I've been here for a coffee many times with a friend who lives in the area. Their espresso and drip are always good, sometimes the espresso is excellent. My friend typically gets a cortado or cappuccino, and sometimes one of the seasonal lattes. She always likes her coffee quite a bit. Today we also had breakfast for the first time. I had the burrito, she has the croissant breakfast sandwich with turkey. Both were great, though the burrito could have used salsa or hot sauce to add some zing and some heat. Not sure why we waited so long to eat there; won't make that mistake again. They have a decent amount of seating and a nice outdoor area when the weather allows. The dining area is quiet and a little dark; depressing to some, calming to me. The staff is always friendly and drinks come out quickly. read more

Had three varieties of seating - out on the street, inside and the back patio; the first was airy and spacious but can be loud with the street noise, inside is darker and smaller, and the back patio has bugs and even darker and more cramped, but dressed up with some string lights and flowers. Had one of the best matchas of my life here (strawberry rose matcha). The ordering area gets congested but there is tons of seating in the front and back patio areas indoors. There were many people working inside and it was fairly quiet so we sat out in the front sidewalk seating and it was a lovely space to catchup and people watch. read more

Plenty of seating area inside, out front and in the back which is always appreciated at a coffee shop. Service was quick. Ok I love this place BUT it's extremely expensive which is why I gave it 4 stars as opposed to 5. Their coffee is good but not amazing and a small vanilla latte with oat milk runs me $8 without tip which is kinda insane to me?? The food is also really good, though again pricy. I've had the tuna toast and the avocado toast and both are super fresh and delicious but around $14 each. Would not recommend the chai or matcha. I also love the atmosphere and the music- all around superb vibes but it does get pretty busy and people tend to stay awhile so not too much turn around but I usually always find a seat if not in the main room, the second one towards the back. There is however, ample outdoor seating for the warmer months and it's really cute! They have tons of outlets and wifi as well. I gave four stars only because I only tried one thing; Carmel latte and it was fire!! So so goood! I didn't try any pastries or food. I was waiting to have my eyes checked and since it was taking a while I decided to grab a coffee. This was the best part of my doctor's visit. - Ambiance/Vibe: this store, like many in New York was tiny and very narrow. It was very much a location for quick in and out, but there are some nice single and double sitting in the back. However, my favorite part is the outdoor deck in the back. Imagine this guys. It's a little chilly. You just finished walking through Central park. A random girl on the street tells you that the lemon loaf here are fantastic. You walk to the shop (still a little chilly) and they're out of lemon loafs. Sad but it's alright because they had cookies. The cookies are like a toffee chocolate chip. Fantastic would recommend. The waffle was good. It has little sugar bits inside the waffle itself which was a nice surprise. However comma I wish it was warm. It probably could've been warmed but I didn't ask so.... Ordered the matcha latte, and this was probably one of the best I've had at a non Asian coffee shop. Super rich, deep matcha flavor that was unapologetically matcha (not trying to be some sweetened mild tea drink). We got it with oat milk and the barista didn't charge for the milk sub, saying the $0.75 surcharge was "ridiculous." I agree but also am very grateful for his generosity. :) the space in the back is small and always full on the weekends but this little cafe is definitely worth a visit and is loads better than any service you'll get at Starbucks. read more

After lunch, we needed some coffee. We considered our many options, and decided on Double Dutch Espresso. We made the short walk over here, to this cozy but busy coffee shop. There were a lot of people here, taking up the seating inside. We were on our way out, so we didn't mind this. We ordered our lattes, and I made sure to get a quadruple shot in mine. After a short wait, we had our coffees in hand. My coffee was delicious, and had me wired in short order. The staff here was friendly and efficient in their service. The place was kept clean, even in the busy state that they were in. The inside is comfortable, a good haven from the summer heat outside, and a decent place to study or work on your laptop. I'll consider this coffee shop the next time I'm in the area. read more

An alright place. The kitchen closes in the early afternoon, so we weren't able to grab a bite we'd hoped for. The barista missed the size with our order so let us size up, which I appreciate. We got a mocha and hot chocolate which were at drinkable temperature when we got it, it's such a pet peeve of mine when it's not. They were a good comfy drink for what we needed at the time. The space is very narrow and hard to find seats in. A lot of people were just on their computers working. The connection to the bar may have added to the noise. Glad it had restrooms. Cups come without caps showing off the latte art, but the caps aren't sorted by a labeled size so I wasted one grabbing the wrong size. read more

I ordered an iced matcha latte and it literally tasted like green powered dirt mixed with milk. Rustic style is seen all around with this soft-tone wall popping with antique frames and mirrors. A large window, up front, brings lots of natural light. Interior, brings out a bright presentation ready for an inviting light and breakfast to come, in this small enclave in the middle of Harlem. Though, my hot chocolate was dressed nicely, and somewhat freshly made, the chocolate was poured from a bottle and tasted more like Bosco and really didn't care for. If you're a coffee drinker on the other hand, you'll take a liking to Double Dutch. The guys at the front of the house, were great from start to finish. I liked how everything blended, the raw, brick-chic style, the funky lighting fixtures and accessories throughout Double Dutch. Grabbing a quick nosh here, created a different experience, that I was digging. read more

