I was super excited to have a new cake shop in Alameda but the cupcakes I tried here really missed the mark. The shop is cute and the cupcakes look cute, but those are all the good things I can say. First, it's super weird for a cupcake shop to sell their cupcakes chilled if they are meant to be eaten at room temperature. It's a little frustrating I cannot buy one to eat right away. Also, it really gives the impression the cake either was baked a long time ago or it's not baked on site, even though they say they're baked on site. If they are fresh baked on site that same day, why on earth are you ruining them this way????? It's pretty basic food knowledge that refrigerating cake dries it out and makes it go stale faster, you'd think a professional baker would know that and not allow their cakes to be stored and sold that way. Anyway, I did give them the full fair shot by waiting until the cupcakes were room temperature before eating. The cake itself was dry (which I was already expecting given the refrigeration) but also dense and clumpy. It was more like cheap cornbread than cake, not a good mouthfeel on the texture. I tried 4 different flavors - the only one that had any flavor in the cake that came through was the chocolate, the rest just tasted sweet but lacked depth and complexity of flavor. The icings were ok but nothing special. Texture of the icing was fine but again not much depth of flavor at all, just sweet. If I were blindfolded and you fed me these cupcakes, with the exception of the chocolate I would not be able you tell you what flavors any of them were. I'm a cake snob, so take that for what it's worth but overall this bakery was extremely disappointing. I've had significantly better cake made from a Duncan Hines mix. read more

Sometimes I buy cupcakes and think 'mine are better, I should have made my own'. This is definitely NOT a place that made me feel that way. Even my 19 year old loved all 6 flavors that I bought; my 19 year old who told me 7 years ago that he doesn't really like cupcakes/cake much and usually only eats maybe half a cupcake in an attempt to understand why his mom loves sweets so much. I loved the variety offered and each were uniquely flavorful. I'm only sorry that it took me a year of living in Alameda to finally go by and pick some up. My fiancee and I tried some of their cupcakes recently, flavors in Cookie Monster, Oreo, lemon, velvet, peach, funfetti. They have a ton of flavors but I think my favorite was peach and Cookie Monster. The presentation of the cupcakes are really nice. The owner really has an eye for decorating each flavor in a unique way, using different shapes and sizes of sprinkles, placing decorative pieces, and varying the color and texture of the icing. The product is placed inside a clear plastic box with a logo of the shop on it. We gave some to my parents and it was a really nice presentation as a gift. The cupcakes were nice and moist as well. We decided to ask if they do wedding cakes, as we were really impressed with their cupcake presentation. And they do! Their pricing is really good and the owner is really professional, replying to our emails promptly. We are excited to work with them and can't wait to see how it turns out! read more

It seems like this place just opened. While walking by it with my daughter, I got a strawberry cupcake. I really wanted to like it as I love cupcakes and the staff was really sweet and friendly. However the pink cake part of the cupcake was sickly sweet and the icing was hard like the cupcakes were placed in the fridge instead of being fresh. However the taste of the icing itself was okay. Also I love lemon flavored baked goods that are naturally flavored without artificial coloring. However their lemon cupcakes were an unnatural neon lemon color, which did not look appetizing. I'm hoping this review along with some other honest reviews will help improve the product. So...despite this somewhat negative review I still plan to go back in a few months to see if they improve their cakes into tasty treats. read more

Here's what you should know about me. I am a cupcake connoisseur, which is a nice way of saying I'm a cupcake addict. So I've tried cupcakes all over the Bay Area. I am also gluten and dairy free so am always on the hunt for a good gluten free/vegan cupcake that is moist and flavorful. This place is legit! They only opened a few weeks ago and it's run by a sweet husband and wife team. They currently only have 2 gluten free cupcakes at a time (I think they switch out the flavors weekly which is good for me since I am only allowed one cupcake per week) but this is a good ratio for such a small shop. And they are so delicious that you'd never know!! I am so happy that this place is right around the corner from me and I highly recommend. Go show this new place some love! read more

