Whenever I write a review, I devote 3 stars to the place itself, ease of parking, and the food. I devote the an entire star to customer service. The food was decent, (not the best but good enough). My grandmother died yesterday. Today I was feeling melancholy and running late for work. I stopped by Doodles five minutes before they closed craving pancakes. No one looked annoyed that I was that person who comes in five minutes before closing. I ordered the Jonny Cakes to go and a coffee. The coffee carafe was running low, so a very nice woman offered to replace it with a new one. A few minutes later, another woman smiled at me, handed me my to-go container and said, "All your sprinkles and awesomeness are inside." I wish someone would say that to me every day. Now, as I sit in my office and eat delicious pancakes, strawberries, whipped cream, chocolate chips and sprinkles, I feel a little more loved and a little less sad. Great first Yelp event for Lexington! The staff at Doodles was friendly and the chef was very personable. I enjoyed the background he gave of the restaraunt and how the do grown local first foods. The beniet (so?) were awesome! I loved the hot brown and cheese strata samples and the French toast was to die for. Awesome way to sample their food. Paul and I had breakfast this morning at Doodles. Based on so many good Yelp reviews, we were both excited. The best part of Doodles was service. It was fast and friendly from beginning to end. Unfortunately, the food and atmosphere were not nearly as good as the service. Paul had one of the specials, which was a waffle with a bourbon apple sauce. The dough of the waffle was quite good, but it was served with such a dearth of sauce and whipped cream that it felt lacking. In addition, there was no hint of apple anywhere. I had the meat omelette with a "biscuit" and fried potatoes. The crisp fried potatoes were definitely the highlight. As for the omelette, the eggs were clearly good quality and the amount of cheddar cheese was perfect. However, frying good eggs in oil, rather than butter, and adding floppy bacon detracted from the taste. What I really took issue with was the "biscuit," which was not a biscuit at all. It was a rather odd piece of tasteless bread that was made worse by being tossed on a greasy grill at the end. Ugh! We also tried the beignets, based on reviews, and were sorely disappointed. Paul and I came to the conclusion that they made the beignets from their "biscuit" dough. What we bit into was a super dense, difficult to chew and swallow, mass of dough. Ugh, again! As I mentioned, the atmosphere at Doodles is less than stellar. At 9:15 on a Saturday morning, the place was stone cold. Seating is uncomfortable and awkward simply because there is not much of it. Poor ventilation leaves diners inhaling smoke generated from cooking and then leaving the place smelling like a greasy spoon. Doodles is probably a great place for hungover college students with lousy senses. If you do not fit that description, I suggest going elsewhere. I would like to give a 2.5 star rating, but since Yelp requires a whole number rating, I am bumping it up to 3 stars due to service. read more

Had a wonderful time sampling the Doodles menu. The chef gave us Doodles mission statement so to speak; we really enjoyed listening to how and why they operate local first. We will be heading over this weekend for breakfast. Their Baileys Irish Cream French Toast sample, is to die for. I cannot wait to have a regular size portion and another cup of their roasted coffee. This service station turned restaurant has a cool vibe(if you can get over walking outside to use the restroom) and all the right pieces to be a great place. They have a lot going for them already. My main issue is that the food could be better. I experienced a lot of build up that led to a pretty nominal food experience. I'd love to see more flavor breaking through their dishes. I hate feeling the need to add salt in an attempt to pull out more flavor. One high note were the beignets. I definitely recommend a basket, but maybe ask them to go a bit lighter on the powdered sugar. I'd go again and would recommend someone try it out. read more

We went here based on other Yelp reviews and I don't think it was quite as great as we expected (based on other reviews), or maybe we've just been fortunate to have really great breakfast elsewhere. We got there about 8:45 on Sunday AM and didn't have to wait which was great, based on others feedback. I got the classic egg in the hole dish (biscuit) and it was ok, nothing much for flavor in the eggs and I've had better biscuits. A novel dish, yes, but tasty - ehh. We had an early morning appointment at U.K. around the corner. As I was yelping breakfast places, I told my husband to pull into a parking lot. Doodles popped up on the list and we happened to be sitting in their parking lot! My husband is from Texas so we were a little nervous about their claim on southern food, but they did not disappoint. You walk in, checkout the menu, decide on your food, pay the cashier, take a number, grab your silverware/drink cups/napkins/jelly/syrup and head to a table. There's a drink station at the back where you help yourself. Someone drops off your food when it's ready and picks up your plates when you're done. We had the hash, omelet (with everything except vegetarian sausage) and a side of gravy. Every potato was crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside, cooked perfectly. Both meals were delicious! The gravy was amazing! We would definitely eat here again, everything was cooked right and nothing was greasy! read more

