Food was amazing! Busy night so service was a little slow but we were not in a hurry so it worked for us! Starting off with free pickles l, carrots and edamame was a nice touch! We tried the ribs and steamed dumplings for appetizers and both were perfect! Great dipping sauces! Then for dinner we had chicken fried rice which had no sauce which made it nice and light and beef with peppers and onions did have a thicker sauce so was a bit sweet for me but still delicious! We celebrated my mother's birthday with lunch here last week. No one was in there. On our way to our table we noticed our shoes were sticking on the floor. Once seated at our table, a thick rubbery table cloth pressed into our laps. It was hard to sit correctly. The table cloths were way too big. The lunch specials looked good. The four of us all tried something different. We ordered sesame and fire cracking chicken, dumplings and green beans. The soups were delicious.! We were disappointed with the chicken dishes. It was all breading, no chicken, just fried scraps. The green beans were soggy, not crisp. We complained to the waitress. She said sometimes stuff happens. Four of us dined here last night (25 January 2025). I ate here once before for lunch, but never wrote a review. I don't even remember what I had. The place was full, but we had reservations. The interior had a nice Asian vibe. There's a separate room with low tables. Jalyn was our waitress. She was very nice and quite professional at her job. The menu has a good variety of dishes to choose from. Jalyn brought us each a small plate of edamame and picked carrots/cucumbers. That was a nice start to our meal. My husband and I ordered the shrimp with Chinese chives pot stickers (quantity of six), which came with a dipping sauce (probably soy sauce rice vinegar, sesame oil, etc) and a hot chili sauce. They were excellent!! My friends ordered the spring rolls, which they really enjoyed. For my entrée, I had the firecracker chicken along with brown rice. This came with celery, carrots, baby corn, straw mushroom and water chestnuts in a Sichuan red chili pepper sauce. The chicken pieces were breaded and stir-fried. My husband had the Sichuan eggplant dish, (with brown rice) which included onions and scallions. He added pork, but felt there was very little of it in the dish. He also stated it was not spicy at all. Our friends had the General Tso's chicken and one of the pork dishes. The entrée portions for all four dishes were huge! We had leftovers. My how things have changed-returned after not eating there in seven years. Wife and I had lunch special. General Tso chicken was gummy and questionable chicken cut. Beef and Broccoli was also a weird chewy gummy part of beef. Salad side was smattering of iceberg lettuce with watermelon pieces, almond and carrot slivers and a ginger dressing. Even the brown and white rice were subpar. Service was excellent-but doubt we will return. Maybe an off day judging by the other positive reviews? read more

our Wine and Dine group recently visited Double Happiness in Wilmington. there were 21 of us and the restaurant accommodated us with a long table, it was perfect! Mey and her staff were amazing with James (A++) adeptly took orders - his assistant (can't remember her name) got an initiation by fire - it was her first night! a great team! the service was exceptional and we specifically requested James as he provided exceptional service in a prior visit. Chinese restaurant in the Publix shopping center. I didn't go inside, we ordered to go. I was sharing with the in-laws so we got spring rolls and two kinds of fried rice. Shrimp and veggie fried. We noticed however they did not have traditional eggrolls on the menu, only spring rolls which were small and pricy (2 rolls for $7.00 each and we needed six). For shrimp fried rice they have an add on fee of $5 but they use legit medium sized shrimp in the rice ( about 5-6 shrimp). The veggie fried was my favorite as it was full of broccoli, onions, carrots, snow peas, baby corn, spinach ( or might have been bok Choy). Unfortunately I forgot to take pictures but overall solid Chinese food, just. A hair on the pricey side. read more

