Perhaps It helps when you know your food preparer, and in this case I happen to know Matt, a classically CIA trained Chef. He and his excellent kitchen staff have elevated the expected fare, hamburgers, chicken fried steak to a level worth the 24.6 miles it takes to get there. You will not get a better plate of food that is BTW almost 90% locally sourced for the money anywhere around Gillespie County. Needless to say the regional prefab food distributor trucks to not roll up in the parking lot, except maybe for lunch!!! Really great burger. Freshness through and through. Onion rings (thin kind) are a must. BBQ brisket on fresh bun looked great as well. Simply the best fine dining meal I've had in 37 years of visiting Fredericksburg. I don't know the chef's background, but I know the dinner I was served would stand tall in any major US city. Conception, preparation, plating = outstanding. I had the dinner special. My friends ordered from the lunch menu. It was all 5-star. (The burger was better than Alamo Springs because it came on a homemade bun and the meat was of higher quality.) Find a designated driver. Drink there and back. Overlook the sadly tacky and misguided Californication makeover of the Doss Store. But hurry, hurry, hurry before this chef moves on or his rancher backers get bored playing restauranteur. read more

Only fair service, a smile would have been nice. The food was ok but not much to choose from.Why did they think I should have made a reservation, there were very few people there! Doss is the Texas hill country, should be a friendly welcoming place, trying to be snooty is way out of place and does not alone create an ambiance for expensive dinners! This little country gas station and feed store has now become a wonderful restaurant. Friday & Saturday nights chef Mattew Caven puts together some of the most delicious meals you will find anywhere. Last week it was an incredible prime rib. This week the entrees are short ribs osso buco style or quail stuffed with mushrooms,, spinach and bacon. Both are incredible and come with an appetizer, salad (yummy Parmesan, creamy shallot, and black pepper) and tiramisu for dessert. Amazing food-- at an amazing price--- $25 per person for all 4 courses! Can't wait to try the buttermilk fried chicken and pulled pok next week. Oh-- breakfast served from 7-10:30 am is also fabulous-- but come hungry-- portions are extra generous. read more

Well the 5 wives of our supper club decided it was time for the men to provide dinner. Short story...The Doss Country Store was the immediate solution. We were treated to a culinary (gluten free) delight, starting with the friendly assistance of Jorge our waiter to Matt our chef. Our feast began with an incredible appetizer, well presented and flavorful, then a salad of iceberg wedges-purple onion-in house dressing. That was just a warm up for the main course. The choices were rib-eye, filet mignon, or pork tenderloin. We all had either the filet or rib-eye (it's a Texas Thang). That all natural, hormone/ antibiotic free, grass fed beef was to die for. That, paired with mashed potatoes and local green beans made for a memorable main course. Then the desert came CHOCOLATE MOUSSE WITH REAL WHIPPED CREAM AND TOPPED OFF WITH LOCAL AGARITA BERRIES. I'M DEAD TINKIN OF IT:-) The only problem is now it may be difficult for us guys to convince our wives that the purpose of our supper club is to get together and cook. Visited the Doss Country Store on Saturday, March 30, for breakfast. I would have never heard of this place if it weren't for Yelp. It's a cool little country store with a restaurant. It's clean and comfortable. We arrived about 9:30am and unfortunately they were out of biscuits, so we decided to try a Cinnamon roll and a breakfast taco each. The Cinnamon rolls are awesome! Soft, buttery, and huge! I would recommend sharing. Now for the breakfast tacos - these are also huge. We had the bacon, sausage, egg and cheese taco. I wasn't real impressed with these. The tortilla was falling apart and very flour-y, so I decided to just eat the inside. The sausage and egg part was very good, but the bacon was very "limp" and chewy, so I took those pieces out. I think there my have been some "fluster" going on in the kitchen since the chef kept apologizing on how long the food was taking (which I didn't think it took that long). Even though I was disappointed in the taco, I would try this place again. Hopefully when they have biscuits and maybe also for lunch. read more

An absolute gem. We went for dinner based on an off-hand recommendation and were blown away. First, the setting is fantastic, the staff welcoming, and the restaurant spotless. I had my first hint of what was to come when I glimpsed the Mauviel cookware through the kitchen pass. We both opted for the dinner menu, which for an unbelievable $35 consisted of 1) Mac 'n cheese fritters (crip non-greasy exterior, oozy center); 2) Wedge salad with heirloom tomato, soft boiled egg, croutons and house-made ranch (everything extremely fresh and flavorful); 3) 10oz filet mignon (amazing piece of meat and perfectly cooked to order) with mashed potatoes (creamy, buttery goodness), and green beans (you could taste how fresh and local these were); and 4) Chocolate cake with berries (well presented with two perfect quenelles of chocolate mousse and whipped cream, both scratch-made). I challenge anyone to find a meal of this caliber at this price, anywhere. The chef made the rounds several times and was friendly and gracious. Will definitely be returning, as often as possible. read more
