Door to Door followed through with everything they promised. The container was dropped off right on time at my Boston apartment and picked up on time as well. When it arrived in LA, I got a phone call to arrange a drop off at the LA apartment. The container arrived basically on time. They actually couldn't drop it off on the day I wanted because they were too busy but they had time the next day. I blame this on the September 1 phenomenon. Aaand nothing in the container was damaged upon arrival (no water damage etc.). Two things: 1) The container does seem kind of ehhh when you first get it. It's wooden and covered with a tarp and the inside was kind of dirty with leaves/cobwebs. It would have been nice if it was cleaned prior to drop off. 2) Pack your things well! Luckily our boxes were well cushioned, but things definitely shifted on the drive. read more

I have to say that I am a big fan of Door to Door. I had to move from Boston to (? destination unknown at the time). I needed a versatile and reasonably priced option offering both storage and shipping. Door to Door was great --- super helpful, very professional, and patient. They got permits for me and blocked off the space in front of my apartment for easy access. Fast forward 1 year later: upon deciding to move to San Francisco, it was so easy to call them and schedule a drop off. The driver came to drop off at my specifically requested time and was very pleasant. ** The only bummer was that apparently in San Francisco, I had to get my own 'no parking signs' vs Boston where Door to Door took care of it. ? This did lead to an annoying (and expensive) cab ride to a special construction store in the middle of nowhere for a few $2 signs. For the PRICE and CONVENIENCE, I highly recommend Door to Door. The storage is cheaper than city storage and the shipping is much cheaper than commercial movers. (my storage for one Pod was approx $66/month, and the shipment across country was maybe around $1500) Also, depending on your renter's insurance policy, your stuff could also be covered without having to get extra insurance. (NOTE: I would make sure you place any clothes, linens, pillows, in plastic airtight containers, as the crate can get damp --- so anything exposed could absorb that damp smell. My soft goods that were in plastic bins or garment bags were fine. But I threw a few pillows in a steel cabinet that was in the Pod, and I had to throw them out upon arrival. I didn't store a couch or mattress, but keep that in mind.) ** I move long distance a lot, and I have to say I'd use Door to Door again (for the bulk of my possessions) --- in combo with Fedex Ground (for more immediate smaller shipments). read more

Other than realizing how much useless crap you have accumulated, is picking a moving company! Trust me, I never thought I would be writing a positive review for a moving company. But here are the details of my move from Boston to St. Louis and why I gave Door to Door 4 stars: 1) Checked out UBox and PODS. PODS was way too expensive. UBox never sent me a confirmation email and I could not get in contact with the Boston office. Therefore, I canceled UBox (side note: UBox charged me $167 and it took me weeks to finally get the erroneous charge removed. They are on my sh**list). 2) Called Door to Door and told them the lower price UBox quoted me. They matched the lower price and gave me movers in St. Louis for free. This made me happy, especially when it turned out to be 102 on move day. 3) Door to Door always picked up the phone. Maggie and Julie were great help during my move. Julie helped get me an earlier move in date so I didn't have to sleep on the floor and Maggie helped secure my lower price. Picking a moving company can feel like choosing the lesser of the evils and I guess Door to Door would be the least of those evils. I would use them again. They don't get 5 stars because I hate moving so much that anything related to this subject automatically gets a deduction. Cross-country moves are never a walk in the park. This is my 2nd time doing this (the first was in 2002, when I moved from DC to Sacramento), and I have to say Door To Door is the way to do it! It made my move from Los Angeles to Boston so easy! It's way more convenient than having movers truck out your stuff. I simply reserved 1 container (it's just me, so it was easy) to stuff all my stuff in. I had my bed, clothes, random other stuff, random furniture, a filing cabinet, about 8 boxes of books, book shelves, tv, and 2 computers (...yes, I am a nerd). They gave me a week to stuff all my stuff into it at my leisure in LA. I locked it up with my own lock, and they shipped it off for me for about $900 (for one container). And a few weeks later, it arrived in Everett at the storage facility, where I had another week to unload. Typically if you have your own house, they can deliver the container to your driveway for you to load up, and pick it up when you're ready to ship. Then they deliver it to your place wherever you go for you to unload. Unfortunately, my 'hood in LA had narrow streets and I had no driveway to use, so I had to drive my stuff to their facility by LAX. And here in Jamaica Plain at my bro's place, there's also no where to drop off the container, so my family helped me unload at the facility in Everett. Also, the dang snow storm right before Christmas delayed my shipment by a few days. The only downside to this place is the limited hours during the week. They don't open on Sundays, and during the week they close at 5 p.m. So if you're starting a new job, like I did, it's way hard to take off in the middle of the day during the week. But Paul, the manager at this facility is AWESOME! He came in special on the weekend to open up for me and my brothers to move stuff out. In addition to Paul, another plus is the scheduling of the arrival of stuff. I remember using movers (Atlas) in my east to west move in 2002 and I never knew when my stuff would show up. They gave me a ball park date. Same with my move from Georgia to DC. Annoying! With D2D, you know when your stuff with arrive... if a blizzard doesn't happen! read more

