We had such high expectations because last year we had a very intimate, yet pleasant experience. This year was wonderful until the end of the night. We spent over $500 PER COUPLE to enjoy a New Years night. Rudy, the "hotel manager" was so completely and unnecessarily rude at the end of the night. He barged in to the balcony patio yelling "You guys gotta leave NOW....we need to clean up." Mind you, Dorrego's is not a dive bar to be yelling at patrons to "leave now." We went and brought two other people to enjoy the new year's Eve dinner and celebration. We will not be returning for dinner OR new year's from this point forward. read more

Just all around horrible. Service: horrible, horrible, horrible. I had to get up and look for my server at one point. My husband ordered a blood Mary (that he said was one of the worst drinks he's ever had in his life, like that they actually made it wrong because there's no way it's supposed to taste like that) and it took him over 20 minutes to get it. Asked the server if the drink was coming and she said oh! I forgot to put that in. and really it was us two and another table with 2 ladies. That was it. Not even almost busy. Food: we ordered the empanadas and the stew for starters. Nothing remarkable. Stew very blend, empanadas were ok. For main I ordered the Argentine shepherds pie and my husband ordered the NY strip steak. His steak was just colorless, don't even really know how to explain it. Very blend as well. For an Argentinian restaurant, that's just sinful. My pie was just ok. Not terrible but not something I'd care to eat again. Just over all, bad bad bad. For a restaurant in a 5 star hotel, I was expecting waaayyyy more. read more

Absolutely great food. Short menu which to me always indicates whatever I have will be good. I got the snapper (fish of the day) and it was outstanding. They also gave our whole table of four a complimentary glass of Malbec before we even saw the menu right when we sat down. Everything was good. Definitely would go back here again. read more

Reservations are must every where you go in SA no matter how empty a restaurant appears. That being said Dorrego's was excellent across the board, from atmosphere, to staff, to the food. My husband and I split the massive 16oz ribeye, that was seasoned and cooked to a perfect medium rare. The accompanying sauces were delicious, you could make each bite taste a little different than the last. My boys got the tenderloin and the fish of the day. Both dishes were so good, they completely cleaned their plates. We had originally wanted the paella but it is only offered Monday through Friday. The food was ok. The 16oz ribeye was most certainly not 16oz. The service was really the problem. We ordered empanadas which were forgotten. She was extremely busy and the whole restaurant was understaffed, so we were sympathetic to her situation. Not only was she very busy, but also very informal and unprofessional for that setting. We ordered a glass of wine and were served a bottle that the server broke the cork off when opening, so we did not have the chance to say that we didn't order it. The empanadas were served with dinner and truly a disappointment. The salad, chimichurri, and the wine were excellent. The complimentary glass of wine while we waited was a nice gesture, but not worth it. A promising spot that left us very disappointed. There are other excellent choices nearby. read more

We were very disappointed with the service and the offerings for such an expensive place for breakfast. We were hoping for some Argentinian dishes for breakfast but the menu was all American. Not even a specialty coffee on the menu. There were only 3 tables that needed to be waited on. We had to ask both servers for coffee. The first server took our order but didn't remove our menus so the second server thought he needed to take our order. My husband ordered the create your own omelet and sourdough toast. It did not have any cheese that he asked for and he never received the bread. Nobody checked to see if everything was okay. Had to have the toast removed from the bill. Had to flag down a server for more coffee. They offered cholula or Tabasco. He requested cholula and the server came back w what looked like jarred salsa. I ordered the lox bagel. I thought it was weird that they put a massive block of cream cheese on one slice of the bagel topped with the lox. Not the chive cream cheese that is stated on the menu. I had to deconstruct it to put some of the cream cheese on the other slice of bagel. Maybe their dinner is better, but based on the disappointing service and food, we wouldn't recommend it. read more

