Let's talk about the positives...the ambiance and space is beautiful. That's about it. Initially to be seated, I waiting quite a bit. Enough to look over the menu 3x and it was NOT busy. Maybe 2 single tables, one full table outside, and 2 full tables inside kinda busy. I wasn't super hungry so I just ordered an entree, the seafood paella thinking it would be a specialty. All the protein was dry except the shrimp. I couldn't even get the mussels and most of the clams out because it was so over cooked. Flavor was ok. And got 1 refill of my small glass of water. This restaurant is inside Hotel Valencia. We always enjoy a few drinks and lite snacks at the bar. Brittany and McKenzie work very well behind the bar together and can make a very good spicy vodka (jalapeños muddled with Tito's and club soda). We visited the bar a few times during our stay and they always took great care of us. read more

Delicious empanadas (cheese, meat and chicken)! We tried all three types of empanadas they offer and none of them disappointed. I recommend you go fried over baked though. The chimichurri sauce really enhanced the empanadas too. My grandmother who hardly eats nearly finished the pasta dish which was also fabulous. My husband and I celebrated Valentine Day early-on Friday. We had the "Valentine's Menu" consisting of five courses. The entire experience at Dorrego's was superb. It was a very relaxing ambiance. We were greeted at the table with a complimentary glass of Malbec. We were grateful to have had Ester as our server. She attended to our every need without hovering. She answered all of my questions in detail regarding the food. Each course was delicious and we couldn't wait for the next one. The creamy mushroom bisque is now my favorite. The filet mignon was perfectly seasoned and cooked; and, it was very tender and flavorful. We will definitely be returning. We had a less than satisfactory experience this evening. First, we waited for quite a long time at the hostess stand to be seated, despite numerous seemingly capable employees who were walking about. This was with a reservation. The lack of attention at the front was a preview of what we experienced at the table...a less than attentive server who seemed truly bothered by each request for a refilled beverage or questions about dessert. The large, hardcover menus were left in a stack on our table throughout the meal. Our food was fine, but nothing extraordinary or up to the quality we expected for the price. We hoped for a special night out before a show at a nearby theater, but we're underwhelmed from start to finish, sadly. We won't return here. read more

As a huge fan of empanadas and food from Argentina in general, Dorregos is a nice new addition to the culinary scene of San Antonio. We first started off with the duck confit empanadas which were excellent! We had a nice refreshing cocktail called the "Dandy". My true favorite was dessert though! We got some smoked apple empanadas in a caramel glaze with a lump of ice cream! It was phenomenal! The service was on point and the chef personally cane out to explain each dish from beginning to end. Dorregos is truly a place that takes pride in what it serves to its customers. If it continues to perform and excel the way it did, the future will be very bright for this restaurant and Hotel Valencia where it is located. Dorrego's rates only 3 stars-we looked at their online menu and saw their lunch menu which they do not do any more. They changed this early this month but haven't updated their website, -1 star, my wife ordered beef empanadas and changed it to chicken before our waitress walked away and got corn empanadas instead, -1 star. The website lists empanadas at 3 dollars each and now you get 2 for 7 dollars. The empanadas we got were very good. If you change your menu, change the one online at the same time please. read more

terrible service and mediocre food. I'm not used to being treated like a bother at a restaurant, especially when I order a $120 bottle of champagne. the older Mexican waitress basically acted like she hated us the whole time we were there. i had to ask another waiter to finally open our champagne, and he let us know it was a total hassle & that we weren't letting it chill long enough (had been at our table for almost half an hour). the tomahawk came out well done rather than medium as ordered - kinda hard to send back. my wife liked her paella but hated the experience as well. there was a gentleman named John who was very friendly and seemed to be compensating for the rest of the unfriendly staff. don't bother coming here, go to Biga's around the block. way better food and they treated us like actual people rather than an inconvenience. I turn 40 next week so I guess it was refreshing to be treated like an idiot teenager? Nah. This place sucks. read more