This is a solid, local staple for Wilmington. This is a great option if you want an upgraded version of classic and traditional Chinese fare that is not in a sad strip mall or hole in the wall. This place has a great reputation so I went and got some pork rolls and steamed dumplings. The pork rolls had very little filling and not much taste. The steamed dumplings were the same as everywhere else but the dipping sauce was very good. I am assuming I just went on a bad night but not worth what I paid. I patronized this restaurant largely because it was open. The somewhat limited Wilmington food scene has an awful lot of restaurants that close early or aren't open on Sunday, so this place's hours are an asset. They offer a bit more interesting menu options that the baseline for Chinese, and do mark options vegetarian. There aren't any great number of these, but you can certainly get a good meal here. I was pleased with the option for loose leaf green tea. I added a scallion pancake which had the scallions baked in and fresh ones sprinkled on top, as well as in the tasty dipping sauce on the side. Lettuce wraps came with a delightful stir-fried vegetables mix. My ma po tofu, while appealing, was not all that spicy. I remember the dish I ordered at their other location having a bit more burn so that was a head-scratcher. And it's just the perfect amount of food for the price. This Chinese restaurant seems overpriced and overrated. I had a very disappointing dining experience here. I had egg drop soup, a house salad, a pork dumpling, the Beef & Broccoli entree, and coconut cake for dessert. The egg drop soup and the pork dumpling were both pretty good but everything else was underwhelming to say the least. The house salad was watery and basic; cucumbers, onions, and iceberg lettuce with an odd dressing, not the creamy ginger dressing that most Asian restaurants serve. My beef and broccoli entree was just bad all around. I should have snapped a picture because the whole thing was swimming in so much watery sauce that the sauce nearly overflowed the plate. It was like a stew. The meat and the broccoli were both so bland and flavorless that it tasted as if they had been boiled in water instead of stir-fried. The coconut cake was not good either. Most Asian restaurants serve a standard coconut cake that is usually delicious. The cake from Double Happiness was not that kind of coconut cake. It was dry and overly sweet, especially the frosting. It tasted like the kind of cake you get off the sale shelf at a grocery store. I was dining with guests this evening and I did not want to send the food back or bring any attention to the situation, so I just ate a portion of my meal and then left. I did make a call to the restaurant when I got home. I left a message for management, so it will be interesting to hear what they have to say. Also, try to avoid sitting at the booths because the ones we sat in were spaced way too far from the table. We all had to sit on the very edge of our seats to reach our food. read more

The place was not busy at all in fact it was just me and a local who was very friendly and we talked while we waited for our food to come out. I had Orange Peel Chicken and Dumplings and man some of the best Chinese food I have ever had, Fresh, Hot and full of flavor. I Will Definitely be back to this place if I am in back in town for business and even if you are local and like Chinese food, Yes it cost you a little more but great portions and taste. I love this place. I lived in Boston for ten years and worked at Tufts in Chinatown for two years, dim sum was my absolute favorite thing to do. Ever since leaving Boston, I crave dim sum. While Double Happiness doesn't serve a traditional Dim Sum, what they do serve is well done and authentic. The service is fantastic! The first time, I bought my toddler who spent most of her time under the table, they accommodated even her with a smile and love. Double happiness Chinese restaurant left two people, doubly disappointed, in both selection, service, and price. Let's begin. It's decorated in the typical old traditional Chinese restaurant style and has a lot of seating in their dining area. We were seated quickly and ordered drinks with a pot of tea. We started with the tofu vegetable lettuce wraps, the vegetable steamed dumplings, and the spring roll. We liked all three, but thought the tofu vegetable wraps were lacking something in terms of flavor and taste. My wife was disappointed that they don't serve chow mein, so she ordered shrimp lo mein, and I had the wide noodle with shrimp. Both tasted good and fresh. The portions are big. The shrimp were big and meaty. Our server became less present as the meal progressed. It got annoying when I needed a straw, a napkin, a plate, a soda refill, more tea, soy sauce, the check. Every time, I had to get her attention by flagging her down or she would walk past our table, without even stopping by to check on us. Even though the place wasn't busy with customers, our blonde haired waitress was overwhelmed and very inattentive to our needs as diners. By the end of the meal I was tired of having to get her attention for anything. The topper was when we found out that the only dessert they had left was ice cream and nothing else. We left feeling dissatisfied and went to insomnia cookies for our dessert. Without dessert the meal came to $80 before tip. That's a lot for a Chinese meal.
