I don't leave a lot of reviews but this one had to be done. On a Friday night a group of 6 of us stopped in after dinner, there was one other patron sitting at the bar with his dog sitting on the barstool next to him. Upon opening the door we were immediately greeted with the smell of cat urine, looked to the left and there was a cat wandering around the bar. The bartender was nice enough but low and behold, he sits a beer on the bar after pouring it and we see the cat now walking on the bar, my buddy had to grab his beer quickly as the cat was getting ready to take a drink out of it. And the fish tank, it was pretty gross, it looked like it had never been cleaned. I doubt there was anything living it it but we couldn't tell since the water was a solid green color. Looked thru the window into the brewing area and first thing we see is a bag of cat food on one of the carts in that area. It had to be the nastiest place I have been to for a long time. I would have felt cleaner having a drink in a flying J bathroom. There are other reviews talking about the cat urine smell and the fish tank so obviously the owner couldn't care less. It's a shame as it's a great location, I bet the health department would shut them down immediately if they were to swing by. read more

How has it been six years since I last reviewed Akasha!?! It has been and remains my and my husband's favorite brewery in Louisville. Some of the current reasons why we love it: * Great beer, as always. I know there will always be something I want. Their gose beer is always a delicious choice. * Easy access to takeout food. We regularly order from either Feast BBQ next door or Royal's Hot Chicken further down Market. You can order via each restaurant's website and then just walk down to pick up. * Outdoor seating. Akasha added an enclosed seating area right off the parking lot. * Dog friendly. We regularly bring Millie and see dogs in there whenever we go, as well as the brewery's cat. * Kid friendly. We've brought our kids there earlier in the day on weekends. The fish tanks and ample games also help entertain them and us. * New seating. Akasha has new indoor seating options, with more couches and less high tops. I like the vibe this brings. Akasha is a chill brewery. It's been a part of many of our life events (birthdays, rehearsal dinner and baby shower). And we'd love it to be for many more to come. read more

Thanks to the brewery passport, I was able to find Akasha. It's in a prime location right in the heart of NULU. I've been here a few times and each one has been great. The people working are so friendly and always give their recommendations. My go to is there cherry beer which is in the sweeter side but it's a good option for people that are not typical beer drinkers. They have a big selections of board games to play and they are pet friendly! I've seen some really cute dogs there. The only downside is the parking. They do have a free parking lot but it tends to get full fast. Parking in NULU is terrible so this is the first spot people go to. Be prepared to either street park or pay at one of the other parking lots read more

Stopped in here during NULU Festival to get out of the rain. Was greeted very pleasantly. The bartender took great pride in explaining everything to us since first time there. We did a few tasters and locked in on our final choices. She was sweet enough to turn on the Wisconsin Badger game while we enjoyed our drinks. We chatted with her for a while while we were there. There was a book on beer brewing history; lots of good information and interesting. Enjoyed the laid back decor of the brewery and the simplistic decor but still entertaining to look at. I love this place. Nice and quiet with good music. I am not sure what kind of music that they play. They have good selection of beers. But it seem that they are retool or remodel their brewery. So their drafts are pretty much limited. But they have good beer which is Fehr's XL. You can't miss it. read more

Been here a few times and just now leaving a review. Located in an ever growing NuLu on Market St. there is a parking lot in front and there is always street parking. There is a Feast BBQ located next to the brewery that I have seen people eat inside however, I haven't gotten to try that yet and need to next visit. I have heard of this place on Yelp and Louisville Beer Snob Facebook page and although I have heard and read great things about this place, I was apprehensive. I have fallen in love with this place over the past few months. I love the whole atmosphere of the place. In my opinion it feels as if I'm in a lounge/basement type of place with a fish tank. I like to come here just to chill after work or to just get away from reality. My favorite beer here has to be their Phat Cat. They do have a good selection of sours that are good but Phat Cat tops my list. My last couple of visits I am happy to encounter fellow Beer Snob and Yelper Cherise behind the counter. We were just roaming around after driving from Asheville, and this caught hub's eye. It was later in the evening and fairly quiet. I typically like a Belgian, but the Abby Normal was like a brownie in a glass. It was Elon rich. I could have ordered the 5oz pour. I think I did 12 oz and it was hard to finish. That being said, we both liked it so much we got a bottle of the bourbon barrel aged version. The bartender was super personable and friendly. A cool hangout spot with easy to drink beer. Small parking lot, some outdoor seating and a friendly brewery pup that will come say hi for treats by the bar area. They do flights of 4: Auxier Ridge Saison - a little tart but pretty light. I don't usually go for the tart beers but this one wasn't too bad. Northern Brown - easy to drink and a good brown Ale. Little bit of a nutty flavor but pretty tasty. 12 foot fall Lager Oktoberfest - pretty standard Oktoberfest but also a pretty good flavor as well. Swipe Right IPL - Really light beer and a very slight hint of hops. Easy to drink and good for those who might want to Segway into an IPA. Overrall the beers are really easy to drink and light. I am still trying to learn about Louisville's brew scene, and I am so glad to have gotten to know Akasha better. They really lucked out with their location. You've got Feast, Royals and Grind that close??? Or, maybe THEY are the lucky ones... Regardless, Nulu is such a hip area, and it's great to have another brewery around. The people who work here are so friendly, and helped us customize our flights by our beer palates. I am pretty picky with beer, but I loved everything that was recommended to me! The beers I tried were the "Opportunity Cost" red ale, which had a great sour, yet fruity taste. I also had the Upland Cider, which was very light and was semi-dry. They have a lot to choose from on their list, and a wide variety at that. Aside from the beer, this place is just awesome to hang out at. It's a huge space, they've got a million board games, as well as arcades, chess, darts - and some comfy couches right in the center. If you're in Nulu needing a drink, come to Akasha. First off, thanks to Yelper Tim V from Louisville. His review turned me on to this brewery. We had just had dinner at the Mayan Cafe around the corner and decided to stop in at Akasha for some quality brew. When you walk in you get hit with malt smells in the air and your first sight it the chalkboard tap list. For any true craft brew fan you know you are home. Everyone is doing IPAs these days, but it's Akasha's variations that show great complexity and talent in brewing. In this case the Choco-Citra brown IPA is just a super tasty malt balanced by a IPA citra hopping. Very creative. I was also very impressed by the Roxy Stout. A motor oil dark around 7% ABV foreign extra stout with layers of flavor and frankly better than a Guinness. Service was great. Atmosphere fits for NuLu. Looking forward to coming back. read more