We decided to try this place for Mother's Day brunch, and we were not disappointed! Located in the Hotel Valencia, as you drive up, you can valet your car or park it yourself. The valets will welcome you in and open the doors to the hotel for you. We walked up the stairs to the restaurant through the beautiful hotel. We were greeted by the host and shown to our table immediately. Our table had a perfect view of the riverwalk. We ordered mimosas and started in on the buffet. All of the food was wonderful. They had an omelette station, a waffle station, along with assorted meats, vegetables, and, of course, desserts. There weren't many other people there, so there were no lines for anything. The carving station had the BEST prime rib. Usually, I like my meat on the rarer side, and the meat looked a little well done. But it was actually sooooo tender and juicy! The service was amazing. We didn't even have to stand there to wait for our omelettes. We just went around to get the rest of our food, and the omelettes were brought to our table. Everyone was very accommodating and nice. Our waitress was outstanding! Always very attentive. We will definitely be going there again for Mother's Day next year! read more

The two stars are for the service. Fresh fish special highly recommended: the Mahi mahi was incredibly overcooked. The cilantro rice was UNDERcooked. Not even al dente. Quite the feat. The asparagus was delicious. Clearly the only edible thing. My companion enjoyed the fresh bread with tomato tapenade. The house made chorizo was in a casing and also dry. The most flavorful item. And disappointing. Ordered a bottle of wine for a special promotion price of $40. It was a half bottle but not explained or mentioned prior to opening. It was delicious and the highlight in spite of the size. The peeling sign should have been an indication. We went due to the reviews. DON'T. The restaurant below was crowded and diners appeared happy and full. The lovely waiter apologized and removed the dish from the bill, while stating this has happened a lot. read more

My one complain is when the server came out, she said 'I am not sure if they cooked your steak right or even gave me the right one, so ahead and cut into it so I can make sure.' So we visited Dorrego's twice. Once for drinks in the evening and then again for breakfast the following day. The bartender and drinks were very good and the prices were not bad at all. We enjoyed the atmosphere and the entire night. The next day, we had breakfast and it was horrible! The service was bad, the breakfast tacos had NO flavor, even with the salsa. The coffee was cold. Wine list and drinks were expansive although was not a fan of the appetizers. Labeled as a red chimmiuri sauce, the wings were simply average. Dorrego's, more than just a fancy restaurant, it was one of our best dining experiences ever! Every detail was impeccable and classy. I ordered a glass of Merlot to start off and hubby had a blackberry drink. Both complimented our meals. I decided to try out the Churrasco with fried yuca and my hubby had the rib eye with cheesy potatoes au gratine. Even though both came in a delicious presentation. Mine came out with an oddity in flavor in the steak...nonetheless I explained it to the manager and was gracious enough to exchange it for something else. After tasting my husband's rib eye, I exchanged it for that in stead. It was so exquisitely delicious and tender, the flavor was out of this world! I don't think I've ever had better steak in my LIFE! It was so juicy and flavorful that with every bite I just had to 'Ahhh', with a mouthful of flavor! Ohhhh Dorregos, where have you been ALL my life???? Lol. The potatoes au gratin were so delicately cheesy and delicious, my husband thought they were just STELLAR! He's never had anything like it, and I agree percent! The empanadas were so soft and fluffy and freshly made are were so delicious! My favorite ones were the cheese ones even though we didn't try the pinto empanadas. We'll have to try them next time... Now If I had to think how authentic it was to Argentinian cuisine...I think they tried hard to give it a vibe but it was only a great idea..The staff was incredible! It's a must to stay at their hotel too so you can indulge in other activities by the river walk...celebrities travel far and wide to stay at the Hotel Valencia! We went to Dorrego's to celebrate our 25th anniversary! Since we used to frequent a long-closed Argentinian restaurant in Miami when we first started dating, we thought that Argentinian food (specifically, a parillada) would be appropriate for this momentous occasion. Enter Dorrego's. Located in the beautiful Hotel Valencia on the Riverwalk, the restaurant has both indoor and outdoor seating. It was rather cool outside, so we opted for a table indoors. There wasn't anyone there when we arrived (right at 7 pm), but tables started trickling in right after. I had mentioned on our reservation that it was our anniversary and we were treated to complimentary glasses of champagne! That was an unexpected treat! I had already ordered a glass of (reasonably priced) red wine to eat with my meal, but the champagne made our meal that much more special. The hubs and I started with the Proveleta Flamado a la Mesa (Argentinian provolone cheese with chorizo, brought over to the table while flaming) with toasted bread. It was delicious and hit the spot! For our dinner, we ordered the Cowboy parillada for 2...a generous serving of grilled meats, including steak (cooked perfectly medium rare), Argentinian chorizo sausage, Morcilla (blood sausage, which we substituted for more chorizo), veggies and more provelata (melted provolone cheese) on top. We also ordered yuca fries to balance out the meat overload! They were huge pieces of yuca, fried crispy and served with chimichurri sauce. Everything was delicious, but there was so...much...food! That's a good thing, because we had our leftovers as our pre-Thankgiving day dinner tonight! Sadly, we didn't have dessert because we were stuffed, but we'll save room next time! The service was terrific, and the prices were more than reasonable for the area. We re so glad we chose Dorrego's to celebrate our big day, and will definitely be returning soon! read more

