After hearing from several people how great this place was I had to check it out. I went on a Sunday morning and figured it would be busy and it was. No big deal. The staff did a great job of moving people through the ordering station. After we ordered and seated yourself outside on their patio area I got my coffee ,which was great, and we waited for our food which came out very quickly. No more than 10 minutes after ordering. Everything up to this point had been great and that's when it ended. We got the huevos rancheros and eggs benedict. While the portion size was average neither dish had barely any seasoning. I'm from the deep South where you can almost not over season. Doodles is on the opposite end of the spectrum. I know many people love this place but it's not for me. read more

I ordered the Huevos Rancheros and it was simply a ton of black beans on two soggy tortillas, with a teaspoon of sour cream, covering the lime wedge, so you couldn't use the lime nor scrape off the trace of cream. Two spoonfuls of tasteless salsas and two eggs. You might as well just eat a can of cold black beans. I noticed other patrons with fruit dishes that looked tasty. We came to Doodles on a Sunday around 11am and the line was out the door. Had I been by myself I would've went elsewhere. There's not a huge waiting area so it can be tight quarters when you have to wait. I feel like there has to be a more efficient way to order too but enough about that. I ordered the veggie omelet with cheese grits and toast. My boyfriend ordered Lillie's egg doodle, and I got an order of beignets to share. My veggie omelet was tasty, there were jams to sample near checkout that I put on my toast, I really enjoyed the blackberry jam. This was my first time trying grits and they weren't my thing. My boyfriend said he'd come back to try other things but wasn't impressed with the egg doodle. I have to say the beignets are where it's at. They were sweet without being TOO sweet. What a fun place for a great brunch. Ate here with the wife and her folks, and everybody had a fantastic meal. I had the opportunity to try the Egg Doodle (eggs in a basket taken to whole new heights, with a biscuit in place of toast), the Caprese strata, and the Oatmeal Brulee (steel cut oatmeal with a "crisp raw sugar brulee". Everything was really solid. Even the oatmeal was good enough that I would actually consider preferentially ordering that occasionally, though it's no Egg Doodle. Service was fairly quick and friendly, and despite the line out the door for brunch, turnover was quick enough for our tastes. The cafeteria-style of ordering and self-serve beverages juxtaposed with wait-staff serving food makes this a slightly confusing mish-mash, but that also adds to the charm. This is definitely on my short list of breakfast places in Lexington, and will probably be my go-to place for taking out of town guests. read more

I came here a couple months ago with a group. I ordered the corn beef hash which was just okay, but not great. Portion sizes were good - definitely more than I could eat comfortably for brunch, but the taste wasn't great. I thought the corn beef was too salty, toast over-buttered, and soggy rather than crispy. Other people got the quesadilla - which was huge. He barely ate half of it. Can't comment on the taste of it. One really nice thing that the waitresses did was let us get coffees to go when we had just ordered refillable drinks. Overall, this place was okay. When I eat in Lexington, I always support my local economy. This dining experience disappointed highly as there was nothing local nor comforting and it was unconscionable that they served it. I ordered the shrimp po-boy salad. It arrived. The plate of limp yellow lettuce was drowned in a bland cream bottled dressing with a pile of frozen breaded shrimp piled on top. The tomatoes were few and bland as well. The sweet gherkins that garnished the salad were from a large catering vat of pickles and didn't make sense for the dish. Highly disappointed. read more

Fun and funky breakfast joint. Menu is funky and edgy - not your typical diner menu or food but located in what may be a former gas station! A short walk from downtown hotels I enjoyed the scenic neighborhood stroll. Apparent abuts Transylvania Univ campus. I had both beignets and and egg and bacon dish. The eggs were served in a biscuit - ala British style etc the toast with a hole in the middle for the egg is made with a biscuit. Very good, very fresh food. Love that Lexington really does the fresh, local, no antibiotic, no hormone thing. Every restaurant seems to do this. We both got "the cure" because we wanted a traditional breakfast but there were a lot of dishes I would try if I lived here. I didn't want cheese on my grits but wow! Were they good and the bread is clearly home made. We had beignets too cuz we are New Orleans fans and they were messy and hot. Just like they should be. Service was friendly and very fast. I was invited to go there with a friend and he had warned me about the awkwardness of waiting on a table while the person sitting finishes there food. Once you get over the initial awkwardness the food is great! They have a diverse menu with lots of local products. The service is great: it's almost like "make yourself at home, grab whatever you need, but if you can't find something let me know." Also, you can order a french press of coffee. And it is soooo good. And soo worth it. I also ordered take-out of the breakfast potatoes one morning. This was my 'dish' for a work brunch. Yum! Yum! Yum! Last time I was at Doodles I had the shrimp grits - my first since moving to the south. They were utterly divine. My second breakfast at Doodles did not disappoint. I enjoyed the breakfast sandwich on a rich and buttery biscuit. They serve it with a little side of fruit so you can pretend that it's healthy. The beignets are also delightful. They're served hot with powdered sugar. Their staff is also super friendly. They make you feel like they actually like that you're at their restaurant. They're funny and welcoming. read more

The food here is good enough that I've considered stealing it on several occasions. I've never followed through, but maybe one day.

This was a first for me-- a order & pay breakfast place with crafted dishes. The small lobby gives you the ability to review the menu and specials board, and then place your order at the counter. Moving along the counter into the main dining room, you grab your silverware, housemade jellies, and your drink cup for coffee, soda, tea, etc. We chose to sit on their beautiful patio -- it was a little warm that morning so bonus points for having large fans running outside! Within a very reasonable amount of time, our food was out. I got the biscuits and gray special with a side of cheese grits-- none of it disappointed. Delicious, fresh, and farm to table.
