need it badly the next day) and called different places to see if they have a valve. So they sent me with one of their workers to get the valve. We came back in 35 mins and the son of the owner was mad at me, for taking their worker for a ride AND WASTING THEIR TIME. I couldn't be more mad/shocked but to add to that they added 2 hrs of lift usage time to my invoice and blamed everything on me. At this point i decided that i will take them to better business bureau. But before doing that i called the dealership and found that the part is available (they called the same dealership and told me that part is not available). Just to show them that its not me who wasted their time but they did it own their own. I went back to them and as a favor to me they fixed it. But today i realized that it was a big mistake to take it to them. I have aftermarket wheels and they come with spacers, when i was changing tires today i found that 2 of them were missing. As a result my car was going to right own its own. Most probably because of camber change under load due to missing spacers. Long story short i will never go there.... read more

Fast service and good prices. They have never tried to sell me something I didn't need. Last time I went in with a slowly leaking tire thinking I might need to just replace all my tires. Don reassured me that my tires (at 50k Miles) were fine. One hour and 30 dollars later the leak was fixed and I was out of there. I spent alot of money little more than a year ago when 2 tires went bad on my all wheel drive Volvo- at Don's they insisted that all 4 had to be replaced despite 2 were still newish- They recommended a tire I had never heard about & reassured me it was a good tire- Now little over a year later we had a slow leak & went into Don's & were told that they would call the manufacturer b/c the wear was really bad for so short a time- We waited for days to hear back & only when I called did I get the answer that the manuf says the tires they sold me were for "the ride" and have no wear guarantee- so we are out of luck & then Don tried to sell me 4 new tires of a different brand!!!! I told him I had to be crazy to give him another dime! Stay away unless you just want to throw $ down a hole read more

For some reason, this review from June, 2015 was not recommended and disappeared from Yelp. But it's a real review, by a long term customer, and it deserves to be seen, so I've posted it again. I've done business with Don's for years, and always liked the place. But my last three interactions have been disappointing, and the response from the front-desk even more so. Incident #1: I bought a new set of tires, drove off, and two hours later called a tow truck to change one of the tires, which was flat (couldn't do it myself, lug nuts on too tight). Don's had installed it with a faulty valve. Okay, that happens. But their response when I brought it back was basically "meh". No apology, no offer to pay the tow truck! #2: New valve installed, I picked up the car, and just to be sure, checked the tire pressure on the new tire. The new one and the other three were all overinflated by 10 PSI. I pointed this out to customer service. Another meh. Really? Overinflating by 30% can't be good, right? No one seemed to care too much. #3:I tore a hole in one of my new tires and brought the car back in this week. They put a new tire on, and when I got home I checked the pressure -- all four tires have been overinflated by 10 PSI again. I called in to complain and got more "meh." I asked to speak to the manager -- we were up to 3 strikes in my view -- and was told that if she thought it was important she would call me. No call. Final straw? Wait for it... I had taken my father-in-law's car for a new set of tires about 3 weeks ago. So I decided to check those tires' pressure this AM. Guess what? 8 PSI over. So -- Don's seems to coasting on their previous good service record and not checking the quality of the work. Too bad. Not happy. Yeah, Don is a friendly guy, but the help turns over fast and the repair work is shoddy. I brought my Jeep in to get the power steering hose replaced. I had to return three times, and it still leaks. I've given up on these guys. After the second visit, the excuses started flowing like power steering fluid. read more

I went to Don's a few years ago and was disappointed, so have not been back. The tires were ok (a bit pricey) and the service was ok, but they broke the handle off my trunk cover. I opened my trunk and found the handle sitting there on top. They admitted it but wouldn't replace it, implying it was not their fault, that the handle was already broken. I found this shoddy. I was entitled to go back for a free rotation, but they were so snotty about the broken part that I never wanted to return. read more