This review is for the bar seating and menu only (upstairs next to the dining room). I'm writing so others who want to enjoy the full menu al fresco are on notice. We sat in the bar because the dining room was full. There is an entire dining room that was not being used so I'm not sure what why seating was so limited other than perhaps a staffing shortage. This is a tough time for restaurants. There is outdoor seating... sort of. No table service. So to dine al fresco, you have to order off the bar menu, and carry your food outside yourself. The bar menu was limited and did not feature much of the Argentinian flavor dishes that I was excited about. The cocktail menu had some drinks that looked promising and we were excited to see the bartender using fresh ingredients for garnishes. But the Belgrano didn't work for me; the competing bitterness of the gin, quinine and mate tea was too much. Bottom line, make reservations well ahead of time, skip the bar, forget about sitting outside, and enjoy what I'm sure is an amazing culinary experience. read more

I had lunch here with a coworker the other day, and it was completely empty except for us. That said, the service was great. We got the empanadas appetizer and they were delicious, crispy and flavorful. It came with a great little fresh salad that was just perfect to split and cut through the rich empanada. My coworker got the shepherds pie, and said it was really bland. I got the grilled chicken sandwich, which was decent but not the best I've ever had. The fries were really thick and I don't know if they were under or over cooked but they were dry and a little bland as well. If I were staying at this hotel, it wouldn't be a bad spot to get a glass of wine - and I might still try their dinner menu because the prices were really reasonable and the service was good. read more

Worst place to eat. Flies and gnats at our table. Salad was wilted no taste. "Paella" rice had no taste, served with closed mussels (bad old mussels), and tasteless rice with hot dogs. "Paella" should have been called a mixed rice. Wine was good. Glass of whisky was good. $240 for four plus $30-$40 for the table servant that did very well from the start. Server took our numbers but did not call us. Not recommended. I will not recommend my military friends visiting to eat there. read more

I stayed at Hotel Valencia for 3 nights and have purchased the Bed & Breakfast package (which includes valet parking and breakfast up to, apparently $52 total). So as part of the Bed & Breakfast deal, I got to eat breakfast at Dorrego's for 3 mornings. Upon arrival (every morning actually), we had to wait a little for a host to take us to a seat. About 2 servers and a host except for Monday which was only 1 server and 1 host. This is absolutely okay as I saw they had a handful and the wait was not long at all. This restaurant is clean, nicely decorated to Argentina-luxury-style and still have originals floors (or so I think). Servers were all friendly, especially Aailyah. I didn't even have to ask for ketchup or anything and she always have recommendations. Saturday morning, Sunday morning and after dinner time, and Monday morning, they were always short-staff, especially that Monday when I was leaving San Antonio for Austin. Breakfast overall were good except for the last breakfast I had, which caused my to deal with the remaining of the week of food poison. - Spanish Benedict was good except one of the eggs was too cooked. Papas bravos (Spanish version of homestyle fries) are delicious! - Blueberry pancakes surprisingly cooked to perfection with the right amount of blueberries. I definitely recommend this. - French toast should be toasted a little longer because it was hard to cut but overall delicious. - Sausage links okay - a little salty but a lot better than your typical frozen iHop sausage links. - Eggs can be either over-cooked or cook right... depending on the chef of the day. - San Antonio migas good except found a hair on Sunday morning breakfast... - I had a bite out of the Spanish omelette and it was okay. Nothing special. - Caramel cappuccino bitter and stronger than caramel macchiato. I'm someone who loves dark roasted coffee and expresso by the way so their bitter tasted like burnt cappuccino. I prefer caramel latte if I was to dine in for breakfast here again. - Caramel cheesecake from dinner that was sent to the room was delicious but a tad pricey (about $14). I would pay it again to share with someone. Again, my last day (or morning) in San Antonio, I ate at Dorrego's one last time before driving to Austin for the remaining of my Texas trip. The last 3 days in Austin was miserable because I ate Spanish Benedict with croissant and suffered from food poison a few hours later till towards the end of the week. That's almost a whole week of my life! I question their sanitary in the kitchen since the second breakfast I had here. read more