It's an old gas station made breakfast/lunch venue. Expect long lines on weekends and at peak lunch hours. The patio is great and the menu is exactly what it says. It's a little pricey for the amount of food, quality and atmosphere delivered, but it's all very serviceable. Especially for the location which is at the North end of downtown where there is little competition. read more

Doodles is our favorite place to go for breakfast/brunch here in Lexington. My husband and I have been going there for months now and have never had a bad meal nor a bad experience. The food is consistently great - always hot and tasty. My favorite is the beef hash while my husband loves the gravy and biscuits. Their menus always have a good variety of options to choose from. Regarding seating and parking, parking can be tight, unfortunately. But a full parking lot also lets you know that it's a popular spot! You will also see a lot of walk ins, so if you are exploring downtown, you can easily just stop in for a meal. Whereas I will admit that the seating is somewhat limited on the inside - it honestly adds to the overall atmosphere of the place, with a variety of table options for two, four, or larger groups- especially in the winter months, but once it gets warm enough, the patio is opened up and you can enjoy your meal while enjoying the beauty and warmth of the day. Finally, as good as the food is, the staff that works there are the proverbial "icing on the cake." I don't think I have ever been to a restaurant where the staff are as friendly and welcoming as the staff at Doodles. You are greeted warmly from the moment you enter until you leave. It starts while giving your order - you are greeted with a smile and a helpful attitude if you have questions. The staff that bring your food to you at your table are extremely pleasant and helpful. You never see anyone who is just "standing around" like you can see in some places. Here, they all are busy, cleaning tables, bringing food to customers, answering questions, etc. And a great thing we've noticed- they all seem to share the same attitude of helping one another with the ultimate goal of helping their customers have a good experience. The same people that you might see who brings food to the table might turn around and help their coworker clear a table or perform some other task. I make it my mission each time I visit Lexington to stop here for breakfast. Let me list off a few of my absolute favorites: beignets, shrimp and grits (with ham), the cure, biscuits (so good!), and the French press. It can get busy on weekends, but the wait has never been too long. I've never waited more than 15-20 minutes. You order at the counter, fill your own drinks, pick a table, and then they bring you out your food. I usually sit on the patio. Prices are reasonable for what you get! read more

This was my last stop on a weekend trip to Lexington and what a nice way to finish. The line was to the door when I arrived but it moved quickly. The hostess explained that tables were changing over soon, and she even brought out a basket of beignets for everyone who was waiting. I think I was seated and had my food (which gets brought out quickly) within 30 minutes. I ordered the shrimp and grits without ham and a biscuit on the side. The biscuit was nicely halved, buttered and lightly toasted on the inside. As far as biscuits go, it wasn't too heavy (i.e. a perfect accompaniment). The tail-on shrimp were well-seasoned but not overly peppery or spicy. The grits were a little light on the cheese but the tomato gravy and green remoulade brought balanced sweetness and herb. I wish I could have been able to try more on the menu. They had some great sounding daily specials. Not sure if anyone else has noted this, but they now also serve bellinis, mimosas and bloody mary's. read more

I like to ease into the day with my coffee on my deck, so I don't usually do breakfast out. I've been to Doodles three times. The pancakes are OK, nothing out of the ordinary; a very few sliced strawberries garnished them. (Mine at home are far better, and more creative.) I've had only one of their egg dishes, a southwestern creation which was quite good. The beignets were OK, but I didn't expect anything akin to Cafe du Monde in New Orleans. Our excellent local San Marco coffee is served, and you can help yourself to an additional cup. One thing I took away from Doodles is WindSong blackberry jam -- outstanding. They told me I could purchase it at Kroger or Walmart. Everything seems to be fresh and homemade, and I appreciate their creative breakfast dishes. I had the same opinion as many of the other Yelpers. I really had high hopes for Doodles but was kinda let down. I have gone back about three times jus trying to get into it more since brunch options are pretty slim in town. The concept is great local produced food and out of the norm menu options however the delivery is kinda lacking. I have had my order botched every time I have eaten there. When the food finally arrives it is ok at best, not really worth the time or money I am putting into it. I think it is a defenite try and I wouldn't refuse to go if someone invited me just not everything you hope for. read more

