Well I wasn't sure what to expect but I'm glad we stopped. I'd say this was a 3.5 star for food and 5 star for service. I have to start by saying we like burgers and this wasn't on our top ten list or anything but it's a good place for a meal. The atmosphere is laid back and the employees are so friendly. Our waitress was new but was amazing! I wish I could remember her name. :( She was very very patient as our party of six changed the order a couple times. She answered all our questions with a smile. She kept the glasses full and checked on us regularly. She definitely made this a good visit. On to the food... the menu had plenty of options for everyone. The kids meals were good, the ham and Swiss came out as a sandwich and not a slider so it was bigger than expected. I don't know if this is normal or not but I'm not complaining. The kids chicken came out with four pieces of boneless chicken and they were closer to a popcorn chicken than a boneless wing so it wasn't as filling as the ham and Swiss but ok for kids with smaller appetites. I ordered the jalapeño stuffed burger. The presentation was good and the portion sizes were good. The patties were big but kind of bland on all three of the burgers we ordered. The fries were good, the mac and cheese was good, and the potato salad was ok. Overall we were happy with our decision to try this place out, next time we'll try out some different menu items. read more

Have to put fans on the table to keep Flys off your food . The bill was over 100 and we all got burgers! The burgers wasn't the right size we ordered medium got small but charged for mediums. The roast beef was awful nit rare at all . Dooleys has really went down hill . Very nasty and don't get what we ordered.. it's a fly house sooooo many nasty flys.. and 35 bucks for a tip ??? He!! Found this place thanks to online reviews when we were driving through town during lunch time on our road trip. The food was delicious! We got the pimento cheese dip with home made potato chips for an appetizer. My husband got the veggie melt with a fried egg. He highly recommends adding some of the house potato chips for a nice crunch. I got the bbq bacon cheese burger. All of it was amazing, we would highly recommend. read more

This is my second visit to Dooley's. Both visits were tasty. The mushroom and Swiss burger lassoed me both times. And don't miss their hand cut fries! Rude staff. They either profiled us as "libs" or they are just terrible at their jobs. They gave us menus and told us they would send a server out to take our order. We sat outside figuring out what to order off the very confusing menu. Then I went back in, thinking maybe the hostess forgot about us. She had. She came out and said that we had the wrong menus, because now it's after 9. She offered us apps. We were very hungry and said we'd go elsewhere. We ended up eating Wendy's in the car, and then due to my GERD, we drove home and missed the Northern Lights. I ordered the hamburger with the ham and cheese topper. I ordered it medium and it was cooked to medium and was absolutely extremely moist and flavorful. I grill several cuts of prime beef and I will tell you that they are spot on in what they do here. The staff are very nice as well as they also offer a variety of beverages And on their own brewery as well. I highly recommend anyone to come here for their lunch or dinner. Consistently juicy and delicious patties and I like to pile mine high with toppings like egg, mushrooms, grilled onions, cheese, pickles etc... they have an extensive list for you to customize your burgers. We sat outside because it was cooler than inside. Waited 45 minutes and had to ask where our food was. Supposedly a back up in the kitchen, which we were never told. Then all the food came except my French dip. When asked, some excuse was made and I finally got it...cold and hard! Upon asking for our ticket the waitress flew into a rant about how rude the paying party was and THREW the ticket on the floor. After trying to ask what was going on, the bartender jumped over the bar and began to harass us exclaiming that we would not be rude to her wait staff! Awesome first time here! Great location with indoor and outdoor seating. The staff was friendly from the time we arrived till the time we left. We sat at the bar with Paige and she was friendly, attentive, and sweet. They carry a wide selection of local craft beers among other choices of beverages and the food was excellent. Althought the food at Dooley's rates higher than 3 star, the reason for my 3-star review is the fact that their t-shirts have a beautiful tree on them. The kicker? There's a frikkin NOOSE hanging from the tree! Now, I'm not from the south so I certainly appreciate the fact that the culture here is different than what I'm used to. However, a restaurant that is supposed to welcome the public should be neutral territory. If I were here with a friend of color, I would have been mortally embarrased. As it was, I was still embarrased, mortified, and saddened to realize what I was looking at. My only regret is that, when talking to one of the owners (nice guy), I hadn't noticed the noose yet so didn't have a chance to ask him its meaning. But, to me at least, the meaning came shining through. I'm sorry for the people of the South who profess to be God-loving, fearing souls. I'm very sorry for the faction of that society that still believes not everyone is equal. My father, who was born in 1917, taught me that 'blood is red and money is green. That's all you need to know about welcoming people.' He was a smart man and I'm forever grateful I was born and raised in maryland. Dooley's - if you read this review, please take the words into account. Get yourself another design. As it was, we had planned on lunch there today but will not return. We CANNOT return. My grandparents loved this place years ago, so when we visited Wilkesboro recently, we went to this place. It has very much gone downhill since the pictures online. It took us several minutes to be sat at a table even though they were not busy. Once we were sat, the table did not fit us. We were elbow to elbow just so the people on the ends did not elbow the wall we were up against and had table space on the other end. Also, our table in the back had views of the servers doing their chores, bartenders throwing bottles loudly and constantly, and a massive fly trap hung above our table that was full of at least a hundred dead flies. The poor server did not have a tray so it took five minutes to get drinks since she had to make at least three trips every time we got something. Even though the restaurant only had about six tables, service was slow. Our server was very nice and the bingo-night atmosphere was fun and the fries were amazing. That's the only good parts. They automatically add a 21% gratuity then the online payment service automatically adds another 15% tip. It's difficult to be okay with such a large tip when the server does not refill my drink the entirety of the dinner and ignored us after we received our food. Service pretty much disappeared after dinner was served. Food was just okay: portions are huge, and therefore, expensive, and it was hard to have an appetite when every time I looked up I saw the bright blue and yellow fly trap. The best way to describe Dooley's is it's like "Cheers" on the TV show. In Wilkes County it is the place to go. Young, Old, important or just passing through. Everyone comes to Dooley's. The portions are huge and very reasonable priced. The smallest burger is 1/2 pound but you can choose 3/4 or full pound burgers. They grind their beef themselves and it is very lean and slightly seasoned. Their fries are hand cut and in large portions but don't be fooled. Burgers are only a small part of their great food. They have a "Rare Roast Beef" sandwich with fresh horseradish sauce on marbled rye just like in New York. Yes in sandwich portions just like all their others of up to 1 pound of meat! Most interesting of all is the entire menu can be ordered GLUTEN FREE since everything is made gluten free (just ask for gluten free buns). Then do what experienced Dooley's diners do - pick a piece of gluten free homemade cheesecake (or local apple pie) from their over 35 varieties (different each day) of decadent cheesecakes. If you're inclined to imbibe they have a great bar and also serve their sister restaurants microbrewed beer (TwoBoros Brewery from across the street) and so much more. It's been an institution in Wilkes for years and years. So if you're traveling to App State for a game or heading down the mountain to Winston, it's worth the 1 minute drive into downtown of Hwy 421 to check it out.