Recently moved to Texas from Massachusetts and Door-to-Door made it a breeze. After doing some research, and calls around to different moving companies, Door-to-Door stood out as a company with not only a reasonable price, but excellent customer service. They were honest and fair with pricing and time. The pods look quite small but can fit a surprising amount. We had about as much furniture as a small one bedroom apartment (futon, bikes, lounge chair, mattress/box spring, to name a few) and we had room to spare! We only used the move option but I trust that the storage option would be good as well. Deliveries came on time (early even!) and were treated with care. Would highly recommend and use again! TIP: Buy the lock (extra $10 or so). It is sturdy and eliminates something more to think about while you are moving. read more

I went through a nightmare scenario where the condo association I lived in would not allow a cube to be stored on street overnight. Condo association director would not budge, despite the necessity for me to move from MA to MN. Door to door went way above and beyond, going out of their way to arrange a same-day drop off and pick up. Unfortunately, the movers were unable/unwilling to accommodate a morning move, and thus I still had to park the cubes a mile away. Not for lack of trying on the part of Door to Door, however, and their exceptional customer service and initiative are to be commended. Thank you to Terrell especially for his help. Also, the pricing for Door to Door is light years better than ratpack, U-Haul Uboxes, U-pack, ABF, and most especially, PODS (which incidentally has the worst customer service in history as well as prices 2-3x higher than Door to Door). Go with door to door, save your money, enjoy their customer service and actually getting a real person on the line, and write them a great review when you realize you made an excellent choice. read more

Door to Door has provided the absolute best customer service, pricing, and moving/storage solutions. They delivered our pods today (after bearing with several of my last minute decisions) and it is exactly what we wanted. They even managed to fit them through a very narrow driveway and turn them horizontal as to allow maximum room for loading them. I can't say enough about their service! I talked to many of their competitors in this process, but I knew the second I got on the phone with them that this was the best option for our needs. While other companies greeted us with uncertainty and extraneous fees, Door to Door reassured us at every step of the way and delivered on their promises. Moving is hard enough without any extra headaches. It should be noted we plan to store our belongings for two months as we have a gap in between houses. Thanks again! Door to Door prorates the price for your home goods coming in to their storage facilities but they don't prorate going out. From example....I tried to have my containers delivered before the end of the month funny thing was... they were booked... so the billing cycle went into the next month. Pure scam. PLEASE AVOID. I have never seen such dishonest pricing schemes. Disclaimer: I am not a "troll" Yelper. I don't write 1,000-word reviews of burritos or businesses I imagined to have mistreated me in some way, however the level of dishonesty this entire company (not just the Austin branch) is openly practicing is truly outrageous. Another review called DOOR-TO-DOOR the "worst possible solution to store your personal items," and yup! That's the gist of it. Like all their clients, I was primarily attracted by their cheap pick-up prices and offer to match local competitors. And yes, the pickup was cheap. The service itself is also fine: they drop the box, you fill it, they pick it up... Where you'll suffer is in the subsequent monthly payments for storage. This, I cannot stretch enough. COMPLETELY dishonest pricing. I've been forcefully with them since July and have experienced random price spikes throughout. My bill started at $60ish dollars a month. It is now in the $84 range month after month. I even had to call them three times to lower it back to this amount when they "automatically" spike it up to $95 range. That payment was lost money. No credit for the following month or anything. You can literally hear the phone attendants shrug on the other line. Apparently they had sent me an email (that looks and is filtered as spam by gmail) that announced this pay hike, weeks earlier. No option, other than a notice that your bill would be going up by 25% the following cycle unless you called and picked one of their other plans for minimal savings. These plans, you ask? Glad to share! They LOCK you into 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month plans for minimal rebates... $5-7 difference between them each month. (But once your bill hits $80, you start to find that appealing.) If you do break such a lengthy guarantee--you're forced to pay all remaining months at that price. Yup! If you want your stuff back after 3 months, you're forced to pay the entire 12-month difference if that was what you opted for... Why? Because they say so. Oh, yes: they also "Strongly encourage" you to pay MONTHLY for insuring your box, which is the entire point of using this service in the first place... but nope, an extra $12 every month. (That's like paying a "drying" fee for not getting your clothes back wet from the cleaners.) Avoid at all cost for storage. They might be worth if as one-time moving company, that's really up to you, but PLEASE stay away if you intend to store for more than 2-3 months. I used them to move from San Francisco to Boston, with 1-2 months of extra storage in Boston before I actually moved in. The people in SF were friendly, helpful and got me moving permits from the city -- all in a very tight time span. I would highly recommend them for their courteous, convenient service. But in Boston... what a different story. The guy at the depot here was really unpleasant, unhelpful, uncommunicative and condescending. All his communications to me had a mildly threatening tone. Even though I gave them 3 weeks notice of drop-off (they only required 2) he "warned" me that they might not be able to do it because of Labor Day weekend. He was completely hands-off in regards to arranging a parking permit. In the end, things worked out though not on my schedule. I would never use them in Boston again. read more

