So I pulled up to a 1930s era gas station and order bacon and beignets. Yes, pork wrapped donuts. And they were great. My wife order shrimp grits. And they were great. My kids ordered BLTs. And they were great. There was no faulting the food at this place. As I may have written before. It was great. The restaurant itself was nicely done too. While obviously an old gas station they didn't seem to hide from it. It had open floor plan, a few community tables and an open kitchen which always inspires trust. The prices weren't horrendous considering the quality of food. These folks aren't aiming to fire off grand slam breakfasts here. But, alas, the only drawback was the assumed hipster ethos. Maybe it's the ethos of the 20 something service person. Pretty thin girls with no smiles, great complexions and dead eyes showing polite disinterest with just a smattering of contempt. This charming new restaurant will be a regular spot for me when I'm in Lexington. The fare is southern staples with a fresh, classy twist: po' boys, "dirty" shrimp and grits (with tomato gravy), spicy fries (really just wonderful, cross-sectioned potatoes) with aioli, and even New Orleans-style beignets are all full of flavor and hearty without being greasy. They also use local, organic ingredients. Prices were very reasonable, and service was friendly too. (We went with my 10-month-old niece and the staff was happy to accommodate.) Very casual: Order at the counter and then your food is brought to your table. Since it's a remodeled gas station, the bathrooms are outside, around back. This place was so good. Went here while i was on lunch from work with a coworker. The staff were very nice and the service was fast so we could get back to Chevy Chase before our hour was up. I had one of their specials--the Salmon BLT. The salmon was cooked perfected and had a good crispy crust on it. Their spicy flat fries were awesome as well. Doodles is a very popular and unique brunch restaurant. You can feel its strong personality even before entering the establishment just by reading its signs. This place puts a heavy emphasis on supporting the local community and using organic products, all without undermining the quality of their food. I was very satisfied with both the portion size and the taste. However, the real highlight of this place is their fast service and unique menu. Doodles operates somewhat similarly to a fast food joint. You come into the establishment and order by the cash register before finding a seat. The food starts cooking immediately after the order, and is served within minutes of sitting down. I love it. The menu is displayed on a huge blackboard that is easy to read. On top of traditional breakfasts such as the cure (Eggs, meat, toasts, and sides), or the regular omelets, you also see some unique dishes like huevos rancheros and dirty shrimp and grits. Oh, did I mention they have a decent sized parking lot so you don't have to worry about parking? I had to see what the buzz was all about. Convenient parking, and plenty of seating are always a plus. When you walk in the door you see the menu on the wall and then you order your food on the right. You get a number and they bring your food out to you. Mine took 20 minutes at lunch time, so if you are in a hurry this may not be the best place to eat. I had the chicken salad sandwich and it was great. I got the cole slaw along with my sandwich, and the slaw was exceptional. The bread was good, but didn't seem super fresh. I'd like to see some more options for bread other than white or wheat. It would be great to see some Italian sodas, or some type of create your own soda that doesn't have high fructose corn syrup. I had an Orangina and it was great, but I think the right kind of sodas (other than Pepsi products) would really compliment the menu. If I'm downtown at lunch I will definitely be back. read more

Bottom line as the first line: Super delicious breakfast spot with authentic beignets (born and raised in Louisiana, so I can attest). Need to expand the menu a bit! IMPO (in my personal opinion), Doodles is the best breakfast spot in Lexington -- and since this seems to be a trend, that's saying a lot. The food is creative without being overdone, and it's fresh and hot. To me, the beignets were the shining star, even comparing to Cafe du Monde in NOLa. (Full disclosure: I don't like any other types of fried dough.) Portions were generous, food was delicious. The only down side could be the need for even more mouth-watering choices. For those who love to return to a place for a favorite dish, you won't be disappointed. Those with more adventurous tastebuds will eventually crave something new. Get a locally roasted press of coffee, a basket of beignets, and some johnny cakes! mmmmm... We went early and beat the crowd, but unfortunately weren't as excited about the food as everyone else seems to be. I ordered The Cure, eggs scrambled with cheddar, cheese grits, bacon and biscuit. I grabbed blackberry jam at the counter and was ready to chow down. My husband ordered the Croque Monsieur waffle that was on special with bacon. When our food arrived, it was piping hot and the bacon was cooked to perfection. My eggs, however, were over done and the cheddar on top was just in a cheese blob off to one side rather than mixed into the eggs or on top. The cheese grits were also SO bland, I just didn't see the appeal. The warm biscuit was delicious - flaky, buttery, and