I work across the street from Dons and have taken my car there quite a few times. Besides my business, my boss and co-worker take there tire problems to Don's as well. These guys/gal are nice. I had a slight problem with them one time. Nothing major just some mis-communication on the time my tire was to be finished.. Nothing major, and honestly possibly my fault for not being specific about what I wanted. Anyhow, not only was the problem fixed, but the job (patching a flat) was given to me free for the inconvenience. And they did it with a smile and an apology. Yes a patch job is not a big or hard deal, but how many times do you actually here an apology and a free patch?? I would like to share my experience and opinion of Don's Tire Service. I went there for the first time about a month ago. I took my Tesla Model 3 to get new tire, wheels, and TPMS sensors installed. I didn't buy my tires from Don because I found it slightly cheaper online, but it was cool that I had an option to ship my tires to Don's direct. Once the wheels and TPMS sensors were installed, there was an issue with the rear stem valves rubbing up against and scraping my newly painted calipers. Long story short, they tried to make the existing TPMS sensors and stem valves work to no avail. Virgil stayed late to try and make it work but it wasn't happening. So I had to order new TPMS sensors and valves, and brought it back to Don's a week later. Even with the new ones, there was still fitment issues, but eventually, Virgil was able to make it work. One of my most difficult and frustrating experiences with new wheels, but eventually it all worked out. Throughout the whole process the folks at Don's Tire were great. Laura working at the front desk filling in on a Saturday, Ashley at the front desk the following Saturday, and both Angelo and Virgil in the shop making sure I left their shop with everything working and fitting properly. They were very helpful and accommodating, even staying late both times to make sure my wheels and TPMS sensors fit right. It could have been a very bad experience with everything that could go wrong that went wrong, but the folks at Don's were all very nice, understanding, helpful, professional and courteous. I like supporting mom and pop shops like this one and I will definitely continue to go to them for my tire and wheel needs. They definitely earned my business! A tale of two tire stores: Last Sunday, I found a screw in my tire while at a gas station. Wanting to take care of it before the start of the week, I pulled into the first open tire store I could find - Firestone on University. The conversation with Firestone goes something like this: F: "That's close to the side, I don't know if we can patch it." Me: "It's like 2 inches in. Is that really close?" F: "Well, we'll take the tire off and look at it and call you. By the way, I don't like the way the rest of your tires are wearing." Me: "Well, I don't like what you're wearing." I sign the paperwork, acknowledge the $35 charge for patching and head home. Firestone calls me one hour later. The conversation goes like this: F: "Yeah, we can't patch it. And with the way your other tires are wearing, we recommend you replace all 4." Me: "What just happened?" F: "The cost would be $260." Me: "Total?" F: "Per tire." Me: *choke* *cough* *spasm* "It is more likely that I would use $1000 to wipe my ass than pay $260 per tire." Me for real this time: "Put the spare tire on. I'm coming to pick it up" On Monday, I call Don's tire. I give him the edited version of the story and ask what it would cost for a single tire in my size. He says: "Hold on cowboy. Bring it down. We can probably patch it. If for some reason we can't, it'll be $160 for a new one, but we probably can." I head down there and the tech who looks at my tire laughs and says: "Yeah, that's no problem. We can patch that." Less than an hour later and I'm driving away with a patched tire for $25. Lessons learned: 1) $25 is less than $1000 2) Don's Tires is better than Firestone tire 3) Be immediately skeptical of someone who can say the following in one breath: "Sorrywecan'tpatchyourtirebutwecanchargeyou$1000toreplaceallfour.Pleasesignonthebottomline." read more

I really wanted to like this place, but after 2 visits for the same tire, I'm unimpressed. I heard great things about Don's, so I went down there when I suspected a slow leak. They checked it out and told me the only problem was the pressure being off on some of my tires, which they fixed. I was happy to not have had a bigger problem. About a month later, the same tire was completely flat. I went back to Don's and he was not nearly as friendly as my first visit--very patronizing, sarcastic, and unhelpful when I asked questions about what could be wrong with my tires (they still didn't find a leak). What really chapped me was when he asked how I "intended to pay" before they had even looked at my car and before he asked my name to look me up in the computer --he had not done this on my previous visit, nor did he do it to any of the customers that came in after me, though when I asked why he said that it was "policy" (maybe he meant "profiling"). The only reason for 2 stars instead of 1 is b/c the guys who work there are really nice and at least try to be helpful. read more

I bought 4 tires for my 1984 Porsche Carrera from Don's Tires. They over-tightened the lug nuts on installation and 12 of the lug nuts broke when removing the tires. This caused me nearly $1,000 to remove and repair the lug nuts. Protocol for the older Porsches is very clear that you hand tighten with a torche wrench. Worst of it all, when I went back to discuss with them there was ABSOLUTELY no apolology or even mention of possible restitution. They were terribly unprofessional. Debated between using these guys or Orozco's Tires. Unfortunately I made the choice of going with Don's Tire Service. I didn't care much that the staff seemed callous. What prompted me to write this negative review is that they drove my poor little old Honda over the big white wheelstop/chock to park it! Which meant I had to drive over the wheelstop a second time to get out of the lot! If you've also had a bad experience with these guys or you're in doubt, use Auto Options in Berkeley instead and save yourself the frustration. read more

I think it's important for a business to consider customer service and the way in which its employees interact with current and potential clients. With that being said, when I walk down the street and get whistled and cat called at when I pass Don's Tire Service, it makes me not want to bring any of my tire needs to this establishment. If they can't bother to treat me with respect as a human being, then I can't be bothered to spend any money with them. read more

Needed four new tires and Don's was close by so I stopped in. Had them do the work but wish I had not - it's been four years and it still bugs me. With all of the different tire places to go Don's would be my last choice. read more