Sometimes it 's hard to appreciate how good a service is, when they make everything so easy. It was our experience with Door to door. A little background: had to move over the Holidays across the country for a new job. Everything had to leave California before Christmas and had to be delivered right just after New Year in Massachusetts...while we were spending the Holidays abroad. Quite a nightmare to organize, right? So I did my homework, called around the different moving + storage services. Actually I first called Door to door, and Marsha (who became my point of contact for the whole process) took a great deal of time to understand my needs and explain the whole process. We spent almost an hour on the phone, and she made everything really clear. I still can't believe how cold, almost rude, were the competitors in comparison. So, Door to Door was an easy choice. They delivered on all their promises, and were very accommodating for delivery and pick-up times. All in all, what I thought would be a nightmare to organize, they made it feel really simple. I can definitely recommend them, and will use them again if I need to. A few tips: We had a large 1 BR apartment. Our 2 containers were fully packed. They also sell moving furniture (boxes, tape, blankets,etc.): quite useful, definitely get the blankets, plenty of them. Get their locks (to lock the containers, key or code), it will save you a trip to the hardware store, and they're very sturdy. Their tape is rather on the thin side, you might want to get something stronger. Boxes are fine, and plenty enough in the 1BR kit. Make sure you wrap everything (buy more bubble wrap), and that everything fits snuggly in the containers. Things tend to shift and grind during transport (not much you or they can do about it). read more

I used Door to Door to move my belongings from Los Angeles to Boston. From getting the online quote to setting up pick-up and drop-off times for the pod, customer service was awesome and everyone I interacted with was very professional and friendly. I ordered two pods just in case everything didn't fit in one pod, and got reimbursed 100% right away for the second pod that I did not use. I was extremely impressed that, upon arrival to Boston, none of my belongings were damaged or broken during the moving process. Even all my wine glasses made it without a single crack! Not only was Door to Door reliable but they also had the best prices compared to other moving options. I highly recommend this company. read more

Looks like I forgot to update this review. Here's a follow up email I wrote about a year after I got my stuff back from Door to Door: To my recollection, the redelivery went pretty smoothly. It was about a year ago... I would definitley use the service again. My stuff came out of storage in good shape and Door to Door is affordable. It was a lot easier than a moving van and do it yourself storage. I think the most irksome part of using Door to Door is having to get permits from the town to park them in front of your house. Somerville makes you pay for the whole week ($50?) and Cambridge charges by the day (possibly $25). read more

I have moved around a bunch of times in the last few years and I have had such a good experience with these guys...they are so accommodating! Update: I have now dealt with Door to Door in two other locations and the experience was equally as good. I have recommended it to my friends and their experience has also been good. I wouldn't move valuable furniture in these containers as they are not fully airtight (one of mine also split up the side). As I don't own any valuable furniture, this is not an issue for me so I will continue to use them for all of my major moving needs. read more

