We are looking for our "local spot" now that it is safer to go out again. I've been eyeing Donum Dei for ages, so was really looking forward to checking them out. We went on a weekend, early afternoon. Lots of seating inside and out, for their size. At first I really liked how they had a garage door rolled up, so even inside felt like outside. However, several patrons outside were smoking, which drifted inside and made it hard to breathe. Not cool!! Beer options were a bit limited, but because of that, we decided to go big and try all of them in a flight. I'll fully admit to being a beer snob, so I'll just say that while most of them were decent, nothing to really write home about. Based on the experience, we probably won't be making this our go-to, but if you are a local who does not mind smokers and wants a hangout place, give them a try. read more

Pretty good experience for my daughter & me. Beer was okay. I had a flight of 4-Unicorn, Tow Boat, Grapefruit, Pom Bomb. Bar food was good. Justin our bar tender, chef & server helped make our experience the best it could be. He was very friendly. Although, he was busy serving beer to a regular & tending to another table he did spend time with us talking about making beer at the Grant Line location. They also make spirit there; gin, whiskey, vodka,... Ashley & I had pretzel & beer cheese (ok), humus with pita slices & olives (good), chicken quesadilla (good) & chicken panini (good) with kettle chips. It's a small place with a smalll menu. Probably a good place to hang if you're not food picky & like to drink craft beer. Give a local place a try, if you haven't tried this one. Glad I finally did. read more

If darker, malty beers are your forte, Donum Dei is your best option in the area. Their IPAs skew toward piney and malt-forward flavors, and they are outstanding and quite unique; standouts include the 812 Nouveau and the Amarus. I also thoroughly enjoy their Towboat porter, and the Coffee Crossing Stout is a top-notch stout that's more than worthy of the CC name. As you can imagine, a visit here is especially satisfying in the winter. Donum Dei also has some nice offerings for fans of lighter beers. If you see a saison on tap here, order it without hesitation; you won't regret it. Bud's is a solid light lager, their pomegranate amber ale is a crowd-pleaser, and while Witbier isn't my favorite style, the Wittle Moon is a pretty good take on it. Make no mistake, the dark beers steal the show here, but Donum Dei is far from a one-trick pony. This is a small taproom tucked away on Grant Line Rd, in the strip mall behind El Nopal and Lee's. It's a straightforward watering hole; no gimmicks, TVs, screens or (shudders) silent disco nights, just tables and some board games. It's not for everyone but Luddites will be in heaven. The food options are limited but I do have a soft spot for their homemade soups, and the price is right for them too. All of the New Albany breweries are worth trying at least once, but I would make Donum Dei your priority. read more

Donum Dei is located in a strip mall in New Albany. Decided to check it out on our way back from Hubers Winery. It's a small brew pub, seats for maybe 25 people or so. We arrived on a Tuesday and our good luck...all drafts were $2.00 off. $2.95 for a 16 house draft, no matter which one you choose was an incredible deal...and as my husband, the craft beer fanatic will tell you...all their beer is "damn good". The limited staff there, sorry of a one man shop...was friendly and informative. Got to meet the head brewer who definitely knows what he is doing. I will not say add much for their mixed drinks...or at least the Bloody Mary. It was rather watery and tasted predominantly of pickle juice. I would have preferred the martini but the description listed "imitation dry vermouth" and since the barkeep couldn't tell me what that was, I passed. Stop by if your in the area. Also noted that all their 64ounce growers are $8.95...you can't pass that up!! read more