Exactly what the doctor ordered! After a long weekend, a group of us came to Doodles to grab breakfast before heading home. I kept it simple and ordered "The Cure" ... it was perfect for getting rid of my hangover! I'm not sure what they did with the bacon to make it taste so scrumptious but it was probably the best bacon I've had in a long time. Perfect crispy slices that weren't too crunchy or soggy. It's was like they had a team of elfs patting all of the slices down with napkins to get the grease off. We also got an order of The Pigs and Puffs which were just OK ... maybe I'm just spoiled (or non-cultured) but I just think that all beignets should all taste like they do at Cafe du Monde. But they did top it with 4 slices of bacon so that did make it a little bit better. Everyone else had no complaints of their orders either! It was a beautiful day and there's a nice patio outside that you can also sit and enjoy your morning / afternoon. One thing that none of us could figure out was their whole seating / ordering system. When you arrive, orders are taken at the counter and you find a seat. However, when it's busy, you have to take a number first. When we arrived, the dining room was filled so we assumed there was a wait, which turned out to only be 15 minutes. Promptly after ordering, our food arrived in 5 or 10 minutes. However, at this point there were plenty of seats available but still a wait outside. not sure if they just wanted to keep people from having to wait at the table for their food or just want leave you on the edge of your seat. So I pulled up to a 1930s era gas station and order bacon and beignets. Yes, pork wrapped donuts. And they were great. My wife order shrimp grits. And they were great. My kids ordered BLTs. And they were great. There was no faulting the food at this place. As I may have written before. It was great. The restaurant itself was nicely done too. While obviously an old gas station they didn't seem to hide from it. It had open floor plan, a few community tables and an open kitchen which always inspires trust. The prices weren't horrendous considering the quality of food. These folks aren't aiming to fire off grand slam breakfasts here. But, alas, the only drawback was the assumed hipster ethos. Maybe it's the ethos of the 20 something service person. Pretty thin girls with no smiles, great complexions and dead eyes showing polite disinterest with just a smattering of contempt. But just keep bringing the bacon on beignets, toots, and I'll be happy. read more

This charming new restaurant will be a regular spot for me when I'm in Lexington. The fare is southern staples with a fresh, classy twist: po' boys, "dirty" shrimp and grits (with tomato gravy), spicy fries (really just wonderful, cross-sectioned potatoes) with aioli, and even New Orleans-style beignets are all full of flavor and hearty without being greasy. They also use local, organic ingredients. Prices were very reasonable, and service was friendly too. (We went with my 10-month-old niece and the staff was happy to accommodate.) Very casual: Order at the counter and then your food is brought to your table. Since it's a remodeled gas station, the bathrooms are outside, around back. In all, a great addition to the Lexington restaurant scene. read more

This place was so good. Went here while i was on lunch from work with a coworker. The staff were very nice and the service was fast so we could get back to Chevy Chase before our hour was up. I had one of their specials--the Salmon BLT. The salmon was cooked perfected and had a good crispy crust on it. Their spicy flat fries were awesome as well. I had to see what the buzz was all about. Convenient parking, and plenty of seating are always a plus. When you walk in the door you see the menu on the wall and then you order your food on the right. You get a number and they bring your food out to you. Mine took 20 minutes at lunch time, so if you are in a hurry this may not be the best place to eat. I had the chicken salad sandwich and it was great. I got the cole slaw along with my sandwich, and the slaw was exceptional. The bread was good, but didn't seem super fresh. I'd like to see some more options for bread other than white or wheat. It would be great to see some Italian sodas, or some type of create your own soda that doesn't have high fructose corn syrup. I had an Orangina and it was great, but I think the right kind of sodas (other than Pepsi products) would really compliment the menu. If I'm downtown at lunch I will definitely be back. read more

Doodles is a very popular and unique brunch restaurant. You can feel its strong personality even before entering the establishment just by reading its signs. This place puts a heavy emphasis on supporting the local community and using organic products, all without undermining the quality of their food. I was very satisfied with both the portion size and the taste. However, the real highlight of this place is their fast service and unique menu. Doodles operates somewhat similarly to a fast food joint. You come into the establishment and order by the cash register before finding a seat. The food starts cooking immediately after the order, and is served within minutes of sitting down. I love it. The menu is displayed on a huge blackboard that is easy to read. On top of traditional breakfasts such as the cure (Eggs, meat, toasts, and sides), or the regular omelets, you also see some unique dishes like huevos rancheros and dirty shrimp and grits. Oh, did I mention they have a decent sized parking lot so you don't have to worry about parking? Overall, I really enjoyed this restaurant and I think it can easy be on my top three choices for a weekend brunch in Lexington. read more

Bottom line as the first line: Super delicious breakfast spot with authentic beignets (born and raised in Louisiana, so I can attest). Need to expand the menu a bit! IMPO (in my personal opinion), Doodles is the best breakfast spot in Lexington -- and since this seems to be a trend, that's saying a lot. The food is creative without being overdone, and it's fresh and hot. To me, the beignets were the shining star, even comparing to Cafe du Monde in NOLa. (Full disclosure: I don't like any other types of fried dough.) Portions were generous, food was delicious. The only down side could be the need for even more mouth-watering choices. For those who love to return to a place for a favorite dish, you won't be disappointed. Those with more adventurous tastebuds will eventually crave something new.