Door to Door was fantastic for our Boston to SF move. Door to Door's quote was about half the price of its competitors (I checked with PODS and UBoxes). I was worried that the quality of service would suffer at the lower price, but from my first phone call with their sales rep, I need not have worried. They delivered everything on time, they communicated effectively, and were willing to be accommodating. The one slight annoyance was that you don't know your delivery time window until a few days before, but they're totally upfront about what their procedures are, and when I requested specific time slots I got them. I was moving away from Boston in June 2010 without knowing where I might end up or when I might finally get settled. I shopped around, and the pricing seemed reasonable, and after running the calculations, determined it was definitely cheaper and less hassle than moving it myself with a U-Haul. Door to Door will quote you a single price for the total service: Drop off of the empty unit (a wooden crate, 7' tall, 5' wide, 8' long; more than one if needed), pick up full unit, and transport. No hidden fees, no surprises. Quotes can change according to gas prices, but they tell you up front what the window is for honoring the quote. Storage is on a separate price schedule; there are discounts for 3 and 6 month contracts. My unit ended up in storage for about 15 months as I conducted a prolonged job search and tried to figure out where life would take me. I ended up calling Door to Door regularly, usually to pay my bill, but also to renew my storage contract, or often to discuss quotes to places I might move. The customer service was excellent each and every time. I found every staff member to be extraordinarily helpful, courteous, and knowledgeable. At one point, I needed access to my unit, and again, the assistance was impeccable and my needs totally covered. FYI: Transport and scheduling the drop-off can take a number of days, so plan accordingly. Upon delivery (in Washington DC area), I found my unit exactly as I'd left it; no major shifting had occurred, nothing broken. After 15 months, there was no mold, mildew, or weird smells, and very little dust-- less than it would have accumulated had I stored it in a basement. Overall, I was extremely pleased with my experience with Door to Door, and would recommend them without hesitation. read more

We used Door to Door to move from Chicago to central Mass, and it was super easy and the cheapest method to boot. It seemed like the sort of thing that would go wrong at some point, but it never did. They have great customer service --they either picked up when I called, or RETURNED MY CALLS (!) when I left a message. They dropped off and picked up the unit when they said they would, and we didn't even have to be at home when they dropped it off at our new place (we used the "No One Home" authorization"). Nothing was damaged during the move. We will definitely use Door to Door next time we have to move long distance. Tip: Try to schedule the drop off at your new place ahead of time. If you wait until it arrives at the storage location near your new home, you may have to wait some time before they can actually drop it off at your new home. read more

We've had a couple of minor problems in the past with Door-To-Door: a broken lock (nothing was missing), being over-charged (not the fault of the local owner/manager) and both were addressed and fixed promptly. This time, however, when they delivered my 2 containers to my home, it was clear something was not right. The driver had to use 3 tools to straighten the smashed staples (the part your lock goes through) to get the doors open. The driver warned me to be very careful opening that door. Right. That container had been opened and had a different lock (more expensive than mine) and was stamped "opened" in red. the contents looked as though the container had rolled over completely, there were rodent droppings (could be chipmunk) in two pet carriers, some boxes appeared to have been wet and then dried, game parts and an EMPTY file box rolled out onto the ground when we opened the door. The second container had not been opened and all the contents were intact but there is a layer of greasy black gunk (like you see after a fire) over everything and some of the boxes were exposed to moisture. this container had been given some rough treatment (splintered wood, spaces between the support strapping and the floor) and it appeared the floor would fall out before the driver set it down. I am not happy. Door-to-Door only has one phone number and that lives somewhere on the West coast. They don't respond to emails and sometimes the phone just rings. and rings. and rings.... read more

In Cambridge, I just watched a door to door employee enter and backup a forklift all the way down a one way street, at full speed. This forced a car driving, legally, to back up illegally onto a major road way. The employee could not have seen the car and risk another life in that way. I was not the other driver nor the owner of the contents in the full unit at risk on the front of the forklift. read more

Beware!!! This company provides a "non negotiable contract" and then violates their own terms. They have numerous hidden costs and keep your property as hostage until you pay them. They state in their contract "2 hours" notice for picking up the contents of the pod on site and that they are open every day but Sunday. The policy is now 24 hours notice and that they are closed on Wednesday. This is not revealed until you call to set up a time to retrieve the contents of the pod. It took numerous phone calls and hours of time to unsuccessfully resolve another unstated policy of confiscating your pod contents (so they can double charge you) if you can't get the contents out in a half an hour. When I notified them that we would pick up our own contents (and gave them the date) they didn't tell us of their new "we are closed on Wednesday " policy. This was our moving day and now we have to absorb a second cost of having our movers go to their facility on a different day other than of our move. When I tried to get a rebate for this undisclosed new policy I was told "We are closed .No refunds". I made the mistake of not checking out this company and I hope that I am saving others from hundreds of dollars in extra undisclosed charges. Their voice message when you call ironically warns against dishonest storage facilities. This is actually a disclaimer about their company. read more