We recently stayed at Hotel Valencia for a few days. We decided to visit the hotel restaurant, Dorrego's, which we rarely do. We are so happy we did! All of the food from the bread, appetizers, steaks, pasta and dessert were AMAZING! The restaurant required a reservation and we were quickly served by Shawn. Shawn was very helpful when deciding on drinks and food. He also did a few magic tricks for our daughters. Definitely the best food we ate while touring the Texas hill country. My husband and I had dinner there on 3/22/24. It was the furthest thing from Argentinean food. The steak was just a regular steak you could get anywhere. No BBQ, no milanesas, no Russian salad, no good variety of empanadas, not even flan with dulce de leche. I had the locro and it was more of a spicy Mexican soup than our traditional stew. Also had the crepes. They tasted old with bad dulce de leche topped with some banana topping which is not traditional. Waited for dessert forever. I say this to the owners.....,.DO YOuR RESEARCH, get an Argentine chef and staff and serve our proper food. If you don't know our culture, foods, and traditions then don't try to manipulate our recipes. It was quite disappointing and way too expensive for what we got. We had a fairly large family brunch gathering here, party of 15 for my sister's wedding. Most of the family was staying in the Hotel Valencia which is beautiful and historic so we chose to have our family gathering here. I very much enjoyed the empanadas and citrus salad I ordered. I had both the chicken and beef empanadas which were hot, piping and served with an excellent chimichurri sauce. The steaks were good, the accompanied potato wedges the looked really good but weren't very fresh. Overall, service was really good for large parties. They didn't mess up our orders, kept our glasses full and we saw a famous basketball player in the restaurant! read more

Located upstairs inside Hotel Valencia, Dorrego's serves up Latin and American cuisine in a traditionally Latin, romantic and refined space. We ate indoors because unfortunately the weather was not cooperating, but outdoors the patio looked inviting with pillows and cushioned seating. Inside, the fireplace was lit and dim light excentuated the southwest style arches. The tables are accented with blue patterned bread plates for a pop of color and leather placemats for a rustic and comfortable touch. I think this place is a great addition to the San Antonio restaurant list, as it's not cliche tex-mex, but offers entrees with a hispanic flair. The service was absolutely excellent- quick, pleasant, and on the ball. I loved the small private alcove with a table set for 8-10 people. Would be the perfect spot to have a birthday dinner! The food in one word? Hearty. The menu has everything from salads, to skirt steak, to gnocci, to salmon. I had the salmon with a sweet potato puree with maple glaze and carrots, and it tasted even better than it looked! A side of brussel sprouts and a roll of wheat bread made for the most delicious comfort food. Plenty to choose from on this menu. The prices were not as inflated as you might expect from a restaurant inside a hotel. Of course there's a captive audience whenever a restaurant is inside of a hotel, but 3 of us ate very well for under $100. It most certainly felt like a restaurant of its own without the slightest feeling of being within a hotel. If you're out and about on the San Antonio river walk, I'd recommend stopping here for dinner. read more

I frequent Hotel Valencia for business often but have been reluctant to eat at Dorrego's. No matter what time I'm here they are never busy. Same tonite but I thought I'd give it a try. On the menu, the shepherds states it's braised beef but seemed more like ground beef. Also says it's with green olives and carrots. I saw and tasted neither. The flavor was decent though lacking originality. I guess I expected more. On a side note, the lighting is too bright and wrong color even for a quasi sports bar. Service is great though. read more