perfect with the blackberry jam. My husband's waffle was nice, more subtle for his taste, but I really enjoyed it. Overall, the breakfast was just fine, but not super exciting. Great brunch place! Came to Lexington for a wedding and lots of locals recommended this place. It looked super busy with a line out the door but their service is FAST. It's a mix between an upscale fast food place like Panera and a regular sit down restaurant. You stand in line and get to the register and order there. Then they give you a number and you sit down while they bring you the food. Very efficient process. As for the food, it's your standard southern comfort classic breakfast. We started with the beignets, which came in a basket of four. Warm, fluffy and delicious. A great starter. You can walk up to the counter and get some fresh jams or honey with it too. I ordered the little doodle, which is like an egg in the middle of toast but instead it is a biscuit. Because im pregnant, i had to order the eggs fully cooked. If thats the case, i would not recommend this dish because it was too dry. My side was cheesy grits, which were decent and not too salty. My husband ordered the biscuits and gravy. Delicious gravy with just a hint of spice. His side was the fried potatoes which is your classic hashbrowns. I gave this place a four star because no flavors blew my mind away but still very good staple brunch foods. Also, everyone who works there works hard and is friendly. LOVE THIS PLACE. This is definitely our favorite find since we moved out to Kentucky. I got the Dirty Shrimp and Grits and my husband got Tara's Tasty Hash which is their version of a corned beef hash and they were both delicious. The GRITS were really fresh, creamy, and smooth. The blending of they're spicy tomato sauce, fired shrimps, and creamy/buttery/cheesy grits was absolutely great. My husband added ham to my shrimp and grits (i think for an extra cost) which I don't think was necessary because I thought the delicious shrimps were enough salty to compliment the creamy cheesy grits. Now, my husband's corned beef hash was seriously the best I've ever had... ever. I hate it when my husband orders this dish at brunch restaurants because I'm always disappointed at the mush of a dish that comes out. But I was REALLY surprised to see Doodle's corned beef hash. It looked meaty, I could actually see bits of vegetables in the dish, and it wasn't too salty like most other places make it! I normally don't even like corned beef hash but Doodle's corned beef hash was delicious. I would definitely recommend this place both of those dishes to everyone! A couple of unique things about this place: - you order first and then you take your number to any seat you choose and they bring the food out to your number. - their BISCUITS are so good! They come with all dishes but we actually ordered another one after our meal because they were so good. They're light and soft (not at all dense like most other biscuits) and then they cut them in half and fry them on a griddle with butter right before they serve them so they have that outer ring of buttery crunchy goodness. So good with just a little honey or jam! - there is all you can eat jam available in tiny paper cups at the counter. I think the jam is home made because of how they serve it. - fresh honey also available at the counter. This honey is kind that has little gritty bits in it, which I love because it makes the honey seem more organic. - their menu on the weekends is different from their menu on the weekdays! - they're only open until 2pm but if you go at around 11 it's not as busy so you can get seated and have your food almost immediately. read more

It was very crowded and had my friend not told me to look at the menu as we waited for a table, I'd never had known we were going to order at the counter. I don't care for crowds, however, seeing how many people were there waiting to eat I figured it must be pretty good food. I was happy to see the menu full of locally produced foods and local fresh eggs. I tried the "veggie omelet" and added bacon to have a spinich mushroom cheddar and bacon omelete. It wasn't life changing but it was good and the people serving were all very nice. The coffee was fresh and hot and went well with the fresh beignets. I never had one but it was wonderful. I liked that they had a community table. I thought that was a fun creative way to use their small space for seating. Came here for a late lunch with some friends. They are local foodies and think highly of it. We were not disappointed. Not only was the food very tasty and fragrant but there are a nice variety of choices at different prices. We also enjoyed the very pleasant outdoor seating environment. Puppies are welcome here and for us that's an added plus. Carnivores, vegans and vegetarians should be able to find things that they would like. Our friends go to meal here is the hash that is an unusual blend of sweet potatoes, parsnips, broccoli, eggs and maybe some other vegetables with toast. I didn't try it but it smelled amazing. Vegetarian omelette had fresh recognizable veggies and was not swimming in oil. Cheese grits yummy! Biscuits quite good. Dining partners had dirty shrimp and grits ( also good) and beef hash. Everything up to this point had been great and that's when it ended. We got the huevos rancheros and eggs benedict. While the portion size was average neither dish had barely any seasoning.