Wow the cupcakes are outstanding so delicious. My favorite is the chocolate Oreo v gf. I love the rich chocolate flavor taste great with French vanilla coffee. Lemon is my second favorite and third is peaches and crème. Ill go back to try the other flavors. There's a variety of cupcakes to choose from. So good. They had a variety of vegan options which is rare in Alameda (maybe non-existent? Well, not anymore) My daughter tried the lemon bar and chocolate cupcake and I got the smores and carrot vegan cupcakes. They all had perfect texture, balance of flavors, and were perfectly moist. I love it here! The interior makes me feel like I'm in a sweet carefully curated comic book with colors that pop to match the flavors of the week. I've found out that the flavors change every two weeks so go today because your favorite may be gone when you go. It happened to me but I found a new favorite- well several new favorites. The owners Tom and I believe his wife were so kind and hospitable. I came in with my toddlers who of course were excited at the very sight of sugar and they hosted us with such grace. I highly recommend this bakery on service alone. The cupcakes are delicious and my personal favorite is the confetti and the red velvet. Rebekah was amazing! My sister has a gluten allergy and a birthday that is shared with Christmas Eve. My Mom had forgotten to order a cake so I was calling around to different bakeries 3 days before Christmas Eve trying to find a place that would allow us to place an order. I was getting turned away at every call I made, until I found Doodlecakes. Though they were already super busy, Rebekah was kind enough to squeeze in our last minute order. She was very helpful and not once seemed to rush us or be frustrated with our late order. We chose the gluten free s'mores cake and it was phenomenal! Rich in flavor, sweet but not too sweet, one of the best cakes by far (including cakes that are not gluten free). We will absolutely be ordering again from Doodlecakes. I picked up half a dozen cupcakes from here for my newborn's one week "birthday" party. My wife and I tried the cinnamon toasty, red velvet, cookies and cream, choco coco, oreo, and vanilla matcha - all were fantastic! Well i heard through social media of a new small black owned bakery opening in Alameda. I wanted to wait to see the reviews. After seeing a couple not so great reviews, I thought ok I need to check them out for myself. Hardly any of them commented on customer service or cleanliness. Well, first off the owners are so sweet! Excellent customer service greeting me as I came in. I saw that they were sold out of a lot of items. Owners apologized and learned that I need to get there early to get my pick! I could tell they were working very hard just the two of them! The place was spotless, so clean!! I was able to snag a peaches and cream cake jar and a lemon cupcake. The owners let me know that they are best served room temp. I couldn't wait though, I ate them in the car!! Amazing! So moist and delicious. Every bite was packed with flavor, and not too sweet. I was worried it would be too sweet reading some of the reviews. But, Nope! It was just right! And that's saying a lot, because I don't like super sweet things. I ordered a cake here for my sons 2nd birthday party. It was a farm theme and although I felt it could have been a little more detailed for the price, (210 including tax) it was still a cute cake and the kids got a kick out of eating the fondant made animals. I got a 2 tier cake, 8 inch round with a 4 inch on top. The 8 inch was a strawberry cake with vanilla frosting and a cream cheese frosting filling with strawberries. We decided to go with lemon for the 4Inch with the same frosting and filling and sort of wish we did a different flavor cake or did strawberry for it also. The cream cheese frosting tasted more like frosting than cream cheese which we weren't expecting but for the cake to have been picked up the night before the party and refrigerated overnight most of the cake was still moist. We weren't the biggest fans of the lemon but the strawberry was pretty good and was not so sweet! From the pictures on yelp I was expecting the cake to be a bit taller, but it was more than enough for my 30 guests. Overall I am satisfied with my order from Doodlecakes and would recommend them to others, I would also recommend to pass by and do a cake tasting before placing your order so you know exactly what you want your cake to taste like!
