Yum! Cupcakes are fantastic, but its tricky with much needed talent to get these favorable treats just right. Dots luckily have the talent to literally whip up batters galore. Their delectable assortments of seasonal and original flavors are perfectly packed in a fun size that's always soft, fluffy, moist, and darn delicious. One dozen is $22 or 2 bucks each. Caramel vanilla, hazelnut, birthday cake, chocolate are my most fav. I wish they had vegan options though. I feel like it's necessary now since times are changing and delicious sweet treats don't really need dairy in them. Regardless, I've been coming here since they opened. Fresh baked cupcakes daily? Yes they are! Second time to go here and everytime I step foot, I'm instantly brought to a happy place. From the colorful wall decor to the beautiful line up of delectable cupcakes, it'll trigger your sweet tooth fantasies! During superbowl, I tried their Chocolate Bacon (Barker's choice) and dulce de leche. I went back today to get more of the Chocolate bacon but they only bake it on special occasions. I love how the bacon chunks worked so well with the chocolate; there's a generous amount of bacon too for every bite. The dulce de leche is how I imagined it but not as sweet as I have gotten it in the past in other places; it felt light in my palate, in a good way - I could've easily had 2 more! Today, I bought carrot cupcake and strawberry shortcake. I destroyed that carrot cupcake within seconds. Haha. It was so good. I didn't feel so guilty after. You can really taste the freshness of the cupcake. I had given the strawberry shortcake to my mom and she loved it too! She said the icing tasted great! This review is focused on my experience trying to place a custom cupcake order, not about the quality of their baked goods. (Which I'm sure is great based on other reviews.) I called to ask if I could place a custom order for some birthday cupcakes. The person who answered the phone told me I needed to send an exact image of what I'm looking for. I'm sure this is what some folks want, to place an order to replicate an EXACT design. Unfortunately, I was hoping to just send in some various ideas and get feedback from them on what would be best or possible. (My idea being that they have done lots of cupcakes and might be able to make cool suggestions based off past experience.) Typically designed to serve one person but after having just one these little morsels of goodness you'll end up taking a dozen or more. A small quaint shop along the main strip with honey combed shaped interior on one side and a window pane with other knick knacks on the opposite side. This little shop offers a variety of interesting flavors and specials. Go for a regular sized cupcake or try their cute little minis that will hit the spot but only if you have self control. But wait...No self control? Ok, so the typical box starts off at six and builds up to a twenty four pack. And after writing that you should be covered with experiencing all the flavors on the shelf. They also offer tiers if your looking to deck them all out a special occasion. The service here is fair and will leave it at that. But in the end of it all the cupcakes make up for it. The self proclaimed cupcake connoisseur wants to dislike this place but the Korean in me wants to love it. (I'm pretty sure the owner is this sweet, adorable Korean lady. She works behind - I think her daughter?) I bought a dozen mini cupcakes around mid-day and the aroma of the bakery made me so happy! The decorations are adorable! They had a few animals and other cute designs. The cupcakes are expensive but they aren't dry as many have proclaimed. (Or at least mine were not) The unfortunate matter is that they use a real cheap vanilla extract that gives it a very fake vanilla taste. It's very noticeable in the Red Velvet which makes the overall red velvet taste get mixed in the shuffle of flavors. I will however admit, the cupcake icing wasn't as sweet as most cupcakes which I really admired! The whole experience of eating these cupcakes reminded me of my mom's cupcakes - and this the 3 stars. read more