Been looking for a neighborhood hang a la Cheers? This is it. My friend and I went to hear some live music and instantly fell in love with this modernized neighborhood brewery. We snagged a long table with friends, and the staff came over to greet us-- not just to explain the beer, but to genuinely say hi. The space is small and intimate, with maybe ten tables at most and a beautiful stone-framed bar. Through the glass, you can see the brewery equipment. What makes this place different for me, as there are a plethora of breweries popping up in Kentuckiana, is the staff and their play on beer. My friend had a beer mimosa (!) Which seemed to feature a light saison with fresh fruit lopped in. It was summer in a glass. I had their dark porter, which had just enough smoke and sweet for me, whichiut some of the chemically bitter aftertaste I've been tasting at small area breweries. The prices are right...about $5 a pint. Not a drinker? No worries! They have an awesome list of house made sodas. (This was something of note to me, as I have friends who are nondrinkers...so finding a place that has good beer and really yummy non alcoholic drinks is tough!). Try their ginger ale. Yes, there is food! The beer cheese is served with a large soft pretzel. It was something to munch on, but I think they'd do better with pretzel sticks or breadsticks. After having driven past Donum Dei on a nearly daily basis, I finally decided to stop in and was very happy that I did! I didn't realize that they have been occupying their little tucked-away spot in a Grantline Rd. strip mall for almost a year now. The little sandwich board with "Brewery" and an arrow will point you to the drive you need to take. The room is small and pretty quiet. The good-sized bar at the back is understated and functional with some plain taps protruding from the wall, while glasses, wood grains and mirrors make up the rest. I wasn't sure what to expect when I came in. Would they have bombers? Growlers? Would I have to stay for a pint? Honestly, I didn't have a lot of time, so I asked for something to go. They handed me a food menu (I didn't even know they served food, mainly sandwiches and pub fare) and then clarified, "No sorry, just beer." They do, indeed, have growlers for take out. There were several on the menu, but I tried the two IPA's and appreciated the subtle differences between them. It was some good beer! Also, the guys working there couldn't have been nicer! Seriously. Super friendly, always smiling and were very knowledgeable about everything I asked about. I had my first Donum Dei experience last night, and was very impressed! Tucked away off of Grant Line Road in New Albany in a somewhat run down strip mall, Donum Dei is clean, fresh looking, and has some great beer. I actually went for an "art opening" of sorts. My younger brother is the featured artist at the brewery for the summer. (HUGE kudos to Donum Dei for supporting local artists.) The owners were super friendly and fun, and seem to enjoy owning their little brewery. I had a flight of beer with all of the ales. Red, Pale, Belgian, and Brown. I'm not typically a beer drinker but I really enjoyed the red, but didn't hate any of the options. My mother doesn't drink beer at all and had a house made ginger ale and it was super tasty! It was brought up by the owner that they only serve food because Indiana requires them too, but my parents both got paninis that were delicious, and I saw some yummy hummus floating around, too. I got a 'cheese plate' that was merely sandwich slices of cheese with some crackers. Odd, but it was cheese- so I ate it. I will be sending lots of people over to Donum Dei. I hope they can make it being in such the odd location! read more

It's wonderful to see signs of the craft beer movement in suburban Indiana strip malls. They have turned this little hole-in-the-wall into a sweet little operation. Even by microbrew standards, this place is tiny. Rick basically can only make one beer at a time, and his grain storage has to extend to a trailer parked in the loading zone in back. The restaurant serves nice little paninis and hummus. They've only been open for a couple of months now, but I have to admit I don't think they are quite where they need to be with the beers yet. My girlfriend and I each tried a flight and thought that while nothing was bad, nothing stood out either. It might just take a little time for them to find their specialty. In the meantime, support your local brewer! read more

Great little brewery. I love the Unicorn, a Scotch ale. Soups have been a good addition to the menu. My favorite is the tomato basil. Nice, friendly place. Games available for a relaxing visit. Also, home brewed ginger ale and root beer make great additions for kids or adults not wanting alcohol. read more

The food is terrible and the beer is mediocre. There are many other breweries that are of higher quality in the area.

