I've been following Angel cakes on instagram for a while and been really wanting to try their lavender flavored cupcakes. When I saw they had a lavender cheesecake cupcake and I was free, I knew I had to make a trip out to try it. The cupcakes were moist and sweet. Very first time here, we pass by this cute store often. Noticed a TGTG bag here so decided it was our time to give it a try. Thought it was be a great treat for the kids after practice and a new to go spot for us. First walked in we weren't greeted. Notice someone just sitting until someone else came out and said I was here for a TGTG. I said oh this place is so cuuuuute. Again no response. With the mystery bag you never know what you're going to get. The value was there and the cupcakes are so soft and flavorful! Unfortunately the flavors in our box were not for us. I am all about unique flavors- we received 2 Mexican chocolate with chili (spicy and tasted like red hots candy) and a wasabi ginger (not a fan of either of these in general) cupcake- this is something I couldn't share with the kids at all. We tried the raspberry (not the meyer lemon one) and wasn't sure what the flavor was but we were not a fan. I can tell why these were unsold flavors and left for TGTG. I'm all about reducing food waste but those flavors were hard to swallow. With the combination of customer service and location, we wouldn't come back. I have followed Angel Cakes for years and when I got engaged almost 2 years ago, I knew I wanted my desserts from there. Last summer/ fall? They had their cupcake tasting event which me, my now husband, and sister in law bought tickets for. We were on a mission to find our favorite flavors but it was so hard to choose with almost 40 kinds! After much debate, we landed on maple bacon, guava, and chocolate salted caramel as well as mini brownies and cheesecake bites. They also made our two tiered vintage style heart cake for us to cut into. I felt bad that I had to keep changing our order to include GF/ VE options and then again to add more cupcakes bc our guest count kept going up. They were very friendly and easy to work with even with the multiple changes. My event coordinator also said their delivery was seemless and they were very professional and courteous. The cheesecake was the star of the night. I only had one small bite and when I returned to the dessert table later it was all gone! I was told it was the first thing we ran out of. Knowing they are closed on Sunday, I scooted out the door on Saturday afternoon. Score #1 was the ridiculously convenient location a few blocks from the freeway exit. Score #2 was the ample free parking available in the immediate area - yes, I hate paying for parking to get food. Score #3 was the pre-packaged dozen mini cupcakes in mouth watering flavors* - saving me time in trying to select amongst the ample flavors and count. The extensive flavor varieties are impressive but presented a dilemma for me as too many options can be overwhelming, so the prepack was the golden ticket! The cute store ambiance is reminiscent of old time candy stores and the efficient service was exactly what I needed. Upon arrival staff chit chatting ceased and attentive service was extended. The staff immediately offered the prepack in a cute organized box right out of the frig. I was in and out in no time. A dozen mini cupcakes was plenty for the instructor and the small yoga class. Now the fun part - the reactions of my yoga class mates and instructor enjoying the mini cupcakes was priceless. The bite size flavor explosion was perfect post class as folks were in heaven with each bite, asking where I got them from and wanting more. Saw this on my way to get something work related. It caught my attention because it looked to be housed in the old Gingerbread house restaurant that was there many years ago. I'll keep this brief. It's the day before Thanksgiving. I beefed it and forgot to buy a pumpkin pie for dessert on Thursday. My usual bakeries are sold out, and there's no way I want to cope with a day-before-Turkey Day trip to Berkeley Bowl or Whole Foods. And I'm over the sugary, not-pumpkin tasting disappointments I've had from Safeway. Then the husband mentions he saw slices of pumpkin pie at a downtown Oakland cafe that were from Angel Cakes Cupcakes. I thought Angel Cakes was strictly cupcakes, but since I absolutely love every cupcake I've had from them, I excitedly gave them a call asking if they still had any pumpkin pies left. "Yes!" was the answer. They took my name and processed my credit card for a pie right over the phone, and I was able to pick-up my pie before closing. The pumpkin pie was in a deep dish tin, smelled gloriously of spices, and tasted amazing the next day. It was cold, silky, in a flaky crust, had just the right amount of sweetness and blend of warm spices, and most importantly it tasted like pumpkin. One of the best pumpkin pies I've ever had! Bought some cupcakes for a friend's birthday since they were open on Sunday. We ordered a dozen different cupcakes. Since they had many different flavors available, we only repeated two cupcake flavors. The cupcakes were boxed nicely and we were on our way. When we got back, we added some dragon toppers and were excited to try some. I tried my first cupcake and was immediately wondering if there was a filling in the middle I was unaware of. Unfortunately what it ended up being was that it was cooked perfectly on part and the other part was still moist and undercooked. I'm not sure how that happens (but I'm also not a baker so maybe this is an issue that happens) but I showed my friends and they also said it looked a little mushy. I decided to try another cupcake since they get such good reviews and I'm not sure if it was the bad experience with the first cupcake, but I didn't enjoy the second cupcake though it was fully cooked. I've driven by Angel Cake several times on the way to Alameda but haven't had the opportunity to try their cupcakes until this weekend for my son's 100 day party. They have online ordering available which was convenient and easy to use. We ordered 2 mini cupcake samplers which included their most popular flavors: funfetti, chocolate, Meyer lemon, and red velvet. Usually with mini cupcakes, they tend to be dry, but not these! All the guests complimented on how delicious the cupcakes were. Angel Cakes's Instagram posts their daily flavors each day that I did not see listed on their website. I wish there were more flavor options available for online orders, otherwise it's best to drop by and see what to have in store that day. They also do custom cakes aside from cupcakes. Going to a party, I decided to get cupcakes from Angel Cakes. They are a small-batch bakery operating since 2008 specializing in cupcakes, cakes, cookies and cakesicles. They have a menu of over 120 flavors because they love experimenting in new and unusual flavor combinations. They are located on 5th St. off Brush St. on the edge of West Oakland and Jack London Square. It's a busy street with traffic heading towards the Alameda Tubes and 880. But parking was easy right in front of the bakery which was the former Gingerbread House. With it unpainted wood sidings, it does look like a gingerbread house. I got a sampler box of various flavors, which only three flavors were duplicates. Not only were the cupcakes tasty, each were works of art. They were beautifully decorated. All the guests at the party who tried the cupcakes enjoyed the cupcakes and complemented on how pretty they were. Tried the lemon cupcake and wow, the lemon flavors were intense. Delish! I've been on the search for delicious cupcakes in the Bay Area. My partner's birthday was around the corner, so I decided to furiously search through Yelp to find a dessert option. And long and behold, I found this place!! I tried to preorder in advance, but it was a lot easier to just go in person. You get to choose an assortment of flavors. It was 1/2 dozen for $19 or a dozen for $36. Individual cupcakes were $3.50 each so it's better to buy in bulk. All of these were full sized. The mini cupcakes weren't an option unless you preorder and you only get the choice of one flavor. So I chose the following: -red velvet -meyer's lemon -Vietnamese coffee -strawberry and cream -dark chocolate raspberry -forgot the last one. The Vietnamese coffee and strawberry cream were my favorite. Although red velvet is popular, it tasted a bit chalky to me so I will pass on that next time. Overall I really like the flavor of their cupcakes. The cream is simply delicious, flavorful, and balances the cupcakes well. I'll definitely come back to try other flavors. One reason I'm knocking a star down is staff didn't seem as friendly. When I go to a cupcake store, staff are usually helpful and jump the gun to tell you the most popular cupcake.