Came here with a group of six. So at the end it auto added the tip, which was lucky for our server. Worst service I've had in a while. We sat there for pretty long stretches being ignored. Watched her hover around and hit other tables and walk by us for half an hour seemingly deliberately not looking in our direction. It wasn't that busy. We'd see her checking in on the other couple tables she had. Rarely looked at us for the first hour. The food was really hit or miss. Proveletta was great. Stew was great. Empanadas pretty good. Half the table was served drinks that no human could swallow. Had to send them back and we're not really the sort of people to send things back. Waitress said the bartender was new and training. That's fine but a little qc please. Steaks were dry and over. Potatoes were all cold and under. "Twice cooked" sweet potatoes were raw and crunchy. Bad experience overall for sure. Maybe two stars for food but one star service for sure. I'm usually a good tipper. I don't require good service just not horrible service. Never again. We waited to be seated and then had to ask if there was a server to attend to us after nearly 10 minutes. The manager was generous and offered to comp our dessert. The appetizers were the highlight of the meal. The lamb meatballs were well-spiced and succulent. The beet salad was fine. Water glasses remained empty until we could find the server for a refill. Mains: half chicken was serviceable, except the only plate provided to eat from was bread-sized. The server forgot the other meal. When the churrasco finally arrived it was under cooked and the yuca hard and dry. The manager again immediately took it back to the kitchen and the steak came out only slightly more cooked. Side: Brussels sprouts with chorizo. It was ok. The sprouts were hard. The waiter cleared plates from the table while we were still eating. Dessert: the bread pudding was definitely hot. And dry. And tough to cut through with the spoon. The meal was an utter disappointment. The second star is only because the manager listened to our concerns and removed the two mains from the bill. read more

We had a reservation here for Christmas night as we were staying at a nearby hotel in downtown San Antonio. We ordered wine and wanted a wine from Argentina since the food was Argentinian. Our server Bret knew their wines very well and recommended an excellent one. He also was very knowledgeable of the menu and made nice recommendations that were good. Food was excellent. We had the empanadas and flamed cheese for appetizers and the paella and steak for entrees. Everything was very nice and well seasoned. read more

First, the starter mussels come topped with grease-drenched French fries. I said 'okay' and ordered the cheapest thing on menu ($24 lasagna), since the caliber of food tells me at best it's no better than their $70 "Argentinian-inspired" steak. Second, staff should be working at Mickey D's since they have no concept that customers might need utensils. Third, ~ 30 minutes after we ordered, the waiter comes back and states they ran out of food for 2 of the 3 entrees for our party. On top of that, the second round of drinks never came out. I really enjoyed the ambiance of this restaurant. From we entered the customer service was amazing starting with the complimentary wine. The empanadas were the best I've ever eaten and so fresh, I was truly sad when they only gave me two. The bread was the best, so buttery and yummy. I had high hopes for the dinner since everything leading up was so delicious . However, the dinner was simply okay. We waited 1.5 hours to eat only to be served something that could've been cooked in 10 mins. Not to mention the potato's were burnt. I'm not sure how the restaurant dropped the ball on that one, but we were told they were short staffed. I really wanted to love this place so badly. read more

The service at this restaurant is second to none. The staff was so accommodating and eager to please. Our waiter was AWESOME!! I regret that I can't remember his name because he certainly deserves a "shout out." The food was great. My compliments to the chef, for sure. The atmosphere makes it that much more enjoyable. Complimentry valet! We went before a show. This is Acenar's quieter relative, on the second floor. Booths, tables half booths and tabels. It is clean, and the bar menu is generous and reasonably priced. Pro:The food was hot, prompt and interesting selection for a bar menu. CON: the waitor said they had been serving my dish all along without the bacon and scallions on the menu...as if,"why are you the only one to not go along with it ". One star for it's location a few steps from the Majestic. This place has the potential to be a nice place to get an appetizer and drink or meal before a show. Instead the food is barely edible; your choices are restricted (not posted on the website) to a before the show menu, even though we had one hour and 15 minutes to curtain; the waiter brings you the wrong order and says " I got you this instead". What a shame, this place should be full every night with the Majestic traffic! So unless significant changes are made I would stay away from here. read more

Nice touch of Argentina in San Antonio with a lively and expert bar. Amongst all the chain and tourist oriented restaurants on the river walk (not a bad thing) this is a nice alternative. They have a nice selection of appetizers, salads and proteins for almost anyone. I had grilled beef ("Asado") but, the highlight was the Chimichurri Sauce that was just as I had it in Buenos Aires. We also had chicken empanadas and the the Bronzino which was grilled whole. Delicious! Very nice selection of wines by the glass. We really enjoyed it. read more