Choosing a company to move my furniture was the most stressful part of relocating across the country! With Door to Door my move was made so much easier from beginning to end. From the quote to booking, and getting all the information I needed was a breeze! The customer service at the Boston, Massachusetts end and the San Diego, California end was absolutely amazing. I was even able to change my move date last minute and they were able to drop off the containers a lot sooner than I had planned. I also only filled one container, and they refunded my money for the second container right away. My biggest fear was to have a nightmare moving experience that I have heard from family and friends. This move with Door to Door was the exact opposite and I would most definitely recommend! I'm giving them 1 star because they only did one thing right. My boyfriend and I were moving across the country due to job relocation. They at least dropped off the unit to his old apartment for us to fill. Unfortunately they said they would drop it off from 2-5pm and of course they came after 5pm. When we left the next day to drive across the country to our new apartment they called and said they picked up the unit. Well, we have been in our new apartment for a week with none of our belongings. When we called they said it was still in storage at our home state and would arrive either 3 days before or after the arrival date. Arrival date actually means to their storage facility. Which means we have to call them to schedule a time for them to drop it off. I have to go back to our home state and finish work there. So unfortunately if this unit ever arrives, my boyfriend will be on his own unpacking it, since we have no friends here or anyone else to help us. The woman who I spoke with was not only rude, but completely unsympathetic to our situation. I hate Door to Door and will never use them again and encourage anyone else to never use them! We used PODS once, it was a bit more pricey, but much more worth it. Don't take the cheap route and deal with Door to Door's pathetic, disappointing customer service. read more

I've used ABF in the past, and now having used both door to door and ABF- go with ABF. The door to door pod arrived and I am sincerely worried to leave my stuff in it overnight and won't be packing it until the moment it gets picked up. As we watched, the delivery man used a screw driver to take off all the locks and readjust them so that they lined up (although they still barely line up correctly). The hinges are missing half the screws, and the half that are there aren't screwed in completely. These containers are so rickety and all it would take is one screwdriver to pop all these locks out of the shredded old wood. Only use this company if you do not care about your stuff being secure. read more

Door to Door did a perfect job on my move! I moved from San Francisco to Boston and the people on both coasts were fantastic. For starters, my sales guy Steve in Oregon was awesome. He gave me a competitive rate with PODS and UBF, and superior customer service in the entire process from beginning to end. In San Francisco, the drivers came right on time and the local office communicated all along the way. When it turns out I needed 2 more storage containers because I had guessed incorrectly, they didn't crucify me on the price for the additional two, even though I had gotten a great deal on the first 3, and they brought them first thing the next day. In Boston, my contact people were just as nice, friendly and responsive as the San Francisco folks, and the driver worked with me to find the perfect time for delivery. I couldn't be happier. In addition, everything arrived intact and not one single thing was broken! This is saying a lot for a transcontinental move. They also helped me get parking permits for both cities, which is a big help. Door to Door was awesome and I recommend them to everyone, and I'll use them again the next time I need moving or storage. read more

Door-to-Door is fabulous! I cannot say enough nice things about the moving process and the people associated with Door-to-Door. The move of my belongings from Cambridge to San Diego had to occur on a very tight timeline. Door-to-Door was completely honest with me re: the possibilities for meeting my timeline and then did everything humanly possible to make my timeline. My belongings arrived in perfect condition. Although I am a very careful packer, the great condition of my belongings also speaks to the great care Door-to-Door took with my containers (I used two) - during delivery, pick-up, and the trip across the country. I investigated other container movers and full-service movers before choosing Door-to-Door. Without question, Door-to-Door was the most customer focused, most customer-friendly, and most honest about what was possible and what was not. Many people stopped to ask me about Door-to-Door as I was loading and then unloading the containers. I told each the same thing - although this was the first time I used Door-to-Door, it most certainly will not be the last. On all future moves, I will again use Door-to-Door and encourage everyone else to also use Door-to-Door. They are truly in a class by themselves. There is no reasonable competition to Door-to-Door. If you value both your sanity and your belongings during the always stressful moving process, choose Door-to-Door. read more