What an... odd experience. After talking to some locals/ friends who also came here, I learned I was not alone. Might explain why the place was empty. I walked in by myself, and it took a few minutes to be greeted standing at the bar. I had quite a few questions, and the answers were abrupt as if I was causing a pain. I had two beers brewed by them as a small sample, and both tasted extremely odd/ off putting. I ended up asking for a pint of a guest beer I knew was good. Not only was it $7 but it was FLAT. I went up to the bar after a few sips and only got stares from the beertender... who was socializing with two (regulars?) not sure... Anyway I left a $1 tip, a 90% full beer, and left. I won't be returning unless a group wants to go. Pros? Big tap list Nice location and interior Cons? Try before you buy, they will let you have "tasters". Pro Tip: You can order online from Grind and they will deliver to you, likewise at Feast, bypass the in-store line, go to the much shorter carry out line and and they will deliver. BS Road Trip - LOUISVILLE As we pulled into Akasha Brewing, Christina said she really wanted to try some sours, and guess what...thats exactly what Akasha is known for! Their sour list was vast, from PB&J to Dill/Cucumber/Lime to Blueberry/Lemon/Vanilla/Lactose...it's a tart lovers dreamliner! LOL...Christina's quote after trying the Dill sour called Pickle Rick, "oh that is delicious, Pickle Rick, that's good, that's good, oh my, oh my gosh!" I won't elaborate anymore, but you get the mental image...LOL And the experience didn't stop at the craft beer. The brewery is connected to Feast BBQ, so my sauce demands were satiated while we played board games from their massive game wall with rando-locals listening to 90s hits on comfy couches. The atmosphere was perfect with black&white classic movies on the tellie, darts, party string lights and even a random fish tank. Unique for a brewery, they served kombucha and local craft sodas. Akasha is sometimes my second living room. I can drink their beers for hours chatting with friends or reading a book or grabbing a bite to eat from any of the neighborhood's great restaurants before arriving. As something of a sour beer fan, I especially appreciate Akasha's taps are often full of a variety of choices and flavors of sour beers. In general beyond that, I trust Akasha's beers no matter the style. It's a great place for fresh draft beer. read more