We had the best mini cupcakes in the shop located in Pasadena. The carrot cake was moist and flavorful. We've been going from one cupcake place to the next all day in the Pasadena area. Dots was tops. So we ordered a several dozens mini cupcakes, several different flavors, for my daughter's birthday. I told the guess how great these cupcakes were. I decided to have a couple of these cupcakes, they looks so delicious and beautiful. To my surprise they were dry and nothing like what we had at the shop. After trying so many cupcakes places I have to say Dot's is my favorite. Not too sweet and fluffy moist cake. I have been able to try some new ones and I been in love with their Chocolate raspberry that they only have on Wednesday and Thursday. My husband is such a sweetie and had Dot deliver me a valentine day package, filled with cute and yummy cupcakes, a reusable bag and a sparkler. Dots Cupcakes is by far my most favorite cupcake place in the LA area. The cake is always moist while the frosting is thick and not like whipped cream. The flavor and sweetness work well together. I've been able to try a majority of their flavors. they have several daily flavors and a couple baker's choice flavors that change everyday. The two cupcakes I had were A-OK. Red velvet - I'm very sorry to say but as far as red velvets go, this was a bit on the bland side. Carrot Cake - I liked this one a bit more, but ... still... nothing I would wake up at 3 am craving. Recently came back and still in love with everything it has to offer! The person who helped me was amazing and had the best customer service ever! I didn't catch his name (We were there on Monday at around 3-ish so whoever working then!) unfortunately but he was super easy to converse with and made the overall experience better. He let me know beforehand that a box of dozen cupcakes did have a discount so I decided to do that because who knew when I'll be back. He was also very patient with my indecisiveness and answered my questions when I asked about the bakers choice. I decided to get some that I haven't tried yet and I do not regret it one bit. The hazelnut crunch, which are the first two in the pic, is probably one of my faves now. If you're a fan of ferrero rocher chocolate, I HIGHLY recommend this one. There's Nutella in the middle of the cupcake and with nuts topped on top made it taste exactly like the chocolate and I found myself in love with it. Definitely gonna be a go-to choice from now on! The red velvet still tastes amazing as well as the strawberry shortcake. I actually noticed this time that the strawberry shortcake has strawberries in the middle!! The bakers choice was chocolate banana peanut butter. I thought it was interesting and bought one to try it. Instead my brother tried it and he said it was good. He's very picky when it comes to sweets so if he likes it I'll take his word for it lol. According to him, it tastes like banana bread at first before the peanut butter kicks in which makes it tastes like Reese's cups. The vanilla one is like any other one so can't complain there. My first time every having a Dots Cupcake. I know shocking lol I was in Old Town and passed right by it. How could I have not stopped in and got one lol. I tried the Dulce De Leche. It was sooo good!!! It was fluffy and rich. the Carmel drizzle on top was everything!! I defiantly will be coming back to try another one. The shop was clean and they had a little seating area to sit inside to enjoy your cupcake/s. It was a warm day today and inside was stuffy and warmer then outside. We had to eat it outside on the sidewalk to stay cool. They do give you complimentary water when you ask so that was great. Overall a great choice if you're craving chocolate! RED VELVET: It's not as thick as Sprinkle's Red Velvet-definitely lighter and softer when you bite into it? It looked chocolate-y, but it just didn't work for me. Mint Chocolate - one word : ewwwwwwwwwwwwwwww 2 Chocolate types - not sure what they each were, but I disliked BOTH of them......flat flavor, no salt (to know me is to know my issue with salt in baked goods...read my other reviews if ya wanna know). I'll just say this about that........cupcakes seem to bring out the WORST in the salt issue.......no salt = bland, blah flavor. The sweetness factor loses its effectiveness. Period. It's simple, and very FEW get this. Just ask Ina Garten. Just ask ANYONE who knows the secrets to GOOD baking. Sheesh, get it right, people. Just a pinch is all it takes. Okay, so now that I've vented..........just buy the lemon and carrot cake and save yourself the aggravation. They have some really great sounding flavors that were NOT available when I got there. All the years I've been coming here, I don't think I've had a bad cupcake! This is honestly my favorite cupcake shop. From oreo to fleur de sel to carrot cake to all their other flavors, they are so good! The cake is always so moist and fluffy, and there is always the perfect amount of icing. I've had both regular and minis, and they are same quality and deliciousness! My personal favorite is the mini cookies and cream cupcakes, but again, everything I've had is delicious. Had the red velvet today for a birthday party. At first glance, I thought, (or at least hoped) that they were from Nothing Bundt Cakes, but someone clarified ahead that they were from Dots. The only cupcake I get here is the salted