I grew up in the area coming here since I was a kind. As an adult, I have noticed yucky things and after my last experience, won't be going back. The owner (the guy who works at night) I have witnessed multiple times, scratching his head or itching his nose and then touching things and serving donuts without washing his hands or putting gloves on. If he do blatently ignores those basic sanitation things, I can only imagine how sanitary the baking is. We used to come here all the time 15 years ago and then we moved away. Well we were in the area and wanted to show our daughter a good donut and this place has changed at all. Most donut places the donuts are very dry or hard but this place hasn't changed in the slightest! The donuts are so soft and fluffy! It just melts in your mouth. I usually get a glazed twist donut (even over 15 years ago) and I can never find one that tastes as amazing as Donut Kings twist donut. Have you watched, 'The Donut King' on Netflix? Well I won't spoil the story, but the main character from Cambodia built a donut empire, which spread throughout California. This donut shop has some of the best tasting donuts I ever tried. They're like Krispy Kreme on steroids. We tried their maple bars (my favorite), maple bars with bacon, ham n cheese croissants, glazed, sprinkled, apple fritters, and bear claw. All were of the highest quality. When you want a donut at any time of day, this is the place to come. They have a wide variety of donuts, muffins, and lots of drinks. Staff is always friendly and helpful. Only negative was I got a Muffin and it was just over baked. Stick with the donuts and beverages! read more

Alright donut king, I gotta say I was skeptical but the fact it was busy at 8pm when I showed up was a good sign. I got an Apple fritter, bear claw and coconut donut. All three taste very fresh, very sweet but also well made. It's cash only so don't forget your coins. All three smacked pretty hard! This is an old-fashioned donut place, nothing fancy. You'll find the standard donuts here. They probably use the same batter they've been using for decades. I usually get donuts that any donut shop should be able to do well: * A chocolate or maple raised bar The raised donuts are also just okay, standard glazes and flavors. * A chocolate-chocolate cake donut  The Cake donuts are a bit on the dry side, again not a bad donut but also nothing to write home about. * A French Cruller with some kind of red glaze. Again these are okay. They do these three okay, not the best, but acceptable. If you're looking for a place that does donuts REALLY well, this isn't it, it's a place to get acceptable old-fashioned donuts. The staff are nice, but not overly-friendly. There's one older woman that's a bit dour, she's there because she has to be, not because she wants to and it shows. If it seems like I'm not fond of this place, it's because lots of donuts shops have gotten MUCH better making donuts that are moist and really tasty, you know, the places where the raised donuts almost melt in your mouth...this isn't that place. I only go here when I'm in a rush and just want a donut. When I REALLY want a great donut with amazingly friendly staff, I go someplace else that has the most amazing donuts and cinnamon rolls that have been written about in Esquire, but they are in Folsom, a bit of a drive but worth it. I had to stop at the UPS store which is in the same complex. It was closer to noon when I stopped in to grab some donut holes and a custard filled donut. As soon as I walked in and said hello, the young employee walked away without saying anything and started doing something on her phone which was being the counter off to the side. She then came out and I said hello again and advised what I wanted. She diff not proceed to get my order, and suddenly the other employee came to assist. That was poor customer service but it didn't take away from the taste or the price. The Asian lady was nice. I've been coming here for years. Have always loved the place. However, since the change of ownership, prices have gone up, and quality down. I bought 3 chocolate covered old-fashioned donuts (among others) this evening, and I have to say, I've had fresher day-olds. Oh, and the woman who helped me? Didn't look at me, no smile, no thank you, just as she's walking toward the register, "TEN". Wouldn't give me a receipt from the card machine, but the register. I'll be watching my account. My second time visit this community favorite (both times there were a number of regulars chatting amongst each other and with the owner). Donut shops are hard and I'd argue they fall into 1 of 2 main categories: Classic & Trendy. Trendy spots tend to be a little over-the-top, trying to compete for your attention. They do have innovative creations but you end up paying a significant amount more for that. Classic spots aren't trying to be anything fancy. They stick to the basics and if done well, they can outplay the trendy spots by miles. Donut King is one of those classic spots that does it right. You can get all your favorites and they're good!
