If I could give negative stars, I would. My son was in a car accident, his car was totaled and it was towed to Dotts. He was hospitalized and couldn't get to his car for 2 days to clean out his belongings before being towed by our insurance company. The people at Dotts stole his tackle box, fishing rod, work boots, $40 in cash, loose change, a brand new Lego set, a pair of expensive noise-canceling headphones, and his WINTER COAT! Seriously?? How do these people sleep at night? At the end of the day, all that matters is that our son is ok. To go through something traumatic like this is hard enough, but to have his belongings stolen? Year 2022, I joined this Dott's suck club, and I read complaints from the last ten years. Dotts is consistent in screwing, pissing on, and ripping off customers. DOTTS WORST BUSINESS IN CAPITAL DISTRICT One five letter word to describe Dotts, the word is A W F U L, I usually don't write reviews but this is a warning, avoid their services. Colonie police called Dotts after my car accident, when I wanted my AAA, but they arrived first. and threaten to fine me if I didn't allow them to tow, so I said yes, and my car insurance paid to have it towed to my collision shop, who fixed my car, but said no plates was with my car. After investigation, found out Dotts lost my two license plates but they rudely denied it. I had drive out of town to the police department to report my plates lost and pay for new plates. I found a google site, and Dotts had a majority of complaints. I wish I could give them a zero, Dotts was very rude and lousy customer service. Beware of a Dott's tow truck if you are on the road. I was on Lancaster Street today at 3pm when the driver of the tow truck decided to back up down almost the whole block. I honked to let them know I was behind them and they didn't care & continued backing up. I honked again and If I didn't back up myself, they would have hit me. I had to back onto Lark Street! The truck continued around the neighborhood and then backed up down an entire other street. Crazy driver with no regard for anyone on the road. My son brought his car in for a serpentine belt replacement. After the mechanic looked at it he said it needed a Steering rack. I get it, sometimes it turns out to be a more involved job than anticipated. He was quoted $800 and agreed to it. Next day they called back and said it needed a new tie rod which raised the bill to $1200. I called and questioned the mechanic and they didn't like it. I specifically asked why they didn't run a thread chaser and re-use it. No good answer apparently when they took it off to replace the rack the threads got damaged. After all was said and done I called to pay the bill for my son and was told point blank "we can't accept credit cards over the phone". Was also told "this needed to be paid in cash"... $1200. CASH???? I am not local to Albany (anymore) which is why I wanted to handle it over the phone. My son doesn't have this sort of cash and was relying on my help for this bill. My son had been bringing his cars to these folks for years and never felt like he was being taken advantage of.... I think otherwise! They went out of their way to make things difficult. This garage (or owner) did nothing to help or make the situation easier. They didn't offer any options or assistance and on the phone the owner was assertive and rude. He spoke over me continuously. Thats the story behind the poor rating without anything being left out or false information. You draw your own conclusion from it. I believe there is a reason why this company has such a poor rating. My brothers car was in an accident and so the cops had these scumbags come out. Had a popped tire and they didn't even attempt to put the spare on, they just towed it to the lot about 4 miles away without giving any pricing. Came in the next morning when they opened the lot and they charged over 400 dollars for the overnight storage and tow. Had my car towed by Dotts garage even though I was physically standing in the parking lot. I ran over to find out what was going on and the operator told me that because he had already started the process of towing my car, that I had to pay him to stop and remove the chain. Cost me 90 something bucks for him to remove the chain and give my car back. On top of having to pay for some BS, he was a total asshole. Places like this should really have better business practices especially if they are affiliated with other businesses in the areas. Because of this incident, I refuse to patronize Coccadots Cake Shop. read more

I really can't make this up. The owner of dotts is absolutely insane and the degree of his unprofessionalism was unreal. Never in my life have I had a towing company try and start a literal pillow fight with me. Was in a car wreck with no fault on my end. Car was towed to Dotts... Went here the next day to retrieve my medications and dead brother's urn from the car. Nobody was in the office (unlocked and opened) and the lot gate was wide open so I walked to my car. The owner proceeded to whip his truck in front of me and yell/curse, "come back tomorrow" "tough luck sweetie" "we closed at 1600" (it was now 1604 at this point). I explained that I am less than 20 feet from my vehicle, I need my controlled-substance medications and dead brothers ashes. After being called "D-bag, sweetie, b**ch, etc", I informed him that I am gathering my belongings and will have my car removed from his lot tomorrow. He then kicked my car door, took the pillows and bags from my back seat, and threw them across the lot onto other vehicles...one of which had my brother's Urn in it, all while calling me a number of slurs. He then locked me inside gates with a chain and deadbolt while telling my friend outside the gate that she can pay him $150 or he will have me arrested for tresspassing, even though I was on the lot looking for someone to help me out and he only showed up after the fact, and then physically prevented me from leaving. Basically waited for the police to come and sort this out, while singing jailhouse songs to myself. Surprise, the cops even thought this whole ordeal was ridiculous! All in all, I was given my medications and brother's ashes back, but he refused to let me out until I put the pillows back and my bags of belongings that I no longer trusted to be okay at his lot. Apparently he has to "take inventory" of everything inside my car. Hope he enjoys the garbage he spilled everywhere and my dirty laundry bags. As for the $150... literal BS. I had the title in my name and license with me. You can't lock someone in a gate and try to shake them down for money. Never. Ever. Ever again. read more

