We were there for breakfast and waited 45 minutes and the waitress didn't even check in with us or refill our water glasses. I had never walked out of a resaurant before this experience. I will say this is abnormal, we've had better experiences in the past, the food is really good, but I'm not sure we'll ever go back. read more

The place was filthy! The tables had paper built up under the wobbly table, that was so dirty and moldy! The waitress, Toni, was so loud and never shut up! The breakfast took so long to make, we almost left. The food was good, especially the home fries. We will never go back, unless they clean the place. Went for an early breakfast with the family. There was only 2 workers. (The cook and the look waitress). So the wait time was pretty long. Luckily the waitress was very attentive to our table. When the food came out, it was alright. Potatoes and hash browns were very good. Got the steak and eggs. Steak was good! Stop in if you'd like a retro looking diner ambiance and nice tasting food. I was appalled to see that one of the employees accosted a take out customer, embarrassing him in front of all the customers, saying something about his friend and her daughter. Then the daughter walked in, and the scene went on. Utterly unprofessional, uncalled for, and unacceptable. In my opinion, the employee should be relieved of her responsibilities as an employee, for conduct unbecoming a service industry employee. This behavior can not be tolerated. Today I had a meeting at D.S.Diner ( Donut Shack) in Penn Hills and the meeting lasted for 47 minutes. I ordered a cappuccino and so did the person I had the meeting with. We met there in the past 3x's prior and had breakfast or lunch depending on the time of day. Personally, I patronized them at least 5x's a year for the past 8 years and spent a minimum of $30 plus $10 to $15 tipping. After being there for 47 minutes, the woman that cooks comes to the middle of the diner and asked if we were going to order anything? And in the same breath said we cannot sit for a hour and just order coffee. The person I had a meeting with replied " ok ". He had another meeting at 11 o'clock and was going to order something for that meeting but since the cook said what she said he then decided to have his second meeting elsewhere. There are no signs saying that you have to order food in order to sit for a hour or a minimum purchase. They were not busy (only 5 people in restaurant) I will NOT be back nor will my meeting partner. THE COOK WAS RUDE AND UNPROFESSIONAL! This diner is cash only without an ATM on-site so I would advise people to be prepared. The atmosphere is a fun, retro feel with memorabilia from the 40's and 50's adorning the walls. The BLT I ordered was pretty good but definitely needed more of the B. The fries are fresh cut and taste better than your average fries. The waitress was fairly pleasant but my dining companion and I definitely felt rushed out although we were the only people sitting in the section. It was an alright experience but I don't think I'll be going out of my way to visit again. read more

We are regulars here. However, it's our first time dining during the COVID pandemic. The business provides hand sanitizer for each table; limits occupancy. If you're not comfortable with NO mask, stay home! Staff do not wear masks. I don't think the increased number of patrons was considered when they expanded. They did not increase grill size. We waited over 30 mins for two omelettes and toast. Food was good but service was just "okay." We'll definitely reconsider dining in next time. read more

I love this lil diner! Been here several times over the years, but this is the first time I could actually check-in since using Yelp. The Penn Hills address was correct, but the map location said it was in Squirrel Hill. Therefore, it said you were too far away to check-in while inside the establishment. I messaged the people at Yelp about and it appears they fixed it since I could check-in today! I guess you could say I put Donut Shack on the map lol. I think all but once I've eaten breakfast here. Always leave here full and happy! The owner is a very nice lady and good cook. I like the nar seating area where you can watch your food being cooked. Prices and portions are great. I like the Ultimate and Big Ben breakfast meals. Not much parking out front, but some in the rear I believe. Love the nostalgic decor inside of the classic cars and such. Has a little corner dedicated to Marilyn Monroe and Elvis. Often a senior citizen hangout. I haven't had their donuts before, but they gave a free one once to my girlfriend's daughter. Misleading name of the business. Went there specifically hoping for homemade donuts, arrived before 9am to find only 14 donuts left. I excitedly asked if they were made there this morning and found out that actually they are brought in from the donut connection down the street. Disappointing to say the least! So I paid an increased price for dumb donuts I could have gotten (& a bigger selection) down the road. I can't speak to their homemade breakfast as I didn't try that, but certainly don't go there looking for homemade fresh donuts! read more

I went to the Donut Shack this past weekend to grab a quick bite to eat while I waited for my car to be serviced across the street. The place may not look very impressive from the outside, but the interior has the look and feel of a 1950s diner. I sat at the counter and gave my order, and was able to watch it being prepared right in front of me. The two waitresses kept my coffee cup full while I waited for my meal and were very polite and attentive. I ordered the typical breakfast of scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon, and toast. I was blown away by the quality... it was one of the best breakfasts I have ever had. The portion sizes were generous, the eggs were rich and cooked to perfection, the bacon crispy and full of flavor. Perhaps the best part of the meal was the hash browns, shredded but served in the style of a large potato pancake. Its a truly unique take on a classic breakfast dish that left me throughly impressed. I would highly recommend this "best kept secret" to friends, and I will be back for breakfast as often as possible! read more

Despite the name, if you're looking for donuts, go elsewhere. They do not make their donuts on site, and hence they're not always fresh, though you're generally OK in the morning. The place is known more as a breakfast dinette, with a small old time counter where you can gab with the locals or catch up on the morning paper (if anyone still does such a thing) while awaiting your breakfast. read more

I love this place. They cook everything directly in front of you. Go early on a Sunday, the lady who cooks is much better than the weekday cooks. This is the best local diner in the area. Our family loves this place. Just a note that the address is correct but it is in Penn Hills not Squirrel Hill as noted. We eat Sunday breakfast here every week.