As I write this review, I am trapped in New York's Harlem in the middle of the first great snowstorm of 2016. This morning, after my son had to leave for work (on a Saturday, in a blizzard, because he is a very junior guy at a large news organization), I decided to venture out and get some coffee. Yelp guided me here. After an adventurous 6 block walk through really, really bad weather, I made it to this gem. I really like the coffee, even if it is not the super dark roast I normally prefer. The house coffee is between what I would call medium and dark roast. I've found that the right coast coffee is a shade lighter that way then the left coast coffee I'm used to. In any case, DD coffee is still substantial. It has body, fullness and a relatively clean aftertaste. Nice! For me, the real star here, is the food. The pastries here are superior! I had an apple turnover that was excellent. The crust was flaky and crisp, but didn't just disintegrate into an inconvenient mess. Just right. The filling was clearly made from scratch by the baker and had just the perfect balance between tart and sweet that I like in a fruit filled pastry of any kind, but especially apple. I wish I could show you all a picture of it, but my iPhone shut down in the cold while I was walking to the shop. Really, Apple? It's only 28°F outside. Since we're in the middle of a record setting storm, I thought I'd lay in lunch as well as have breakfast, so I purchased a provolone and salami on ciabatta to go. $8, but wonderful. It is grilled on the panini and has all the good stuff in it (Provolone, salami, spinach, special sauce, etc.) Yum! I ate it for lunch when I got back to the apartment. I have uploaded a photo of it in both open and closed face positions, since my iPhone had recovered from the cold by the time I was ready to eat. Other things to know - the service is great and the people are friendly. Others seemed to be enjoying the free wifi (they have a password posted on the wall). I can't tell you how well it worked directly because my iPhone quit on me as I wrote above. The decor is comfortably eclectic and the overall feeling is much nice than spending time at my business traveler's office, Starbucks. The location is very near the corner of Frederick O. Douglass and 118th. When in Harlem to see my son, if it is breakfast or lunch that I need to figure out, I am coming here. You should too. read more

Here's my take on this coffee at 4:35 AM the next day. I didn't like the espresso...at all. It was extremely sour. It had a particular color and I asked for sugar in it. Not every espresso is made like a Cuban espresso, so I ask. The young lady serving was fantastic. Polite, fast, and gave me info about the coffee they use called, Counter Culture. She was great, but there was no sugar in my espresso. After my tasting, the smell didn't lead me down the path I expected. Because it smelled amazing. Different, but great. The taste was exceptionally bitter, sour, and had an almost citrus-like pucker after taste. Really, just the bitter oils from an orange. It was almost like Angostino bitters we're sprinkled in. I ended up adding simple syrup and a shot of milk to the top. It was also served on a random paper shot glass. Granted I said to go. But this just didn't feel right. I also only got the very one tiny shot. Granted, that was fine, I didn't want more, but it was just the one shot. At least elsewhere I get the whole batch from the mixing pourer in a small cup and a few plastic shot glasses. But perhaps that's an unfair comparison as this was not Cuban Cafe. After reading up on this type of coffee it just may be one of those types of coffee I don't like...which is rare. The place is beautiful and they had a variety of options. I will have to try something else in the future. It gets 1 star on the espresso but overall the place deserves another look. I make no assumptions but I've had espresso without sugar at home, it doesn't taste like this. I've ground various types of coffee to try them out as espresso. So I'm not sure If the machine was not cleaned in a while or if the grounds were burning, making it all bitter. I didn't complain, that's on me, i'll try it again and update this review down the road. But as I said in the beginning. I'm still awake from the buzz this shot gave me. Came in to try their coffee and write a paper. I'm all about trying the local coffee shops around my neighborhood, and I ventured here. The staff members working the front were very friendly, but it's a tight squeeze for a line and the pace is quick, so you get ushered through rapidly. I got an oat mocha, which was mediocre. Not my most treasured nor my least. They truly do use all space possible for seating. I initially had to sit on the long bar located between the front counter and the seating in the back. Once someone left a table, I was able to relocate and have more space. The day I was here, someone was fixing a light in a hanging fixture. She was there for quite a while on a ladder, turning the lights on and off. Eventually, she needed the power off, so I had to move my bags from the light switch since they were behind my seat. Essentially, I became her assistant turning it on and off for about ten minutes. I totally undeestand that things need repair, but I'm wondering if customers would be better served if this were to be done after business hours. Everyone was staring, having to dance around the ladder to get around, and it just took away from the ambiance. Lastly, the music is far too loud. Not only loud, but not your average relaxing coffee shop music. I had my headphones up all the way and still heard their music. With this whole chaotic experience, the coffee becomes least memorable in my mind--which begs the question was it worth it? I'll probably give them another chance, but after I explore other options. read more

I'm not a fan. They prepare espresso and leave it in a cup on the espresso machine until the customer orders. Espresso should be prepared immediately before being served. Otherwise, it loses its flavor. read more

There are a few nice coffee shops in the area but Double Dutch is the best by far. It's a great spot to come and hang out in the morning. It does tend to get a little crowded on Saturdays so that's one thing to keep in mind. That being said their coffee is amazing. Pretty strong so those that like their coffee more mellow might be better off with a small. They have a great selection of croissants and baked goods. Staff is always wicked friendly too. Highly recommend for anyone in the area! read more

I'm a fan! Double Dutch is the coffee option next door to the Mess Hall bar. Their coffee is awesome (tried a latte), alternative milks available. They have a food menu of pastries (the feta herb scone was bomb!) and sandwiches, as well as trendy dishes like avocado toast and acai bowls. Ambiance is good for working or studying with a chill vibe. Space is larger than it looks from the outside; service was quick and polite. read more