I really appreciate the great service and excellent treatment that I have been given by Dotts Garage over the years. From repairs to yearly inspections and even a few emergency tows due to mechanical failures. Many people wrongly slam the tow companies and their drivers due to their own poor parking choices, why? If the police call for an accident / violation tow or business owners call because of illegal parking, what did Dotts to wrong. Cash payments? Hell yeah because if you were the kind of person that did something caused you to get tow in the first place the you might be the kind of person that would dispute a credit card charge too. read more

The scariest place I've ever had to go to retrieve a towed car. Be afraid...be very afraid. You best bring cash because the credit card machine is mysteriously not working if they don't like you. I have heard this from 2 other people also. God help people who don't have cash and need to use credit. I was going to wait to see if any other customer came in and paid credit but I had to get out of there with my life....they said 'go get cash at Cumberland Farms or your car will have to stay here and you'll be charged a gate fee and storage'. Like many others on this page I have no idea how this place is still in business. Their response to the better business beareau complaint was very underwhelming. Agreed with the other writers who had poor experiences with these guys. My car was specifically targeted for towing from a parking lot that had at least 6 other vehicles in it - the person I spoke to at Dotts when I went to get my car (which they charged an exorbitant "gate fee" for because it was at night) said that when he'd arrived all the other cars I'd seen in the lot with my car were leaving just as he got there. Bullshit. Those cars were still there when my friend's ride showed up. The only car that had been taken was mine. Can't say for absolute certain why, but it should probably be noted that my car has a number of liberal/queer bumper stickers and decals..... So, exercise extra caution folks - look hard for those towing signs, especially if Dotts is the towing company. read more

I had my clutch repaired by them in May 2015. I had never used them before and was worried about getting ripped off. However, they ended up doing excellent work and the price was extremely reasonable. I went online and checked the price they charged me for parts and there markup was limited, with the exception of labor. However, even the labor rate was right in the wheelhouse (~$80/hour). Unfortunately I parked in a church parking lot and was towed at 5 am. I didn't realize this until coming back to my car at 7 am. I called the number listed on a nearby sign in case of towing, and a gentleman answered the phone and told me that he could be at the garage in half an hour. I had to hop on the 1 bus on Central Avenue and got there in about 20 minutes. Even though he said they don't take card, he took mine because honestly there was no ATM in this place, so I have no idea how I would have gotten that money. I'm not sure when their hours of operations are, but at least someone was able to meet me there. I had to pay $125 and $10 tax, so $135 altogether. Don't take chances. read more

I pointed to their credit machine and asked them:Why do they have a credit machine?", the tow guy stumbled on his words and said "It was for garage use only", I'm sure he pocketed the $135.00, I paid him, he then had the audacity to ask, if I wanted a receipt. My car was towed so I called the police to try to find my car. Gave them my plate #, make, model, year, and color and they told me Dott's. I called Dotts to check if it was there, they said yes. I go to Dotts and they said it wasn't actually there and that it was at another place, I call that place and the police department again and they said that yes it was at Dotts. I go back again and they said they didn't have my car, I check their books AND IT SAYS RIGHT THERE THAT THEY HAD MY CAR. Then I confront the owner about it and he called me a "DUMB B****!" I give him my card and then he throws it at me and says "for you, only cash and F*** YOU." So I had to get 130$ in cash out to retrieve my car from this POS. These guys are unprofessional and rude. One of the best garages I've ever taken my car to. The service was friendly and my car was finished the same day or next day that I took it there. They immediately looked at it, told me exactly what the problem was, and fixed it without beating around the bush or taking forever to fix it. Especially compared to experiences I had with other garages in the Albany area this place was absolutely wonderful! Good, trustworthy and fairly priced mechanic. Police compelled the local garages to tow half of Sheridan Ave tonight. We called the police and were instructed to go to Dott's Garage to retrieve it. When we arrived no one was there, so we called the number on the door and then were instructed to call the "late night/on-call" number. A man answered quickly, verified our info to ensure he had our car. He said he would be there in 20 mins and he was. It was a quick paper work transaction inside the shop and then he took us around to get the car. It's a bummer to have your car towed. It's easy to feel like it's an injustice and be mad at the tow companies. Dott's even commiserated with us on how terrible it is to be towed from that area because the signs aren't that's great to notify of the temporary no parking order--but the man who helped us was kind and efficient. I hope I never have to see them again but if I do at least I know it won't ruin my whole night. We had our car back in a reasonable amount of time and were on our way. It's an expensive mistake so I will be more careful reading the signs in the future and will look for temporary signs that may be posted. read more

My wife had taken our 5 year old to his pediatric doctor early in the morning during a normal business day of the week, she MISTAKENLY parked in an area next door to the pediatrics practice in the parking lot of a local bank in our community since she thought it would be quick enough of a check up for the boy. 20 minutes later she was told that her vehicle has just been towed away without any communication what so ever!!. When we went to pick the vehicle up from there shop located on Central Ave. the person "business owner" was EXTREMELY unprofessional about the whole situation to the point where I actually feared for my life and the safety of my wife and child. read more