Carmel because its rare you see it. They put their cupcake in a specially designed cupcake box, which is the reason you pay $3.00 per cupcake! All the other cupcakes are not worth getting here cause you can get those other flavors elsewhere; no need to drive all the way here for a cupcake. Having had tried more flavors since my last visit, I can definitely say that Dots Cupcakes is awesome for any type of chocolate cupcake. In my opinion, anything other than chocolate is just...okay. The chocolate flavor is just so decadent and moist. I have not experienced it with any other flavors here. My favorite still is the Mostess cupcake. But following very closely is the Chocolate Vanilla and the Fleur de Sel. Here's a rundown in case you need it: Mostess: Chocolae cake and chocolate frosting with vanilla creme filling. Gotta love the white squiggly lines. Love-love-loved!!! Served Fri-Sun Chocolate Vanilla: Straight forward chocolate cake with vanilla frosting. Loved!! Very moist. Served everyday Cookies & Cream: Chocolate cake with vanilla frosting covered in oreo-esque crumbles. It was okay. I enjoyed the Chocolate Vanilla more. Served daily. Fleur de Sel: Chocolate cake with chocolate frosting and caramel drizzle. Also bits of sea salt. Its Very good. But...I guess I am not a fan of the salt. However, I would order again. Served daily. I ordered 36 mini cupcakes for my mother's birthday for pick up. When I arrived for the pick up, the staff informed me that they had given two dozen to someone else accidentally. They didn't think to call to inform me of the error and did not have inventory to replace the missing order. As salt on wound, the staff didn't validate my parking correctly so I ended up paying for parking and walked out without cupcakes. Only giving one more star than the lowest because I have had better experiences here in the past. read more

Next to Sprinkles cup cakes, Dots is my favorite cup cake shop. In fact, I think they're better then Sprinkles or Crumbs. Their cupcakes are so moist and creamy. Not dry and sweet like other cup cake shops. Also, their $1 dollar cheaper then Sprinkles or Crumbs. The best thing about dots is that you don't have to wait in line and drive to Beverly Hills. All their cup cakes are good. My favorites are the cookies n' cream, vanilla chocolate swirl, red velvet, maple bacon cupcake and dulce de leche. They also have mini cup cakes for half the price which is a good way to sample all their cup cakes without having to feel guilty and all pigged out. A coworker got me a mini vanilla cupcake that came in the cutest little box from here! It was such a nice Valentine's Day treat. I especially loved the flecks of vanilla bean in the frosting. The flavor was very balanced and not overly sweet. It totally hit the spot for an afternoon snack at the office. Considering they are close to Sprinkles (my fave) and sooooooo much better tasting AND priced than Casey's Cupcakes (Riverside), I am definitely a fan. They taste good so far (not too sweet, not too dry), are moderately priced ($2.75 compared to Casey's $3.25!), and are a lot much closer to me than any other worthy cupcake place. What I don't understand is people saying they are too sweet...you guys do realize you're eating cupcakes, right? That's like saying sweet potatoes taste too sweet...isn't it supposed to be sweet, like cupcakes are, hence the "cake" part...? The only cons I have are: 1) It was STIFLING hot inside the store...I mean, we were in there for perhaps 5 minutes, and I started sweating. 2) The guy working the register was nice but he didn't give us any change back (he owed us 50 cents), and didn't believe us until we showed him the receipt, where it showed we gave him $6 and he charged us for $5.50 (2 regular sized cupcakes.) He was still 400 times nicer than the people at Casey's, so I'll let it slide. Over all, I'll be going back and probably tell my friends, too! read more

Overall, an experience at Dots Cupcakes (buying, eating on sight, selection of what is available) would be a 3 (being ok, it's cool.) However, I'd put them at a solid 4 for my personal favorites. When in Pasadena, I will make my way over to Dots on Fair Oaks to get my favorite cupcakes to take home: 1.) Chocolate mint: the little tiny malt balls sprinkled on top is what gets me! Love it 2.) Fleur de Sal:Just enough salt to give you that occasional pop of taste 3.) Strawberry Lemonade: Very refreshing and light. The reason why I think the shop is okay is because it's small and there isn't much room to sit and enjoy your cupcake. They do try to make efficient use of the space that they do have but it is still a bit cramped. Take your cupcakes to go and enjoy Old Town Pasadena outdoors. I'd also skip the coffee and get it elsewhere.