Had birthday dinner last night with some dear friends before heading over to the Aztec for the Bon Jovi and Van Halen tribute band show (which rocked!). Wonderful place to eat and wish it wasn't as hot so we could have enjoyed the patio seating, though our bench was soft and comfortable by the window. Atmosphere - There is a long bar as you walk in with a separate room for larger parties by the patio. The set up was perfect with a mixture of dishes, plates and unique water glasses. Service - Spot on service from the time you walk in up until you walk out. They wished the birthday boy a happy birthday and was attentive to the table. Manager stopped by and made sure everyone was satisfied. Food - What could top the service and atmosphere??? The FOOD. We were a little bummed that the octopus was not on the menu at the time, so we got a bunch of other things to share with the table with one sea- etarian and one picky eater. We got the lobster balls that came with chunks of lobster topped with greens, radish and balsamic sauce. Impressive job kitchen for the balls and the Grilled Whole Branzino which is enough to munch on with 3 people, even though there was some fighting over the head and tail. The Branzinon came with another salad on the side, but we also got the Caesar Salad and Lamb Meatballs that were a little dry. Cannot complain because they brought an extra order for waiting, which we didn't think was waiting with the other items on the table. The last item was getting a chicken and meat empanada. This was the picky eaters favorite dish picking the meat with apricot and egg. It was good. Drinks - The girls got the Neroli that was perfectly made with the right amount of aperol, blood orange liqueur, fresh squeezed orange juice, topped with prosecco. We got the simple Stoli twist, but girls got gin and tonic that were strong. Overall - This might be our new favorite restaurant that we are able to hear one another with excellent food and service within walking distance from the Aztec. read more

Stopped in to get away from an event in the area. I was on a search for a Bloody Mary worth paying for. I got there right after brunch so it was really dead. Sat at the bar area and ordered my drink the bartender Richard was super helpful and friendly. So was the other staff. I ordered my Bloody Mary of course which seem to be made fresh in house because of all the lovely spices blended in. No pre mix here. Great balance and flavor. I looked over the menu which Is created by executive Chef Anthony Mesa. I really liked the options I had to choose from which were hearty and decent amount of options. Since it was lunch and I was looking for something quick to eat I went with the Burgerpan which consists of 1/2 pound brisket burger, brioche bun, TX white cheddar, candied bacon, arugula, pickled red onion, tomato and chimi aioli. Phenomenal I have to say, one of the juiciest burgers I ever had the pleasure to sink my teeth into. I ordered fries to go along with it but it gave it no justice or comparison to this burger. I suggest to order the house chips which the chimichuri ketchup instead. I will be back for dinner soon. Can't wait to see what else chef has up his sleeve. I'm reading the reviews, and there must be a completely different lunch menu and team from dinner, and I've tried it TWICE to be fair. The first time I went to Dorrego's, it was a Tuesday, and the lunch-special was a "pastrami dip"and I was saddened to receive a dish that barely resembled pastrami. The meat looked and tasted more beef jerky. I told the server about it, and she explained "that's why the kitchen serves it with jus". In that case, TO THE KITCHEN: Instead of asking your customer to dunk their dry meat in jus, perhaps you should consider making the meat a little juicer...wouldn't that make a little more sense? Anyway, I ate two bites of the meal, and I left it alone. It was inedible. My second visit wasn't much better. I went for the carnitas grilled cheese lunch special. It's South Texas, how can you get carnitas and a grilled cheese wrong? Well, I've got the answer for you: a dry hoagie, dry carnitas and ONE slice of cheese. They put avocado on there, which I assume is supposed to add some texture, but it only muted the already bland flavors for the dry bread and meat. The menu says it's a "grilled" cheese, and the dang sandwich looked like something not even Subway would stand behind. I think management should consider renaming the restaurant "Dry-eggo's" because that's what you are going to get at lunch. read more

Delicious dinner before Majestic on 6-7-19. We had To DIE for Pear Salad. Light with a mixture of textures and tastes without being too sweet. Located inside of the Valencia, Dorregos advertises 'Argentinian' style eats along with craft cocktails. Lunch here offers a severely limited menu with high priced sandwiches and salads. While solid, none of the choices really stood out or offered what I had expected in terms of Argentinian food. The server was not well versed in the menu and struggled to get orders out in a timely manner so they may still be working out opening kinks. The drinks were well done, but again at least 20 minutes until arrival. Maybe dinner is a different beast, but don't expect a culinary adventure at lunch. read more

Overall, not impressed. Tried almost everything in the menu. The duck empanadas, although not real Argentinean, were deep fried and delicious. The Provoleta needs more spices. The "steak" was blah. The prawns were excessively fishy. The chocolate lava cake was actually delicious, although we waited more than 30 minutes. If we could just get the waiter to refill waters that would be fantastic, and the door to close as the people smoking right by the door didn't care the smoke was going all in. The manager made up for the wait by offering more wine. That was nice. Second try update: Brussel sprouts are delicious. Cesar salad comes with real anchovies (the way it should). I added chicken and it was a cold, dry chicken. The wine by the glass goes all the way to $40. I think Argentinean wines are REALLY good but not necessarily expensive. No reason to charge $40/glass. Disappointed they don't have the empanadas anymore for dinner. Service was 100 times better. Glad to see that. read more

