I didn't think much of this place- This palace of donuts. It is located right across the way from St. Mark's Church, so we promised the kids donuts if they didn't make too much noise during Mass. Oh, the joys of parenthood. Well, they were on their best behavior and we rewarded them with Donut Palace. They both picked donuts with sprinkles and chocolate. The donuts were priced under $5, which was good. I wanted a twisted plain, but they didn't have one. Why not? Nevertheless, both of the kids ate a few bites and then said they were done. The coffee choices were lacking but it is the Donut Palace, not the coffee palace. Next time they are good during church, we will head to Shipley's instead. I am not a skinny person. I don't think I've ever spit out a bite of donut in my life. But I did today: it was their chocolate cake donut. Someone said their donuts taste like they have bug spray on them. That's probably the best description for this donut I can think of. Try it. See if you can get past the first bite. I also had a "tiger tail" donut which was not bad. It was edible, at least. As you can see from other people's photos, the donuts do not have any color. They seem like they're cooked until they are JUST done, and no longer. Gross... The cheese, jalapeño, and sausage kolache was okay. Not as good as Shipley's though. Stopped by and grabbed some donuts and some Kolaches. The kolaches were great but the donuts.....The chocolate had a smell to it and all the donuts had a weird taste. Few things in the realm of food can count as a substitute for that San Antonio staple, the sacred breakfast taco. Donuts are among those few. This morning, heading out to the wilds of Government Canyon, and knowing that there are very few acceptable breakfast options along the way, we stopped in at this traditional little donut shop in the 281 corridor. It's just far enough off the freeway to have escaped the mercilessly crass commercialism on view there, tucked into the endcap of a little strip center filled with stores of a decidedly quirky bent. We immediately rejected the kolaches. They appeared to all be of the pig-in-a-blanket variety, which holds no attraction to someone like me, who has been to West and eaten sausage-jalapeño kolaches of heavenly consistency, even day-old. I never cared too much for the link sausage wrapped in what seems to me to be refrigerator-case biscuit mix, and, I'm sorry, but a little jalapeño ain't gonna make that enough-better. We both went instead for the breakfast-sandwich croissant, which despite being re-heated in a microwave was quite good. The croissant itself was flaky and buttery; the egg, too, tasted of butter; the cheese was, well, ordinary, and the sausage (patty, not link) was reasonably good. I tried an apple fritter, too, which had the delicious texture of a cinnamon pull-apart bun, but almost no apple flavour to it. My friend Rick tried a chocolate glazed donut, which he pronounced better than Krispy Kreme. Considering that he dislikes Krispy Kreme, that could either be a plaudit, or the damnation of faint praise. The coffee had a remarkably strong nut flavour without being in the least acidic or bitter. That alone would justify a recommendation for this little hole-in-the-wall, with its two tiny tables. This place has the best kolaches you'll find on this side of town!! The bread is moist and sweet instead of dry n yeasty like at Shipleys donuts. The best part, they also had BOUDIN SAUSAGE kolaches which are fanFREAKINGtastic!! I didnt realize how huge they were so i ordered a small jalapeno n cheese sausage kolache. But since i was pretty much full, my hubby had no problem eating that plus his large jalapeno n cheese sausage kolache PLUS 2 blueberry donuts, which are delish too. Im excited to try this chocolate honey donut they have. read more

This used to be our go to donut place until today. Our feelings about this place has been steadily declining and today is the last of it. I pulled up in the drive thru just as another customer was leaving. The dude proceeds to tell me he has a delivery guy waiting and it will be a few. I said fine as long as it wouldn't be too long I'd wait. It took 3 minutes, so no problem. I asked for (1) cinnamon cake, (1) cherry, (2) plain cake, (1) maple, (1) zebra and a dozen donut holes. He comes back and tells me there is no more maple. I told him, fine give me 2 zebras. He brings back a bag with the cinnamon cake and cherry, (1) zebra and the dozen donut holes. And was ready to charge me. I told him I need another zebra and the 2 plain cake. He comes back and tells me he only has (1) plain cake. So I said fine give me the one plain cake then. He comes back with a plain cake and then wanted to charge me again. I reminded him about the zebra and he disappears with my card and then shoves my receipt, card and a bag with the zebra and says "here just take it just take it".. Like I'm getting something for free because of his incompetence. We'll be finding a different neighborhood donut store now. read more

I awoke last Saturday morning with a craving for fat pills (doughnuts). I noticed Donut Palace as we were driving over to drop off my wife at the Bountiful Baskets drop off location. On our way out the The Pearl we decided to stop by. I got my son a strawberry with sprinkles on top. For me, I saw that they had apple fritters. My decision was made! We also shared some doughnut holes and a milk for him and coffee for me. They have a fantastic fritter. Randy's in LA (you know the place with the iconic big doughnut on top of their building) makes the best apple fritters that I have ever had. Donut Palace's is a close second, and a damn good substitute since Randy's is 1300 miles away. They serve Community Coffee as well so that was a good cup of joe. Along with doughnuts they offer some savory breakfast options featuring homemade kolaches and crescent breakfast sandwiches. I have to order a kolache next time, as well as one of those excellent fritters! read more

The donuts here are very good, the owners are very friendly, and they have very good kolaches and breakfast croissants. They serve community coffee and have a large cold drink selection. I have had Shipleys and river city donuts and donut palace is just as good if not a little better. read more