It just keeps getting better. I go there on a nearly weekly basis and Rick continues to add new beers to the menu. It seems like each one gets better than the last. Highly recommended. I like Belgian wheat beers, but I usually don't buy them or order them, I only drink them if someone else has bought them. That being said, Rick's Wittle Moon is amazing! Finally got around to my first visit to Donum Dei Brewery and enjoyed their crafted beers. I like wheat beers in the summer and the Wittle Moon was an instead hit for us. In fact, I brought along my growler and had it filled for $9.95. I believe that I counted 11 different beer offerings and samples are available and a beer flight is another option when sampling. I would rate the beer quality 5 stars. I have one requirement when attending any brewery in that I also want food. No problem here, Donum Dei Brewery offers a limited menu but that works for me. The hummus plate is quite good, in fact their hummus was better than the hummus at my favorite Greek restaurant in New Albany. I also had the smoking turkey pesto which hit the spot. On this evening Rachel was wearing many hats, working behind the bar and in the kitchen. She was a star. Greeting everyone that entered and was friendly. She made sure everyone in the place was well taken care of. I have two suggestions for Donum Dei Brewery and these shouldn't be taken as criticism. 1) a ceiling fan would be nice. The garage doors were open on this cooler than usual summer day and we ate inside, but some moving air would have been nice. 2) Some background music would also be a suggestion. The day after the dust settled after their grand opening I got a chance to sample the beer and it was very good. The owner took the time to sit down and have a talk with me while I sipped on some of his delicious beer . They brought me some hummus that was made in house and it was absolutely delicious. I've dropped in here several times for a beer. This is a small brewery, with a small bar out front and some light food offerings. Service is great, especially if you are a beer nerd like me and like to talk beer. Owner and family are frequently working, and passion for brewing really shows. Nice selection of their beers, and as far as I can tell, nothing else. Always something new to try rotating in. I've had hummus and a nice grilled ham sandwich the couple of times I've ordered food, but that's not what this place is about. Nice to have food available, though. Nice indoor space, a garage style door that opens up when it is nice out, and a couple of tables on the sidewalk. In a strip mall behind El Nopal, you have to be going here to find it, you aren't just going to see it from Grant Line Rd. read more

Small and cozy place for a beer and conversation. Very clean and neat. Not a lot of food choices but it's meant to be a brewery and sticks with that. Pretzel with beer cheese very good. You can actually taste the beer in the beer cheese which is very rare. As others have said the staff are very friendly and helpful. Their friendliness seemed genuine. There is no TV which makes conversation easier. I don't think you'll find another place quite like it. read more

Enjoy a few pints here last night and was pleasantly surprised with the staff, surroundings and BEER! Partial to the Unicorn and came home with a growler full and a large bottle of the Drunken Unicorn for another time. The coffee Stout was delicious as well as the red. Even the IPA which I generally don't like was very mellow and enjoyable. I've been searching for a local brewery and glad to say I found home! Had a pretzel with beer cheese which hit the spot for a little food substance ho go with all the samples I enjoyed. Off the beaten path but not by much. Certainly worth a try. This is one of my favorite local breweries to go to. They have $2 off pints on Tuesday's. The beer is significantly different from other craft brews. It's so much better. Nice people and the beer has potential. The pale ale and Belgian beers are decent but the other beers we tried need some work. For example the red ale, when true to style usually has a deep amber color, was as light as the pale ale and had a distinctive home brew flavor. I have usually found that as new breweries get used to brewing on the larger scale the quality improves quickly and I hope this is true of Donum Dei. read more

This is a really nice place to eat and have a beer. They are fairly new and still getting their feet under them. We stopped for lunch and a beer, the hummus was awesome, the sandwiches (Reuben and a gourmet grilled cheese). They were but really good. I had the Enkel Belgium and it was good but could use a bit more taste to it. The reason for the 3 stars, it was slow. But that was ok as we were not in any hurry. The food was freshly prepared. Menu is limited but everything is fresh and good. Hopefully they will continue to grow and improve over time. I will continue to stop by and check in there as it is worth the chances. read more

I've been in multiple times and haven't had a bad experience. The owner is very personable and knowledgeable regarding beer. He makes some very good beers and keeps things very close to the style. I've had a few of their food items and they've been good. Whoever has been working has always been willing to give a beer recommendation to pair with everything. My price rating was in the $11-$30 range. I based this on each person getting a beer and some food(~$4-$6 each). As most understand, 'a' beer can turn into 'beers' pretty easily. read more

I live nearby and stopped by on my way home for a bit of decompression after fighting traffic. The staff is young and friendly and open to conversation. They are enthusiastic about their brewing and willing to share what's coming up on tap. I had the hummus plate and it was quite good, with lots of tahini flavor. With that I had an Amarus which was crisp and delicious. The space is light and bright, but not cold at all. it's not a dark, cavelike setting like some microbreweries tend to be. I found it quite nice and will go back for more and recommend it to my friends. In addition to their beers, they offer a few wines and fruit ciders. Also on offer are panini. read more