Akasha is an excellent place for excellent things. They have a wide, wide selection of brews, knowledgeable staff to help you figure out which beer is best, and a clean location. Gentlemen prefer blondes, I am not a gentleman, but I do like their American Blonde. I try a different beer each time I come here. Depending on the situation the helpful bar tenders will let you try a sip of different beers to land on the correct one. The place also has some great historical and educational posters and art adorning the walls. I learned a little of the history of beer in Louisville just waiting for my friends to arrive. Two things cause Akasha to stand out to me. First, you can bring food to Akasha from other places. They offer packaged snacks but you can bring in your carryout from Grind, Feast, Royal's, or have food delivered. It's magical and pretty cool. I like to sometimes do this with friends who cannot agree on what to eat but agree that they'd like to get together. The other great thing about Akasha is how supportive they are of the local community. I've been there twice for get-togethers for charities or non-profits and they were generous with their space and time. You can't beat that. I am sure it doesn't hurt them to get butts in the seats but they don't have to be generous, their beer is good and people will show up for that. 2 words for what sold me on this place...Dog. Friendly. I came here with some friends to celebrate a birthday. Since they only do alcohol and no food they are allowed to let dogs in and boy do people know it and take advantage. The owner dog was milling around visiting everyone and I saw a few more pop in. Since they don't serve their own food you can bring in outside food. We brought in a huge pizza but there is also Feast just next door. I'm a huge fan of their Gose and they do fun flavors on special at times. I can here on a 2nd occasion with some friends and our dogs and we had a good time just relaxing and drinking on a hot day. These guys are the bomb!! So here we are, hungry and thirsty and arguing about where we are gonna eat. We wander by and it was still 20 minutes before they opened. DANG. We need booze. Luckily, one of the owners/brew masters saw our plight and offered to let us in. (Yay, beer!) So the beer was super tasty. There was a smoked stout that tasted like campfire s'mores. We ended up getting something from visiting brewery since all the dark beer was gone. Louisville knows a good thing! The owners told us about their business and their love of beer. Bourbon may be the main Louisville cash cow, but in recent years, a gauntlet of impressive breweries has emerged in the area. A surprising number are five-star contenders; pretty much all of them have at least some redeeming qualities. And yet, I can say with confidence that Akasha remains my favorite. Yes, even over Atrium (though if they're your favorite instead, I certainly can't blame you). They really tapped into a comfortable, crowd-pleasing kind of appeal here. The taproom is nothing fancy but has a straightforward charm, bolstered immensely by the welcoming and good-natured staff. Beers like the Fehr's XL lager and their Lemon Meringue pastry sour are about as universally appealing as craft beers can get. But if you're looking for more eccentric flavors, you can definitely find them: their IPAs in particular are distinctive, often foregoing typical hop-forward and hazy tastes in favor of more offbeat flavor profiles. My favorites of theirs have this "dry-hopped citrus" thing going on that's 100% up my alley. I also wouldn't sleep on their dark beers, with their Jitterbug coffee stout being my top pick of the bunch. I will say that a sweet tooth goes a long way here. Aside from the Fehr's lager, the usual suspects on their tap list skew sweet, with even the porters and stouts having a decadent dessert quality to them. But don't we all need a sugar rush now and then? read more

Because they don't serve food. But you can order from somewhere else, and if you're still hungry, that's on them not Akasha. Atmosphere: Casual. High ceilings. Lots of puzzles and boardgames. Akasha is a great place to grab a beer and hang out. As for the former, there's a pretty diverse selection, including ciders, gose, IPAs, kombucha, lagers and stouts. The staff is really friendly and knowledgeable, and will answer all your questions or get you a sample. There's no kitchen, but they'll let you order food from other area restaurants or bring your own. There's even a book with menus and phone numbers, if you're hungry. Pro tip: order some Royals Hot Chicken from down the street and wash it down with a nice dark beer. You won't be disappointed. Especially good after hitting the walls at Climb Nulu across the street. Basically, just go to all the Nulu businesses. The "dining" area is pretty big and open. There's lots of seating at tables, high tops and the bar. It's a great place for low-key events and group meetups. Or, if you're just hanging out with friends, there's a big selection of games (Cards Against Humanity, puzzles, etc.) that's free to use. read more

The first time I was here was for a birthday party but I didn't order anything. So I'm counting this as my first time here. Since it was a beautiful day, we each ordered a drink and sat outside. The Akasha red IPA 'Betelgeuse' was my favorite of the eight from what we sampled. The pours in their flights are also particuarly generous. You can sit at the bar, a bar-top table or in comfy overstuffed furniture. Another great nulu location located right off of market street! I'm really impressed with this area. Was with a group of friends just enjoying the day before a concert and someone said hey! Let's try some craft beer, and then we ended up at Akasha brewing! Very cool location, and dog and kid friendly which is important! Huge selection of beers! You are able to taste them before you commit which I like because no one wants a pint of beer that they have to plug their nose to drink! I decided on a tasty peach gose! Really really enjoyed how it was fruity but not Sickly sweet! There was a bbq option for food, which I though was cool that something so Delicious looking was an option! Then we all just hung out did a puzzle played cards and enjoyed our beers! It' was a great time. I hope to be back and take home some growlers and sample a tad more the next time I'm in town. This place is fun. It's your typical tap house with lots of beer, nothing but chips for food, and ample seating. But it also has a Galaga/Pac Man game [truly, a sign of worthiness] and a table stacked with board games. Sure, you can come in and get your growler filled, but it is also a good place to hang. This is one of my fave breweries in Louisville. It's somewhat sentimental because it's where my husband and I first came when we were visiting Louisville before we were married but now I just love it because it always has quality stuff. I like lagers and stouts and I have always loved the stuff they put out for both of those. They use a lot of fruit and other flavors to mix in. My husband is a fan of fruity beer and some of his favorite beers come from them. They do use growlers so if you have one you can fill it up here. The atmosphere itself is really fun too. Last time I was there they had a projector with an aquarium projected on the wall. Like most breweries they have board games and card games but they also have corn hole out front. Several times on the weekend there is a food truck parked out front for food but if you didn't want the food from the food truck there is a BBQ restaurant called feast in the same building that is incredible. My husband and I love going there to get food (and maybe a bourbon slushie) and then head over to Akasha to chill and drink a beer. Definitely check it out if you like a variety of stuff read more