I've been very much looking forward to this place for some time, and it did not disappoint. It was recommended to me by my boss, and he's never steered me wrong. We were greeted by a smiling host(ess) and met some friends at the bar. I was dining at a nice restaurant with my daughters aged 4 and 6 so I was a bit nervous but we were treated like guests of honor. We ordered just about everything on the menu save for the Caesar salad and a ribeye dish. Every single thing was spot on. Even the blood sausage got thumbs up from the English gentleman of the group. My favorite, believe it or not, was the veggie pasta. A tagliatelle noodle in a spiced white sauce with eggplant, peppers and onions. I expect the meats and seafood to be on point at a restaurant of this caliber, but the veggie food, especially in Texas, can be an afterthought. Tasting this plate reinforced how well thought out this menu really is. Service was attentive without being overbearing. Chris made suggestions and kept our glasses full. The food was brought to our table by the chef! More than once in a busy restaurant on a Friday night. You just know how much this hotel and restaurant value the guest experience. Do not skip dessert. The dulce du leche lava cake and the apple pie flavored empanadas were amazing. We will be back. read more

Lovely laid-back locale in the Hotel Valencia with well crafted and flavorful food We ate both breakfast and supper. The enjoyable Spanish Benedict and Eggs Diablo demonstrated the chef's facility with Spanish/Argentine seasoning- great! At supper, the Medallions were perfect; a few hiccups with some of the other items but management made them right (and in all fairness it was Super Bowl Sunday night) And they surprised us with a wonderful mocha chocolate cake for our anniversary ! read more

An innovative fusion of Italian and Argentinian culture, Dorrego's is at this point our favorite restaurant in San Antonio. The experience begins with a little known perk, but valet parking for those eating at the establishment is free. The valet staff are incredibly friendly and professional, and set the persistent tone of professionalism that we saw through the rest of our time on site. I've not stayed in Hotel Valencia yet, but it's now on the list of things to do. It's a super cool establishment with old Spanish architecture. Small touches like the flavored water or juice set just as you enter the door let you know the staff is constantly thinking about how to enhance your experience. The flowing marble staircase taking you to the second floor is beautiful and makes it worth skipping the elevator. The second floor is also an amazingly interesting architectural space as there are several areas tucked out of the way and perfect for quiet conversations or just watching traffic through huge windows looking out on the riverwalk. The entire space puts you into a whimsical frame of mind and you almost expect Don Diego de la Vega to step out and engage you in conversation at any moment. This is even further enhanced in the evenings as a live guitarist fills the place with strummed Spanish guitar. During our last visit, my wife and I had a chance to wait at the bar for a short while and were impressed with the efficiency of our bartender, Jenny. The place went from dead to constant stream of people, and this attractive young lady switched from customer to customer efficiently and professionally. My wife and I both remarked to each other at how she was giving each customer the impression of being her sole focus, despite the fact that the young lady was preparing drinks for multiple other tables and customers at the same time. It was a display of professional skill and experience that we both enjoyed being witness to. Then came the food, a masterfully executed play on the palate featuring the gambit of flavor and texture. My wife ordered the paella and I had the Chicken and Argentinian Risotto. Made to order, I was very impressed with the paella once my wife allowed me to try some. The thing I noticed immediately was that the rice was slightly drier than other paella I've had before, but it was obvious once I tasted it. The rice in this dish is toasted first that exchanges the more typical moisture content for a nuttiness instead. That flavor is taken to a whole new level as bits of rice are seared to the cast iron preparation and serving vessel. The Maillard reaction creates these crunchy bits of intense umami through the whole dish that shines the limelight of deliciousness on other flavors like saffron and the sofrito. I won't even go into the quality of the seafood that made up the dish because my hands would cramp with describing how delicious it was. My risotto was a thing of wonder, though. Fusing Italian and Argentinian culinary culture into an absolute work of art. The risotto was perfectly prepared with just the perfect snap in texture. The perfectly diced and integrated sofrito tells me of an incredibly well-run kitchen that executes even small things with professional precision. Each element was cooked to the perfect time to produce cohesive flavor, and more telling was the cohesive texture. The creaminess of the risotto combined with the very mild Argentinian chorizo wonderfully, and both seemed to spotlight the deliciously prepared roasted chicken, rather than hiding it. This simple dish was executed with such precision and skill, and the concept was so innovative that it might be my new favorite dish. If the gods have comfort food, this is it. There's even more I love about this place, from the deserts to the beautiful balconies that I plan to spend many cool mornings taking my coffee on. This post is already overlong, however. Just know that this establishment is very worth the effort of going downtown. If you're staying on the riverwalk, this is a must for your trip. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner, you will not leave disappointed. read more
