My husband and I had an event in Lexington and I Yelped for a breakfast place! So glad I did!! There was a long line, but you wouldn't have known it because of how they seat you. It's set up as a counter order and the person at the cash register tells you where to sit and gives you a number. If they are busy, you sit at a community table and we have no problem with that way of doing business. Even though you don't have a designated wait staff, you are still taken care of by all of the staff. It is a really nice neighborhood restaurant that I would recommend!!! I had the Lillie's Egg Doodle. It was incredible. And I'm very glad that I ordered a biscuit on the side because they are so good and their blackberry jam is incredible. One of my favorite lunch spots in Lexington here. I used to always get the Hot Brown Quesadilla, but today I mixed it up slightly and ordered the Caprese Quesadilla (I like quesadillas okay?). The line to order took about 15 minutes on a Sunday morning but it did not seem too long. The customers and staff all seemed happy to be there. I came in exhausted and with a headache but left feeling more settled and very glad I came. Our meal started with a really good coffee press and beignets. The beignets were not quite as flavorful as those from in Cafe Du Monde New Orleans but the powdered sugar added such a sweetness that I liked them every bit as much. The main courses were very good, Huevos Rancheros for my wife and an omelette for me. A side of cheese grits was a welcome addition. When the outside is closed - it is a very busy experience. I got pretty angry because we had a party of four, so I went and grabbed a table while my party ordered. I was then told to get up, as they only allow you to sit until after I ordered. As a result, a couple in front of us got the table, and we had to wait an extra 20 minutes for a four person table. I do not mind waiting, but there was clearly a two person table leaving as this happened, and they easily could've sat there. I also did not really enjoy my food. I ordered the orange juice and watched the cashier poor tropicana from a jug into a glass. It was not even cold. I then got the eggs and one side was pretty burnt. This is my favorite breakfast place in Lexington! All of the food is local and fresh! One thing they are known for are the beignets! They are as good as the ones in New Orleans! I used to come a lot to Doodles! Despite how tiny the parking lot is, I've always found a spot too. The wait can be long but not extremely long on weekends. I'm used to it by now. I always ordered the egg in a hole. Two biscuits with eggs cooked in them. It was my favorite! Until one day, the eggs weren't cooked all the way. Some of the white was a bit raw... Waited in line to order, once you order you find a table. All tables were dirty and it was really hard to find a motived server to clean it for us. Once food arrives, it's self serve for silverware and drinks. The fountain drink station was dirty and the ice machine didn't work well. Two of the sodas were out and no one was motived to change it out for us. They kept asking some oneself. My wife and I stopped in to have lunch with a friend as we passed through Lexington on our home to Columbus, Ohio, one Friday. When we arrived, the place was hopping, and both inside and outside dining areas were packed. Their menu had a lot of good things, but I was not really that hungry. So I ordered the soup and sandwich of the day -- a cup of squash and tarragon soup and a grilled cheese. My wife got the chicken salad salad (not the chicken salad sandwich). I have to say that my food was incredibly bland. The soup was broth-based with chunks of squash, and the sandwich was a couple of slices of Swiss cheese on grilled wheat. I thought the squash soup would be more of a puree, but oh well. My wife's salad was chicken salad on a bed of greens with some fruit on the side. Again, ok, but nothing great. Maybe the fact that I wasn't so hungry influenced my reaction, but I think I would have to be really pretty hungry to find the squash soup and grilled cheese even remotely appetizing. One other drawback: the bathrooms are outside. Like, literally to the side of the building the way they are at some gas stations. On a 95-degree day, having to go outside and around the building to a stuffy restroom is less than ideal, in my opinion. So, will I go back? We pass through Lexington several times a year on our way to my parents' home in SW KY, so the opportunity to return exists. Whether I will take the opportunity or not really depends on my wife. If she wants to, I will; if not, then no. If I travel alone, I will likely find somewhere else to dine. I give it three stars because the ambience was nice enough and the people who work there were nice as well. read more

You order and pay as soon as you come in then have a seat. The atmosphere was great and the food smelled better. The food arrived at our table in reasonable time. The line moved quickly and we were offered delicious beignets as we waited. I ordered the vegetarian omelet with cheese grits and a biscuit. All of it was so delicious! We came to Doodles for Sunday Brunch and yes, there is a line but it does move fairly quickly and smoothly. The eating area is small (there is outside dining but it was a chilly morning so this was not an option). On nicer days, the outside would be great. The staff was quite friendly and helpful though very busy, they didn't seem stressed at all. We had a larger party and they didn't blink about accommodating us. We split a couple of orders of beignets and they came to the table quickly and were piping hot, which is how you want them served! Very good with the house coffee. I ordered a brunch special, the Irish Creme French Toast. Great brunch item, the toast was almost like a breakfast casserole but the large piece of bread was moist and not overly sweet. The Irish Creme flavor was just right, giving a good flavor but not tasting too "alcohol-y". The dish came to the table fresh and hot. The crust was my favorite part. Others in the party had another special, the Guinness Fudge Brownie Waffle. The pieces of brownie atop the waffle were fabulous. Gravy & Biscuit were delicious, sausage in the gravy which was nicely seasoned, served over a large freshly made biscuit. Eggs were served with this and they were fine but the star of the dish was the Biscuit with Gravy. Doodles serves the standard brunch drinks, though we didn't order any we observed some being prepared while waiting and the Mimosa's definitely contain adequate champagne (vs. those places that give a splash in the OJ and call it Mimosa).
